³ This is what Jehovah says: »Judge fairly, and do what is right. Rescue those who have been robbed from those who oppress them. Do not mistreat foreigners, orphans, or widows, and do not oppress them. Do not kill innocent people in this place.

²² »Do not mistreat any widow or orphan.

⁶ »Do not deny justice to a poor person at his trial. ⁷ »Do not make false accusations. Do not put an innocent person to death. I will condemn anyone who does this evil thing. ⁸ »Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe makes the discerning blind to what is right and perverts the words of the righteous. ⁹ »Do not mistreat a foreigner. You know how it feels to be a foreigner. After all you were foreigners in Egypt.

¹⁵ »‘Do no injustice in judgment. Do not be partial to the poor nor defer to the great. Judge your neighbor fairly.

¹⁸ »He executes justice for the orphan and the widow. He shows His love for the alien by giving him food and clothing.

¹⁹ »‘Cursed is he who withholds justice due an alien, orphan, and widow. The people all say: Amen.

¹⁸ »Appoint judges and officers for your tribes in every city Jehovah your God gives you. They are to judge the people fairly. ¹⁹ »Never pervert justice. Always be impartial. Never take a bribe, because bribes blind wise people and deny justice to those who are in the right. ²⁰ »Only strive for justice so you will live and take possession of the land that Jehovah your God is giving you.

¹⁰ »Innocent blood will not be shed in your land that Jehovah your God gives you as an inheritance. Blood guiltiness will not be on you. ¹¹ »But if there is a man who hates his neighbor and lies in wait for him and murders him. If he flees to one of these cities, ¹² »the elders of his city will send for him. They will take him from there and deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood that he may die. ¹³ »Do not pity him. Purge the blood of the innocent from Israel that it may go well with you.

⁷ »If a man is caught kidnapping any of his brothers of the sons of Israel, and he deals with him violently or sells him, the thief shall die. You will purge the evil from among you.

¹ »When there is a dispute between men and they go to court, and the judges decide their case. They justify the righteous and condemn the wicked.

³ »The God of Israel has spoken. The protector of Israel said to me: ‘The king who rules with justice, who rules in obedience to God.

⁴ and especially because of all the innocent people he killed. Jehovah would not forgive Manasseh for that.

⁹ »You have sent widows away empty-handed. You crush the arms of the orphans.

⁹ »There are those who snatch the orphan child from the breast. They take as a pledge the infant of the poor.

⁷ »When I went out to the gate of the city, when I took my seat in the square, ⁸ the young men saw me and withdrew, and the aged rose up and stood. ⁹ »The nobles refrained from talking, and laid their hands on their mouths. ¹⁰ »The voices of princes were hushed. Their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths. ¹¹ »When the ear heard, it commended me, and when the eye saw, it approved. ¹² »This is because I delivered the poor who cried, and the orphan who had no helper. ¹³ »The blessing of the wretched came upon me. I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ »I put on righteousness and it clothed me. My justice was like a robe and a turban. ¹⁵ »I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame. ¹⁶ »I was a father to the needy! I championed the cause of the stranger. ¹⁷ »I broke the fangs of the unrighteous. I made them drop their prey from their teeth.

⁵ In his holy habitation God is a father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows.

² He will judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice. ³ The mountains shall bring prosperity to the people. The hills bring the fruit of righteousness. ⁴ He will judge the poor of the people. He will save the children of the needy, and will break the oppressor in pieces.

⁶ They kill widows and foreigners, and they murder orphans.

²¹ They join forces to take the lives of righteous people. They condemn innocent people to death.

¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

¹⁰ Do not remove the old landmark (boundry). And do not enter the field of the fatherless.

¹⁵ »When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you. Even though you offer many prayers, I will not listen because your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ »Wash yourselves! Become clean! Get your evil deeds out of my sight. Stop doing evil. ¹⁷ »Learn to do good (well) (right). Seek justice. Correct oppressors. Defend orphans. Plead the case of widows.« ¹⁸ »Come now, let us reason together (make things right) (correct matters) between us!« Says Jehovah. »Though your sins are like scarlet, they will become as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they will become as white as wool. ¹⁹ »If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land. ²⁰ »Refuse and rebel and swords will devour you. Jehovah has spoken.«

²³ Your rulers are rebels, friends with thieves. They all love bribes and run after gifts. They never defend orphans. They do not listen to the widows' pleas.

²⁸ »They grow big and fat. Their evil deeds have no limits. They have no respect for the rights of others. They have no respect for the rights of orphans. But they still prosper. They do not defend the rights of the poor.

⁵ »‘»For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly practice justice between a man and his neighbor, ⁶ if you do not oppress the alien, the orphan, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, nor walk after other gods to your own ruin,

²⁴ »If they want to brag, instead let them advocate (glory) (celebrate) that they understand and know me. They should advocate that I, Jehovah, act out of love, righteousness, and justice on the earth. This kind of celebration pleases me,« declares Jehovah.

¹² »‘O house of David, Jehovah says: »Administer justice every morning. Deliver the person who has been robbed from the power of his oppressor. That way I may not have to offer my wrath like fire and burn with none to extinguish it, because of the evil of your deeds.«’

¹⁷ »Your eyes and your heart are intent only upon your own dishonest gain. You are shedding innocent blood and on practicing oppression and extortion.«

¹⁶ The judges and the other people told the priests and prophets: »Since Jeremiah only told us what Jehovah our God had said, we do not think he deserves to die.«

⁷ »‘»People in you hate their fathers and mothers. They oppress foreigners in you. They oppress orphans and widows in you.«’«

¹⁹ »Egypt will be desolation, and Edom will be a desolate wilderness. This is because of the violence done to the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.

¹¹ The leaders judge for a bribe, and the priests teach for wages! The prophets predict for money yet they rely on Jehovah when they say: »Is not Jehovah in the midst of us? No evil will come upon us.«

⁸ He told you, O lowly man, what is good and what Jehovah requires of you. You should display justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God!

⁹ »Jehovah of Hosts has spoken: Every man should execute true judgment, and show kindness and compassion to his brother! ¹⁰ »Do not oppress the widow. Do not oppress the fatherless. Do not oppress the stranger and do not oppress the poor. And you should not devise evil in your heart against your brother. ¹¹ »They refused to pay heed, turned a stubborn shoulder (resisted), and stopped their ears, that they might not hear.

⁵ »I will approach you people for judgment! I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, the adulterers and those acting fraudulently with the wages of the worker, the widow and the fatherless. I will be a speedy witness against those who swear falsely and take advantage of the stranger, and do not show me reverence,« said Jehovah of Hosts.

²⁷ Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for the fatherless persons and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself without spot from the world.
