¹ Solomon loved many women. They were of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites.

² The sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful. They married any of them they chose. ³ Jehovah said: »My Spirit will not contend (judge) (plead) with man forever, for he is mortal and corrupt. Therefore his days will be a hundred and twenty years.« ⁴ The NEPHILIM were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God had sexual intercourse with the daughters of men and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown. ⁵ Jehovah saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become. Every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.

¹⁸ »‘While your wife is living, never marry her sister as a rival wife and have sexual intercourse with her.

¹⁷ »He must not take many wives or his heart will turn astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.

¹ Solomon made an alliance with the king of Egypt by marrying his daughter. He brought her to live in David's City until he finished building his palace, the Temple, and the wall around Jerusalem.

⁸ He did likewise for all his strange wives, who made offerings with burning of perfumes to their gods.

²³ I saw the Jews who were married to women of Ashdod and Ammon and Moab: ²⁴ Their children were talking half in the language of Ashdod; they had no knowledge of the Jews' language, but made use of the language of the two peoples. ²⁵ I took up the cause against them, cursing them and giving blows to some of them and pulling out their hair. I made them take an oath by God, saying: »You are not to give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. ²⁶ »Was it not in these things that Solomon, king of Israel, did wrong? Among a number of nations there was no king like him. He was dear to his God, and God made him king over all Israel. But even he was made to do evil by strange women. ²⁷ »Are we then without protest to let you do all this great evil, sinning against our God by taking strange women for your wives?«

¹⁶ You will be able to resist any immoral woman who tries to seduce you with her smooth talk.

⁸ Keep far away from her. Do not go near the door of her house. ⁹ You will give your honor (majesty) to others and your years to the cruel one. ¹⁰ Strangers will be filled with your financial strength. Strangers will benefit from your hard work. ¹¹ You mourn at last, when your flesh and your body are consumed. ¹² You say: »How I have hated instruction! My heart despised reproof. ¹³ »I did not obey the voice of my teachers. I did not listen to my instructors! ¹⁴ »I was very near total ruin in the midst of the congregation.« ¹⁵ Drink water from your own cistern. Drink running water from your own well. ¹⁶ Should your waters overflow in the streets, like streams of water in public places? ¹⁷ Let them be yours alone. Do not share with strangers. ¹⁸ Let your fountain be blessed. Rejoice with the wife of your youth. ¹⁹ She is like a loving deer and a graceful doe. Let her breasts satisfy you at all times. Always be delighted with her love. ²⁰ Why will you be intimate with an immoral woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?

²⁴ This will keep you from the evil woman and from the smooth tongue of an adulterous woman.

⁵ That they may keep you from the adulteress, from the stranger with seductive words.

¹⁴ The mouth of the adulterous is a deep pit. The one who is cursed by Jehovah will fall into it.

³³ Your eyes will see strange things and your heart (and mind) will utter perverse things.
