²¹ And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he said, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.

⁹ But why did ye go out? to see a prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet. ¹⁰ For this is he of whom it is written: "Lo! I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee." ¹¹ Truly do I say to you, Among those born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist. But he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

¹⁴ And if ye are willing to receive it, he is the Elijah who was to come.

¹⁴ And they said, Some, John the Baptist; but some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.

¹⁰ And the disciples asked him, saying, Why then say the scribes that Elijah must first come? ¹¹ And he answering said, Elijah indeed cometh, and will restore all things. ¹² But I say to you, that Elijah hath already come, and they knew him not, but did with him whatever they would. So also is the Son of man to suffer by them.

¹⁷ And he will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.

²⁵ and they asked him and said to him, Why then dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?

⁴⁰ Some of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, This is in truth the prophet. Others said, This is the Christ.
