¹ "But now those who are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to put with my sheep dogs. ² Of what use is the strength of their hands to me, men in whom ripe age has perished? ³ They are gaunt from lack and famine. They gnaw the dry ground, in the gloom of waste and desolation. ⁴ They pluck salt herbs by the bushes. The roots of the broom are their food. ⁵ They are driven out from the midst of men. They cry after them as after a thief; ⁶ So that they dwell in frightful valleys, and in holes of the earth and of the rocks. ⁷ Among the bushes they bray; and under the nettles they are gathered together. ⁸ They are children of fools, yes, children of base men. They were flogged out of the land. ⁹ "Now I have become their song. Yes, I am a byword to them. ¹⁰ They abhor me, they keep their distance from me, and do not hesitate to spit in my face. ¹¹ For he has untied his cord, and afflicted me; and they have thrown off restraint before me. ¹² On my right hand rise the rabble. Or in his calamity therefore cry for help? ²⁵ Did I not weep for him who was in trouble? Wasn't my soul grieved for the needy? ²⁶ When I looked for good, then evil came; When I waited for light, there came darkness. ²⁷ My heart is troubled, and doesn't rest. Days of affliction have come on me. ²⁸ I go mourning without the sun. I stand up in the assembly, and cry for help. ²⁹ I am a brother to jackals, and a companion to ostriches. ³⁰ My skin grows black and peels from me. My bones are burned with heat. ³¹ Therefore my harp has turned to mourning, and my pipe into the voice of those who weep.

²³ He went up from there to Bethel. As he was going up by the way, some youths came out of the city and mocked him, and said to him, "Go up, you baldy. Go up, you baldhead."

⁴ I am like one who is a joke to his neighbor, I, who called on God, and he answered. The just, the blameless man is a joke.

¹³ "He has put my brothers far from me. My acquaintances are wholly estranged from me. ¹⁴ My relatives have gone away. My familiar friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ Those who dwell in my house, and my maids, count me for a stranger. I am a foreigner in their sight. ¹⁶ I call to my servant, and he gives me no answer. I beg him with my mouth. ¹⁷ My breath is offensive to my wife. I am loathsome to the children of my own mother. ¹⁸ Even young children despise me. If I arise, they speak against me. ¹⁹ All my familiar friends abhor me. They whom I loved have turned against me.

⁸ The young men saw me and hid themselves. The aged rose up and stood. ⁹ The princes refrained from talking, and laid their hand on their mouth. ¹⁰ The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth.

¹⁵ But in my adversity, they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together. The attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I did not know it. They tore at me, and did not cease. ¹⁶ When I tripped, they mocked me relentlessly; they gnashed their teeth at me.

¹² Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards.

⁵ The people will be oppressed, everyone by another, and everyone by his neighbor. The child will behave himself proudly against the old man, and the base against the honorable.

⁶⁵ Some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to beat him with fists, and to tell him, "Prophesy." And the officers took him and beat him.

¹⁷ They clothed him with purple, and weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on him. ¹⁸ They began to salute him, "Greetings, King of the Jews." ¹⁹ They struck his head with a reed, and spat on him, and bowing their knees, did homage to him. ²⁰ When they had mocked him, they took the purple off of him, and put his own garments on him. ¹⁴ and said to them, "You brought this man to me as one that subverts the people, and see, I have examined him before you, and found no basis for a charge against this man concerning those things of which you accuse him.

¹⁸ But they all shouted out together, saying, "Away with this man. Release to us Barabbas"

³⁵ The people stood watching. The rulers also scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others. Let him save himself, if this is the Christ of God, his Chosen One."

³⁹ One of the criminals who hung there insulted him, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us."

⁵ But the Jews, being moved with jealousy, took along some wicked men from the marketplace, and gathering a crowd, set the city in an uproar. Assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them out to the people.

¹² One of them, a prophet of their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, and idle gluttons."

⁵ Look, as wild donkeys in the desert, they go forth to their work, seeking diligently for food. The wilderness yields them bread for their children.

I will be hidden from your face, and I will be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth. It will happen that whoever finds me will kill me."

¹⁰ Let his children be wandering beggars. Let them be sought from their ruins.

He is like the animals that perish. ¹³ This is the destiny of those who are foolish, and of those who approve their sayings. Selah.

⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

²² "How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? How long will mockers delight themselves in mockery, and fools hate knowledge?

