¹⁷ The city shall be devoted, even it and all that is in it, to the LORD. For they had made a great oath concerning anyone who did not come up to the LORD to Mizpah, saying, "He shall surely be put to death."

²⁷ But Jonathan did not hear when his father commanded the people with the oath, so he put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and dipped it in the honeycomb, and raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened. ²⁸ Then one of the people answered, and said, "Your father directly commanded the people with an oath, saying, 'Cursed is the man who eats food this day.'" The people were faint. ²⁹ Then Jonathan said, "My father has troubled the land. Please look how my eyes have been enlightened, because I tasted a little of this honey. ³⁰ How much better if the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their enemies when they found it, for the slaughter among the Philistines would have been greater."

⁴⁷ even the God who executes vengeance for me, and subdues peoples under me.

⁹ With his mouth the godless man destroys his neighbor, but the righteous will be delivered through knowledge.

² For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
