I will tell thee the mystical meaning of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns. ⁸ the beast that thou sawest, was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, shall wonder when they behold the beast that was, and is not, but shall be. ⁹ the meaning is very comprehensive. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth. ¹⁰ they likewise signify seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; when he comes, he will continue but a short space. ¹¹ the beast that was, and is not, is himself the eighth: he is of the seven, and shall be destroy'd. ¹² the ten horns which you saw, are ten kings, who have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings for a while with the beast. ¹³ they all agree in this, to give their power and strength to the beast. ¹⁴ they will make war with the lamb, but the lamb, who is lord of lords, and king of kings, together with those that are called, chosen, and faithful, shall overcome them. ¹⁵ Then he said to me, the waters which you saw, where the prostitute has her seat, are the people, the multitude, nations, and provinces. ¹⁶ the ten horns which you saw upon the beast, they shall hate the whore, they shall plunder, and strip her, eat her flesh, and burn her with fire. ¹⁷ for God hath put it in their hearts to execute his designs, in agreeing to give their kingdom to the beast, until the divine oracles shall be accomplished. ¹⁸ and the woman which you saw, is that great city, which reigns the empress of the kings of the earth.

³⁰ two persons of a glorious form were seen talking with him; they were Moses, and Elias,

³² Upon this, they said to one another, to what ardor did not our affections rise, while he talk'd with us by the way, and while he expounded to us the scriptures?

¹ At another time I had a vision, when I saw a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard talking to me, was like the sound of a trumpet; which said, "come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter."

¹ I saw another prodigy in heaven, great and marvellous, SEVEN ANGELS, having the seven last plagues, for by them the divine vengeance is consummated.

⁶ then the seven angels, who held the seven plagues, came out of the temple, cloathed in pure white linen, wearing upon their breasts girdles of gold. ⁷ and one of the four animals gave to the seven angels, seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever.

¹⁹ and the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

¹⁶ crying, alas, alas, that great city, that was cloathed in fine linnen, purple, and scarlet: decked with gold, precious stones and pearls: ¹⁷ her wealth is all sunk in a moment! the pilots and the passengers: the ships-crew, and the super-cargo's shall stand afar off, ¹⁸ and cry out, when they see the smoke of her burning, what city could be compar'd to this great city? ¹⁹ they will scatter dust on their heads, and cry with tears, and bemoaning, "alas, alas, that great city, which enrich'd all the traders by sea, by the consumption she made: how is she reduc'd to a desert, in an instant!"

² for just and right are his judgments; for he hath condemned the grand prostitute, who corrupted the earth with her licentiousness, and hath avenged the blood of his servants that were shed by her hand."

⁹ Then there came to me one of the seven angels, who had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, "come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the lamb's wife."

¹⁵ he that talked with me, had a golden reed to measure the city, its gates, and its walls.

¹⁰ because you have kept my precept about patience, I also will keep you in the time of persecution, which shall happen to all the world, to try the inhabitants of the earth.

⁸ And a second angel followed, saying, "Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, because she has made all nations drink of the deadly wine of her fornication."

¹³ they all agree in this, to give their power and strength to the beast.

¹⁷ for God hath put it in their hearts to execute his designs, in agreeing to give their kingdom to the beast, until the divine oracles shall be accomplished.

³ for all nations have drunk of the poisonous wine of her idolatry, the kings of the earth have submitted to her idolatries, and the merchants of the earth are grown rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

⁹ the kings of the earth, the accomplices of her licentiousness and luxury, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her conflagration,

²³ the lamp shall no more be lighted in thee; the bridal-song shall be heard there no more: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; all nations were seduc'd by thy enchantments.

³⁹ when they were come out of the water, the spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he pursued his way with joy.

⁴ that adversary that exalts it self above the divine authority of majesty: that is seated in the temple of God, pretending to be it self divine.

¹⁰ there I was in an exstacy on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a loud voice, like the sound of a trumpet,

² Immediately I was in an extasy: and I saw a throne placed in heaven, and one sitting on the throne.

³ And there appeared another wonder in heaven, it was a great red dragon, having seven heads, and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

⁶ but the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place for her maintenance, during a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

¹⁴ but to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to her place, where she is to be maintain'd for a time, and times, and half a time.

