¹ THEN I heard a terrible voice from the temple, crying to the seven angels, "go pour out the VIALS of divine vengeance upon the earth." ² Immediately the FIRST went, and poured out his vial upon the earth; and there fell a noisom and grievous ulcer upon the men who had the mark of the beast, and upon those who worshipped his image. ³ The SECOND angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea. ⁴ The THIRD angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains; and they became blood. ⁵ and I heard the angel of the waters say, "thou art just, who art, and hast always been holy, because thou hast judged thus: ⁶ for they have shed the blood of saints and prophets: thou hast given them blood to drink; for they have deserv'd it." ⁷ and I heard another from the altar say, "oh! Lord God almighty, true and just are thy judgments." ⁸ The FOURTH angel poured out his vial upon the sun; and power was given to him to scorch mankind with its fire. ⁹ and men were scorched with great heat, and blasphemed the name of God, who hath power over these plagues: and they repented not, to give him glory. ¹⁰ And the FIFTH angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness, and they gnawed their tongues for pain. ¹¹ and blasphemed the God of heaven, because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds. ¹² And the SIXTH angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. ¹³ and I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. ¹⁴ for they are the spirits of demons working miracles, which make a progress to the kings of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God almighty. ¹⁵ "I shall come with surprize, happy he that is upon the watch, and keepeth his garments pure, that his vices may not put him to shame." ¹⁶ and he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue, Armageddon. ¹⁷ And the SEVENTH angel poured out his vial into the air; and there a loud voice issued from the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, "it is done." ¹⁸ and there were voices, thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake and so great. ¹⁹ and the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. ²⁰ and every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. ²¹ and there fell upon men a great hail out of heaven, every stone about the weight of a TALENT: and men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, for the plague thereof was exceeding great.

⁴¹ the son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all that make others offend, and those who do iniquity; ⁴² and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

⁹ And a third angel followed them, crying with a loud voice, "if any man worship the beast, or his image, or receive his mark on his forehead, or in his hand, ¹⁰ he shall drink of the wine of the divine vengeance, the strongest wine that can be poured out of the cup of his indignation; He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone, in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the lamb: ¹¹ the smoke of their torment shall ascend for ever and ever: they who worship the beast or his image, they who receive the mark of his name, shall have no rest either day or night."

¹⁵ and a sharp sickle in his hand. and another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, "thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the reaping time is come; for the

¹⁸ he also having a sharp sickle. and another angel came out from the altar, who presided over the fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, "stretch out thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are full ripe."

¹ I saw another prodigy in heaven, great and marvellous, SEVEN ANGELS, having the seven last plagues, for by them the divine vengeance is consummated.

⁵ After that I looked, and the tabernacle of the testimony in the heavenly temple was opened: ⁶ then the seven angels, who held the seven plagues, came out of the temple, cloathed in pure white linen, wearing upon their breasts girdles of gold. ⁷ and one of the four animals gave to the seven angels, seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever. ⁸ the temple was filled with smoke from the emanations of divine power; and no one could enter into the temple, till the seven plagues were executed by the seven angels.

²⁰ a certain beggar named Lazarus, was lying at his gate, and tho' cover'd with ulcers, the very dogs came and fawned upon him. ²¹ but he wanted to be fed with the crumbs, that fell from the rich man's table. ²² at length the beggar died: and was conveyed by the angels to Abraham's bower. the rich man died too, and was buried.

²³ but at the instant an angel of the Lord smote him, because he did not glorify God: so that he became a prey to worms and died. In the mean time, the

¹⁵ he had power likewise to animate the image made for the beast, so that the image was made to speak, and as many as would not worship the image were order'd to be killed. ¹⁶ he likewise obliged all, both small and great, rich and poor, the freeman and the slave, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: and order'd, ¹⁷ that no body should buy or sell unless he had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. ¹⁸ here is wisdom. let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred sixty six.

¹⁶ harvest of the earth is ripe." so he that sat on the cloud, stretch'd out his sickle to the earth; and the earth was reaped.

