The increase of the wicked leads to sin. ¹⁷ He is in the way of life who heeds correction, but he who forsakes reproof leads others astray. ¹⁸ He who hides hatred has lying lips. He who utters a slander is a fool. ¹⁹ In the multitude of words there is no lack of disobedience, but he who restrains his lips does wisely. ²⁰ The tongue of the righteous is like choice silver. The heart of the wicked is of little worth. ²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many, but the foolish die for lack of understanding. ²² The LORD's blessing brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it. ²³ It is a fool's pleasure to do wickedness, but wisdom is a man of understanding's pleasure. ²⁴ What the wicked fear, will overtake them, but the desire of the righteous will be granted. ²⁵ When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more; but the righteous stand firm forever. ²⁶ As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to those who send him. ²⁷ The fear of the LORD prolongs days, but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. ²⁸ The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hope of the wicked will perish. ²⁹ The way of the LORD is a stronghold to the upright, but it is a destruction to evildoers. ³⁰ The righteous will never be removed, but the wicked will not dwell in the land. ³¹ The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but the perverse tongue will be cut off. ³² The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked is perverse.

³² He spoke three thousand proverbs; and his songs were one thousand five.

¹ The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel:

²⁰ A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish man despises his mother.

²¹ He who becomes the father of a fool grieves. The father of a fool has no joy.

²⁵ A foolish son brings grief to his father, and bitterness to her who bore him.

¹³ A foolish son is the calamity of his father. A wife's quarrels are a continual dripping.

¹⁵ My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine: ¹⁶ yes, my heart will rejoice, when your lips speak what is right.

²⁴ The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him. ²⁵ Let your father and your mother be glad. Let her who bore you rejoice.

¹ These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.

³ Whoever loves wisdom brings joy to his father; but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.

¹⁵ The rod of correction gives wisdom, but a child left to himself causes shame to his mother.

¹⁹ Who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have rule over all of my labor in which I have labored, and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.

⁹ Further, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge. Yes, he pondered, sought out, and set in order many proverbs.

⁶ They trust in their wealth, and boast in the multitude of their riches. ⁷ Truly these cannot redeem a person, nor give to God a ransom for him. ⁸ For the redemption of their life is costly, no payment is ever enough, ⁹ that he should live on forever, that he should not see corruption. ¹⁰ For he sees that wise men die; likewise the fool and the senseless perish, and leave their wealth to others.

⁴ Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.

²⁸ In the way of righteousness is life; in its path there is no death.

⁶ Getting treasures by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor for those who seek death.

² to deprive the needy from justice, and to rob the poor among my people of their rights, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey. ³ What will you do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth,

¹⁹ They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be as an unclean thing; their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels; because it has been the stumbling block of their iniquity.

²⁷ Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of your prosperity."

¹⁸ Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD's wrath, but the whole land will be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he will make an end, yes, a terrible end, of all those who dwell in the land.

¹⁵ He said to them, "Beware. Keep yourselves from all covetousness, for a man's life does not consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses." ¹⁶ He spoke a parable to them, saying, "The ground of a certain rich man brought forth abundantly. ¹⁷ He reasoned within himself, saying, 'What will I do, because I do not have room to store my crops?' ¹⁸ He said, 'This is what I will do. I will pull down my barns, and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. ¹⁹ I will tell my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, be merry."' ²⁰ "But God said to him, 'You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?' ²¹ So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."

²² It happened that the beggar died, and that he was carried away by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died, and was buried. ²³ In hell, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far off, and Lazarus at his bosom.

⁵ But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart you are storing up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

²¹ that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to everlasting life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

⁹ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own, that which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;

¹ Come now, you rich, weep and cry aloud for your miseries that are coming on you. ² Your riches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be for a testimony against you, and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up your treasure in the last days.

²⁰ In famine he will redeem you from death; in war, from the power of the sword.

⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short, the joy of the godless but for a moment? ⁶ Though his height mount up to the heavens, and his head reach to the clouds, ⁷ yet he shall perish forever like his own dung. Those who have seen him shall say, 'Where is he?' ⁸ He shall fly away as a dream, and shall not be found. Yes, he shall be chased away like a vision of the night.

²⁰ "Because he knew no quietness within him, he shall not save anything of that in which he delights. ²¹ There was nothing left that he did not devour, therefore his prosperity shall not endure. ²² In the fullness of his sufficiency, distress shall overtake him. The hand of everyone who is in misery shall come on him.

²⁸ The increase of his house shall depart. They shall rush away in the day of his wrath.

¹⁴ But you do see trouble and grief. You consider it to take it into your hand. You help the victim and the fatherless.

¹⁹ to deliver their soul from death, to keep them alive in famine.

⁹ Oh fear the LORD, you his holy ones, for there is no lack with those who fear him. ¹⁰ The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger, but those who seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.

³ Trust in the LORD, and do good. Dwell in the land, and enjoy safe pasture.

¹⁹ They shall not be disappointed in the time of evil. In the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

²⁵ I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his children begging for bread.

¹⁰ The wicked will see it, and be grieved. He shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away. The desire of the wicked will perish.

³² The wicked is brought down in his calamity, but the righteous has a refuge in his death.

¹⁶ he will dwell on high. His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks. His bread will be supplied. His waters will be sure.

⁶ Won't all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, 'Woe to him who increases that which is not his, and who enriches himself by extortion. How long?' ⁷ Won't your debtors rise up suddenly, and wake up those who make you tremble, and you will be their victim? ⁸ Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples will plunder you, because of men's blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all who dwell in it.

