¹ "Call now; is there any who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn? ² For resentment kills the foolish man, and jealousy kills the simple. ³ I have seen the foolish taking root, but suddenly I cursed his habitation. ⁴ His children are far from safety. They are crushed in the gate. Neither is there any to deliver them, ⁵ whose harvest the hungry eats up, and take it even out of the thorns. And the thirsty swallow up their wealth. ⁶ For affliction doesn't come forth from the dust, neither does trouble spring out of the ground; ⁷ but man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward. ⁸ "But as for me, I would seek God. I would commit my cause to God, ⁹ who does great things that can't be fathomed, marvelous things without number; ¹⁰ who gives rain on the earth, and sends waters on the fields; ¹¹ so that he sets up on high those who are low, those who mourn are exalted to safety. ¹² He frustrates the devices of the crafty, So that their hands can't perform their enterprise. ¹³ He traps the wise in their own craftiness, and the counsel of the cunning are brought to a quick end. ¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the day time, and grope at noonday as in the night. ¹⁵ But he saves from the sword of their mouth, even the needy from the hand of the mighty. ¹⁶ So the poor has hope, and injustice shuts her mouth. ¹⁷ "Look, blessed is the man whom God corrects. Therefore do not despise the chastening of Shaddai. ¹⁸ For he wounds, and binds up. He injures, and his hands make whole. ¹⁹ He will deliver you in six troubles; yes, in seven there shall no evil touch you. ²⁰ In famine he will redeem you from death; in war, from the power of the sword. ²¹ You shall be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, neither shall you be afraid of destruction when it comes. ²² At destruction and famine you shall laugh, neither shall you be afraid of the animals of the earth. ²³ For you shall be in league with the stones of the field. The animals of the field shall be at peace with you. ²⁴ You shall know that your tent is in peace. You shall visit your fold, and shall miss nothing. ²⁵ You shall know also that your descendants shall be great, and your offspring as the grass of the earth. ²⁶ You shall come to your grave in a full age, like a shock of grain comes in its season. ²⁷ Look this, we have searched it, so it is. Hear it, and know it for your good."

² He said, "The LORD came from Sinai, and dawned from Seir upon us. He shone forth from Mount Paran. He came from the ten thousands of holy ones. At his right hand was a fiery law for them. ³ Yes, he loves the people. All his holy ones are in your hand. They sat down at your feet; each receives your words.

¹⁸ Look, he puts no trust in his servants. He charges his angels with error.

⁸ Have you heard the secret counsel of God? Do you limit wisdom to yourself? ⁹ What do you know, that we do not know? What do you understand, which is not in us? ¹⁰ With us are both the gray-headed and the very aged men, much elder than your father.

¹⁵ Look, he puts no trust in his holy ones. Yes, the heavens are not clean in his sight;

³ As for the holy ones who are in the land, they are the excellent ones in whom is all my delight.

¹⁶ They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron, the LORD's holy one.

¹ "Keep silent before me, islands, and let the peoples renew their strength. Let them come near, then let them speak. Let's meet together for judgment.

²¹ Produce your cause," says the LORD. "Bring forth your strong reasons," says the King of Jacob. ²² "Let them come near and declare to us what shall happen. Declare the former things, what they are, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or show us things to come. ²³ Declare the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that you are gods. Yes, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and see it together.

⁶ A senseless man doesn't know, neither does a fool understand this:

¹⁷ Fools are afflicted because of their disobedience, and because of their iniquities.

²² "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge? ²³ Turn at my reproof. Look, I will pour out my spirit on you. I will make known my words to you.

⁵ You simple, understand prudence. You fools, be of an understanding heart.

¹⁶ A fool shows his annoyance the same day, but one who overlooks an insult is prudent.

⁹ Do not be hasty in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.

¹¹ "Ephraim is like an easily deceived dove, without understanding. They call to Egypt. They go to Assyria.

⁹ God said to Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the vine?" He said, "I am right to be angry, even to death."