¹ Then I saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads, and ten horns; upon his horns were ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. ² and the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his throne, and great authority. ³ and I saw one of his heads, as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world went wondring after the beast. ⁴ They worshipped the dragon which had given his power to the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, "who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?" ⁵ there was given to him a mouth speaking great things, and blasphemy; and power was given to him for two and forty months. ⁶ and he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and those that dwell in heaven,

³ don't be led into any mistake, because the previous rebellion does not yet appear, nor the man of sin throw off the disguise, that offspring of perdition: ⁴ that adversary that exalts it self above the divine authority of majesty: that is seated in the temple of God, pretending to be it self divine. ⁵ don't you remember, I told you this, when I was with you? ⁶ and you know what hinders his throwing off the disguise at a time which he enjoys for the present. ⁷ for the secret spirit of misrule is ready to break out as soon as the obstacle is taken away: ⁸ and then the lawless will be discover'd, whom the Lord will extirpate by the spirit of his mouth, and at his glorious advent, will intirely abolish him, ⁹ who by the instigation of satan will make his parade with various arts, with fallacious signs and prodigies, ¹⁰ and with all the vile methods of imposture, to the ruin of those, who are averse to the truth, by which they might be saved.

⁶ reward her according to her dealings, and repay her double, according to her works: give her twice as much in the same cup which she gave you to drink, ⁷ give her torment and pain in proportion to her pride and luxury; for she said in her heart, "I am enthron'd like a queen, I am no widow, and shall see no sorrow."

¹² their gold, and silver, precious stones, and pearls, fine linnen, and purple, their silk, scarlet, and all sort of citron wood, their various vessels of ivory, and of precious wood, of brass, iron, and marble:

¹⁶ crying, alas, alas, that great city, that was cloathed in fine linnen, purple, and scarlet: decked with gold, precious stones and pearls:

¹⁹ who in the. end will be ruin'd, who place their religion in sensuality, their glory in that which is their shame, and fix their thoughts upon this earth.

⁷ for the secret spirit of misrule is ready to break out as soon as the obstacle is taken away:

¹ Take notice that in the latter days difficult incidents will arise; ² for men will be selfish, avaricious, vain, proud, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, ³ villainous, unnatural, perfidious, defamers, debauchees, ⁴ cruel, enemies to virtue, traitors, insolent, conceited, and more devoted to pleasure than to piety: ⁵ of which they wear the appearance, but disclaim its influence. have no intercourse with such.

³ saying, "hurt not the earth, nor the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads."

⁸ their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which in the mystical stile is called Sodom and Egypt, where our Lord was crucified.

⁷ and the angel said to me, wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystical meaning of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

² and he cried with a strong voice, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the abode of demons, the dungeon of every foul spirit, and a cage of every impure ill-boding bird.

⁹ the kings of the earth, the accomplices of her licentiousness and luxury, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her conflagration, ¹⁰ frightned at her torments they will stand afar off, and cry, "alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! what! is thy condemnation so suddenly come?"

²¹ Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great milstone, and threw it into the sea, saying, "thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, never to be found any more.

²⁰ that I was present, when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, that I abetted the slaughter, and watch'd the clothes of those who slew him.

¹³ I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where the throne of satan is: thou maintainest my name, and hast not renounced your faith in me, even at a time when Antipas my faithful martyr was slain among you, where Satan dwells.

⁹ When he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they maintain'd. ¹⁰ and they cried with a loud voice, saying, "how long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou defer doing justice, and avenging our blood on those that dwell on the earth?"

¹¹ they overcame him by the blood of the lamb, and by the word to which they gave testimony; for their lives they expos'd to the last.

⁷ he was permitted to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all the tribes, and provinces, and nations.

¹⁵ he had power likewise to animate the image made for the beast, so that the image was made to speak, and as many as would not worship the image were order'd to be killed.

⁶ for they have shed the blood of saints and prophets: thou hast given them blood to drink; for they have deserv'd it."

¹⁸ he that does all these things, is the Lord himself that has said it." for the works of God are all known to him from the beginning of the world.

⁴ according as he had chosen us in himself before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy, free from vice, and devoted to virtue.

⁵ he that overcometh, the same shall be cloathed in white raiment; I will not efface his name out of the book of life, but I will own him before my father, and before his angels.