³⁰ But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today exists, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, won't he much more clothe you, you of little faith? ³¹ "Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What will we eat?', 'What will we drink?' or, 'With what will we be clothed?' ³² For the unbelievers seek after all these things, for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. ³³ But seek first the Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

²² He said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious for your life, what you will eat, nor yet for your body, what you will wear. ²³ Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing. ²⁴ Consider the ravens: they do not sow, they do not reap, they have no warehouse or barn, and God feeds them. How much more valuable are you than birds.

³¹ But seek his Kingdom, and these things will be added to you.

⁵ Be free from the love of money, content with such things as you have, for he has said, "I will never leave you or forsake you." ⁶ So we can confidently say, "The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can humans do to me?"

⁶ Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise; ⁷ which having no chief, overseer, or ruler, ⁸ provides her bread in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. ⁹ How long will you sleep, sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep? ¹⁰ A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ so your poverty will come as a robber, and your scarcity as an armed man.

²⁴ There is one who scatters, and increases yet more. There is one who withholds more than is appropriate, but gains poverty.

²⁴ The hands of the diligent ones shall rule, but laziness ends in slave labor.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing, but the desire of the diligent shall be fully satisfied.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep. The idle soul shall suffer hunger.

²⁴ The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he will not so much as bring it to his mouth again.

⁴ The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

¹³ Do not love sleep, lest you come to poverty. Open your eyes, and you shall be satisfied with bread.

⁵ The plans of the diligent surely lead to profit; and everyone who is hasty surely rushes to poverty.

³⁰ I went by the field of the sluggard, by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ Look, it was all grown over with thorns. Its surface was covered with nettles, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered well. I saw, and received instruction: ³³ a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep; ³⁴ so your poverty will come as a robber, and your want as an armed man.

¹⁸ By slothfulness the roof sinks in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaks.

²⁷ Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which remains to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For God the Father has sealed him."

⁵⁸ Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the Lord's work, because you know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

¹¹ We desire that each one of you may show the same diligence to the fullness of hope even to the end, ¹² that you won't be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherited the promises.

⁵ Yes, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence; and in moral excellence, knowledge; ⁶ and in knowledge, self-control; and in self-control patience; and in patience godliness; ⁷ and in godliness brotherly affection; and in brotherly affection, love. ⁸ For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful to the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ For he who lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. ¹⁰ Therefore, brothers, be more diligent to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never stumble.

⁶ Go to the ant, you sluggard. Consider her ways, and be wise;

⁸ provides her bread in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.

⁴ A worthy woman is the crown of her husband, but a disgraceful wife is as rottenness in his bones.

² A servant who deals wisely will rule over a son who causes shame, and shall have a part in the inheritance among the brothers.

²⁶ He who robs his father and drives away his mother, is a son who causes shame and brings reproach.

²⁵ the ants are not a strong people, yet they provide their food in the summer.

⁶ Seek the LORD while he may be found; call you on him while he is near: ⁷ let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

² and all these blessings shall come on you, and overtake you, if you shall listen to the voice of the LORD your God.

⁸ Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman had fallen on the couch where Esther was. Then the king said, "Will he even assault the queen in front of me in the house?" As the word went out of the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.

¹³ the blessing of him who was ready to perish came on me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy.

⁴² The upright will see it, and be glad. All the wicked will shut their mouths.

¹¹ The mouth of the righteous is a spring of life, but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

²⁶ People curse someone who withholds grain, but blessing will be on the head of him who sells it.

²⁵ but it will go well with those who convict the guilty, and a rich blessing will come on them.

²⁰ A faithful man is rich with blessings; but one who is eager to be rich will not go unpunished.

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God.

¹⁶ May the Lord grant mercy to the house of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain, ¹⁷ but when he was in Rome, he sought me diligently, and found me ¹⁸ (the Lord grant to him to find the Lord's mercy in that day); and in how many things he served at Ephesus, you know very well.

³⁶ To his son will I give one tribe, that David my servant may have a lamp always before me in Jerusalem, the city which I have chosen me to put my name there.

³⁴ 'For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David's sake.'"

¹⁶ They buried him in the City of David among the kings, because he had done good in Israel, and toward God and his house.

¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth. He shall have no name in the street.

²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

⁵ You have rebuked the nations. You have destroyed the wicked. You have blotted out their name forever and ever. ⁶ The enemy is overtaken by endless ruin; and the very memory of the cities which you have overthrown has perished.

¹³ Let his posterity be cut off. In the generation following let their name be blotted out.

¹⁵ Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth;

⁶ For he will never be shaken. The righteous will be remembered forever.

¹⁰ So I saw the wicked buried. Indeed they came also from holy place. They went and were praised in the city where they did this. This also is vanity.

¹³ LORD, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you shall be disappointed. Those who depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the spring of living waters.

⁹ Truly I tell you, wherever this Good News may be preached throughout the whole world, that which this woman has done will also be spoken of for a memorial of her."

⁴⁸ for he has looked at the humble state of his servant girl. For look, from now on all generations will call me blessed.

³⁴ Give me understanding, and I will keep your Law. Yes, I will obey it with my whole heart.

⁵ A wise man will hear and increase in learning, and a man of understanding will attain to sound counsel.

⁹ Instruct a wise man, and he will be still wiser. Teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.

¹⁰ The one who winks with the eye causes trouble, but the one who boldly rebukes makes peace.