⁸ But to those who are self-seeking, and do not obey the truth, but obey wickedness -- wrath and anger,

⁶ For among them are those who crawl into households and take captive weak-willed women weighed down with sins, led away by various passions and pleasures,

¹⁵ 'Cursed is the man who makes an engraved or molten image, an abomination to the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.' All the people shall answer and say, 'Amen.' ¹⁶ 'Cursed is he who sets light by his father or his mother.' All the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁷ 'Cursed is he who removes his neighbor's landmark.' All the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁸ 'Cursed is he who makes the blind to wander out of the way.' All the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁹ 'Cursed is he who wrests the justice due the foreigner, fatherless, and widow.' All the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁰ 'Cursed is he who lies with his father's wife, because he has uncovered his father's skirt.' ¹⁸ "They are foam on the surface of the waters. Their portion is cursed in the earth. They do not turn into the way of the vineyards.

⁸ For what is the hope of the godless, when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?

³⁵ I have seen the wicked wielding great power, and towering like a cedar of Lebanon. ³⁶ And I passed by, and look, he was not. And I looked for him, but he could not be found.

²⁵ Let their habitation be desolate, and let no one dwell in their tents.

³ For I was envious of the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no struggles in their death, but their strength is firm. ⁵ They are free from burdens of men, neither are they plagued like other men. ⁶ Therefore pride is like a chain around their neck. Violence covers them like a garment. ⁷ Their sin proceeds forth from fatness. Their hearts overflow with imaginations. ⁸ They scoff and speak with malice. In arrogance, they threaten oppression. ⁹ They have set their mouth in the heavens. Their tongue walks through the earth.

¹⁸ Surely you set them in slippery places. You throw them down to destruction. ¹⁹ How they are suddenly destroyed. They are completely swept away with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one wakes up, so, Lord, when you awake, you will despise their fantasies.

⁷ though the wicked spring up as the grass, and all the evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever.

¹ You are righteous, LORD, when I contend with you; yet I would reason the cause with you: why does the way of the wicked prosper? Why are they all at ease who deal very treacherously? ² You have planted them, yes, they have taken root; they grow, yes, they bring forth fruit: you are near in their mouth, and far from their heart. ³ But you, LORD, know me; you see me, and try my heart toward you: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.

²⁰ For it is written in the scroll of Psalms, 'Let his habitation be made desolate, and let no one dwell in it;' and, 'Let another take his office.'

⁵ you must not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, and upon the children's children, on the third and on the fourth [generation] of those who hate me,

¹⁹ and look, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you."

¹⁰ The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions, are broken. ¹¹ The old lion perishes for lack of prey. The cubs of the lioness are scattered abroad.

⁴ If your children have sinned against him, He has delivered them into the hand of their disobedience.

⁷ Although you know that I am not wicked, there is no one who can deliver out of your hand.

¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath. Above shall his branch be cut off. ¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth. He shall have no name in the street. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor grandson among his people, nor any remaining where he sojourned.

¹⁴ If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword. His offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.

² lest they tear apart my soul like a lion, ripping it in pieces, while there is none to deliver.

⁹ Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. ¹⁰ Let his children be wandering beggars. Let them be sought from their ruins. ¹¹ Let the creditor seize all that he has. Let strangers plunder the fruit of his labor. ¹² Let there be none to extend kindness to him, neither let there be any to have pity on his fatherless children. ¹³ Let his posterity be cut off. In the generation following let their name be blotted out. ¹⁴ Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered by the LORD. Do not let the sin of his mother be blotted out. ¹⁵ Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth;

¹⁵⁵ Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek your statutes.

⁵ Blessed is the man who has his quiver full of them. They won't be disappointed when they speak with their enemies in the gate.

¹² For I know how many your offenses, and how great are your sins—you who afflict the just, who take a bribe, and who turn aside the needy in the courts.

⁴ Or those eighteen, on whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them; do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who dwell in Jerusalem? ⁵ I tell you, no, but, unless you repent, you will all perish in the same way."

³³ The fruit of your ground, and all your labors, shall a nation which you do not know eat up; and you shall be only oppressed and crushed always;

⁵¹ and shall eat the fruit of your livestock, and the fruit of your ground, until you are destroyed; that also shall not leave you grain, new wine, or oil, the increase of your livestock, or the young of your flock, until they have caused you to perish.

³ And so it was, when Israel had sown, that Midian, Amalek, and the Kedemites would come up against them. ⁴ And they camped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, as far as Gaza, and they left no sustenance in Israel, as well as sheep, or ox, or donkey. ⁵ For they came up with their livestock and their tents and their camels. They would come in like locusts in number, and they were innumerable. And they came into the land to ravage it. ⁶ Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried to the LORD.

