¹ Come out of Ierusalem, ye strong children of Ben Iamin: blowe vp the trompettes ye Tecuytes, set vp a token vnto Bethcarem, for a plage and a greate myserye pepeth oute from the Northe. ² I wyll licken the doughter Syon to a fayr and tendre woman, and to her shall come the shepeherdes with theyr flockes. ³ Theyr tentes shall they pytch rounde aboute her, and euery one shall fede them that are vnder his hand. ⁴ Make battell agaynst her (shall they say) Aryse, let vs go vp, whyle it is yet daye. Alas, the daye goeth awaye, & the nyghte shadowes fal doune: ⁵ Aryse, let vs go vp by nyght, and destroye her stronge holdes, ⁶ for thus hath the Lorde of hostes commaunded. Hewe doune her trees, and set vp bulworkes agaynste Ierusalem. Thys is the cytye that must be punyshed, for in her is all malyciousnes. ⁷ Lyke as a conduyte aboundeth in water, euen so thys cytye aboundeth in wyckednes. Robberye and vnrightuousnesse is heard in her, sorow and woundes are euer there in my sight. ⁸ Amende the (O Ierusalem) leste I withdrawe my herte from the, and make the desolate: & thy lande also, that no man dwell in it. ⁹ For thus sayeth the Lorde of hoostes: The resydue of Israell shalbe gathered, as the remnaunt of grapes. And therfore turne thyne hande agayne into the basket, like the grape gatherer. ¹⁰ But vnto whome shall I speake, whome shall I warne that he maye take hede? Theyr eares are so vncircumcyced, that they maye not heare. Beholde, they take the worde of God but for a scorne, & haue no luste therto. ¹¹ And therfore I am so ful of thyne indignacyon (O Lorde) that I maye suffre no longer. Shede oute thy wrath vpon the children that are withoute, and vpon all younge men. Yea the man must be taken presoner with the wife, and the aged with the crepel. ¹² Theyr houses with their landes and wyues shall be turned vnto straungers, when I stretche oute myne hande vpon the inhabitours of this land, sayeth the Lord. ¹³ For from the leaste vnto the moost, they hang all vpon couetousnes: & from the Prophet vnto the prieste, they go all aboute wyth falshed and lyes. ¹⁴ And besyde that, they heale the hurte of my people with swete wordes, sayinge: peace peace, when there is no peace at all. ¹⁵ Therfore they must be ashamed, for they haue committed abhomynacyon. But howe shulde they be ashamed, when they knowe nothinge, neither of shame nor good nurtoure? And therfore they shall fall amonge the slayne, and in the houre when I shall vyset them, they shall be brought doune, sayeth the Lorde. ¹⁶ Thus sayth the Lorde: go into the streates considre and make inquisicion for the old way and yf it be the good and right waye, then go therein, that ye maye fynde rest for your soules. But they saye: we wyll not walcke therin ¹⁷ and I wil set watchemen ouer you, & therfore take hede vnto the voyce of the trompet. But they saye: we wyll not take hede. ¹⁸ Heare therfore ye Gentyles, and thou congregacion shalt knowe, what I haue deuised for them. ¹⁹ Heare thou earth also: beholde, I wyll cause a plage come vpon this people, euen the frute of theyr owne ymagynacions. For they haue not bene obedyente vnto my wordes and to my lawe, but abhorred them. ²⁰ Wherfore brynge ye me incense from Saba, & swete smellinge Calamus from farre countrees? Youre burntofferynges displease me, & I reioyse not in youre sacrifices. ²¹ And therfore thus sayth the Lorde: beholde I will make this people fall, & there shall fall from amonge them the father with the chyldren, one neyghboure shall peryshe with another. ²² Moreouer thus sayeth the Lorde: Behold, there shall come a people from the North, and a greate people shall aryse from the endes of the earthe, ²³ with bowes & with dartes shall they be weapened: It is a roughe & fearce people, an vnmercyfull people: theyr voyce roareth lyke the sea, they ryde vpon horses wel appoynted to the battel agaynst the, O doughter Sion. ²⁴ Then shall thys crye be heard: Our armes are feble, heuynes & sorowe is come vpon vs, as vpon a woman trauaylynge with chylde. ²⁵ No man go forth into the felde, no man come vpon the hye strete: for the swerde and feare of the enemye shalbe on euerye syde. ²⁶ Wherfore, gyrde a sack clothe aboute the (O doughter of my people) sprinkle thy selfe wyth ashes, mourne and wepe bytterlye, as vpon thy onely beloued sonne: For the destroyer shall sodenly fall vpon vs. ²⁷ The haue I set for a prouer of my harde people, to seke oute, and to trye theyr wayes. ²⁸ For they are al vnfaythfull and fallen awaye, they hange vpon fylthy lucre, they are cleane brasse & yron for they hurte and destroye euerye man. ²⁹ The bellous are brent in the fyre, the lead is consumed, the melter melteth in vayne, for the euyll is not taken awaye from them. ³⁰ Therfore shal they be called naughtye syluer, because the Lorde hath caste them oute.

