⁸ And lyke as thou knowest the naughtye fyges, whyche maye not be eaten, they are so euell: Euen so wyll I (sayeth the Lorde) lett Zedekiah the Kynge of Iuda (ye and all hys princes, and the resydue of Ierusalem that remayne ouer in this lande, and them also that dwell in Egypte) to be vexed & plaged in all kyngdomes & landes.

¹⁰ For I haue sett my face agaynst this cytie (sayeth the Lord) to plage it, and to do it no good. It muste be geuen in to the hande of the kynge of Babylon, and be brent with fyre.

² In the one maunde were verye good fyges, euen lyke as those that be fyrst rype. In the other maunde were verye naughtye fyges, which might not be eaten, they were so euell.

⁵ Thus sayeth the Lorde the God of Israell: lyke as thou knowest the good fyges, so shall I knowe the men led awaye, whom I haue sent out of thys place in to the lande of the Caldees, for their profyte:

¹⁶ Thus hath the Lorde spoken (concernyng the kyng that sytteth in the stole of Dauid, and all the people that dwell in thys cytye, youre brethren that are not gone with you into captyuyte) ¹⁷ Thus (I saye) speaketh the Lorde of hoostes: Beholde I wyll sende a swearde, honger and pestilence vpon them, and wyll make them like vntymelye fyges, that maye not be eaten for bytternes. ¹⁸ And I wyll persecute them wyth the swearde, with honger and death. I wyll delyuer them vp to be vexed of all Kyngedomes, to be cursed, abhorred, laughed to scorne, and put to confusyon of all the people, amonge whome I haue scatred them:

²⁸ Therfore thus sayde the Lorde: beholde, I shall delyuer this cytie into the power of the Caldees, and into the power of Nabuchodonozor the kynge of Babilon, they shal take it in. ²⁹ For the Caldees shal come, and wynne this citie, and set fyre vpon it. And burne it, wt the gorgeous houses, in whose parlers they haue made sacrifice vnto Baal, and poured drinckeofferynges vnto straunge goddes, to prouoke me vnto wrath.

¹⁷ And therfore thus sayeth the lord: ye haue not obeyed me, euery man to proclame fredom vnto his brother and neighbour: wherfore I wil call you vnto a fredome, sayeth the Lorde, euen vnto the swerde, to the pestilence, & to honger, & will make you to be plaged in all the kingedomes of the earthe. ¹⁸ Yea those men that haue broken my couenaunt, and not kepte the wordes of the appoyntment, which they made before me: when they hewed the calfe in two, and when there wente thorowe the two halfes therof. ¹⁹ The Princes of Iuda, the Princes of Ierusalem, the gelded men, the priestes and all the people of the lande, whiche wente thorowe the two sides of the calfe. ²⁰ Those men will I geue into the power of their enemies, & into the handes of them that folowe vpon their lyues. And their dead bodies shalbe meate for the foules of the ayre, and beastes of the felde. ²¹ As for Zedekiah the Kynge of Iuda and his Princes, I wil delyuer them into the power of their enemies, and of them that desyre to slaye them, and into the hande of the kynge of Babylons hoste whyche now is departed from you. ²² But thorowe my commaundement (sayeth the Lord) they shall come again before this cytye, they shall fyght agaynste it, winne it, and burne it. Moreouer I wyll laye the cities of Iuda so wast, that no man shal dwell therin.

¹⁰ For though ye had slayne the whole hoste of the Caldees, that besege you, and euery one of the slayne laye in his tente, yet should they stande vp, and set fyre vpon this cytie.

¹⁷ Then Zedekiah the kinge sent for him, and called him, and asked hym quyetly in hys owne house, sayinge: thynkest thou this busynes (that now is in hande) commeth of the Lorde? Ieremye answered: yea that it doth: and thou (said he) shalt be delyuered in to the kinge of Babylons power.