¹¹ and blasphemed the God of heaven, because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

⁸ And the second angel sounded, and a great mountain as it were all on fire was cast into the sea; and the third part of the sea became blood: ⁹ and the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.

² he held in his hand a little book open: his right foot was upon the sea, and his left foot on the land.

⁶ during their prophecy they have power to prevent any rain descending from heaven: their power extends over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with what plagues they please.

¹ Then I saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads, and ten horns; upon his horns were ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

¹⁰ And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven, burning like a flambeau, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and upon the fountains of waters. ¹¹ the name of the star was wormwood: and the third part of the waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter.

⁷ "fear the Lord, and give glory to him, for the hour of his judgment is come: adore therefore him that made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and the fountains."

⁵ and I heard the angel of the waters say, "thou art just, who art, and hast always been holy, because thou hast judged thus:

²⁵ O righteous father, the world hath not known thee; but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

⁵ however by your impenitence, and the insensibility of your heart, you treasure up for yourself wrath against the day of wrath, and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

⁵ but say you, "if our unfaithfulness displays the veracity of God, what shall we say? is it not injustice in God to inflict punishment?"

⁵ by which you may be assur'd, that they will be punish'd by the divine justice, and that you shall be rewarded with the kingdom of God, for which you suffer; ⁶ since it is agreeable to his justice to afflict those in their turn, who afflict you:

⁴ JOHN to the seven churches which are in Asia: favour and peace be with you from him WHO IS, WHO WAS, WHO WILL BE; and from the seven spirits who are before his throne;

⁸ I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, saith the Lord, who is, and who was, and who will be, the almighty.

⁸ the four animals had each of them six wings about him, and they were full of eyes within; and they never ceas'd day and night, crying, HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, Lord God ALMIGHTY, WHO WAS, WHO IS, AND WHO WILL BE. and when those animals gave glory,

¹⁷ saying, "we give thee thanks, O Lord God almighty, who. art, and who wast; because thou hast assum'd thy great power, and hast reigned.

³ and they sung the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the lamb, saying, "great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou king of ages. ⁴ who will not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: and all nations shall come to adore thee; because thy judgments have been display'd."

⁴ The THIRD angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains; and they became blood.

⁷ and I heard another from the altar say, "oh! Lord God almighty, true and just are thy judgments."

² for just and right are his judgments; for he hath condemned the grand prostitute, who corrupted the earth with her licentiousness, and hath avenged the blood of his servants that were shed by her hand."

² for according as ye judge others, ye shall be judged yourselves: the measure you mete, shall be measured to you again.

³⁵ but they seiz'd his servants, beat some, killed one, and stoned another. ³⁶ then he sent a greater number of servants, than at first: who met with the same treatment. ³⁷ but last of all, he sent his son, saying, they will reverence my son. ³⁸ but when the tenants saw the son, they said among themselves, this is the heir, come, let us kill him, and then seize on his inheritance. ³⁹ so seizing upon him, they turn'd him out of the vineyard, and slew him. ⁴⁰ when the master therefore of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants? ⁴¹ they answered, he will give those wretches no quarter, and will let out his vineyard to such as shall duly account for the profits thereof.

³⁰ and say, if we had liv'd in the time of our forefathers, we would not have been accessory with them in shedding the blood of the prophets. ³¹ whereby you yourselves own that ye are indeed the children of those who killed the prophets, ³² children that can't fail to fill up the measure of your fathers iniquities. ³³ ye serpents, ye brood of vipers, how can ye escape the punishment of Gehenna? ³⁴ wherefore I shall send you prophets, and wise men, and Scribes; you will kill some, and crucify others, many will ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city. ³⁵ so that you maybe charg'd with all the innocent blood shed upon earth, from the blood of Abel the just, unto the blood of Zacharias, the son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. ³⁶ I declare unto you, all these things shall befall this generation. ³⁷ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, but ye would not!