¹² And Moyses spake before the Lorde saying: behold, the chyldren of Israell herken not vnto me, howe then shall Pharao heare me: seynge that I haue vncircumcised lippes.

²³ take principall spices: of pure myrre fyue hundred sycles, of swete cynamon halfe so much two hundred and fiftye sycles:

³⁴ But go & bryng the people vnto the land which I sayd vnto the: behold, myne angel shall go before the. Neuerthelater in the daye when I vyset. I wyll vyset their synne vpon them.

³⁴ Then the Lande shall reioyce in hyr Sabbothes, as longe as it lyeth voyde and ye in youre enemyes lande: euen then shal the Lande kepe holy day and reioyce in hir Sabbothes.

²⁶ I cal heauen and earth to recorde vnto you thys day, that ye shal shortely perishe from of the lande whither ye go ouer Iordan to possesse it: ye shal not prolong your daies therin but shal shortly be destroyed.

¹⁹ When thou hast besyeged a citie long time in making warre against it to take it, destroy not the trees therof, that thou woldest thrust an axe vnto them. For thou mayst eate of them, & therfore destroy them not. For the trees of the feldes are no men, that they might come against the to besyege the. ²⁰ Neuerthelater those trees which thou knowest that men eate not of them thou mayst destroye & cutte them doune and make bulwerkes agaynst the citie that maketh warre with the, vntyl it be ouerthrowne.

³⁰ thou shalt be betrawthed vnto a wyfe, and another shal lye with her. Thou shalt buylde and house & another shal dwell therin. Thou shalt plante a vyneard, & shalt not make it comen. ³¹ Thyne oxe shalbe slayne before thyne eyes, and thou shalt not eate therof. Thyne asse shalbe vyolentlye taken awaye euen bofore thy face, and shall not be restored the agayne. Thy shepe shalbe geuen vnto thyne enemyes, and no man shall helpe the. ³² Thy sonnes and thy daughters shall be geuen vnto another nacion, and thyne eyes shall se and dase vpon them all daye longe, but shalt haue no myght in thyne hande. ³³ The frute of thy lande and all thy laboures shall a nacion which thou knowest not, eate, and thou shalt but suffre vyolence only & be oppressed alwaye:

³⁹ Thou shalt plante a veynearde & dresse it, but shalt nether drynke of the wyne neither gather of the grapes, for the wormes shall eate it. ⁴⁰ Thou shalt haue olyuetrees in al thy coastes, but shalt not be anoynted with the oyle, for thyne olyue trees shalbe roted out. ⁴¹ Thou shalt get sonnes and daughters, but shalt not haue them: for they shalbe caryed awaye captiue. ⁴² All thy trees and frute of thy lande shalbe marred with blastynge. ⁴³ The straungers that are a monge you shall clyme aboue the vp on hye, and thou shalt come doune beneth alowe.

⁴ & yet the Lord hath not geuen you an herte to perceyue, nor eyes to se, nor eares to heere vnto thys daye.

²⁴ And then shal al nacions also say: wherfore hath the Lorde done of this facion vnto this lande? O how fearse is this great wrath? ²⁵ And men shal saye: because they lefte the testament of the Lorde God of their fathers which he made with them, when he brought them out of the land of Egypt. ²⁶ And they went & serued straunge goddes & worshipped them: goddes which they knew not and which had geuen them nought. ²⁷ And therfore the wrath of the Lorde waxed whote vpon that lande to bryng vpon it all the curses that are written in this boke. ²⁸ And the Lorde cast them out of their lande in angre, wrath and greate furyousnesse, and cast them in to a straunge land, as it is come to passe this day.

¹⁹ I cal to recorde thys daye vnto you, heauen and earth, that I haue set before you life and death, blessynge & cursinge: but chose lyfe, that thou, and thy sede may liue,

¹ Heare O heauen, what I shal speake, and heare O earth, the wordes of my mouth.

⁷ Remembre the dayes that are past: consider the yeres from tyme to tyme. Aske thy father, and he wyl shewe the, thy elders and they wyl tel the.

²⁹ I would they were wyse and vnderstode thys & woulde consider their later ende.

⁶³ But the Iebusites that were the enhabiters of Ierusalem: the chyldren of Iuda could not caste oute. Wherfore the Iebusites dwelle among the children of Iuda vnto this daye.