¹⁸ But yf thou wylt not go forth to the kynge of Babylons prynces, then shall this cytye be delyuered into the handes of the Caldees whiche shal set fyre vpon it, & thou shalt not be able to escape them. ¹⁹ And Zedekiah sayde vnto Ieremy: I am afrayde for the Iewes, that are fled vnto the Caldees, lest I come in their handes, & so they to haue me in derysyon. ²⁰ But Ieremye answerde: No, they shall not betraye the. O herken vnto the voyce of the Lord (I beseche the) whyche I speake vnto the, so shalt thou be wel, and saue thy lyfe. ²¹ But yf thou wylt not go forth, the Lord hath told me this planely. ²² Beholde al the wemen that are left in the kynge of Iudaes house, shall go out to the kyng of Babylons princes. For they thincke, that thou art disceyued: and that men in whome thou diddest put thy truste, haue gotten the vnder, & set thy fete fast in the mire, and gone their waye from the. ²³ Therefore al thy wyues with their children shall fle vnto the Caldees, and thou shalte not escape their handes, but shalt be the kinge of Babylons presoner, and this cytie shalbe brente.

² And in the .xi. year of Zedekiah, in the fourth Moneth, the .ix. day of the Moneth, he brake into the citie). ³ Then al the Princes of the king of Babilon came in, and sat them doune vnder the porte: Neregel, Sarezer, Samegarnabo, Sarsachim, Rabsaris, Neregel, Sarezer, Rabmah, with all the other princes of the king of Babilon. ⁴ And when Zedekiah the king of Iuda wt his soudiars saw them, they fled, and departed out of the citie by night thorow the kinges garden, & thorow the porte that is betwene the two walles, and so they went towarde the wildernesse. ⁵ But the Caldees Hoste folowed faste after them, and toke Zedekiah in the felde of Iericho, and brought him presoner to Nabuchodonozor the kinge of Babilon vnto Reblath, that lyeth in the lande of Hemath, where he gaue iudgement vpon him. ⁶ So the king of Babilon caused the children of Zedekiah and all the nobles of Iuda be slayne, before hys face at Reblath. ⁷ And made Zedekiahs eyes to be put out, and bounde him with chaynes and sent him to Babilon. ⁸ Moreouer, the Caldees brent vp the kinges palace, with the other houses of the people, and brake doune the walles of Ierusalem. ⁹ As for the remnaunt of the people that were in the citie, and suche as were come to helpe them (whatsoeuer was left of the comen sort) Nabuzaradan the chefe captayne caried them to Babilon.

¹ Now when Ieremye had ended all the wordes of the Lord God vnto the people (for their sakes to whome God had sent hym)

¹ This is the worde that was shewed to Ieremy concerninge all the Iewes, whyche dwelt in Egipte, at Magdall, at Thaphnis, at Memphis & in the lande of Patures.

²⁶ And therefore: heare the worde of the Lorde al Iuda, ye that dwel in the lande of Egipte. Beholde, I haue sworne by my greate name, sayeth the Lorde, that my name shall not be rehearsed thorow any mans mouth of Iuda, in al the lande of Egipte: to saye: The lord God lyueth, ²⁷ for I wil watch, to plage them, and not for their wealth. And al the men of Iuda that be in the lande of Egipte, shal perysh with the swerde and with honger, vntil they be vtterly destroyed. ²⁸ Neuertheles, those that fled away for the swerde, shal come agayne into the land of Iuda, but there shalbe verye fewe of them. And all the remnaunte of Iuda, that are gone into Egypte, there to dwel, shal knowe whose wordes shalbe founde true: theirs or myne. ²⁹ Take this for a token, that I wyll vyset you in this place, sayeth the Lorde, and that ye maye knowe, howe that I (wythoute doute) will perfourme my purpose vpon you, to punishe you. ³⁰ Beholde, sayeth the Lorde, I wyll delyuer Pharao Hophrea kynge of Egipte into the handes of his enemies, that seke after his life: euen as I gaue Zedekiah the kinge of Iuda into the handes of Nabuchodonozor king of Babylon, whiche sought after his lyfe.