¹¹ The angel of the LORD came, and sat under the oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained to Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

¹¹ Therefore the LORD brought on them the captains of the army of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh in chains, and bound him with fetters, and carried him to Babylon.

¹⁵ and Sheba attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."

¹⁷ While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "The Kasdim made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, and killed the young men with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you."

³ The LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? For there is none like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil. And he still holds firmly to his integrity, although you incited me against him, to ruin him without cause."

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper. Those who provoke God are secure, who carry their god in their hands.

⁸ For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he wanders into its mesh. ⁹ A snare will take him by the heel. A trap will catch him. ¹⁰ A noose is hidden for him in the ground, a trap for him in the way.

¹⁵ He has swallowed down riches, and he shall vomit them up again. God will cast them out of his belly.

⁸ The LORD has sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, "Surely I will no more give your grain to be food for your enemies; and foreigners shall not drink your new wine, for which you have labored:

³⁴ 'Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me, he has crushed me, he has made me an empty vessel, he has, like a monster, swallowed me up, he has filled his maw with my delicacies; he has cast me out.

⁴⁴ I will execute judgment on Bel in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he has swallowed up; and the nations shall not flow any more to him: yes, the wall of Babylon shall fall."

⁵ The LORD has become as an enemy; he has swallowed up Israel; he has swallowed up all her palaces and has destroyed its strongholds. He has multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

¹⁶ All your enemies have opened wide their mouth against you. They hiss and gnash the teeth; they say, "We have swallowed her up. Certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it."

⁷ For they sow the wind, and they will reap the whirlwind. He has no standing grain. The stalk will yield no head. If it does yield, strangers will swallow it up.

²⁷ were it not that I feared the provocation of the enemy, lest their adversaries should judge wrongly, lest they should say, 'Our hand is exalted, the LORD has not done all this.'"

⁹ And watch; if it goes up by the way of its own territory to Beth Shemesh, then he has done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us; it was a chance that happened to us."

²⁹ When he gives quietness, who then can condemn? When he hides his face, who then can see him? Alike whether to a nation, or to a man,

⁷ For we are consumed in your anger. We are troubled in your wrath.

⁷ I form the light, and create darkness. I make peace, and create calamity. I am the LORD, who does all these things.

³⁸ Doesn't both calamity and good come out of the mouth of the Most High?

⁴ They make promises, swearing falsely in making covenants. Therefore judgment springs up like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field.

⁶ Does the trumpet alarm sound in a city, without the people being afraid? Does disaster happen to a city, unless the LORD has done it?

¹⁵ looking carefully lest there be anyone who falls short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by it many become defiled;

¹⁷ To Adam he said, "Because you have listened to your wife's voice, and have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground for your sake. In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. ¹⁸ Thorns also and thistles will it bring forth to you; and you will eat the plants of the field. ¹⁹ By the sweat of your face will you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

¹ "Man, who is born of a woman, is of few days, and full of trouble.

⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence. ⁹ For all our days have passed away in your wrath. We bring our years to an end as a sigh.

⁸ All things are full of weariness beyond uttering. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

²² For what has a man of all his labor, and of the striving of his heart, in which he labors under the sun?

¹⁵ As he came forth from his mother's womb, naked shall he go again as he came, and shall take nothing for his labor, which he may carry away in his hand. ¹⁶ This also is a grievous evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go. And what profit does he have who labors for the wind? ¹⁷ All his days are in darkness and mourning, he is frustrated, and has sickness and wrath.

¹³ No temptation has taken you except what is common to humanity. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

⁷ Then Jacob was very afraid and was distressed. He divided the people who were with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two camps; ⁸ and he said, "If Esau comes to the one camp, and strikes it, then the other camp will escape." ⁹ Jacob said, "God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, who said to me, 'Return to your country, and to your relatives, and I will do you good,' ¹⁰ I am not worthy of the least of all the loving kindnesses and of all the faithfulness which you have shown to your servant; for with just my staff I passed over this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. ¹¹ Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear that he will come and attack me and the mothers with the children. ¹² You said, 'I will surely do you good and make your descendants as the sand of the sea, which canʼt be counted because there are so many.'"

¹² When he was in distress, he begged the LORD his God, and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers. ¹³ He prayed to him; and he was entreated by him, and heard his petition, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD was God.

⁵ If you want to seek God diligently, make your petition to Shaddai.