²¹ And these are the cytyes of the trybes of the chyldren of Beniamin in theyr kynredes: Iericho, Bethhaglah, and the valeye of Kaziz, ²² Betharabah, Zamarim, and Bethel, ²³ Auim, Pharah, and Ophrag, ²⁴ Chepar Ammonai, Ophni, and Gabai, twelue cytyes wt their villages, ²⁵ Gabaon, Ramah, & Beroth, ²⁶ Mazphah, Caphairah, and Mozah: ²⁷ Rekem, Iarephel and Tharelah, ²⁸ Zela, Eleph, and the cytye of the Iebusites, whyche is Ierusalem, Gabaath, and Kariath, fourtene cytyes wyth theyr vyllages. Thys is the enherytaunce of the chyldren of Beniamin in their kynredes.

²¹ And the chyldren of Ben Iamin dyd not caste oute the Iebusites that enhabyted Ierusalem, but the Iebusites dwell wyth the chyldren of Ben Iamin in Ierusalem, vnto thys daye.

⁶ In the dayes of Samgar the sonne of Anath and in the dayes of Iael, the hye wayes were vnoccupyed. And they that walked by pathes, went by wayes that fet compases aboute. ⁷ The vyllages were vnenhabyted in Israell, were vnenhabyted, vntyl I Debora arose vntyll I arose a mother in Israell.

²³ For rebellyousnesse is as the synne of witchcrafte, & stoburnesse is wyckednesse and Idolatrye. Because therfore thou hast cast awaye the worde of the Lorde, therfore hath the Lorde caste awaye the also, from beynge Kynge.

²⁶ Then sayd Samuel vnto Saul: I wyll not returne wyth the: for thou hast cast awaye the byddyng of God, & therfore the Lorde hath cast awaye the also, that thou shalt not be Kyng ouer Israel.

¹⁰ And she gaue the kynge an hundred and .xx. talentes of gould, and of swete odours excedinge moche, & precyouse stones There came neuer after such aboundaunce of swete odours as the quene of Saba gaue to kyng Salomon.

² And the Lorde sent vpon hym men of warre oute of Caldey, out of Siria, oute of the Moabites, & from the children of Ammon: and sent them into Iuda, to destroye it, accordyng to the sayinge of the Lorde whiche he spake by hys seruauntes the Prophetes.

¹⁰ In hys tyme came the seruauntes of Nabuchodonozor kynge of Babylon, to Ierusalem, and the cytye was beseged. ¹¹ And Nabuchodonozor came to the cytie as his seruauntes were yet a besegynge of it. ¹² And Iehoacin the kynge of Iuda came oute to the kinge of Babilon, with his mother, his seruaunte, hys Lordes, and hys chambrelaynes. And the king of Babilon toke him, in the eyght yeare of his raygne.

¹ Wherfore in the nynth yeare of hys raygne, the tenthe daye of the tenthe monethe, came Nabuchodonozor Kynge of Babilon wyth all his power to Ierusalem: and pytched agaynst the towne and made engynes agaynst it on euery syde. ² And the cyty continued beseged vnto the .xi. yeare of kynge Zedekiah. ³ And the nynthe daye of the fourthe monethe of that yeare, there was so great hongre in the cytye, that there was no sustinaunce for the people of the lande. ⁴ And therto the cytye was broken vp: wherfore al the men of Armes fled by nyght, by a waye thorowe a Gate, betwene two walles harde on the Kynges garden: the Caldeyes lyenge aboute the cytie. And the kynge went strayght towarde the deserte.

¹⁶ And Dauid lyfte vp hys eyes & saw the Aungel of the Lorde stand betwene the earth and heauen with a drawen swerde in his hande stretched oute towarde Ierusalem. Then fel Dauid & the elders of Israel clothed in sacke vpon their faces.

⁶ as Bethlehem, Etam & Thekua:

⁵ And in those daies there shalbe no peace to them that go out & in. But greate vexacyon vpon the enhabiters of all landes.

¹⁵ And the Lord God of theyr fathers sent to them by his messengers, sendynge them be tymes: for he had compassyon on hys people & on his dwellynge place. ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God & despised theyr wordes & mysse vsed his prophetes, vntyll the wrath of the Lord so arose agaynst hys people that it was past remeadie. ¹⁷ And so he brought vpon them the kyng of Caldeye & slue theyr young men with the swerde in theyr holy temple, & nether spared younge man nor mayden, nether olde man, nether so moche as hym that stowped for age: But gaue all into his hande.

¹⁹ And they burnt the house of God and brake downe the walles of Ierusalem, and burnt all the palaces therof with fyre with all the goodly stoffe therof, and marred it.

¹⁴ But the donge port buylded Melchiah the sonne of Rechab, the ruler of the fourthe parte of the vyneyardes: he buylded it, & set on the dores, lockes and barres therof.

¹¹ Fearfulnesse shall make hym afrayed on euery syde, that he shall not knowe, where to get out.

¹⁸ For I am full of wordes, and the spryte that is wtin me, compelleth me. ¹⁹ Beholde, I am as the newe wyne, whiche hath no vente, and bursteth the newe vessels in sunder.