¹ Whoever loves correction loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.

¹³ An evil man is trapped by sinfulness of lips, but the righteous shall come out of trouble.

³ He who guards his mouth guards his soul. One who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.

⁸ The wisdom of the prudent is to think about his way, but the folly of fools is deceit.

²³ In all hard work there is profit, but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty.

⁶ A fool's lips come into strife, and his mouth invites beatings. ⁷ A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are a snare to his soul.

¹² The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but a fool is swallowed by his own lips.

²⁴ "Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, will be compared to a wise man, who built his house on a rock. ²⁵ And the rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.

¹³ Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his good conduct that his deeds are done in gentleness of wisdom.

⁴ Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

²¹ Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait for you, LORD.

¹¹ But as for me, I will walk in my integrity. Redeem me, and be merciful to me. ¹² My foot stands in an even place. In the congregations I will bless the LORD.

¹¹ For the LORD God is a sun and a shield. The LORD will give grace and glory. He withholds no good thing from those who walk blamelessly.

²³ Then you shall walk in your way securely, and your foot won't stumble.

²⁰ One who has a perverse heart doesn't find prosperity, and one who has a deceitful tongue falls into trouble.

¹⁸ Whoever walks blamelessly is kept safe; but one with perverse ways will fall suddenly.

¹⁵ He who walks righteously, and speaks blamelessly; He who despises the gain of oppressions, who gestures with his hands, refusing to take a bribe, who stops his ears from hearing of blood, and shuts his eyes from looking at evil— ¹⁶ he will dwell on high. His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks. His bread will be supplied. His waters will be sure.

²⁶ Therefore do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing covered that will not be revealed; and hidden that will not be known.

¹ Meanwhile, when a crowd of many thousands had gathered together, so much so that they trampled on each other, he began to tell his disciples first of all, "Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. ² But there is nothing covered up, that will not be revealed, nor hidden, that will not be known.

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one will get his praise from God.

¹³ And the rest of the Jewish believers joined him in his hypocrisy; so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. ¹⁴ But when I saw that they did not walk uprightly according to the truth of the Good News, I said to Cephas before them all, "If you, being a Jew, live as the non-Jews do, and not as the Jews do, how can you compel the non-Jews to live as the Jews do?

²⁵ In the same way also there are good works that are obvious, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden.

¹² Why does your heart carry you away? Why do your eyes flash,

¹⁹ Do not let those who are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me; neither let those who hate me without a cause and wink their eyes.

¹³ who winks with his eyes, who signals with his feet, who motions with his fingers;

⁸ The wise in heart accept commandments, but a chattering fool will fall.

²¹ Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit.

¹⁰ Therefore, if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with wicked words. Not content with this, neither does he himself receive the brothers, and those who would, he forbids and throws out of the church.

³⁰ The mouth of the righteous talks of wisdom. His tongue speaks justice. ³¹ The law of his God is in his heart. None of his steps shall slide.

⁷ The lips of the wise spread knowledge; not so with the heart of fools.

²² Understanding is a fountain of life to one who has it, but the punishment of fools is their folly. ²³ The heart of the wise instructs his mouth, and adds learning to his lips. ²⁴ Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

⁴ The words of a man's mouth are like deep waters. The fountain of wisdom is like a flowing brook.

¹⁵ There is gold and abundance of rubies; but the lips of knowledge are a rare jewel.

¹² The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but a fool is swallowed by his own lips. ¹³ The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness; and the end of his talk is mischievous madness. ¹⁴ A fool also multiplies words. Man doesn't know what will be; and that which will be after him, who can tell him?

³⁴ You offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. ³⁵ The good person out of his good treasure brings out good things, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings out evil things. ³⁶ But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."

²⁹ Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but such as is good for building up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.

⁵ So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest. ⁶ And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For all kinds of animals, and birds, of reptiles and sea creatures, are being tamed and have been tamed by humankind. ⁸ But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

¹⁸ A wrathful man stirs up contention, but one who is slow to anger appeases strife.

²⁷ A worthless man devises mischief. His speech is like a scorching fire.

⁹ He who covers an offense promotes love; but he who repeats a matter separates best friends.

²⁵ One who is greedy stirs up strife; but one who trusts in the LORD will prosper.

²² An angry man stirs up strife, and a wrathful man abounds in sin.

⁴ Love is patient and is kind; love does not envy. Love does not brag, is not proud, ⁵ does not behave itself inappropriately, does not seek its own way, is not irritable, does not keep a record of wrongs; ⁶ does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; ⁷ bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

¹ Where do conflicts and quarrels among you come from? Do they not come from your passions that war in your members?

²⁰ let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death, and will cover a multitude of sins.

⁸ Above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins.

¹² The LORD said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, that they may come up on the land of Egypt and eat every plant of the land, even all that the hail has left."

⁹ Do not be like the horse, or like the mule, which have no understanding, who are controlled by bit and bridle, or else they will not come near to you.

³² He who commits adultery with a woman is void of understanding. He who does it destroys his own soul.

²² He followed her immediately, as an ox goes to the slaughter, as a stag leaping into a trap,

¹⁰ A rebuke enters deeper into one who has understanding than a hundred lashes into a fool.

²⁹ Penalties are prepared for scoffers, and beatings for the backs of fools.

³ A whip is for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the back of fools.

²² Though you grind a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with grain, yet his foolishness will not be removed from him.

⁴ The LORD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary: he wakens morning by morning, he wakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.