²¹ "Acquaint yourself with him, now, and be at peace. Thereby good shall come to you.

²⁷ You shall make your prayer to him, and he will hear you. You shall pay your vows.

⁵ Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will act.

¹⁵ Call on me in the day of trouble. I will deliver you, and you will honor me."

¹ [For the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm by Asaph.] My cry goes to God. Indeed, I cry to God for help, and for him to listen to me. ² In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord. My hand was stretched out in the night, and did not get tired. My soul refused to be comforted.

¹ Then Jonah prayed to the LORD, his God, out of the fish's belly. ² He said, "I called because of my affliction to the LORD. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice. ³ For you threw me into the depths, in the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your breakers and waves passed over me. ⁴ I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.' ⁵ The waters surrounded me, threatening my life. The deep was around me. The end is upon my head. ⁶ I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever: yet have you brought up my life from the pit, LORD my God. ⁷ "When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.

¹² For this cause I also suffer these things. Yet I am not ashamed, for I know him whom I have believed, and I am persuaded that he is able to guard that which I have committed to him against that day.

²³ Who, when he was cursed, did not curse back. When he suffered, did not threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously;

¹⁹ Therefore let them also who suffer according to the will of God in doing good entrust their souls to him, as to a faithful Creator.

¹⁰ He does great things past finding out; yes, marvelous things without number.

⁷ "Can you fathom the mystery of God? Or can you probe the limits of Shaddai? ⁸ They are high as heaven. What can you do? They are deeper than Sheol. What can you know? ⁹ Its measure is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

⁵ "Those who are deceased tremble, those beneath the waters and all that live in them. ⁶ Sheol is naked before him, and Abaddon has no covering. ⁷ He stretches out the north over empty space, and hangs the earth on nothing. ⁸ He binds up the waters in his thick clouds, and the cloud is not burst under them. ⁹ He encloses the face of his throne, and spreads his cloud on it. ¹⁰ He has described a boundary on the surface of the waters, and to the confines of light and darkness. ¹¹ The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his rebuke. ¹² He stirs up the sea with his power, and by his understanding he strikes through Rahab. ¹³ By his Spirit the heavens are garnished. His hand has pierced the swift serpent. ¹⁴ Look, these are but the outskirts of his ways. How small a whisper do we hear of him. But the thunder of his power who can understand?"

⁵ God thunders marvelously with his voice. He does great things, which we can't comprehend.

³ You asked, 'Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?' therefore I have uttered that which I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.

⁵ Many, LORD, my God, are the wonderful works which you have done, and your thoughts which are toward us. They can't be declared back to you. If I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

¹⁸ Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds.

¹⁰ For you are great, and do wondrous things. You are God alone.

¹⁸ If I would count them, they are more in number than the sand. When I wake up, I am still with you.

²⁸ And now, haven't you known? Haven't you heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the farthest parts of the earth, doesn't faint. He isn't weary. His understanding is unsearchable.

³³ Oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God. How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out.

²⁶ When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder;

²⁸ Which the skies pour down and which drop on humankind abundantly.

²⁶ To cause it to rain on a land where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man; ²⁷ to satisfy the waste and desolate ground, to cause the tender grass to spring forth? ²⁸ Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew?

⁹ You visit the earth, and water it. You greatly enrich it. The river of God is full of water. You provide them grain, for so you have ordained it. ¹⁰ You drench its furrows. You level its ridges. You soften it with showers. You bless it with a crop. ¹¹ You crown the year with your bounty. Your carts overflow with abundance.

⁸ who covers the sky with clouds, who prepares rain for the earth, who makes grass grow on the mountains.

²⁴ Neither do they say in their heart, 'Let us now fear the LORD our God, who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season; who preserves to us the appointed weeks of the harvest.'

¹³ when he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and he causes the vapors to ascend from the farthest parts of the earth; he makes lightnings for the rain, and brings forth the wind out of his treasuries.

²² Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain? Or can the sky give showers? Aren't you he, LORD our God? Therefore we will wait for you; for you have made all these things."

⁷ "I also have withheld the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest; and I caused it to rain on one city, and caused it not to rain on another city. One place was rained on, and the piece where it did not rain withered.

¹⁷ Yet he did not leave himself without witness, in that he did good and gave you rains from the sky and fruitful seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness."

²⁷ The God of old is a dwelling place. Underneath are the everlasting arms. He thrust out the enemy from before you, and said, 'Destroy.'

