³⁴ And he did not speak to them without a parable; but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.

³⁶ Then Jesus sent the crowds away, and went into the house. His disciples came to him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the tares in the field." ³⁷ And he answered them, "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, ³⁸ and the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the children of the Kingdom; and the tares are the children of the evil one, ³⁹ and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. ⁴⁰ As therefore the tares are gathered up and burned with fire; so will it be at the end of the age. ⁴¹ The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will gather out of his Kingdom all things that cause stumbling, and those who do iniquity, ⁴² and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and the grinding of teeth. ⁴³ Then the righteous will shine forth like the sun in the Kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

¹⁵ And answering, Peter said to him, "Explain this parable to us." ¹⁶ So he said, "Do you also still not understand? ¹⁷ Do you not understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly, and then out of the body? ¹⁸ But the things which proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and they defile the person. ¹⁹ For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies. ²⁰ These are the things which defile the person; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the person."

¹⁰ And when he was alone, those who were around him with the twelve asked him about the parables.

¹⁷ When he had entered into a house away from the crowd, his disciples asked him about the parable. ¹⁸ He said to them, "Are you thus without understanding also? Do you not perceive that whatever goes into the person from outside cannot defile him, ¹⁹ because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, then into the latrine, cleansing all the foods?" ²⁰ He said, "That which proceeds out of the man, that defiles the man. ²¹ For from within, out of a person's heart, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts, ²² covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness. ²³ All these evil things come from within, and defile the man."

⁹ Then his disciples asked him, "What does this parable mean?" ¹⁰ He said, "To you it is given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of God, but to the rest in parables; that 'seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.'

²⁷ Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

⁴⁴ And he said to them, "This is what I told you, while I was still with you, that all things which are written in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms, concerning me must be fulfilled." ⁴⁵ Then he opened their minds, that they might understand the Scriptures. ⁴⁶ He said to them, "Thus it is written, for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,

²⁵ I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no more speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