²² Understanding is a fountain of life to one who has it, but the punishment of fools is their folly.

⁶ For the fool will speak folly, and his heart plans iniquity, to practice profanity, and to utter error against the LORD, To make empty the soul of the hungry, and to cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.

¹⁸ The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings to other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

²⁴ So she went out, and said to her mother, "What should I ask?" And she said, "The head of John the baptizer."

⁶ "But he has made me a byword of the people. They spit in my face.

¹⁴ You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

¹¹ When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them. ¹² Those who sit in the gate talk about me. I am the song of the drunkards.

¹⁴ I have become a laughingstock to all peoples, and their song all the day.

⁶³ Look their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their mocking song.

¹⁴ The LORD said to Moses, "If her father had but spit in her face, shouldn't she be ashamed seven days? Let her be shut up outside of the camp seven days, and after that she shall be brought in again."

⁹ then his brother's wife shall come to him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face; and she shall answer and say, "So shall it be done to the man who does not build up his brother's house."

⁷ All the relatives of the poor shun him: how much more do his friends avoid him. He pursues them with pleas, but they are gone.

⁶ I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who tore out my beard; I did not cover my face from insults and spitting.

⁸ I cut off the three shepherds in one month; for my soul was weary of them, and their soul also loathed me.

¹⁸ He loosens the bond of kings. He binds their waist with a belt.

²¹ He pours contempt on princes, and loosens the belt of the strong.

⁹ Do not be like the horse, or like the mule, which have no understanding, who are controlled by bit and bridle, or else they will not come near to you.

²¹ Yes, they opened their mouth wide against me. They said, "Aha. Aha. Our eye has seen it."

⁶⁷ Then they spit in his face and beat him with their fists, and some slapped him, ⁶⁸ saying, "Prophesy to us, you Christ. Who hit you?"

³⁹ Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads, ⁴⁰ and saying, "You who destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross." ⁴¹ Likewise the chief priests also mocking, with the scribes, and the elders, said, ⁴² "He saved others, but he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. ⁴³ He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'" ⁴⁴ The robbers also who were crucified with him insulted him in the same way.

²⁶ If anyone thinks himself to be religious while he does not control his tongue, but deceives his heart, this one's religion is worthless.

¹² His troops come on together, build a siege ramp against me, and camp around my tent.

¹⁸ Even young children despise me. If I arise, they speak against me.

⁴ LORD, keep me from the hands of the wicked. Preserve me from the violent men who have determined to trip my feet. ⁵ The proud have hidden a snare for me, they have spread the cords of a net by the path. They have set traps for me. Selah.

²⁶ For they persecute him whom you have wounded. They tell of the sorrow of those whom you have hurt.

¹² As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. My people, those who lead you cause you to err, and destroy the way of your paths.

¹⁵ I am very angry with the nations that are at ease; for I was but only a little angry, but they added to the calamity."

¹⁶ who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream,

⁴ The waves of death surrounded me, and the currents of ungodliness overwhelmed me.

¹⁴ Deliver me out of the mire, and do not let me sink. Let me be delivered from those who hate me, and out of the deep waters. ¹⁵ Do not let the flood waters overwhelm me, neither let the deep swallow me up. Do not let the pit shut its mouth on me.

⁷ now therefore, look, the LORD brings upon them the mighty flood waters of the River: the king of Assyria and all his glory. It will come up over all its channels, and go over all its banks. ⁸ It will sweep onward into Judah. It will overflow and pass through; it will reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of its wings will fill the breadth of your land, Immanuel.

²⁵ For the thing which I fear comes on me, That which I am afraid of comes to me.

⁴ For the arrows of Shaddai are within me. My spirit drinks up their poison. The terrors of God set themselves in array against me.

⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away, so he who goes down to Sheol shall come up no more.

¹⁴ then you scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions:

²⁷ If I say, 'I will forget my complaint, I will put off my sad face, and cheer up;' ²⁸ I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that you will not hold me innocent.

¹⁶ And if I lift myself up, you hunt me like a lion. Again you show yourself powerful to me.

²³ For calamity from God is a terror to me. Because his majesty, I can do nothing.

⁴ My heart is severely pained within me. The terrors of death have fallen on me. ⁵ Fearfulness and trembling have come on me. Horror has overwhelmed me.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up. While I suffer your terrors, I am distracted.

