¹⁵ Samuel said to Saul: »Why have you disturbed me? Why did you make me come back?« Saul answered: »I am in great trouble! The Philistines are at war with me. God has abandoned me. He does not answer me any more by prophets or by dreams. Please tell me what to do.«

²⁰ She shouted: »Samson! The Philistines are coming!« He woke up and thought: »I will get loose and go free, as always.« He did not know that Jehovah had left him.

¹³ Samuel took the olive oil and anointed David in front of his brothers. Immediately the Spirit of Jehovah took control of David and was with him from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah. ¹⁴ Jehovah’s Spirit left Saul, and a distressing spirit sent by Jehovah tormented him.

⁶ So he asked Jehovah what to do. But Jehovah did not answer him. He did not answer by dreams or by the use of Urim and Thummim or by prophets.

⁸ Saul disguised himself. He put on different clothes. After dark he went with two of his men to see the woman. »Consult the spirits for me and tell me what is going to happen,« he said to her: »Call up the spirit of the man I name.«

¹¹ »Whom shall I call up for you?« The woman asked. »Samuel,« he answered.

¹² Saul was afraid of David, because Jehovah was with David but left Saul.

² He asked Jehovah: »Shall I go and attack the Philistines?« Jehovah answered: »Yes, Attack them and save Keilah.«

⁴ David consulted Jehovah once again, and Jehovah said to him: »Go attack Keilah! I will give you victory over the Philistines.«

⁹ David learned that Saul was planning to harm him. He told the priest Abiathar: »Bring the ephod!« ¹⁰ Then David said: »Jehovah God of Israel, I have actually heard that Saul is going to come to Keilah and destroy the city on account of me.

¹¹ Do not force me away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from me.

¹¹ You mourn at last, when your flesh and your body are consumed. ¹² You say: »How I have hated instruction! My heart despised reproof. ¹³ »I did not obey the voice of my teachers. I did not listen to my instructors!

¹⁴ The faithless in heart will be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from above.

¹⁷ »You have done this to yourself by abandoning Jehovah your God when he led you on his way. ¹⁸ »Why are you going to Egypt to drink water from the Nile (Shihor) River? You will not gain anything by going to Assyria to drink water from the Euphrates River.

¹² »Though they bring up their children, yet I will bereave them until no man is left. Yes, woe to them even when I depart from them!

⁴¹ »Then he will tell those on his left: ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the ever-burning fire that is prepared for the Devil and his [fallen] angels.

²³ »He was in great torment in the grave (hades). He looked up and saw Abraham, far away, with Lazarus at his side. ²⁴ »He called out: Father Abraham! Take pity on me! Please send Lazarus to dip his finger in some water and cool off my tongue. I am in torment in this fire! ²⁵ »Abraham said: Remember, my son, in your lifetime you were given good things, while Lazarus got all the bad things. Now he is enjoying himself while you are in torment. ²⁶ »There is a deep pit lying between us, so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot do so. And no one can cross over to us from where you are.