² But deliteth in the lawe of the Lord, and exercyseth hym self in hys lawe, bothe daye and nyght.

¹⁰ Be wyse nowe therfore, O ye Kinges, be warned, ye that are iudges of the earthe.

¹³ For I haue harde the blasphemy of the multytude: euerye man abhorreth me: they haue gathered a councell together agaynste me, and are purposed to take awaye my lyfe.

⁶ Sacryfyce and offerynge thou wouldeste not haue but a bodye haste thou ordeyned me: burnt offerynges and sacrifyce for synne thou hast not alowed.

⁸ that I shoulde fulfyl thy wyl O my God, and that am I content to do: yea thy lawe is wythin my hert.

³ God is well knowen in her palaces, that he is the defence of the same.

⁶ Feare came there vpon them, and sorow as vpon a woman in her trauayle.

⁴ He shall call the heauens from aboue, and the earth, that he may iudge his people. ⁵ Gather my saynctes together vnto me, those that set more by the couenant then by any offering. ⁶ And the heauens shal declare his rightuousnes, for God is iudge him selfe. Selah ⁷ Heare, O my people: let me speake, let me testify among you, O Israell: I am God, euen thy God. ⁸ I reproue the not because of thy sacryfice thy burnteofferynges are allwaye before me. ⁹ I wil take no bullockes out of thy house, nor gotes out of thy foldes. ¹⁰ For all the beastes of the felde are myne, and thousandes of cattell vppon the hylles. ¹¹ I know al the foules vpon the mountaynes, and the wylde beastes of the felde are in my sight. ¹² If I be hongry, I wyll not tell the: for the whole worlde is myne, & all that therein is. ¹³ Thynkest thou, that I will eate the fleshe of oxen, or drynke the bloude of goates?

¹⁶ But vnto the vngodly sayeth God? Why doest thou preach my lawes, and takest my couenaunt in thy mouth? ¹⁷ Where as thou hatest to be refourmed, and castest my woordes behynde the?

³ Saye vnto God: O howe wonderful are thy worckes? thorowe the greatenesse of thy power shall thine enemyes be confounded.

¹² Blessed is the man, whome thou learnest (O LORDE) and teacheste hym in thy lawe.

¹⁶ My delite shalbe in thy statutes, I wyll not forget thy wordes.

²⁴ In thy testomonyes is my delite, they are my councelers.

³⁵ Leade me in the pathe of thy commaundmentes, for that is my desyre,

⁷⁰ Their herte is as fat as brawne, but my delyte is in thy law.

⁷⁷ O let thy louyng mercies come vnto me, that I may lyue, for thy law is my delite.

¹¹⁹ Thou puttest awaye all the vngodly of the earth lyke drosse, therfore I loue thy testymonies,

¹⁷⁴ I longe for thy sauyng health, O Lorde, and in thy law is my delyte.

²⁴ Seing then that I haue called & ye refused it: I haue stretched out my hand, & no man regarded it, ²⁵ but all my counsayls haue ye despysed, & set my corrections at naught. ²⁶ Therfore shall I also laugh in your destruccion, & mocke you, when the thyng that ye feare cometh vpon you: ²⁷ euen when the thing that ye be afrayed of, falleth in sodenly lyke a storme, & your miseri like a tempest: yea, when trouble & heuinesse commeth vpon you.

⁴ Take the drosse from the syluer, and ther shalbe a cleane vessel therof.

⁹ He that turneth away his eare from hearing the lawe, his prayer shalbe abhorred.

¹ He that is styfnecked and wyll not be refourmed, shal sodenly be destroied without any helpe

⁷ Tell me (O thou whom my soule loueth) where thou fedest, where thou restest at the noone daye: lest I go wrong, and come vnto the flockes of thy companyons. ⁸ If thou knowe not thy selfe (O thou fayrest among women) then go thy waye forthe after the fotesteppes of the shepe, as though thou woldest fede thy goates beside the shepeherdes tentes.

¹⁷ vntill the day breake, and till the shadowes be gone. Come agayn preuely (O my beloued) lyke as a Roo or a yong hart vnto the mountaynes.

⁴ Alas for thys synfull people, whiche are ouerladen with blasphemyes, a frowarde generacyon, wicked chyldren. They haue forsaken the Lorde, they haue prouoked the holy one of Israell vnto anger, and are gone backwarde. ⁵ Wherfore shulde ye be plaged any more? For ye are euer fallyng away. The whole head is sick, & the herte is very heauy. ⁶ From the sole of the fote vnto the head, there is no whol parte in all youre bodye: but all are woundes, botches, sores, and stripes, whiche can nether be helped, bound vp, molifyed, nor eased with any oyntment.