⁷ The LORD makes poor, and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up. ⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust. He lifts up the needy from the dunghill, To make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's. He has set the world on them.

¹⁴ "Because he has set his love on me, therefore I will deliver him. I will set him on high, because he has known my name.

⁴¹ Yet he lifts the needy out of their affliction, and increases their families like a flock.

⁷ He raises up the poor out of the dust. Lifts up the needy from the ash heap;

²⁴ All the trees of the field shall know that I, the LORD, have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish; I, the LORD, have spoken and have done it.'"

⁵² He has put down princes from their thrones. And has exalted the lowly. ⁵³ He has filled the hungry with good things. He has sent the rich away empty.

²¹ Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

⁹ But let the brother in humble circumstances glory in his high position;

⁶ But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. ⁷ Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. ⁹ Lament, mourn, and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to gloom. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

¹⁰ And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen and establish you.

¹⁵ It happened, when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their counsel to nothing, that we returned all of us to the wall, everyone to his work.

¹⁶ With him is strength and wisdom. The deceived and the deceiver are his. ¹⁷ He leads counselors away stripped. He makes judges fools.

¹¹ Though they intend evil against you, devising a wicked scheme, they will not succeed.

¹⁰ The LORD nullifies the counsel of the nations. He makes the thoughts of the peoples to be of no effect. ¹¹ The counsel of the LORD stands fast forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

¹⁷ For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous.

³⁰ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.

¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it will be brought to nothing; speak the word, and it will not stand: for God is with us."

³ The spirit of Egypt will fail in its midst. I will destroy its counsel. They will seek the idols, spirits of the dead, mediums, and spiritists.

³⁶ The angel of the LORD went out and struck one hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, look, these were all dead bodies.

¹¹ When Peter had come to himself, he said, "Now I truly know that the Lord has sent out his angel and delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from everything the Jewish people were expecting."

¹² When it was day, the Jews formed a conspiracy, and bound themselves under a curse, saying that they would neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul. ¹³ There were more than forty people who had made this conspiracy. ¹⁴ They came to the chief priests and the elders, and said, "We have bound ourselves under a great curse, to taste nothing until we have killed Paul. ¹⁵ Now therefore, you with the council inform the commanding officer that he should bring him down to you, as though you were going to judge his case more exactly. We are ready to kill him before he comes near." ¹⁶ But Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, and he came and entered into the barracks and told Paul. ¹⁷ Paul summoned one of the centurions, and said, "Bring this young man to the commanding officer, for he has something to tell him." ¹⁸ So he took him, and brought him to the commanding officer, and said, "Paul, the prisoner, summoned me and asked me to bring this young man to you, who has something to tell you." ¹⁹ The commanding officer took him by the hand, and going aside, asked him privately, "What is it that you have to tell me?" ²⁰ And he said, "The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the council tomorrow, as though they intended to inquire somewhat more thoroughly concerning him. ²¹ Therefore do not yield to them, for more than forty men lie in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse neither to eat nor to drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, looking for the promise from you." ²² So the commanding officer let the young man go, charging him, "Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me."

³¹ And it had been told to David, saying, "Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom." David said, "LORD, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness."

³⁴ but if you return to the city, and tell Absalom, 'Your brothers have left, O king, after your father left, and now I am your servant, O king. Allow me to live. As I have been your fatherʼs servant in the past, so now I am your servant,' then you will defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.

²³ When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey, and arose, and went home, to his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the tomb of his father.

⁴ The king said, "Who is in the court?" Now Haman had come into the outer court of the king's house, to speak to the king about hanging Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him. ⁵ The king's servants said to him, "Look, Haman stands in the court." The king said, "Let him come in." ⁶ So Haman came in. The king said to him, "What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor?" Now Haman said in his heart, "Who would the king delight to honor more than myself?" ⁷ Haman said to the king, "For the man whom the king delights to honor, ⁸ let royal clothing be brought which the king uses to wear, and the horse that the king rides on, and on the head of which a crown royal is set. ⁹ And let the clothing and the horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king's most noble officials, and let him clothe the man whom the king delights to honor with them, and have him ride on horseback through the city square, and proclaim before him, 'Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.'" ¹⁰ Then the king said to Haman, "Hurry and take the clothing and the horse, as you have said, and do this for Mordecai the Jew, who sits at the King's Gate. Let nothing fail of all that you have spoken." ¹¹ Then Haman took the clothing and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and had him ride through the city square, and proclaimed before him, "Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor."