¹ And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit. ² and he opened the bottomless pit, and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkned by reason of the smoke of the pit.

⁷ when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit, will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them.

⁸ And a second angel followed, saying, "Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, because she has made all nations drink of the deadly wine of her fornication." ⁹ And a third angel followed them, crying with a loud voice, "if any man worship the beast, or his image, or receive his mark on his forehead, or in his hand, ¹⁰ he shall drink of the wine of the divine vengeance, the strongest wine that can be poured out of the cup of his indignation; He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone, in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the lamb: ¹¹ the smoke of their torment shall ascend for ever and ever: they who worship the beast or his image, they who receive the mark of his name, shall have no rest either day or night." ¹² here is the patience of the saints, who keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. ¹³ Then I heard a voice from heaven, saying to me, "write, blessed are the dead who die in the Lord; yes, from henceforth, saith the spirit, they shall rest from their labours; and the recompence of their labours shall follow them." ¹⁴ again I looked, and I saw a white cloud, and there was sitting upon the cloud one like the son of man, having a crown of gold upon his head, ¹⁵ and a sharp sickle in his hand. and another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, "thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the reaping time is come; for the ¹⁶ harvest of the earth is ripe." so he that sat on the cloud, stretch'd out his sickle to the earth; and the earth was reaped. ¹⁷ Then another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, ¹⁸ he also having a sharp sickle. and another angel came out from the altar, who presided over the fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, "stretch out thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are full ripe." ¹⁹ so the angel stretch'd out his sickle to the earth, and gathered the vintage of the earth, and cast it into the great wine-press of the divine vengeance. ²⁰ and the grapes were press'd without the City, and blood came out of the wine-press, even to the horse-bridles: for the space of sixteen hundred furlongs.

¹ THEN I heard a terrible voice from the temple, crying to the seven angels, "go pour out the VIALS of divine vengeance upon the earth." ² Immediately the FIRST went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisom and grievous ulcer upon the men who had the mark of the beast, and upon those who worshipped his image. ³ The SECOND angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea. ⁴ The THIRD angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains; and they became blood. ⁵ and I heard the angel of the waters say, "thou art just, who art, and hast always been holy, because thou hast judged thus: ⁶ for they have shed the blood of saints and prophets: thou hast given them blood to drink; for they have deserv'd it." ⁷ and I heard another from the altar say, "oh! Lord God almighty, true and just are thy judgments." ⁸ The FOURTH angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given to him to scorch mankind with its fire. ⁹ and men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, who hath power over these plagues: and they repented not, to give him glory. ¹⁰ And the FIFTH angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness, and they gnawed their tongues for pain. ¹¹ and blasphemed the God of heaven, because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. ¹² And the SIXTH angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. ¹³ and I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. ¹⁴ for they are the spirits of demons working miracles, which make a progress to the kings of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God almighty. ¹⁵ "I shall come with surprize, happy he that is upon the watch, and keepeth his garments pure, that his vices may not put him to shame." ¹⁶ and he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue, Armageddon. ¹⁷ And the SEVENTH angel poured out his vial into the air; and there a loud voice issued from the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, "it is done." ¹⁸ and there were voices, thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake and so great.

¹⁵ out of his mouth went a sharp sword, in order to smite the nations: for he shall rule them with an iron sceptre: and tread the wine-press of the fierce vengeance of almighty God. ¹⁶ on the mantle about his thigh was this inscription, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. ¹⁷ I saw likewise an angel standing upon the sun; and he cryed with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, "come and gather your selves together to the supper of the great God; ¹⁸ that ye may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses, and of those that ride on them, the flesh of all that are free, and all that are slaves, both small and great." ¹⁹ Then I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, with their armies assembled, to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. ²⁰ and the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles in his favour, by which he seduc'd those that had received the mark of the beast, and those that worshipped his image. these were both cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. ²¹ all the rest were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were satiated with their flesh.

¹⁰ the devil that seduced them, shall be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

¹² and I saw the dead, small and great, stand before the throne; the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out. of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

¹⁵ and whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire.

¹¹ to whom he answered, because you are allowed to know the mysteries of the gospel-dispensation, but to them it is not allowed.

