¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, "He traps the wise in their craftiness."

¹⁰ Come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it happen that when any war breaks out, they also join themselves to our enemies, and fight against us, and escape out of the land."

¹¹ Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods because of the thing in which they dealt arrogantly against them."

³¹ And it had been told to David, saying, "Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom." David said, "LORD, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness."

²³ The counsel of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if a man inquired at the oracle of God: so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

¹⁴ Absalom and all the men of Israel said, "The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel." For the LORD had ordained to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil on Absalom.

²³ When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not followed, he saddled his donkey, and arose, and went home, to his city, and set his house in order, and hanged himself; and he died, and was buried in the tomb of his father.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

¹³ He traps the wise in their own craftiness, and the counsel of the cunning are brought to a quick end.

¹⁴ Look, he travails with iniquity. Yes, he has conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood. ¹⁵ He has dug a hole, and has fallen into the pit which he made.

¹⁵ The nations have fallen into the pit they had made. In the net which they hid, their feet are caught. ¹⁶ The LORD has made himself known. He has executed judgment. The wicked is snared by the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah.

¹⁰ Let the wicked fall together into their own nets, while I pass by.

¹¹ The princes of Zoan are utterly foolish. The counsel of the wisest counselors of Pharaoh has become stupid. How do you say to Pharaoh, "I am the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings?" ¹² Where then are your sages? And let them tell you now; and let them know what the LORD of hosts has purposed concerning Egypt. ¹³ The princes of Zoan have become fools. The princes of Memphis are deceived. They have caused Egypt to go astray, who are the cornerstone of her tribes. ¹⁴ The LORD has mixed a spirit of perverseness in the midst of her; and they have caused Egypt to go astray in all of its works, like a drunken man staggers in his vomit.

¹⁴ Therefore, look, I will again do a marvelous work among this people, even a marvelous work and a wonder; and I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will nullify." ¹⁵ Woe to those who deeply hide their counsel from the LORD, and whose works are in the dark, and who say, "Who sees us?" and "Who knows us?" ¹⁶ You turn things upside down. Should the potter be thought to be like clay; that the thing made should say about him who made it, "He did not make me;" or the thing formed say of him who formed it, "He has no understanding?"

²⁵ who foils the omens of the empty talkers, and makes fools of diviners; who turns sages back, and makes their knowledge foolish;

²¹ Because, although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or give him thanks, but their thinking became nonsense, and their foolish heart was darkened. ²² Claiming to be wise, they became fools,

¹⁹ For it is written, "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will nullify." ²⁰ Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Hasn't God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

⁶ We speak wisdom, however, among those who are mature, but a wisdom not of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are passing away.