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

²⁵ but when this became known to the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked device, which he had devised against the Jews, should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.

¹⁵ He has dug a hole, and has fallen into the pit which he made. ¹⁶ The trouble he causes shall return to his own head, and his violence shall come down on the crown of his own head.

¹⁵ The nations have fallen into the pit they had made. In the net which they hid, their feet are caught. ¹⁶ The LORD has made himself known. He has executed judgment. The wicked is snared by the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

²⁶ With the pure you show yourself pure. And with the crooked you show yourself tortuous.

⁷ For without cause they have hidden their net in a pit for me. Without cause they have dug a pit for my soul. ⁸ Let destruction come on him unawares. Let his net that he has hidden catch himself. Let him fall into that destruction.

³² For the perverse is an abomination to the LORD, but his friendship is with the upright.

⁵¹ He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

¹⁹ For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will nullify." ²⁰ Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn't God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, "He traps the wise in their craftiness."

²⁹ and you shall grope at noonday, as the blind gropes in darkness, and you shall not prosper in your ways: and you shall be only oppressed and robbed always, and there shall be none to save you.

²⁵ They grope in the dark without light. He makes them stagger like a drunken man.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked is like darkness. They do not know what they stumble over.

¹⁰ We grope for the wall like the blind; yes, we grope as those who have no eyes: we stumble at noonday as in the twilight; among those who are lusty we are as dead men.

⁹ It will happen in that day," says the LORD, "that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day.

¹⁰ The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

¹⁴ But you do see trouble and grief. You consider it to take it into your hand. You help the victim and the fatherless.

¹⁷ LORD, you have heard the desire of the humble. You will prepare their heart. You will cause your ear to hear,

¹⁰ All my bones shall say, "LORD, who is like you, who delivers the poor from him who is too strong for him; yes, the poor and the needy from him who robs him?"

⁴ He will judge the poor of the people. He will save the children of the needy, and will break the oppressor in pieces.

¹² For he will deliver the needy when he cries; the poor, who has no helper. ¹³ He will have pity on the poor and needy. He will save the souls of the needy.

³¹ For he will stand at the right hand of the needy, to save him from those who judge his soul.

¹² I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and justice for the needy.

⁷ But against any of the children of Israel a dog won't even bark or move its tongue, against man or animal; that you may know that the LORD makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.

⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust. He lifts up the needy from the dunghill, To make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's. He has set the world on them. ⁹ He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked will be put to silence in darkness. For no man will prevail by strength.

¹⁸ For the needy shall not always be forgotten; the hope of the poor shall not perish forever.

¹¹ But the king shall rejoice in God. Everyone who swears by him will praise him, for the mouth of those who speak lies shall be silenced.

⁴² The upright will see it, and be glad. All the wicked will shut their mouths.

³² What will they say to the kings of the nation? That the LORD has founded Zion, and in her the afflicted of his people will take refuge.

¹² Turn to the stronghold, you prisoners of hope. Even today I declare that I will restore double to you.

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever things the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be closed, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God.

¹² Blessed is the man whom you discipline, LORD, and teach out of your Law;

¹¹ My son, do not despise the discipline of the LORD, nor resent his correction. ¹² For whom the LORD loves he disciplines, and punishes every son he accepts.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus, 'You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as an untrained calf: turn me, and I shall be turned; for you are the LORD my God.

⁵ and you have forgotten the exhortation which reasons with you as with children, "My son, do not take lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose heart when you are corrected by him. ⁶ For whom the Lord loves he disciplines, and punishes every son he accepts." ⁷ If you are enduring discipline, God is dealing with you as children. For what child is there whom his father does not discipline? ⁸ But if you are without discipline, of which all have been made partakers, then you are illegitimate, and not children. ⁹ Furthermore, we had earthly fathers who disciplined us, and we paid them respect. Should we not much rather be subject to the Father of spirits, and live? ¹⁰ For they indeed, for a few days, disciplined us as seemed good to them; but he for our profit, that we may be partakers of his holiness. ¹¹ All discipline seems for the moment painful, not joyful; yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been exercised thereby.

¹² Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial, for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which he promised to those who love him.

¹¹ Look, we call them blessed who endured. You have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the Lord in the outcome, and how the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I rebuke and discipline. Be zealous therefore, and repent.