²² I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, your transgressions, and, as a cloud, your sins. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.

⁴ "Ephraim, what shall I do to you? Judah, what shall I do to you? For your love is like a morning cloud, and like the dew that disappears early.

³ Therefore they will be like the morning mist, and like the dew that passes away early, like the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the threshing floor, and like the smoke out of the chimney.

¹⁵ And Hannah answered, "No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before the LORD.

² Be gracious to me, LORD, for I am frail. LORD, heal me, for my bones are trembling. ³ And my soul is greatly troubled. But you, LORD, how long? ⁴ Return, LORD. Deliver my soul. ¹³ I waited patiently until morning. He breaks all my bones like a lion. From day even to night you will make an end of me.

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot to the top of his head.

⁵ My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust. My skin closes up, and breaks out afresh.

²⁰ My bones stick to my skin and to my flesh. I have escaped by the skin of my teeth.

⁵ My wounds are loathsome and corrupt, because of my foolishness.

⁵ Why should you be beaten more, that you revolt more and more? The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. ⁶ From the sole of the foot even to the head there is no soundness in it: wounds, welts, and open sores. They haven't been closed, neither bandaged, neither soothed with oil.

²⁷ Abraham answered, "Look, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes.

⁷ "Look, I cry out 'Injustice.' but there is no justice.

⁹ Will God hear his cry when trouble comes on him?

⁴ LORD God of hosts, How long will you be angry against the prayer of your people? ⁵ You have fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in large measure.

⁸ Yes, when I cry, and call for help, he shuts out my prayer.

⁴⁴ You have covered yourself with a cloud, so that no prayer can pass through.

²³ But he did not answer her a word. His disciples came and pleaded with him, saying, "Send her away, for she keeps shouting at us."

⁹ even that it would please God to crush me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off.

²⁰ If I have sinned, what do I do to you, you watcher of men? Why have you set me as a mark for you, so that I am a burden to myself? ²¹ Why do you not pardon my disobedience, and take away my iniquity? For now shall I lie down in the dust. You will seek me diligently, but I shall not be."

³ Is it good to you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and smile on the counsel of the wicked?

¹⁴ if I sin, then you mark me. You will not acquit me from my iniquity. ¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe to me. If I am righteous, I still shall not lift up my head, being filled with disgrace, and conscious of my affliction. ¹⁶ And if I lift myself up, you hunt me like a lion. Again you show yourself powerful to me. ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation on me. Changes and warfare are with me.

²⁵ Will you harass a driven leaf? Will you pursue the dry stubble? ²⁶ For you write bitter things against me, and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth: ²⁷ You also put my feet in the stocks, and mark all my paths. You set a bound to the soles of my feet, ²⁸ though I am decaying like a rotten thing, like a garment that is moth-eaten.

⁹ He has torn me in his wrath, and persecuted me. He has gnashed on me with his teeth. My adversary sharpens his eyes on me. ¹⁰ They have gaped on me with their mouth. They have struck me on the cheek reproachfully. They gather themselves together against me. ¹¹ God delivers me to the ungodly, and casts me into the hands of the wicked. ¹² I was at ease, and he broke me apart. Yes, he has taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces. He has also set me up for his target. ¹³ His archers surround me. He splits my kidneys apart, and does not spare. He pours out my gall on the ground. ¹⁴ He breaks me with breach on breach. He runs on me like a giant.

⁶ know now that God has subverted me, and has surrounded me with his net. ⁷ "Look, I cry out 'Injustice.' but there is no justice. ⁸ He has walled up my way so that I can't pass, and has set darkness in my paths. ⁹ He has stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head.

²² Why do you persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?

⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? No, but he would listen to me.

⁷ "Will the Lord reject us forever? Will he be favorable no more? ⁸ Has his loving kindness vanished forever? Does his promise fail for generations? ⁹ Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he, in anger, withheld his compassion?" Selah.

¹³ You have a mighty arm. Your hand is strong, and your right hand is exalted.

¹⁴ All your lovers have forgotten you; they do not seek you: for I have wounded you with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the greatness of your iniquity, because your sins were increased.

⁶ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;

¹⁷ For he bruises me with a storm, and multiplies my wounds without cause.

¹⁸ How often is it that they are as stubble before the wind, as chaff that the storm carries away?

²¹ The east wind carries him away, and he departs. It sweeps him out of his place.