⁸ Moreouer the doughter of Syon is lefte alone lyke a cotage in a vyneyard like a watche house in tyme of warre, lyke a beseged cytye.

¹¹ Why offre ye so manye sacrifyces vnto me? I am discontent for the brentofferinges of wethers and with the fatnesse of fedbeastes. I haue no pleasure in the bloude of bullockes, lambes & gootes.

²⁰ But yf ye be obstynate and rebellyous, ye shalbe deuoured wt the swerde: for thus the Lorde hath promysed wyth hys owne mouthe.

²⁵ And therfore shall I laye my hande vpon the and burne oute thy drosse from the fyneste and pureste, and put oute all the leade,

⁵ It is to the that I crye (O house of Iacob) vp, let vs walck in the lyghte of the Lorde,

⁹ The chaungynge of their countenaunce bewrayeth them, yea they declare theyr owne synnes them selues, as the Sodomites, and hyde them not. Wo be vnto theyr soules, for they shalbe heuely rewarded.

¹⁶ Moreouer thus sayth the Lorde: Seynge the doughters of Sion are become so proude, and come in with stretched oute neckes, and with vayne wanton eyes: seynge they come in tryppynge so nycely with their fete: ¹⁷ Therfore shall the Lorde shaue the heades of the doughters of Syon, and make theyr bewtye bare in that daye.

³ I shewe you nowe my cause (O ye Cytesens of Ierusalem & whole Iuda:) Iudge I praye you betwixte me, & my vyneyarde.

²⁵ Therfore is the wrath of the Lorde kyndeled also agaynst his people, and he shaketh hys hande at them: yea he shall smyte so, that the hylles shall tremble. And theyr karcases shall lye in the open stretes, lyke myre. After all thys, the wrathe of God shall not ceasse, but he shall stretche hys hande wyder. ²⁶ And he shall geue a token vnto a straunge people and call vnto them in a farre countrey: and beholde, they shall come hastelye wyth spede. ²⁷ There is not one faynte nor feble amonge them, no not a slogyshe nor sleperye personne. There shall not one of them put of the gyrdle from hys loynes, nor louse their lachet of his shue. ²⁸ Theyr arowes are sharpe, and theyr bowes bent. Their horse hoofes are lyke flynt, & theyr cartwheles lyke a stormy wynde. ²⁹ Theyr crye is as it were of a lyon, and the roarynge of them lyke lyons whelpes. They shal roare and hantch vp the praye, and no man shal recouer it, or get it from them. ³⁰ In that day they shalbe so fearce vpon them, as the sea. And yf we loke vnto the lande, beholde, it shalbe all darckenesse and sorowe. If we loke to heauen: beholde, it shalbe darcke wyth careful desperacyon.

⁹ And so he sayde: go, and tell thys people: ye shall heare in dede, but ye shall not vnderstande, ye shall playnelye se, & not perceyue. ¹⁰ Harden the hart of thys people, stoppe theyr eares, and shutte theyr eyes, that they se not with theyr eyes, heare not wyth theyr eares, and vnderstande not wyth theyr hertes, and conuerte and be healed.

¹⁴ For he is the sanctifyeng, and stone to stomble at the rocke to fall vpon, a snare and net to both the houses, to Israell, and the inhabitours of Ierusalem.

²⁰ Yf any man want lyght, let hym loke vpon the lawe and the testimony, whether they speake not after thys meaninge.

¹² that the Sirians shall laye holde vpon them before, & the Philistines behinde, and so deuoure Israell wyth open mouth. After all thys, the wrath of the Lord shall not ceasse, but yet his hande shall be stretched oute styll.

¹⁴ Therfore the Lorde shal rote oute of Israel bothe head & tayle, braunch and twigge in one daye. ¹⁵ By the heade, is vnderstande the Senatoure and honorable man, and by the tayle, the Prophet that preacheth lyes. ¹⁶ For al they whiche enfourme the people that they be in a righte case, suche be disceyuers. ³ For of the chyldren that are borne in thys place, of their mother that haue borne them, and of their fathers that haue begotten them in thys lande, thus sayeth the Lorde: ⁴ They shal dye an horrible deeth, no man shall mourne for them, ner burye them, but they shall lye as donge vpon the earth. They shall perishe thorow the swearde and honger, and their bodyes shall be meate for the foules of the ayre, & beastes of the earth. ⁵ Agayne, thus sayeth the Lorde: Go not vnto them, that come together, for to mourne and wepe: for I haue taken my peace from this people (saieth the Lorde) yee my fauoure & my mercy. ⁶ And in this lande shall they dye, olde and yonge, and shall not be buryed: no man shall bewepe them, no man shall clyppe or shaue hym selfe for them. ⁷ There shal not one viset another, to mourne with them for their deed, or to comforte them. One shall not offre another the cuppe of consolacyon, to forget their heuynes for father & mother. ⁸ Thou shalt not go in to their feaste house, to syt downe, moche lesse to eate or drincke with them. ⁹ For thus sayeth the Lorde of Hostes the God of Israell: Beholde, I shall take awaye out of this place, the voyce of myrth and gladnesse, the voyce of the brydegrome and of the bryde: yee & that in youre dayes, that ye maye se it.