² He liued wickedly before the Lorde euen as Iehoakim dyd. ³ Wherfore the Lorde was angrie at Ierusalem and Iuda, so longe tyll he had cast them out of his presence. And Zedekiah fell from the kynge of Babylon. ⁴ But in the .ix. yeare of his raygne, In the tenth Moneth, the tenth daye of the Moneth it happened, that Nabuchodonozor the Kynge of Babylon wyth all hys Hoste came before Ierusalem, and beseged it, and made them bulworckes rounde aboute it. ⁵ And this beseging of the cytye endured vnto the .xi. yeare of kyng Zedekiah. ⁶ And in the fourth Moneth, the .ix. daye of the Moneth, there was so greate honger in the cytye, that there were no more vytayles for the people of the lande. ⁷ So all the soudyers brake awaye, & fled out of the cytie by myght thorow the waye of the porte betwene the two walles by the kynges garden. Now the Caldees had compassed the cytie rounde aboute, yet wente these men their waye to warde the wyldernesse. ⁸ And so the Caldees folowed vpon them, & toke Zedekiah the kynge in the felde of Ierycho, when his hoost was runne from him. ⁹ So they caryed the kynge awaye presoner to Reblath, vnto the kynge of Babylon in the lande of Hemath, where he gaue iudgement vpon hym. ¹⁰ The kynge of Babylon also caused Zedekiahs sonnes to be slayne before his face, yee & put all the princes of Iuda to death at Reblath. ¹¹ Moreouer he put out the eyes of Zedekiah, caused hym to be bounde with chynes, to be caried vnto Babylon: and lett hym lye in preson, tyll he dyed.

¹² The chefest that is amonge you, shall lade hys shoulders in the darcke, and get him awaye. He shall breake doune the wal, to cary stuf there thorowe: He shall couer hys face, that he se not the grounde, with his eyes. ¹³ My lyne wyll I sprede oute vpon hym, & catche him in my net, & carye hym to Babylon, in the lande of the Caldees: whiche he shall not se, and yet shall he dye there. ¹⁴ As for al his helpers, & all hys hostes, that be aboute hym, I wyll scatre them towarde all the wyndes, and drawe out a sweard after them. ¹⁵ So when I haue scatred them amonge the Heathen, and strowed them in the landes, they shall knowe, that I am the Lorde. ¹⁶ But I wyll leaue a lytle nombre of them from the swearde, hunger and pestilence: to tell all theyr abhomynacyons amonge the Heathen, where they come, that they maye knowe, howe that I am the Lorde.

¹¹ Moreouer, the worde of the Lorde came vnto me sayinge: ¹² Speake to that frowarde housholde: knowe ye not, what these thinges do signyfye? Tell them: Beholde the king of Babylon came to Ierusalem, and toke the kynge and hys Princes, and ledde them to Babylon. ¹³ He toke of the kinges sede, and made a couenaunt wyth him, and toke an ooth of him. The Prynces of the lande toke he wyth hym also, ¹⁴ that the land myght be holden in subieccyon, and not to rebelle, but kepe the couenaunt, and fulfyll it. ¹⁵ But he fell from him, & sent hys Embassitoures into Egipte, that he myght haue horses and much people. Should that prospere? Shoulde he be kept safe, that doeth suche thynges? Or shoulde he escape that breaketh his couenaunt? ¹⁶ As truely as I lyue sayeth the Lorde God: He shal dye at Babylon, in the place where the kyng dwelleth, that made him King: whose othe he hath despysed, and whose couenaunte he hath broken. ¹⁷ Neyther shall Pharao wyth his greate hoste and multitude of people, maynteyne him in the warre: when they cast vp dyches, and set vp bulworches to destroye much people. ¹⁸ For seyng he hath despysed the othe, and broken the couenaunt (where as he yet gaue his hande thervpon) and done all these thynges, he shall not escape. ¹⁹ Therfore thus sayeth the Lorde God: As truely as I lyue. I wil bring myne othe that he hath despised, & my couenaunt that he hath broken, vpon his owne heade. ²⁰ I will cast my net aboute hym, and catche him in my yarne. To Babylon wil I carye him, there wyll I punyshe him, because of the greate offence that he made me. ²¹ As for those that fle from him out of the hoste, they shalbe slayne with the swerd. The residue shalbe scatred toward all the wyndes, and ye shal knowe, that I the Lorde haue spoken it.