²² All testified about him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth, and they said, "Is not this Joseph's son?"

¹ An unfriendly man pursues selfishness, and defies all sound judgment.

⁷ A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are a snare to his soul.

¹⁵ The heart of the discerning gets knowledge. The ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

⁸ He who gets wisdom loves his own soul. He who keeps understanding shall find good.

²³ Whoever guards his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from troubles.

³⁵ The good person out of his good treasure brings out good things, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings out evil things.

⁴⁴ "The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid. In his joy, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.

⁵² And he said to them, "Therefore, every scribe who has been made a disciple in the kingdom of heaven is like a man who is a householder, who brings out of his treasure new and old things."

⁶ For it is God, who spoke for light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. ⁷ But we have this treasure in clay vessels, that the exceeding greatness of the power may be of God, and not from ourselves.

²⁴ "If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold, 'You are my confidence;' ²⁵ If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

⁶ They trust in their wealth, and boast in the multitude of their riches.

⁷ "Look, this is the man who did not make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and was confident in his desire."

²⁰ The poor person is shunned even by his own neighbor, but the rich person has many friends.

¹¹ The rich man's wealth is his strong city, like an unscalable wall in his own imagination.

⁷ All the relatives of the poor shun him: how much more do his friends avoid him. He pursues them with pleas, but they are gone.

²² Do not exploit the poor, because he is poor; and do not crush the needy in court; ²³ for the LORD will plead their case, and plunder the life of those who plunder them.

¹² For wisdom is a defense, even as money is a defense; but the excellency of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it.

²³ Thus says the LORD, "Do not let the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, do not let the rich man glory in his riches;

¹ Woe to those who devise iniquity and work evil on their beds. When the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand. ² They covet fields, and seize them; and houses, and take them away: and they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

²⁴ The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus answered again and said to them, "Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God.

¹⁹ I will tell my soul, "Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years. Take your ease, eat, drink, be merry."'

¹⁷ Charge those who are rich in this present world that they not be haughty, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy;

¹⁸ Wicked people earn deceitful wages, but one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward. ¹⁹ He who is truly righteous gets life. He who pursues evil gets death.

³⁰ The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he who plucks that life is wise.

¹⁰ Tell the righteous "Good." For they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. ¹¹ Woe to the wicked. Disaster is upon them; for the work of his hands will be done to him.

¹⁷ Even so, every good tree produces good fruit; but the corrupt tree produces evil fruit. ¹⁸ A good tree cannot produce evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree produce good fruit.

³³ "Either make the tree good, and its fruit good, or make the tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt; for the tree is known by its fruit. ³⁴ You offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.

¹⁹ For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.

²³ For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is everlasting life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁷ Do not be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a person sows, that he will also reap. ⁸ For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap everlasting life. ⁹ Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we do not give up.

¹⁷ and their word will consume like gangrene, of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; ¹⁸ who have erred concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past, and overthrowing the faith of some.

¹³ But evil people and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.

¹⁰ For God is not unrighteous, so as to forget your work and the love which you showed toward his name, in that you served the saints, and still do serve them.

¹⁶ It happened, as he talked with him, that the king said to him, "Have we made you one of the king's counselors? Stop. Why should you be struck down?" Then the prophet stopped, and said, "I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this, and have not listened to my counsel."

²⁵ but you have ignored all my counsel, and wanted none of my reproof; ²⁶ I also will laugh at your disaster. I will mock when calamity overtakes you;

³⁰ They wanted none of my counsel. They despised all my reproof.

¹ My son, do not forget my teaching; but let your heart keep my commandments: ² for length of days, and years of life, and peace, will they add to you.

¹⁸ She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her, and those who hold on to her are blessed

⁴ He taught me, and said to me: "Let your heart retain my words. Keep my commandments, and live.

¹³ Take firm hold of instruction. Do not let her go. Keep her, for she is your life.

¹² and say, "How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

²³ For the commandment is a lamp, and the Law is light. Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,

¹⁰ There is stern discipline for one who forsakes the way: whoever hates reproof shall die.

¹⁷ The words of the wise: Incline your ear and hear my words, and apply your heart to my instruction. ¹⁸ For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you, if all of them are ready on your lips. ¹⁹ That your trust may be in the LORD, I teach you today, even you.

¹ He who is often rebuked and stiffens his neck will be destroyed suddenly, with no remedy.

⁶ Do not allow your mouth to lead you into sin. Do not protest before the messenger that this was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice, and destroy the work of your hands?

²⁴ "Everyone therefore who hears these words of mine, and does them, will be compared to a wise man, who built his house on a rock. ²⁵ And the rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. ²⁶ And everyone who hears these words of mine, and does not do them will be like a foolish man, who built his house on the sand. ²⁷ And the rain came down, the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell—and great was its fall."

²⁸ But he said, "On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God, and keep it."

¹ Therefore we ought to pay greater attention to the things that were heard, so that we will not drift away.

²⁵ See that you do not refuse him who speaks. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned on the earth, how much more will we not escape who turn away from him who warns from heaven,

⁵ Yes, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence; and in moral excellence, knowledge; ⁶ and in knowledge, self-control; and in self-control patience; and in patience godliness; ⁷ and in godliness brotherly affection; and in brotherly affection, love. ⁸ For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful to the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. ⁹ For he who lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins. ¹⁰ Therefore, brothers, be more diligent to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never stumble. ¹¹ For thus you will be richly supplied with the entrance into the everlasting Kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

²¹ And Saul thought, "I will give her to him, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him." Therefore Saul said to David, "You shall this day be my son-in-law a second time." ²² Then Saul commanded his servants, "Talk with David secretly, and say, 'Look, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you. So now therefore be the king's son-in-law.'"