¹⁶ Beholde (sayeth the Lorde) I wyll sende out many fyshers to take them, & after that wyll I sende out manye hunters to hunte them out, from all mountaynes and hylles & out of the caues of stones.

²³ How be it they obeyed me not, nether herkened they vnto me: but were obstynate & stubburne, & nether obeyed me, nor receyued my correccyon.

I wyll make of them a wyldernesse, a mockage and a continuall deserte.

Iewes presoners. The whole summe of all the presoners, is foure thousand and syxe hundreth.

¹⁰ Iod. The wemen (which of nature are pitieful) haue sodden their owne children with their handes that they might be their meate, in the miserable destruccion of the daughter of my people.

¹³ Mem. Whiche neuertheles is come to passe for the synnes of her prophetes, and for the wyckednes of her Prestes that haue shed innocentes bloude with in her.

²⁰ Now yf a ryghtuous man go from his rightuousnesse, and do the thynge that is euell: I will laye a stomblynge blocke before hym, & he shall dye, because thou hast not geuen him warning: yee dye shall he in hys owne synne so that the vertue, which he dyd before, shall not be thought vpon: but hys bloude wyll I requyre of thyne hande. ²¹ Neuerthelesse, yf thou exhortest the ryghtuous, that he synne not, & so the ryghtuous do not synne: then shall he lyue, because he hath receyued thy warnynge, and thou hast dyscharged thy soule.

⁴ I wyll geue you no answere. Wilt thou not reproue them (thou sonne of man) wilt thou not reproue them? Shew them the abhomynacions of their forefathers,

³⁹ Go now then (sayeth the Lorde God) ye house of Israel, cast awaye, and destroye euery man his Idoles: then shall ye heare me, & no more blaspheme my holie name with your offeringes and Idoles.

The Sunne shall go downe ouer those prophetes, and the daye shalbe darcke vnto them.

Or shal I geue my fyrstborne for myne offences, and the fruyte of my body for the synne of my soule? ⁸ I wyll shewe the, O man, what is good, & what the Lorde requyreth of the: Namely, to do right, to haue pleasure in louynge kyndnesse, to be lowlye, and to walcke wyth thy God:

Theyr horsmen come by greate heapes from farre, they fle hastely to deuour as the Aegle. ⁹ They come all to spoyle: oute of them commeth an easte wynde, whiche bloweth and gathereth theyr captyues, lyke as the sande. ¹⁰ They shall mocke the kynges, and laughe the princes to scorne. They shal not set by any stronge holde, for they shall laye ordynaunce agaynst it, and take it.

¹ I stode vpon my watch, & set me vpon my bulworke, to loke & se, what he wolde saye vnto me, & what answere I shuld geue him that reproueth me.

³ Her rulers within her are as roaryng lyons: her iudges are as wolues in the euenynge, which leaue nothynge behynde them tyll the morowe. ⁴ Her prophetes are lyght persones & vnfaythfull men: her priestes vnhalowe the Sanctuarye, and do wrong vnder the pretence of the lawe. ⁵ But the iuste Lorde that doth no vnryghte, was amonge them, euery morning shewynge them hys lawe clearlye, and ceased not. But the vngodlye wyll not learne to be ashamed.

⁷ I sayde vnto them: O feare me, and be contente to be refourmed. That theyr dwellynge shulde not be destroyed, and that there shulde happen vnto them none of these thynges, wherewyth I shall vyset them. But neuertheles they stande vp earlye, to folowe the fylthynes of theyr owne ymagynacions.

A certayne man had two sonnes, and came to the elder and sayde: sonne go and worke to daye in my vyneyarde. ²⁹ He answered and sayde, I wyll not: but after warde repented and wente. ³⁰ Then came he to the seconde, and sayed lykewyse. And he answered and sayed: I wyll syr: yet wente not. ³¹ Whether of them twayne dyd the wyll of the father? And they sayde vnto hym: the fyrst. Iesus sayde vnto them: verelye I saye vnto you, that the Publycans and the harlotes shall come into the kyngedome of God before you. ³² For Iohn came vnto you in the waye of ryghtuousnes, and ye beleued hym not. But the Publicans and the harlotes beleued hym. And yet ye (thoughe ye sawe it) were not yet moued wyth repentaunce, that ye myght afterwarde haue beleued hym.

¹² When he came nye to the gate of the cytye, beholde there was a dead man caryed out which was the onlye sonne of his mother and she was a wydowe, and much people of the cytye was with her.

