⁴² »God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven. It is written in the book of the prophets: O you house of Israel, have you offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

¹⁹ »Do not be tempted to bow down and worship the sun or moon or stars (the host or army of the heavens). Jehovah put them there a heritage for all the people under the heavens.

³ »Some worship and bow down to other gods, the sun, the moon, or the whole army of heaven. I have forbidden this.

²⁰ and if you leave him to serve foreign gods, he will turn against you and punish you. He will destroy you, even though he was good to you before.«

¹⁶ They broke all the laws of Jehovah their God. They made two metal bull-calves to worship. They also made an image of the goddess Asherah. Also they worshiped the stars and served the god Baal.

³ He built the high places that Hezekiah his father destroyed. He made altars for Baal. Then he made an Asherah as Ahab, king of Israel, had done. Manasseh was a worshipper and servant of all the stars of heaven.

²⁶ if I have looked at the sun when it shone, or the moon moving in splendor, ²⁷ and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my mouth has kissed my hand, ²⁸ this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges, for I would have denied God above.

¹⁰ For forty years I was grieved with this generation. I said: »It is a people who go astray in their hearts, and they have not known my ways.«

¹¹ »My people did not listen to my voice. Israel did not obey me. ¹² »Therefore I gave them over to their stubborn hearts. They walked in their own counsel.

²³ »You did not bring me sheep for your burnt offerings or honor me with your sacrifices. I did not burden you by requiring grain offerings or trouble you by requiring incense offerings.

⁴ »Therefore I will choose harsh treatment for them and bring on them what they fear. I called, but no one answered. I spoke, but they did not listen. They did what I consider evil. They chose what I do not like.«

¹⁰ But they rebelled and grieved (offended and hurt) his Holy Spirit. So he turned against them as their enemy. He fought against them.

¹³ »‘The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled like Topheth. They burned sacrifices to the heavenly hosts and poured out drink offerings to other gods on the rooftops of all of their houses.’«

¹⁶ So he took me to the inner courtyard of the Temple. There near the entrance of the sanctuary, between the altar and the porch, were about twenty-five men. They turned their backs to the sanctuary and were bowing low toward the east, worshiping the rising sun.

⁷ ‘»Suppose an Israelite or a foreigner who lives in Israel deserts me by devoting himself to idols and by allowing himself to sin. If he goes to a prophet to ask for my help, I, Jehovah, will give him an answer. ⁸ ‘»I will set my face against him (reject him), and I will make an example of him. I will exclude him from my people. Then you will know that I am Jehovah.’« ⁹ »‘If a prophet is tricked into giving a prophecy, it is I, Jehovah, who tricked the prophet. I will use my power against you and destroy you from among my people Israel. ¹⁰ ‘»Both of you will suffer for your sins. The prophet will be as guilty as you are when you ask for his help.

²⁵ »Then I gave them laws that are not good and commandments that do not bring life.

³⁹ »The Lord Jehovah says: ‘The Lord Jehovah tells all you Israelites to suit yourselves! Go on and serve your idols! But I warn you that after this you will have to obey me and stop dishonoring my holy name by offering gifts to your idols.’

¹⁷ Ephraim is joined to idols. Leave him alone.

²⁵ »Did you bring sacrifices and offerings to me in the wilderness for forty years, O house of Israel? ²⁶ »You have carried the tabernacle of your king and the shrine of your images, the star of your god, which you made for yourselves.

³⁶ »He brought them out. He showed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

²⁴ God gave them up to uncleanness because of the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves. ²⁵ They changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshiped and served the creation more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. ²⁶ For this cause God gave them up to vile affections for even their women changed the natural use into that which is against nature. ²⁷ Also the men left the natural use of the woman and burned in their lust, one toward another; men with men working that which is obscene. They receive full recompense due for their error. ²⁸ They did not like to retain God in their knowledge, so God gave them over to a reprobate (depraved) mind, to do things that are not fitting.

¹⁰ He will use every kind of wicked deceit on those who will perish. They will perish because they did not welcome and love the truth so as to be saved. ¹¹ So God dispatches the power of deceit (error) to work in them so that they are allowed to believe what is false. ¹² Then everyone who did not believe the truth, but was delighted with wickedness, will be condemned.

⁹ »Your forefathers examined (inspected) (scrutinized) me by proving (testing) me. And they saw my works for forty years.

¹⁵ Scripture says: »Today if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts. Do not be stubborn like those who rebelled.« ¹⁶ Who were they who heard God and rebelled? All who came out of Egypt with Moses rebelled. ¹⁷ With whom was he disgusted for forty years? He was disgusted and angry with those who sinned and died in the desert.
