¹ In the meantime, when a great crowd of people had gathered, so that they trod upon each other, he began to say first to his disciples, Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

⁶ Then Jesus said to them, Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. ⁷ And they discussed among themselves, saying, It is because we brought no bread. ⁸ When Jesus perceived this, he said to them, O you of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves that you have brought no bread? ⁹ Do you not yet understand; do you not remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up? ¹⁰ Or the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up? ¹¹ How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread, but that you should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? ¹² Then they understood that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

¹⁵ And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and the leaven of Herod. ¹⁶ And they discussed among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread. ¹⁷ And being aware of this, Jesus said to them, Why do you discuss having no bread? do you not yet see or understand? are your hearts hardened? ¹⁸ Having eyes, do you not see? and having ears, do you not hear? and do you not remember? ¹⁹ When I broke the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you pick up? They said to him, Twelve. ²⁰ And when I broke the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you pick up? And they said, Seven. ²¹ And he said to them, How is it that you do not understand?

¹ And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret,

¹⁵ But his fame was spread abroad so much the more: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities.

¹⁷ And he came down with them, and stood on a level place; and there was the company of his disciples and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

⁴⁴ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like unmarked graves, which men walk over unaware.

⁵⁶ You hypocrites, you can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it that you do not discern this time?

²⁰ And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said to him, You see, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are who believe; and they are all zealous for the law:

⁷ Clean out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you really are unleavened. For Christ our passover has been sacrificed for us: ⁸ Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

³ For I delivered to you as of first importance that which I received, that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

¹ Therefore, laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisy, and envy, and all kinds of slander,