⁴⁵ Then aunswered one of the lawyers, and sayed vnto hym: Mayster, thus saiyng, thou puttest vs to rebuke also.

¹⁴ All these thynges hearde the phariseis also which were couetous, and they mocked hym.

²⁹ Abraham said vnto hym: they haue Moyses and the Prophetes: let them heare them.

³⁴ I tel you: In that nyght there shalbe two in one bed, the one shalbe receyued, & the other shal be forsaken.

⁴³ For the dayes shall come vpon the, that thyne enemyes shal cast a banke aboute the, & compasse the round and kepe the on euerye syde,

¹⁹ And the hye priestes and the scrybes the same houre wente aboute to laye handes on him, but they feared the people. For they perceiued that he had spoken thys similitude against them.

²⁵ And ther shalbe signes in the sunne, and in the mone, and in the starres: & in the earth, the people shalbe in such perplexitye, that they shall not tel which waye to turne them selues. The sea and the waters shall roore, ²⁶ and mens hertes shall fayle them for feare, & for lokinge after those thinges whiche shall come on the earth. For the powers of heauen shal moue.

¹⁹ And this is the condempnacion, that light is come into the worlde, and the men loued darknes more then lyght, because their dedes were euyll. ²⁰ For euerye man that euyll doth, hateth the light: nether commeth to the lyghte: lest his dedes shoulde be reproued. ²¹ But he that doeth truth commeth to the light that hys dedes myght be knowen, how that they are wrought in God.

³⁹ Searche the sciptures, for in them ye thinke ye haue eternall lyfe: and they are they which testifye of me.

⁴⁶ For had ye beleued Moises ye would haue beleued me for, he wrote of me. ⁴⁷ But seynge ye beleue not hys writting: how should ye beleue my wordes?

⁷ The worlde can not hate you. But me it hateth: because I testifye of it, that the workes of it are euyll.

⁴⁰ And some of the Pharises whiche were with him, hearde these wordes, and sayde vnto hym: are we then blynde?

³⁵ Then Iesus sayed vnto them: yet a lyttell whyle is the lyght with you. Walke, whyle ye haue lyght, lest the darcknes come on you. He that walketh in the darcke, woteth not whether he goeth.

⁴⁸ He that refuseth me, and receiueth not my wordes, hath one that iudgeth hym. The wordes that I haue spoken, they shall iudge hym in the laste day.

¹⁷ Yf ye vnderstande these thynges, happye are ye yf ye do then.

²⁰ For we can not. But speake that whiche we haue sene and heard.

⁵¹ Ye styfe necked, and of vncyrcumcysed hertes and eares, ye haue al wayes resisted the holye ghoste as your fathers dyd, so do ye.

⁶⁰ And he kneled doune and cryed with a loude voice: Lord laye not thys sinne to their charge. And when he had thus spoken: he fel a slepe.

²² Repent therfore of this thy wyckednes, and praye God, that the thought of thyne herte maye be forgeuen the.

¹¹ These were the noblest of byrthe among them of Thessalonia whiche receyued the worde with al diligence of mynde, and searched the scriptures daylye whether those thynges were euen so.

¹⁶ Whyle Paule wayted for them at Athens, hys spirite was moued in hym, to se the cytye geuen to worshyppynge of ymages:

⁵ When Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paule was constrayned by the spirit to testify to the Iewes that Iesus was very Christ.

²⁷ For I haue kept nothynge backe, but haue shewed you all the counsell of God. ²⁸ Take hede therfore vnto youre selues, and to all the flocke wherof the holy ghoste hath made you ouersears, to rule the congregacyon of God, which he hath purchased wt hys bloude. ²⁹ For I am sure of this, that after my departing shall greuous wolues enter in amonge you, which wyll not spare the flocke. ³⁰ Moreouer of your own selues shal men aryse speakyng peruerse thinges to draw disciples after them. ³¹ Therfore awake & remember, that by the space of .iij. yeares I ceased not to warne euerye one of you both night and daye with teares.

¹ What shall we saye then, that Abraham oure father as pertaynyng to the fleshe, dyd fynde? ² Yf Abraham were iustifyed by dedes, then hath he wherein to reioyce but not with god. ³ For what sayth the scripture? Abraham beleued God, and it was counted vnto hym for ryghteousnes. ⁴ To hym that worketh, is the rewarde not reckened of fauoure: but of dutye. ⁵ To hym that worketh not, but beleueth on hym that iustifyeth the vngodly, is hys fayth counted for ryghteousnes. ⁶ Euen as Dauid descrybeth the blessedfulnes of the man vnto whome God ascrybeth ryghteousnes withoute dedes.

¹² and that he myghte be the father of the circumcysed, not because they are circumcysed only: but because they walke also in the steppes of that faythe that was in oure father Abraham before the tyme of circumcysyon.