⁴⁹ agreeably to this, in the Wisdom of God 'tis said, "I will send them prophets and apostles: some they will kill, and others they will persecute: ⁵⁰ " so that the blood of all the prophets, which has been shed since the creation of the world, may be required of this generation,

⁴⁸ whereas he that does not know it, and does things worthy of chastisement, shall receive fewer stripes. for to whom much is given, of him shall much be required, and the more a man has been trusted, the greater will be the demand.

²⁹ don't you think then that he deserves a much greater punishment, who hath despised the son of God, and counted the blood of the covenant wherewith be was sanctified, to have been justly shed, thereby offering an indignity to the spirit of grace?

¹⁰ and they cried with a loud voice, saying, "how long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou defer doing justice, and avenging our blood on those that dwell on the earth?" ¹¹ and white robes were given to every one of them, and it was said unto them, that they should have patience yet for a little while, till the number of their fellow-servants, and their brethren, that should be killed, as they were, should be complete.

¹⁸ the nations were enrag'd, but the time of thy vengeance is come, and the time when the dead are to be judged, when thou wilt reward thy servants the prophets, the saints, and those that fear thy name, small and great, and exterminate those who have corrupted the land."

¹⁰ he hath leadeth into captivity, shall be led into captivity: he that killeth with the sword, shall perish by the sword. here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

¹⁵ he had power likewise to animate the image made for the beast, so that the image was made to speak, and as many as would not worship the image were order'd to be killed.

⁶ and I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondred with great admiration. ⁷ and the angel said to me, wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystical meaning of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.

²⁰ O heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets, triumph at her ruin, since God hath avenged you on her.

²⁴ here it was, that the blood of the prophets, of the saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth, was found."

⁹ When he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they maintain'd.

³ and another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given to him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar, which was before the throne. ⁴ and the smoke of the incense together with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God, out of the angel's hand. ⁵ and the angel took the censer, and having filled it with the fire of the altar, he cast it upon the land: and there was a noise of thunders, and lightnings, and an earthquake.

¹⁰ he shall drink of the wine of the divine vengeance, the strongest wine that can be poured out of the cup of his indignation; He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone, in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the lamb:

⁶ so that as the sun arose it was scorched, and for want of root, withered away.

²⁵ there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars: and upon the earth distress of nations under confusion, the sea and the waves roaring.

²⁰ the sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and illustrious day of the Lord shall come.

¹² And when I beheld the opening of the sixth seal, there was a great earthquake: the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; the stars

¹⁶ they shall no more suffer hunger or thirst, neither shall the sun dart on them, nor any heat molest them.

¹² And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkned, and the day lost a third part of its light, and the night likewise.

² and he opened the bottomless pit, and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkned by reason of the smoke of the pit.

¹⁷ the horses I saw in my vision had this appearance: the riders had breast-plates of fire, of jacinth, and brimstone: the heads of the horses were like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire, smoke, and brimstone. ¹⁸ by these three the third part of men were killed, by the fire, by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.

³ I tell you, no: and except you repent, you shall all likewise perish.

²¹ and I am afraid, God will humble me when I come again among you, and I shall bewail many who have formerly sinned, and have not yet repented of their impurity, their fornication, and dissoluteness.

²¹ I gave her space to repent of her fornication, but she repented not.

²⁰ As for the rest of the men who were not killed by these plagues, they did not repent of their evil actions, so as to forbear worshipping demons, and idols of gold and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which can neither see, nor hear, nor walk:

¹³ at the same time there was a great earthquake; the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake seven thousand men were slain: and the remnant were frighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

¹⁰ And the FIFTH angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast; and his kingdom was full of darkness, and they gnawed their tongues for pain. ¹¹ and blasphemed the God of heaven, because of their pains and their sores, and repented not of their deeds.

⁵¹ and shall turn him out of the family, and give him the reward due to such behaviour: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

²⁸ there will be weeping, and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.

¹⁷ of God. Be respectful to all, love your brethren, fear God, and honour the king.

