⁷ But now he has worn me out. You have laid waste all my company.

Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you." ¹⁶ While he was still speaking, there also came another, and said, "The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the young men, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you." ¹⁷ While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "The Kasdim made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, and killed the young men with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you." ¹⁸ While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house, ¹⁹ and look, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you."

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling. There the weary are at rest.

³ so am I made to possess months of misery, wearisome nights are appointed to me.

¹⁶ I loathe my life. I do not want to live forever. Leave me alone, for my days are but a breath.

⁵ when Shaddai was yet with me, and my children were around me, ⁶ when my steps were washed with butter, and the rock poured out streams of oil for me, ⁷ when I went forth to the city gate, when I prepared my seat in the street. ⁸ The young men saw me and hid themselves. The aged rose up and stood. ⁹ The princes refrained from talking, and laid their hand on their mouth. ¹⁰ The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ For when the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it commended me: ¹² Because I delivered the poor who cried, and the fatherless also, who had none to help him, ¹³ the blessing of him who was ready to perish came on me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me. My justice was as a robe and a diadem. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy. The cause of him who I did not know, I searched out. ¹⁷ I broke the jaws of the unrighteous, and plucked the prey out of his teeth. ¹⁸ Then I said, 'I shall die in my own house, I shall number my days as the sand. ¹⁹ My root is spread out to the waters. The dew lies all night on my branch. ²⁰ My glory is fresh in me. My bow is renewed in my hand.' ²¹ "Men listened to me, waited, and kept silence for my counsel. ²² After my words they did not speak again. My speech fell on them. ²³ They waited for me as for the rain. Their mouths drank as with the spring rain. ²⁴ I smiled on them when they had no confidence. They did not reject the light of my face. ²⁵ I chose out their way, and sat as chief. I lived as a king in the army, as one who comforts the mourners.

⁶ I am weary with my groaning. Every night I drench my bed; I melt my couch with my tears. ⁷ My eye wastes away because of grief. It grows old because of all my adversaries.

¹¹ My son, do not despise the discipline of the LORD, nor resent his correction. ¹² For whom the LORD loves he disciplines, and punishes every son he accepts.

⁴ The LORD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary: he wakens morning by morning, he wakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.

¹³ Therefore I also have struck you with a grievous wound. I have made you desolate because of your sins.