²⁹ then Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was Davidʼs enemy continually.

²⁷ When Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the midst of the gate to speak with him quietly, and struck him there in the abdomen, so that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

⁸ And David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house, and wash your feet." So Uriah went out from the presence of the king, and a gift from the king was sent after him. ⁹ But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. ¹⁰ And it was reported to David, saying, "Uriah did not go down to his house." So David said to Uriah, "Haven't you come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?" ¹¹ Uriah said to David, "The ark, Israel, and Judah, are staying in tents; and my lord Joab, and the servants of my lord, are camped in the open field. Shall I then go into my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As the LORD lives, and as you live, I will not do this thing." ¹² David said to Uriah, "Stay here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart." So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day. ¹³ And the next day David summoned him, and he ate and drank in his presence, and he made him drunk. But in the evening he went out and lay on a bed with the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. ¹⁴ It happened in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. ¹⁵ He wrote in the letter, saying, "Send Uriah to the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck, and die."

²³ It happened after two full years, that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baal Hazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king's sons. ²⁴ Absalom came to the king, and said, "See now, your servant has sheepshearers. Please let the king and his servants go with your servant." ²⁵ The king said to Absalom, "No, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome to you." But he pleaded with him; however he would not go, but blessed him. ²⁶ Then Absalom said, "If not, please let my brother Amnon go with us." The king said to him, "Why should he go with you?" ²⁷ But Absalom pleaded with him, and he let Amnon and all the king's sons go with him. And Absalom prepared a feast like a king's feast. ²⁸ And Absalom commanded his servants, saying, "Mark now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine; and when I tell you, 'Strike Amnon,' then kill him. Do not be afraid. Haven't I commanded you? Be courageous, and be valiant." ²⁹ The servants of Absalom did to Amnon as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons arose, and every man got up on his mule, and fled.

⁹ Joab said to Amasa, "Is it well with you, my brother?" Joab took Amasa by the beard with his right hand to kiss him. ¹⁰ But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab's hand. So he struck him with it in the body, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and did not strike him again; and he died. Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bikri.

⁹ For there is nothing reliable in their mouth. Their heart is destruction. Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they flatter.

² Everyone lies to his neighbor. They speak with flattering lips, and with a double heart.

³ He doesn't slander with his tongue, nor does evil to his friend, nor lifts up an insult against his neighbor.

²⁰ You sit and speak against your brother. You slander your own mother's son.

²¹ His mouth was smooth as butter, but his heart was war. His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

⁵ I will silence whoever secretly slanders his neighbor. I won't tolerate one who is haughty and conceited.

²⁴ A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but he harbors evil in his heart. ²⁵ When his speech is charming, do not believe him; for there are seven abominations in his heart. ²⁶ His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.

²⁰ They watched him, and sent out spies, who pretended to be righteous, that they might trap him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor. ²¹ They asked him, "Teacher, we know that you say and teach what is right, and are not partial to anyone, but truly teach the way of God.

¹ [For the Chief Musician. For Jeduthun. A Psalm by David.] I said, "I will watch my ways, so that I do not sin with my tongue. I will keep my mouth with a bridle while the wicked is before me."

²⁷ He who spares his words has knowledge. He who is even tempered is a man of understanding. ²⁸ Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is counted wise. When he shuts his lips, he is thought to be discerning.

³ For as a dream comes with a multitude of cares, so a fool's speech with a multitude of words.

¹⁹ This you know, my beloved brothers. But let every person be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger;

² For in many things we all stumble. If anyone does not stumble in word, this one is a perfect person, able to bridle the whole body also.

⁵ And God saw that the wickedness of humankind was great on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

²¹ And God smelled the pleasing aroma, and God said in his heart, "I will never again curse the ground because of humankind, nor will I again destroy every living thing, as I have done.

¹⁹ My fruit is better than gold, yes, than fine gold; my yield than choice silver.

¹⁸ There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.

⁴ A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but deceit in it crushes the spirit.

¹³ Righteous lips are the delight of kings. They value one who speaks the truth.

⁷ for as he thinks about the cost, so he is. "Eat and drink." he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

¹¹ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. ¹² As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover to an obedient ear.

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it?

³⁴ You offspring of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. ³⁵ The good person out of his good treasure brings out good things, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings out evil things.

³ Look, you have instructed many, you have strengthened the weak hands. ⁴ Your words have supported him who was falling, You have made firm the feeble knees.

¹² I haven't gone back from the commandment of his lips. I have treasured up the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

²¹ "Men listened to me, waited, and kept silence for my counsel. ²² After my words they did not speak again. My speech fell on them.

³⁰ The mouth of the righteous talks of wisdom. His tongue speaks justice.

²⁹ because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD.

³¹ Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own schemes.

²³ He will die for lack of instruction. In the greatness of his folly, he will go astray.

¹⁶ Why is there money in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, seeing he has no understanding?

⁹ Further, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge. Yes, he pondered, sought out, and set in order many proverbs. ¹⁰ The Preacher sought to find out acceptable words, and that which was written blamelessly, words of truth.

¹⁵ I will give you shepherds according to my heart, who shall feed you with knowledge and understanding.