² but don't measure the court which is without; for it is given to the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they trample under foot two and forty months.

⁸ their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which in the mystical stile is called Sodom and Egypt, where our Lord was crucified.

¹⁰ the inhabitants of the land will rejoice, and triumph over them, they will send presents to one another; because the two prophets had gall'd the inhabitants of the land.

² and the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his throne, and great authority. ³ and I saw one of his heads, as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world went wondring after the beast. ⁴ They worshipped the dragon which had given his power to the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, "who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?"

⁹ the meaning is very comprehensive. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.

¹⁷ for God hath put it in their hearts to execute his designs, in agreeing to give their kingdom to the beast, until the divine oracles shall be accomplished.

² and he cried with a strong voice, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the abode of demons, the dungeon of every foul spirit, and a cage of every impure ill-boding bird.

¹¹ the merchants of the earth shall bewail and mourn over her, because there are none to purchase their cargo: ¹² their gold, and silver, precious stones, and pearls, fine linnen, and purple, their silk, scarlet, and all sort of citron wood, their various vessels of ivory, and of precious wood, of brass, iron, and marble: ¹³ nor their cinnamon, perfumes, essences, and frankincense; nor their wine, oil, fine flour, and wheat; their cattle, sheep, horses, and chariots; nor the servile souls of men. ¹⁴ the fruits, the object of your delight, are departed from thee, all your delicacy and magnificence are lost, beyond the possibility of a recovery! the merchants ¹⁵ of these wares who were enrich'd by her, shall stand afar off, under the dread of her torments, with tears and lamentations, ¹⁶ crying, alas, alas, that great city, that was cloathed in fine linnen, purple, and scarlet: decked with gold, precious stones and pearls: ¹⁷ her wealth is all sunk in a moment! the pilots and the passengers: the ships-crew, and the super-cargo's shall stand afar off, ¹⁸ and cry out, when they see the smoke of her burning, what city could be compar'd to this great city? ¹⁹ they will scatter dust on their heads, and cry with tears, and bemoaning, "alas, alas, that great city, which enrich'd all the traders by sea, by the consumption she made: how is she reduc'd to a desert, in an instant!"

²¹ Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great milstone, and threw it into the sea, saying, "thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, never to be found any more.

²³ the lamp shall no more be lighted in thee; the bridal-song shall be heard there no more: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; all nations were seduc'd by thy enchantments.

¹³ as for these impious impostors, they will go on from bad to worse, seducing others, and deluding themselves.

¹⁴ saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates."

¹⁴ the second wo is past, and behold, the third wo soon follows.

¹⁵ Then he said to me, the waters which you saw, where the prostitute has her seat, are the people, the multitude, nations, and provinces.

⁹ who by the instigation of satan will make his parade with various arts, with fallacious signs and prodigies, ¹⁰ and with all the vile methods of imposture, to the ruin of those, who are averse to the truth, by which they might be saved. ¹¹ wherefore God will suffer a spirit of delusion to work them into the belief of a lye:

¹ Now the spirit says expresly, that in the latter times some shall abandon the faith, by giving credit to seducing spirits, and the doctrine concerning demons; ² broach'd by hypocrititical impostors, whose consciences are cauteriz'd, ³ interdicting marriage; and the use of animal food; which God created for the repast of the faithful, who embrace the truth with thankfulness.

¹ Take notice that in the latter days difficult incidents will arise; ² for men will be selfish, avaricious, vain, proud, slanderers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, ³ villainous, unnatural, perfidious, defamers, debauchees, ⁴ cruel, enemies to virtue, traitors, insolent, conceited, and more devoted to pleasure than to piety: ⁵ of which they wear the appearance, but disclaim its influence. have no intercourse with such. ⁶ Of this number are they, who insinuate themselves into families, to make a prey of the weaker sex, who are inveigled by their vitious suggestions, abetted by their own subtle passions,

¹ As there were false prophets among the people of Israel, there will likewise be false doctors among you, who by introducing pernicious sects, and by renouncing the Lord, who bought them, will bring upon themselves swift destruction. ² many will follow their destructive maxims, and by their means christianity will be traduc'd. ³ By their artful discourses they will make you the tools of their avarice; but their condemnation has been a long time advancing, and their ruin is far from lingring.