¹⁵ When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, mention'd by Daniel the prophet, stand about the holy place, (let him that readeth,

¹ Then I saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads, and ten horns; upon his horns were ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

¹⁸ here is wisdom. let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred sixty six.

³ so he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet-coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads, and ten horns.

¹⁶ the ten horns which you saw upon the beast, they shall hate the whore, they shall plunder, and strip her, eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.

¹⁰ frightned at her torments they will stand afar off, and cry, "alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! what! is thy condemnation so suddenly come?"

¹⁷ her wealth is all sunk in a moment! the pilots and the passengers: the ships-crew, and the super-cargo's shall stand afar off,

¹⁹ they will scatter dust on their heads, and cry with tears, and bemoaning, "alas, alas, that great city, which enrich'd all the traders by sea, by the consumption she made: how is she reduc'd to a desert, in an instant!"

²⁸ to effect what thy power and thy wisdom pre-determined to be done.

²⁷ only conduct yourselves in a manner becoming the gospel of Christ, that whether I come to see you, or else am absent, I may have this account of you, that you are stedfastly of the same resolution, and unanimously contend for the faith of the gospel,

² compleat my joy, by pursuing the same view, living in mutual love, by being unanimous, and cultivating that harmony.

¹⁴ thus many are called, but few are converted.

⁴⁰ and the king will reply, I declare unto you, your having done this for one of the least of these my brethren, is the same thing as doing it for me.

¹⁸ and Jesus came, and said to them, all power has been given me in heaven and in earth.

¹⁶ it was not you that chose me, but I that chose you, and establish'd you, that your travels may be fruitful, and your fruit be lasting: so that whatever ye shall ask of the father for my sake, he will give it you.

⁴ and he fell to the ground, and heard a voice which said to him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? ⁵ and he said, who art thou, Lord? and the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: [it is hard for thee to kick against the goad. Then trembling with the fright Saul said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? and the Lord said to him,]

³⁰ but whom he predispos'd, he calls: and whom he has call'd, he justifies: and whom he has justified, he glorifies.

³⁷ yet after all we are more than conquerors, through him that loved us.

²⁴ and then will be the end, when he shall deliver up the kingdom to God even the father; after having abolished all rule, and all authority, and power.

¹⁵ whose advent HE will in his own time display, WHO is perfectly happy, who alone is omnipotent, the king of kings, and the lord of all that bear rule;

⁴ he that enters into the service, disengages himself from civil affairs, that he may be acceptable to his officer.

¹ Wherefore, christian brethren, you who are called to an heavenly inheritance, consider the apostle and high priest of the faith we profess, even Christ Jesus; ² who was faithful to him that constituted him such, as Moses likewise was faithful in all his administration of God's house.

⁹ and this they were destin'd to. but you are the chosen race, you are kings and priests, the holy nation, the peculiar people, that you might display his glory, who called you out

⁵ and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the first-born of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth: unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins by his own blood,

¹⁰ fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life.

²¹ to him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my father in his throne.

¹² And when I beheld the opening of the sixth seal, there was a great earthquake: the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; the stars ¹³ of heaven fell down to the earth, even as a fig-tree casteth its untimely figs when it is shaken by a mighty wind: the heaven disappeared as a book when it is rolled up: ¹⁴ every mountain and island were moved out of their places: the kings of the earth, the great men, ¹⁵ the rich men, the chief captains, and the mighty men, every bond-man, and every free-man, bid themselves in the caverns, and in the rocks of the mountains; and said to the mountains, and to the rocks, ¹⁶ "fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the lamb: ¹⁷ for the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to subsist?"

⁶ Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets, prepared themselves to sound. ⁷ the first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, which fell upon the earth: and a third part of the earth, and a third part of the trees was burnt up, and all the green grass.

¹ THEN I looked, and I saw a lamb on mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his name and his father's name writ on their foreheads. ² and I heard a voice from heaven, which was like the noise of many waters, or like a great thunder-clap: I heard too a sound like that of a harp, when touch'd by the hand of a musician. ³ and a new song was sung before the throne, and before the four animals, and the elders: and no one could learn that song, but the hundred forty four thousand, who were ransom'd from the earth. ⁴ these are they who were not defiled with women: for they are virgins: these are they who follow the lamb wherever he goes: these were ransom'd from among men, being the first fruits unto God, and to the lamb.