¹⁶ Your words were found, and I ate them; and your words were to me a joy and the rejoicing of my heart: for I am called by your name, LORD, God of hosts.

⁶ My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you may be no priest to me. Because you have forgotten your God's law, I will also forget your children.

¹⁹ When anyone hears the word of the Kingdom, and does not understand it, the evil one comes, and snatches away that which has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown by the roadside.

¹⁹ This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light, because their works were evil. ²⁰ For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, so that his works will not be exposed.

¹⁵ So when they had eaten their breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." ¹⁶ He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep." ¹⁷ He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.

²⁸ Even as they refused to have God in their knowledge, God abandoned them to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not right;

² Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion, but voluntarily, as God wants; not for dishonest gain, but willingly;

² And I will make of you a great nation. And I will bless you and make your name great. And you will be a blessing.

² Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.

²³ that I will not take a thread nor a sandal strap nor anything that is yours, lest you should say, 'I have made Abram rich.'

³⁵ The LORD has blessed my master greatly. He has become great. He has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, male servants and female servants, and camels and donkeys.

¹² Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year one hundred times what he planted. The LORD blessed him.

¹⁷ and lest you say in your heart, "My power and the might of my hand has gotten me this wealth." ¹⁸ But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he swore to your fathers, as at this day.

¹⁸ But as for you, only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, so as not to covet and take of the devoted thing and make the camp of Israel accursed, and bring trouble on it.

¹ But the children of Israel committed a trespass in the devoted things; for Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of the devoted things. Therefore the LORD's anger burned against the children of Israel. ² Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is beside Beth Aven, on the east side of Bethel, and spoke to them, saying, "Go up and spy out the land." The men went up and spied out Ai. ³ They returned to Joshua, and said to him, "Do not let all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and strike Ai. Do not make all the people to toil there, for there are only a few of them." ⁴ So about three thousand men of the people went up there, and they fled before the men of Ai. ⁵ The men of Ai struck about thirty-six men of them, and they chased them from before the gate even to the Shebarim, and struck them at the descent. The hearts of the people melted, and became like water. ⁶ Joshua tore his clothes, and fell to the earth on his face before the ark of the LORD until the evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads. ⁷ Joshua said, "Alas, Lord GOD, why have you brought this people over the Jordan at all, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to cause us to perish? I wish that we had been content and lived beyond the Jordan. ⁸ Oh, Lord, what shall I say, after that Israel has turned their backs before their enemies. ⁹ For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will surround us, and cut off our name from the earth. What will you do for your great name?" ¹⁰ The LORD said to Joshua, "Get up. Why are you fallen on your face like that? ¹¹ Israel has sinned, and they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them. And they have even taken of the devoted things, and have also stolen, and also deceived. They have even put it among their own stuff. ¹² Therefore the children of Israel can't stand before their enemies. They turn their backs before their enemies, because they have become devoted for destruction. I will not be with you any more, unless you destroy the devoted things from among you. ¹³ Get up. Sanctify the people, and say, 'Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, for the LORD, the God of Israel, says, "There is a devoted thing in the midst of you, Israel. You cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the devoted thing from among you." ¹⁴ In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes. It shall be that the tribe which the LORD selects shall come near by families. The family which the LORD selects shall come near by households. The household which the LORD selects shall come near man by man. ¹⁵ It shall be, that he who is taken with the devoted thing shall be burnt with fire, he and all that he has, because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD, and because he has done a disgraceful thing in Israel.'" ¹⁶ So Joshua rose up early in the morning and brought Israel near by their tribes. The tribe of Judah was selected. ¹⁷ He brought near the families of Judah; and he selected the family of the Zerahites. He brought near the family of the Zerahites man by man, and Zabdi was selected. ¹⁸ He brought near his household man by man, and Achan, the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected. ¹⁹ Joshua said to Achan, "My son, please give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and make confession to him. Tell me now what you have done. Do not hide it from me." ²⁰ Achan answered Joshua, and said, "I have truly sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel, and this is what I have done. ²¹ When I saw among the spoil a beautiful garment from Shinar, two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, then I coveted them and took them. Look, they are hidden in the ground in the middle of my tent, with the silver under it." ²² So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent. Look, it was hidden in his tent, with the silver under it. ²³ They took them from the middle of the tent, and brought them to Joshua and to all the children of Israel. They laid them down before the LORD. ²⁴ Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the wedge of gold, his sons, his daughters, his cattle, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent, and all that he had; and they brought them up to the Valley of Achor. ²⁵ Joshua said, "Why have you troubled us? The LORD will trouble you this day." All Israel stoned him with stones, and they burned them with fire and stoned them with stones. ²⁶ They raised over him a great heap of stones that remains to this day. The LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger. Therefore the name of that place was called "The Valley of Achor" to this day.

⁷ The LORD makes poor, and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up. ⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust. He lifts up the needy from the dunghill, To make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's. He has set the world on them.

¹⁹ You shall speak to him, saying, 'Thus says the LORD, "Have you killed and also taken possession?"' You shall speak to him, saying, 'Thus says the LORD, "In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth, dogs will lick your blood, even yours."'"