³⁹ "See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god besides me. I kill, and I make alive. I wound, and I heal; and there is no one who can deliver out of my hand.

⁶ "The LORD kills, and makes alive. He brings down to Sheol, and brings up.

³ He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

²⁶ Moreover the light of the moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter, like the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD binds up the fracture of his people, and heals the wound they were struck with.

¹ "Come, and let us return to the LORD; for he has torn us to pieces, and he will heal us; he has injured us, and he will bind up our wounds.

¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all.

³ For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, and from the deadly pestilence. ⁴ He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His truth is an encompassing shield. ⁵ You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day; ⁶ nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that wastes at noonday. ⁷ A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it will not come near you. ⁸ You will only look with your eyes, and see the recompense of the wicked. ⁹ Because you have made the LORD, my refuge, the Most High, your dwelling place, ¹⁰ no evil shall overtake you; no plague shall come near your dwelling.

¹⁶ For the righteous may fall seven times, but gets up again, but the wicked will stumble in adversity.

⁸ For we do not desire to have you uninformed, brothers, concerning our affliction which happened in Asia, that we were weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power, so much that we despaired even of life.

⁹ the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptation and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment;

⁷ God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.

⁶ And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening. And he drank from the wadi.

³ Though an army is deployed against me, my heart shall not fear. Though war should rise against me, even then I will be confident.

¹⁹ to deliver their soul from death, to keep them alive in famine.

¹⁹ They shall not be disappointed in the time of evil. In the days of famine they shall be satisfied.

⁷ Truly these cannot redeem a person, nor give to God a ransom for him.

¹⁰ You are he who gives salvation to kings, who rescues David, his servant, from the deadly sword.

³ The LORD will not allow the soul of the righteous to go hungry, but he thrusts away the desire of the wicked.

¹⁶ he will dwell on high. His place of defense will be the fortress of rocks. His bread will be supplied. His waters will be sure.

¹⁴ I will ransom them from the power of Sheol. I will redeem them from death. Death, where is your victory? Sheol, where is your sting? "Compassion will be hidden from my eyes.

¹⁷ For though the fig tree doesn't flourish, nor fruit be in the vines; the labor of the olive fails, the fields yield no food; the flocks are cut off from the fold, and there is no herd in the stalls:

⁶ You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled, for this must happen, but the end is not yet.

²⁰ In the shelter of your presence you will hide them from the plotting of man. You will keep them secretly in a dwelling away from the strife of tongues.

²¹ His mouth was smooth as butter, but his heart was war. His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

⁴ My soul is among lions. I lie among those who are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁵ You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day; ⁶ nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that wastes at noonday. ⁷ A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand; but it will not come near you.

¹⁸ There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.

¹⁷ No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; and you will condemn every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness which is of me," says the LORD.

¹⁸ Then they said, "Come, and let us make plans against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words."

⁵ So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest. ⁶ And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For all kinds of animals, and birds, of reptiles and sea creatures, are being tamed and have been tamed by humankind. ⁸ But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

²¹ This is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him: "The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.

¹³ You will tread upon the lion and the viper. You will trample the young lion and the serpent underfoot.

⁹ No lion will be there, nor will any ravenous animal go up on it. They will not be found there; but the redeemed will walk there.

²⁵ The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox; and dust shall be the serpent's food. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain," says the LORD.

²⁵ "'I will make with them a covenant of peace, and will cause evil animals to cease out of the land; and they shall dwell securely in the wilderness, and sleep in the woods.

¹⁸ In that day I will make a covenant for them with the animals of the field, and with the birds of the sky, and with the crawling creatures of the ground. I will break the bow, the sword, and the battle out of the land, and will make them lie down safely.

⁶ "'I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and no one will make you afraid; and I will remove evil animals out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.

¹² In their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. ¹³ You will tread upon the lion and the viper. You will trample the young lion and the serpent underfoot.

⁶ The wolf will live with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the young goat; The calf and the young lion will graze together; and a little child will lead them. ⁷ The cow and the bear will graze. Their young ones will lie down together. The lion will eat straw like the ox. ⁸ The nursing child will play near a cobra's hole, and the weaned child will put his hand on the viper's den. ⁹ They will not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.