¹⁴ for they are the spirits of demons working miracles, which make a progress to the kings of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God almighty.

¹⁴ and the armies of heaven followed him upon white horses, cloathed in fine linnen, white and clean.

¹¹ then he said to me, "thou must prophesy again of many people, nations, provinces, and kings."

⁹ the people of different tribes, languages, and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and not suffer them to be buried in the grave.

⁷ he was permitted to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all the tribes, and provinces, and nations. ⁸ all that dwell upon the earth will worship him, whose names are not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the lamb, that was slain.

¹ Then there came one of the seven angels that had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying "come hither, I will explain to you the judgment of the great whore, that sitteth upon many waters:

¹² And the SIXTH angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

¹ Then there came one of the seven angels that had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying "come hither, I will explain to you the judgment of the great whore, that sitteth upon many waters: ² by whom the kings of the earth became idolaters, and the inhabiters of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of idolatry."

¹⁰ they likewise signify seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; when he comes, he will continue but a short space.

¹² the ten horns which you saw, are ten kings, who have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings for a while with the beast. ¹³ they all agree in this, to give their power and strength to the beast.

⁸ therefore shall her plagues come, mortality, mourning, and famine all at once: and she shall be consumed with fire: for the Lord God, who condemns her, is almighty.

¹⁶ crying, alas, alas, that great city, that was cloathed in fine linnen, purple, and scarlet: decked with gold, precious stones and pearls: ¹⁷ her wealth is all sunk in a moment! the pilots and the passengers: the ships-crew, and the super-cargo's shall stand afar off,

¹⁸ that ye may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses, and of those that ride on them, the flesh of all that are free, and all that are slaves, both small and great."

³ now satan had inspired Judas surnam'd Iscariot, one of the twelve, what to do.

²² the son of man indeed must die, as it was decreed: but wo to that man by whom he is betrayed.

³⁷ for take notice, that scripture, "and he was number'd among the transgressors," is yet to be accomplished in my person: and all that relates to me is going to be consummated.

³⁵ if the law stiles them Gods, who received the orders of God, and if the scripture is of any authortiy,

³⁹ therefore they could not believe, according to what Esaias said in another place, "he hath blinded their eyes, ⁴⁰ and hardned their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them."

² while they were at supper, (the devil having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him) Jesus,

¹⁸ I say not this of you all; for I know whom I have chosen: and that passage of the scripture must be fulfilled, "He that eateth bread with me, hath lift up his heel against me."

²⁴ they said therefore among themselves, let us not rent it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: so that the scripture was fulfilled, which said, "they parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots." this was what the soldiers actually did.

²⁸ after this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be be fulfilled, said, I thirst.

²⁷ for it was truly against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, that Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, united themselves in this city, ²⁸ to effect what thy power and thy wisdom pre-determined to be done.

¹⁶ But thanks be to God, who disposed Titus to be so industrious for you.

¹⁰ and with all the vile methods of imposture, to the ruin of those, who are averse to the truth, by which they might be saved. ¹¹ wherefore God will suffer a spirit of delusion to work them into the belief of a lye: ¹² to the condemnation of all those, who instead of embracing the gospel, had pleasure in iniquity.

¹³ Let no man under temptation, say, it is God that tempts him; for as he is incapable of moral evil, he can't influence any one thereto. ¹⁴ a man is instigated, and drawn into the snare by his own vicious passions, which once indulg'd, are productive of sin, ¹⁵ and the genuine offspring of sin is death. ¹⁶ Don't be deluded, my brethren; ¹⁷ every thing that is valuable, every gift that leads to perfection is deriv'd from heaven, it descends from that original light, which knows no change, no shadow, or decline:

¹¹ and white robes were given to every one of them, and it was said unto them, that they should have patience yet for a little while, till the number of their fellow-servants, and their brethren, that should be killed, as they were, should be complete.

⁷ but when the seventh angel should speak, and the trumpet should sound, the mystery of God should be accomplish'd, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

¹ At that time, Cesar Augustus published an edict, to make a register of the Roman empire.

⁴ his tail swept the third part of the stars of heaven; and cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered, in order to devour her child as soon as it was born.