²² I delite the lawe of God, concernynge the inner man.

³³ As it is wrytten. Beholde I put in Syon a stomblyng stone, and a rocke which shall make men faule. And none that beleue on hym, shalbe a shamed.

¹ I saye then: hath God cast away hys people? God forbyd. For euen I verelye am an Israelite, of the sede of Abraham, and of the trybe of Beniamin,

⁹ And Dauyd sayth: Let theyr table be made a snare to take them wyth all, and an occasyon to fall, and a reward vnto them.

¹⁹ whose ende is dampnation, whose God is theyr belye, and whose glorye is to theyr shame, whiche are worldlye minded.

²⁸ whome we preache, warning all men and teachinge all men in all wisdom, to make all men perfect in Christ Iesu.

⁶ As ye haue therfore receiued Christe Iesus the Lorde, euen so walke,

³ When they shal say peace and no daunger, then commeth on them soden destruccion, as the trauaylynge of a woman wyth chyld, and they shal not escape.

³ not dronken, no fyghter, not geuen to fylthy lucre: but gentle, abhorrynge fyghtyng, abhorrynge couetousnes,

³ For the tyme wyll come, when they wyll not suffer wholsome doctryne: but after theyr owne lustes shall they (whose eares ytch) get them an heape of teachers,

¹² that ye faynt not, but folowe them, whiche thorowe fayth & pacience inheret the promyses.

² By it the elders were wel reported of.

⁷ By faythe Noe honoured God, after that he was warned of thynges whiche were not sene, and prepared the arcke to the sauynge of hys housholde, thorow the whiche arcke, he condemned the worlde, and became heyre of the rightuousnes that commeth by faythe.

¹⁷ Obeye them that haue the ouersyghte of you, and submyt your selues to them, for they watche for youre soules, euen as they that muste geue accomptes: that they maye do it wyth ioye, and not wyth griefe. For that is an vnprofytable thynge for you.

¹⁰ Out of one mouth proceadeth blessynge and curssynge. My brethren these thynges ought not so to be. ¹¹ Doth a fountayne sende forth at one place swete water & bitter also? ¹² Can the fygge tree, my Brethren, beare olyue beryes: other a vyne beare fygges?

⁹ Suffer afflictyons: sorowe ye and wepe. Let youre laughter be turned to mornynge and youre ioye to heauynes.

¹ Go to nowe ye ryche men. Weepe, and howle on your wretchednes that shal come vpon you.

⁷ that youre faythe ones tryed beynge muche more precyous, then golde that perysheth (though it be tryed with fyre) myghte be founde vnto laude, glory, and honoure, at the apearynge of Iesus Christ

⁸ and a stone to stomble at, and a rocke to offende them whiche stomble at the word, and beleue not that whereon they were set.

¹² Dearely beloued, be not troubled in hys heate, whiche nowe is come amonge you to trye you as though some straunge thing had happened vnto you:

¹ There were false prophetes among the people, euen as there shalbe false teachers amonge you, which priuilie shal bringe in damnable sectes, euen denyenge the Lorde that hath bought them and bringe vpon them selues swyft dampnacion,

³ and thorowe couetousnes shal they wyth fayned wordes make marchaundyse of you, whose iudgement is not farre of, and theyr dampnacion slepeth not.

¹⁴ hauinge eyes full of aduoutrye, and that can not cease to synne, begilinge vnstable soules. Hertes they haue exercised with couetousues. They are cursed children, ¹⁵ and haue forsaken the ryght waye, and are gone astray folowing the waye of Balam the sonne of Bosor, whiche loued the rewarde of vnrightuousnes,

¹⁸ For when they haue spoken the swellinge wordes of vanitie, they begyle with wantonnes thorowe the lustes of the fleshe, them that were cleane escaped, but nowe are wrapped in errours. ¹⁹ They promis them libertie, and are them selues the bonde seruauntes of corrupcyon. For of whomsoeuer a man is ouer come, vnto the same is he in bondage.

¹⁸ And the nacyons were angrye, and thy wrath is come, and the tyme of the dead that they shoulde be iudged and that thou shouldeste geue rewarde vnto thy seruauntes the Prophetes and saynctes, and to them that feare thy name small and greate, and shouldeste destroye them, whyche destroye the earth.

¹⁸ And another angel came out from the aulter, whiche had power of fyre, and cryed wyth a loude crye to him that had the sharpe sykle, & sayed: thruste in thy sharpe sykle, and gather the clusters of the earth for her grapes are rip.

¹ And I hearde a great voice out of the temple saying to the .vij. angels: go youre wayes, poure out your vialles of wrath vpon the earth.

² for true and ryghteous are his iudgementes, for he hath iudged that great whore, whiche dyd corrupte the earth with her fornicacion, & hath auenged the bloude of his seruauntes of her hand.