²⁶ He said to him, "Did not my heart go with you, when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, and olive groves and vineyards, and sheep and cattle, and male servants and female servants? ²⁷ Therefore the leprosy of Naaman will cling to you and to your descendants forever." He went out from his presence a leper, as white as snow.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, when he is cut off, when God takes away his life? ⁹ Will God hear his cry when trouble comes on him? ¹⁰ Will he delight himself in Shaddai, and call on God at all times? ¹¹ I will teach you about the hand of God. That which is with Shaddai will I not conceal. ¹² Look, all of you have seen it yourselves; why then have you become altogether vain? ¹³ "This is the portion of a wicked man with God, the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from Shaddai. ¹⁴ If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword. His offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those who remain of him shall be buried in death. His widows shall make no lamentation. ¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare clothing as the clay; ¹⁷ he may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He builds his house as the moth, as a booth which the watchman makes. ¹⁹ He lies down rich, but he shall not do so again. He opens his eyes, and it is gone. ²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters. A storm steals him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind carries him away, and he departs. It sweeps him out of his place. ²² For it hurls at him, and does not spare, as he flees away from his hand. ²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

²² For such as are blessed by him shall inherit the land. Those who are cursed by him shall be cut off.

³⁸ He blesses them also, so that they are multiplied greatly. He doesn't allow their livestock to decrease.

⁷ He raises up the poor out of the dust. Lifts up the needy from the ash heap; ⁸ that he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.

²¹ An inheritance quickly gained at the beginning, won't be blessed in the end.

²² A stingy man hurries after riches, and doesn't know that poverty waits for him.

⁶ Won't all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, 'Woe to him who increases that which is not his, and who enriches himself by extortion. How long?' ⁷ Won't your debtors rise up suddenly, and wake up those who make you tremble, and you will be their victim? ⁸ Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples will plunder you, because of men's blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all who dwell in it. ⁹ Woe to him who gets an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the hand of evil. ¹⁰ You have devised shame to your house, by cutting off many peoples, and have sinned against your soul. ¹¹ For the stone will cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the woodwork will answer it. ¹² Woe to him who builds a town with blood, and establishes a city by iniquity.

⁴ I will cause it to go out," says the LORD of hosts, "and it will enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him who swears falsely by my name; and it will remain in the midst of his house, and will destroy it with its timber and its stones."

¹ Come now, you rich, weep and cry aloud for your miseries that are coming on you. ² Your riches are corrupted and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and your silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be for a testimony against you, and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up your treasure in the last days. ⁴ Look, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts. ⁵ You have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure. You have nourished your hearts in a day of slaughter.

¹⁴ who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the perverseness of evil;

⁹ Fools mock at making atonement for sins, but among the upright there is good will.

²¹ Folly is joy to one who is void of wisdom, but a man of understanding keeps his way straight.

¹⁸ Like a madman who shoots firebrands, arrows, and death, ¹⁹ is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, "Am I not joking?"

⁹ Rejoice, young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

²⁵ For the thing which I fear comes on me, That which I am afraid of comes to me.

²¹ A sound of terrors is in his ears. In prosperity the destroyer shall come on him.

² You have given him his heart's desire, and have not withheld the request of his lips. Selah.

⁴ Also delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

¹⁹ He will fulfill the desire of those who fear him. He also will hear their cry, and will save them.

⁴ I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears on them; because when I called, no one answered; when I spoke, they did not listen; but they did that which was evil in my eyes, and chose that in which I did not delight."

⁶ Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be filled.

¹⁸ I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.

²⁴ Until now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be made full.

²⁷ but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which will devour the adversaries.

¹⁴ This is the boldness which we have toward him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us. ¹⁵ And if we know that he listens to us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him.

¹⁸ How often is it that they are as stubble before the wind, as chaff that the storm carries away?

¹⁹ He lies down rich, but he shall not do so again. He opens his eyes, and it is gone. ²⁰ Terrors overtake him like waters. A storm steals him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind carries him away, and he departs. It sweeps him out of his place.

⁵ He doesn't lend out his money for interest, nor take a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things shall never be shaken.

⁹ For evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land. ¹⁰ For yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more. Yes, though you look for his place, he isn't there.

⁹ Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns, he will sweep away the green and the burning alike.

¹⁸ Surely you set them in slippery places. You throw them down to destruction. ¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed. They are completely swept away with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one wakes up, so, Lord, when you awake, you will despise their fantasies.

²⁷ when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when your disaster comes on like a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come on you.

³⁰ The righteous will never be removed, but the wicked will not dwell in the land.

³ A man shall not be established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous shall not be moved.

⁷ The wicked are overthrown, and are no more, but the house of the righteous shall stand.

²⁴ They are planted scarcely. They are sown scarcely. Their stock has scarcely taken root in the ground. He merely blows on them, and they wither, and the whirlwind takes them away as stubble.

¹⁸ I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this Rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

²⁰ being built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone;

¹⁹ laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold of that which is truly life.

¹⁹ However God's firm foundation stands, having this seal, "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Let every one who names the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness."

¹³ As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to those who send him; for he refreshes the soul of his masters.

²⁰ As one who takes away a garment in cold weather, or vinegar on soda, so is one who sings songs to a heavy heart.

⁶ One who sends a message by the hand of a fool is cutting off feet and drinking violence.

⁵ who say, 'Keep your distance, do not come near to me, for I am holier than you.' These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burns all the day.

²⁶ "But his lord answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant. You knew that I reap where I did not sow, and gather where I did not scatter.

¹¹ not lagging in diligence; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord;

¹² that you won't be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherited the promises.

³² It shall be accomplished before his time. His branch shall not be green. ³³ He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive tree.

¹⁵ Will you keep the old way, which wicked men have trodden, ¹⁶ who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream,

⁴ He asked life of you, you gave it to him, even length of days forever and ever.