¹⁵ "If I cause evil animals to pass through the land, and they ravage it, and it be made desolate, so that no man may pass through because of the animals; ¹⁶ though these three men were in it, as I live," says the Lord GOD, "they should deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only should be delivered, but the land should be desolate.

²² My God has sent his angel, and has shut the lions' mouths, and they have not hurt me; because before him innocence was found in me; and also before you, O king, have I done no wrong."

³⁸ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁶ You shall be blessed when you come in, and you shall be blessed when you go out.

³ When David and his men came to the city, look, it was burned with fire; and their wives, and their sons, and their daughters, were taken captive.

⁶ If you were pure and upright, surely now he would awaken for you, and make the habitation of your righteousness prosperous.

⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent. His lamp above him shall be put out.

¹⁵ There shall dwell in his tent that which is none of his. Sulfur shall be scattered on his habitation.

²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the unrighteous. This is the place of him who doesn't know God."

⁷ "Why do the wicked live, become old, yes, and grow mighty in power? ⁸ Their child is established with them in their sight, their offspring before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.

¹³ His soul shall dwell in prosperity, and his descendants shall inherit the land.

¹⁰ no evil shall overtake you; no plague shall come near your dwelling.

⁴ They wandered in the wilderness in a desert way. They found no city to live in.

⁴⁰ He pours contempt on princes, and causes them to wander in a trackless waste.

⁷ The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. ⁸ The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forth, and forevermore.

⁵ The LORD will create over the whole habitation of Mount Zion, and over her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night; for over all the glory will be a canopy. ⁶ There will be a pavilion for a shade in the daytime from the heat, and for a refuge and for a shelter from storm and from rain.

⁵ And he brought him outside, and said, "Look now toward the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them." And he said to him, "So will your descendants be."

⁹ "'I will have respect for you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and will establish my covenant with you.

⁴ You shall be blessed in the fruit of your body, the fruit of your ground, the fruit of your animals, the increase of your livestock, and the young of your flock.

¹³ He had also seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴ He called the name of the first, Jemimah; and the name of the second, Keziah; and the name of the third, Keren Happuch. ¹⁵ In all the land were no women found so beautiful as the daughters of Job. Their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers. ¹⁶ After this Job lived one hundred forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, to four generations.

¹⁶ There shall be abundance of grain throughout the land. Its fruit sways like Lebanon. Let it flourish, thriving like the grass of the field.

² His descendants will be mighty in the land. The generation of the upright will be blessed.

³ Look, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is a reward. ⁴ As arrows in the hand of a mighty man, so are the children of youth. ⁵ Blessed is the man who has his quiver full of them. They won't be disappointed when they speak with their enemies in the gate.

³ Your wife will be as a fruitful vine, in the innermost parts of your house; your children like olive plants, around your table. ⁴ Look, thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. ⁵ May the LORD bless you out of Zion, and may you see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life. ⁶ Yes, may you see your children's children. Peace be upon Israel.

³ For I will pour water upon the thirsty, and streams on the dry ground. I will pour my Spirit on your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants: ⁴ and they will spring up among the grass, as willows by the watercourses.

¹⁵ But you will go to your fathers in peace. You will be buried in a good old age.

⁸ Abraham breathed his last, and died in a good old age, an old man and satisfied, and was gathered to his people.

¹⁶ After this Job lived one hundred forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons' sons, to four generations. ¹⁷ So Job died, being old and full of days.

¹⁶ I will satisfy him with long life, and show him my salvation."

¹¹ For by me your days will be multiplied. The years of your life will be increased.

²⁷ The fear of the LORD prolongs days, but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

¹³ to keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command you this day for your good?

⁸ "Please inquire of past generations. Find out about the learning of their fathers. ⁹ (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days on earth are a shadow.) ¹⁰ Shall they not teach you, tell you, and utter words out of their heart?

² "No doubt, but you are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

¹⁷ "I will show you, listen to me; that which I have seen I will declare:

² "Can a man be profitable to God? Surely he who is wise is profitable to himself.

¹¹ "Look, I waited for your words, and I listened for your reasoning, while you searched out what to say. ¹² Yes, I gave you my full attention, but there was no one who convinced Job, or who answered his words, among you.

² The LORD's works are great, pondered by all those who delight in them.

³ Yes, if you call out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding; ⁴ If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures: ⁵ then you will understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

¹² If you are wise, you are wise for yourself. If you mock, you alone will bear it.
