¹ [For the Chief Musician. By David. A reminder.] Hurry, God, to deliver me. Come quickly to help me, LORD. ² Let them be put to shame and confounded who seek my soul. Let those who desire my ruin be turned back in disgrace. ³ Let them be turned back because of their shame who say to me, "Aha. Aha." ⁴ Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you. Let those who love your salvation continually say, "Let God be exalted." ⁵ But I am poor and needy. Come to me quickly, God. You are my help and my deliverer. LORD, do not delay.

¹ Moreover Ahithophel said to Absalom, "Let me now choose twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David tonight. ² I will come on him while he is weary and exhausted, and will make him afraid. All the people who are with him shall flee. I will strike the king only, ³ and I will bring back all the people to you, as a bride returns to her husband. You seek the life of only one man; then all the people will be in peace." ⁴ The saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel. ⁵ Then Absalom said, "Now call Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he says." ⁶ When Hushai had come to Absalom, Absalom spoke to him, saying, "Ahithophel has spoken like this. Shall we do what he says? And if not, speak up." ⁷ Hushai said to Absalom, "The counsel that Ahithophel has given this time is not good." ⁸ Hushai said moreover, "You know your father and his men, that they are mighty men, and they are fierce in their minds, like a bear robbed of her cubs in the field. Your father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people. ⁹ Look, he is now hidden in some pit, or in some other place. It will happen, when some of them have fallen at the first, that whoever hears it will say, 'There is a slaughter among the people who follow Absalom.' ¹⁰ Even he who is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, will utterly melt; for all Israel knows that your father is a mighty man, and those who are with him are valiant men. ¹¹ But, I strongly advise as follows, that all Israel be gathered together to you, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that you personally go into battle. ¹² So shall we come on him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light on him as the dew falls on the ground; and of him and of all the men who are with him we will not leave so much as one. ¹³ Moreover, if he be gone into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there isn't one small stone found there." ¹⁴ Absalom and all the men of Israel said, "The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel." For the LORD had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil on Absalom. ¹⁵ Then Hushai said to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, "Ahithophel counseled Absalom and the elders of Israel that way; and I have counseled this way. ¹⁶ Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying, 'Do not lodge this night at the fords of the wilderness, but by all means pass over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people who are with him.'" ¹⁷ Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying by En Rogel; and a female servant used to go and tell them; and they went and told king David. For they might not be seen to come into the city. ¹⁸ But a boy saw them, and told Absalom. Then they both went away quickly, and came to the house of a man in Bahurim, who had a well in his court; and they went down there. ¹⁹ The woman took and spread the covering over the well's mouth, and spread out bruised grain on it; and nothing was known. ²⁰ Absalom's servants came to the woman to the house; and they said, "Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?" The woman said to them, "They have gone over the brook of water." When they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. ²¹ It happened, after they had departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David. And they said to him, "Arise and pass quickly over the water; for thus has Ahithophel counseled against you."

¹³ Be pleased, LORD, to deliver me. Hurry to help me, LORD. ¹⁴ Let them be put to shame and confounded together who seek after my soul to destroy it. Let them be turned backward and brought to dishonor who delight in my hurt. ¹⁵ Let them be desolate by reason of their shame that tell me, "Aha. Aha." ¹⁶ Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you. Let such as love your salvation say continually, "Let the LORD be exalted." ¹⁷ But I am poor and needy. May the Lord think about me. You are my help and my deliverer. Do not delay, my God.

¹⁸ Draw near to my soul, and redeem it. Ransom me because of my enemies.

¹² God, do not be far from me. My God, hurry to help me.

⁷ Hurry to answer me, LORD. My spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me, so that I do not become like those who go down into the pit.

¹⁰ May all my enemies be ashamed and greatly terrified. May they turn back, suddenly ashamed.

⁴ Let those who seek after my soul be disappointed and brought to dishonor. Let those who plot my ruin be turned back and confounded.

²⁶ Let them be put to shame and confounded together who rejoice at my calamity. Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who magnify themselves against me.

¹³ Let my accusers be put to shame and consumed. Let them be covered with disgrace and scorn who want to harm me.

²⁹ Let my adversaries be clothed with dishonor. Let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

¹³ Therefore the word of the LORD will be to them precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little; that they may go, fall backward, be broken, be snared, and be taken.

¹¹ Look, all those who are incensed against you will be disappointed and confounded. Those who strive with you will be like nothing, and shall perish.

⁶ When therefore he said to them, "I AM," they went backward, and fell to the ground.

²¹ Yes, they opened their mouth wide against me. They said, "Aha. Aha. Our eye has seen it."

²⁵ Do not let them say in their heart, "Aha. Aha. Our desire." Do not let them say, "We have swallowed him up."

¹⁵ Let them be desolate by reason of their shame that tell me, "Aha. Aha."

¹⁷ Do not rejoice when your enemy falls. Do not let your heart be glad when he is overthrown; ¹⁸ lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

³ and tell the people of Ammon, 'Hear the word of the Lord GOD: Thus says the Lord GOD, "Because you said, 'Aha,' against my sanctuary, when it was profaned; and against the land of Israel, when it was made desolate; and against the house of Judah, when they went into captivity:

² "Son of man, because Tyre has said against Jerusalem, 'Aha, she is broken: the gate of the peoples; she is turned to me; I shall be replenished, now that she is laid waste':

² Thus says the Lord GOD: "Because the enemy has said against you, 'Aha.' and, 'The ancient high places are ours in possession'"';

¹⁸ Now this man obtained a field with the reward for his wickedness, and falling headfirst his body burst open, and all his intestines gushed out.

¹¹ But let all those who take refuge in you rejoice. Let them always shout for joy, because you defend them. And let those who love your name be joyful in you.

²⁷ Let them shout for joy and be glad, who favor my righteous cause. And let them say continually, "The LORD be magnified, who delights in the peace of his servant."

¹⁶ Let all those who seek you rejoice and be glad in you. Let such as love your salvation say continually, "Let the LORD be exalted."

¹² Be glad in the LORD, you righteous people. Give thanks to his holy Name.

¹⁰ I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

¹³ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Look, my servants shall eat, but you shall be hungry; look, my servants shall drink, but you shall be thirsty; look, my servants shall rejoice, but you shall be disappointed; ¹⁴ look, my servants shall sing in gladness of heart, but you shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall wail for anguish of spirit.

²⁵ The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul that seeks him.

²⁰ Truly, truly, I tell you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.

¹⁷ But I am poor and needy. May the Lord think about me. You are my help and my deliverer. Do not delay, my God.

²⁹ But I am in pain and distress. Let your salvation, God, protect me.

²² for I am poor and needy. My heart is wounded within me.

³⁷ "For in just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay.
