¹ So when he saw the crowds, he went up the hill and sat down; his disciples came up to him

¹⁸ As he was walking along the sea of Galilee he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew, casting a net in the sea — for they were fishermen; ¹⁹ so he said to them, "Come, follow me, and I will make you fish for men." ²⁰ And they dropped their nets at once and followed him. ²¹ Then going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedaeus and his brother John, mending their nets in the boat beside their father Zebedaeus. He called them, ²² and they left the boat and their father at once, and went after him.

²⁵ And he was followed by great crowds from Galilee and Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judaea and from across the Jordan.

² These are the names of the twelve apostles: first Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, James the son of Zebedaeus and John his brother, ³ Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the taxgatherer, James the son of Alphaeus and Lebbaeus whose surname is Thaddaeus, ⁴ Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot who betrayed him.

² but, as great crowds gathered to him, he entered a boat and sat down, while all the crowd stood on the beach.

²⁹ Then Jesus removed from that country and went along the sea of Galilee; he went up the hillside and sat there.

¹³ Then he went up the hillside and summoned the men he wanted, and they went to him.

²⁰ but the crowd gathered again, so that it was impossible even to have a meal.

¹ Once more he proceeded to teach by the seaside, and a crowd gathered round him greater than ever, so he entered a boat on the sea and sat down, while all the crowd stayed on shore.

¹³ and when day broke he summoned his disciples, choosing twelve of them, to whom he gave the name of 'apostles': ¹⁴ Simon (to whom he gave the name of Peter), Andrew his brother, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, ¹⁵ Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, Simon (who was called 'the Zealot'), ¹⁶ Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot (who turned traitor).