¹¹ Come, you children, listen to me. I will teach you the fear of the LORD. ¹² Who is someone who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good? ¹³ Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking lies.

²³ But you, God, will bring them down into the pit of destruction. Bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days, but I will trust in you.

¹⁶ I will satisfy him with long life, and show him my salvation."

² for length of days, and years of life, and peace, will they add to you.

¹⁶ Length of days is in her right hand. In her left hand are riches and honor.

¹¹ For by me your days will be multiplied. The years of your life will be increased.

¹⁷ Do not be too wicked, neither be foolish. Why should you die before your time?

¹¹ As the partridge that sits on eggs which she has not laid, so is he who gets riches, and not by right; in the midst of his days they shall leave him, and at his end he shall be a fool."

²⁰ "But God said to him, 'You foolish one, tonight your soul is required of you. The things which you have prepared—whose will they be?'

¹³ So are the paths of all who forget God. The hope of the godless man shall perish,

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall fail. They shall have no way to flee. Their hope shall be the giving up of the spirit."

⁹ Therefore my heart is glad, and my tongue rejoices. My body shall also dwell in safety.

²⁴ You will guide me with your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. ²⁵ Who do I have in heaven? There is no one on earth who I desire besides you. ²⁶ My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

⁷ When a wicked man dies, hope perishes, and expectation of power comes to nothing.

²³ In hell, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far off, and Lazarus at his bosom. ²⁴ He called out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue. For I am in anguish in this flame.' ²⁵ "But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that you, in your lifetime, received your good things, and Lazarus, in like manner, bad things. But now here he is comforted and you are in anguish. ²⁶ Besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, that those who want to pass from here to you are not able, and that none may cross over from there to us.'

² through whom we also have our access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

¹² rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer;

¹³ Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope, in the power of the Holy Spirit.

¹⁶ Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us everlasting comfort and good hope through grace,

³ Is it not calamity for the unrighteous, and disaster for evildoers?

⁶ For the LORD knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked shall perish.

¹² There evildoers are fallen. They are thrust down, and shall not be able to rise.

²⁰ But the wicked shall perish. The enemies of the LORD shall be like the beauty of the fields. They will vanish—vanish like smoke.

⁷ They go from strength to strength. Everyone of them appears before God in Zion.

⁷ though the wicked spring up as the grass, and all the evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever.

¹⁵ It is joy to the righteous to do justice; but it is a destruction to evildoers.

³¹ But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

¹² I will strengthen them in the LORD; and they will walk up and down in his name," says the LORD.

²² Many will tell me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, did not we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?' ²³ And then I will tell them, 'I never knew you. Depart from me, you who practice lawlessness.'

²⁶ Then you will begin to say, 'We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.' ²⁷ But he will reply, 'I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of iniquity.'

⁸ But to those who are self-seeking, and do not obey the truth, but obey wickedness -- wrath and anger, ⁹ affliction and distress, on every human being who does evil, to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

¹³ I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

⁸ I have set the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

²⁸ For the LORD loves justice, and doesn't forsake his faithful ones. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off. ²⁹ The righteous shall inherit the land, and live in it forever.

⁵ God will likewise destroy you forever. He will take you up, and pluck you out of your tent, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.

¹ [A Song of Ascents.] Those who trust in the LORD are as Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but remains forever.

²¹ For the upright will dwell in the land. The perfect will remain in it. ²² But the wicked will be cut off from the land. The treacherous will be uprooted out of it.

²⁵ When the whirlwind passes, the wicked is no more; but the righteous stand firm forever.

²⁴ "Son of man, they who inhabit those waste places in the land of Israel speak, saying, 'Abraham was one, and he inherited the land: but we are many; the land is given us for inheritance.' ²⁵ Therefore tell them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "You eat with the blood, and lift up your eyes to your idols, and shed blood: and shall you possess the land? ²⁶ You stand on your sword, you work abomination, and every one of you defiles his neighbor's wife: and shall you possess the land?"'

⁹ You drive the women of my people out from their pleasant houses; from their young children you take away my blessing forever. ¹⁰ Arise, and depart. For this is not your resting place, because of uncleanness that destroys, even with a grievous destruction.

⁴¹ They told him, "He will utterly destroy those evil men, and will lease out the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him the fruit in its season."

³⁵ Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? ³⁶ Even as it is written, "For your sake we are killed all day long. We were regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." ³⁷ No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. ³⁸ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

¹⁸ Let the lying lips be mute, which speak against the righteous insolently, with pride and contempt.

¹¹ But the king shall rejoice in God. Everyone who swears by him will praise him, for the mouth of those who speak lies shall be silenced.

³ What will be given to you, and what will be done more to you, you deceitful tongue? ⁴ Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.

¹³ Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has discernment, but a rod is for the back of him who is void of understanding.

¹² to deliver you from the way of evil, from the men who speak perverse things;

¹¹ By the blessing of the upright, the city is exalted, but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.

⁶ The words of the wicked are about lying in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them.

² The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of fools gush out folly.

²⁸ The heart of the righteous weighs answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes out evil.

⁶ A fool's lips come into strife, and his mouth invites beatings. ⁷ A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are a snare to his soul. ⁸ The words of a gossip are like tasty morsels, and they go down into a person's innermost parts.

¹⁰ The Preacher sought to find out acceptable words, and that which was written blamelessly, words of truth.

⁸ and a sound message that cannot be condemned; that he who opposes you may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say about us.
