² Then Iosua sent men from Iericho to Ai which is besyde Bethauen, on the eastsyde of Bethel, and spake vnto them, sayinge: gette you vp and vewe the countreye. And the men went vp and spyed oute Ai.

⁸ Then departed he thence vnto a mountayne that lyeth on the east syde of Bethell & pitched hys tente: Bethel beynge on the west syde, and Ay on the east: and he builded there an aulter vnto the Lord, & called on the name of the Lorde.

¹⁹ And he called the name of the place Bethell, for in dede the name of the city was called Lus

¹ Then Iosua the sonne of Nun sent out of Settim two spyes secretly saying: go & vewe the land & also Iericho. And they went, & came into a harlottes house named Rahab, and lodged there.

⁹ The Kynge of Iericho: The Kynge of Ai besyde Bethel,

¹² And their north coastes were from Iordan, & wente vp to the syde of Iericho on the northsyde, and went vp thorowe the mountaines westwarde, and they ended at the wyldernesse of Bethauen,

⁵ Then the Philistines gathered them selues together to fyghte wyth Israel, thyrtie thousand charettes and sixe thousande horse men with the other people lyke the sande by the sea side is in multitude and came vp & pytched in Machmas eastward from Bethauen.

²³ And so God holp Israel that daye. And the battell contynued vntyll they came to Bethauen.

³¹ The children of Beniamin of Gaba, dwelt at Machmas, Aia, Bethel and in theyr vyllages.

¹⁸ Thorow counsayl the thynges that men deuise go forward: and with discrecion ought warres to be taken in hande.

⁶ For wt discrecion must warres be taken in hand, & wher as are many thou can geue councell, there is the victorye.

¹⁵ Though thou Israel art disposed to play the harlot, yet shouldest not thou haue offended, O Iuda: thou shouldest not haue runne to Galgala, nor haue gone vp to Bethauen, nor haue sworne, the Lord lyueth.

¹⁶ Beholde I sende you forth as shepe among wolues. Be ye therfore wyse as serpentes, and innocent as doues.

¹⁵ Take hede therfore that ye walke circumspectlye: not as foles, but as wyse