⁴ Not so with the wicked; instead, they are like the chaff which the wind drives away from the surface of the ground.

¹⁰ He rode on a cherub, and flew. Yes, he soared on the wings of the wind.

³ He lays the beams of his chambers in the waters. He makes the clouds his chariot. He walks on the wings of the wind.

¹³ The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters: but he will rebuke them, and they will flee far off, and will be chased like the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like the whirling dust before the storm.

¹¹ At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, "A hot wind from the bare heights in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to winnow, nor to cleanse; ¹² a full wind from these shall come for me. Now I will also utter judgments against them."

² A third part you shall burn in the fire in the midst of the city, when the days of the siege are fulfilled; and you shall take a third part, and strike with the sword around it; and a third part you shall scatter to the wind, and I will draw out a sword after them.

¹⁹ The wind has wrapped her up in its wings; and they shall be disappointed because of their sacrifices.

¹⁹ By the sweat of your face will you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

¹⁴ For we must die, and are as water split on the ground, which can't be gathered up again; neither does God take away life, but devises means, that he who is banished not be an outcast from him.

¹⁹ The small and the great are there. The servant is free from his master.

²² "It is all the same. Therefore I say he destroys the blameless and the wicked.

⁸ "'Your hands have framed me and fashioned me altogether, yet you destroy me.

⁵ Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his bounds that he can't pass;

²⁷ Inasmuch as it is appointed for people to die once, and after this, judgment,

³¹ So let all your enemies perish, LORD, but let those who love you be as the sun when it rises forth in its strength." And the land had rest forty years.

²⁵ Do not let them say in their heart, "Aha. Aha. Our desire." Do not let them say, "We have swallowed him up."

⁴ They turn the needy out of the way. The poor of the earth all hide themselves.

¹⁶ "If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail, ¹⁷ or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it ¹⁸ (no, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, her have I guided from my mother's womb); ¹⁹ if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering; ²⁰ if his heart hasn't blessed me, if he hasn't been warmed with my sheep's fleece; ²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate,

²¹ He who despises his neighbor sins, but blessed is he who shows kindness to the poor.

³¹ He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy honors him.

⁵ Whoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker. He who is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

¹⁷ He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD; he will reward him.

⁸ He who increases his wealth by excessive interest gathers it for one who has pity on the poor.

⁷ Isn't it to distribute your bread to the hungry, and that you bring the poor who are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you not hide yourself from your own flesh? ⁸ Then your light shall break forth as the morning, and your healing shall spring forth speedily; and your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.

¹⁷ But if you will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret for your pride; and my eye shall weep bitterly, and run down with tears, because the LORD's flock is taken captive."

²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? For they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before you to speak good for them, to turn away your wrath from them.

²⁷ Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of your prosperity."

⁴¹ When he drew near, he saw the city and wept over it,

³⁵ Jesus wept.

¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice. Weep with those who weep.

⁹ As it is written, "He has scattered, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever."

²⁵ For the thing which I fear comes on me, That which I am afraid of comes to me. ²⁶ I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither have I rest; but trouble comes."

⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent. His lamp above him shall be put out.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

⁸ He has walled up my way so that I can't pass, and has set darkness in my paths.

¹⁷ Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither did he cover the thick darkness from my face.

¹⁸ Then I said, 'I shall die in my own house, I shall number my days as the sand.

¹¹ Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

¹⁰ Who is among you who fears the LORD, who listens to the voice of his servant? He who walks in darkness, and has no light, let him trust in the name of the LORD, and rely on his God.

⁴ Our fathers trusted in you. They trusted, and you delivered them.

¹⁹ My anguish, my anguish. I am pained at my very heart; my heart is disquieted in me; I can't hold my peace; because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.

⁴ a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

⁴ My heart flutters. Horror has frightened me. The twilight that I desired has been turned into trembling for me.

¹² In that day the LORD of hosts called for weeping and for mourning, for shaved heads, and for the wearing of sackcloth.

⁷ The new wine mourns. The vine languishes. All the merry-hearted sigh. ⁸ The mirth of tambourines ceases. The sound of those who rejoice ends. The joy of the harp ceases. ⁹ They will not drink wine with a song. Strong drink will be bitter to those who drink it.

¹⁵ The joy of our heart has ceased; our dancing is turned into mourning.

¹⁸ Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were instruments of music brought before him. And his sleep fled from him.
