⁷ All the relatives of the poor shun him: how much more do his friends avoid him. He pursues them with pleas, but they are gone.

¹¹ My loved ones and my friends keep their distance because of my affliction. My kinsmen stand far away.

⁸ You have taken my friends from me. You have made me an abomination to them. I am confined, and I can't escape.

¹⁸ You have put lover and friend far from me, and my friends into darkness.

²⁰ The poor person is shunned even by his own neighbor, but the rich person has many friends.

²³ The poor plead for mercy, but the rich answer harshly.

⁴ Wealth adds many friends, but the poor is separated from his friend.

¹⁵ Now a poor wise man was found in it, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. ¹⁶ Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength. Nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

³⁸ He called out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me." ³⁹ Those who led the way rebuked him, that he should be quiet; but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have mercy on me." ⁴⁰ Standing still, Jesus commanded him to be brought to him. When he had come near, he asked him,

⁶ But you have dishonored the poor person. Do not the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?

¹⁵ And if a brother or sister is poorly clothed and may be lacking in daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you tells them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled;" and yet you did not give them the things the body needs, what good is it?

¹⁷ But whoever has the world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and closes his heart of compassion against him, how does the love of God remain in him? ¹⁸ Little children, let us not love in word only, neither with the tongue only, but in deed and truth.
