¹ The high priest asked: »Are these things so?«

⁶¹ Later two witnesses came. They said: »This man said, ‘I am able to destroy the Temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.’« ⁶² The high priest stood up and said to him: »Have you no answer? What is it these say against you?«

⁵⁸ »We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.« ⁵⁹ Even so their witness did not agree. ⁶⁰ The high priest stood in the middle of them, and said to Jesus: »Do you not answer? What is it these say against you?«

¹⁹ The high priest asked Jesus about his disciples and about the things he taught. ²⁰ Jesus answered him: »I have spoken openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple where all the Jews gathered. I spoke nothing in secret. ²¹ »Why do you ask me? Ask them that heard me what I spoke to them. They know the things I said.«

³³ Pilate entered again into the Praetorium. He called Jesus and asked him: »Are you the King of the Jews?« ³⁴ Jesus answered: »You say this about me. Or did others tell you it concerning me?« ³⁵ Pilate answered: »Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me! What have you done?«

¹³ They brought false witnesses, which said: »This man will not stop speaking blasphemous words against this holy place and the law. ¹⁴ »We heard him say: ‘This Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.’«