¹ Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. ² by this you may distinguish the spirit of God: "every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is from God. ³ and every spirit that does not own that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is not from God." this is that anti-christian spirit which you have heard was to come, and even now it appears in the world.

³ And there appeared another wonder in heaven, it was a great red dragon, having seven heads, and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. ⁴ his tail swept the third part of the stars of heaven; and cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered, in order to devour her child as soon as it was born.

⁹ the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, call'd the devil or satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were precipitated with him. ¹⁰ then I heard a loud voice, which cry'd in the heaven, "the time of salvation, and power, the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ are now come: for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, is cast down. ¹¹ they overcame him by the blood of the lamb, and by the word to which they gave testimony; for their lives they expos'd to the last. ¹² therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. WO to the land, and to the sea: for the devil is come down unto you, in great rage, because he knows that his time is but short." ¹³ The dragon then finding that he was precipitated to the earth, persecuted the woman, who brought forth the man-child.

¹ Then I saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads, and ten horns; upon his horns were ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. ² and the beast which I saw was like a leopard, his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his throne, and great authority. ³ and I saw one of his heads, as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world went wondring after the beast. ⁴ They worshipped the dragon which had given his power to the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, "who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?" ⁵ there was given to him a mouth speaking great things, and blasphemy; and power was given to him for two and forty months. ⁶ and he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and those that dwell in heaven, ⁷ he was permitted to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all the tribes, and provinces, and nations.

¹¹ Then I beheld another beast coming out of the earth, it had two horns like a lamb, but it spake like a dragon. ¹² he exercised all the power of the first beast by his authority, and caused the earth, and those who dwell therein, to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. ¹³ he perform'd great wonders, so as to make fire come down from heaven on the earth, in the sight of men. ¹⁴ and he deceived the inhabitants of the earth, by the prodigys which he had power to effect by the influence of the beast, by telling the inhabitants of the earth, that he had made an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, but yet did revive.

¹⁴ for they are the spirits of demons working miracles, which make a progress to the kings of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God almighty.

²⁰ and the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles in his favour, by which he seduc'd those that had received the mark of the beast, and those that worshipped his image. these were both cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

¹⁰ the devil that seduced them, shall be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

²⁴ for there shall arise false Messiahs, and false prophets, and shall shew such astonishing miracles and prodigies, as to deceive, if that can do it, the very converts themselves.

²² for false Christs, and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and prodigies, so as to seduce, if it were possible, even the very elect.

¹ At that time, Cesar Augustus published an edict, to make a register of the Roman empire.

⁴⁴ you, who have the devil for your father, will execute the designs of your father: he was a murderer from the beginning, and deserted the truth, since he has no love for the truth: when he lyes, he speaks like himself: for he is a lyar, and the father of a lyar.

⁸ but Elymas (a name which signifies Magus) opposed them, endeavouring to seduce the proconsul from the faith. ⁹ then Saul, who was nam'd likewise Paul, full of the holy spirit, look'd fixedly upon him, ¹⁰ and said, "thou heap of imposture and mischief, offspring of the devil, and enemy to all justice, wilt thou not cease to pervers men from the right ways of the Lord?

⁸ First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is celebrated through the whole world.

¹³ for these are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguised so as to pass for true apostles. ¹⁴ and no wonder; for satan himself may put on the appearance of an angel of light. ¹⁵ therefore it is not strange if his agents are so disguised as to appear like ministers of the gospel; but their end shall be answerable to their actions.

⁹ who by the instigation of satan will make his parade with various arts, with fallacious signs and prodigies,

¹ Now the spirit says expresly, that in the latter times some shall abandon the faith, by giving credit to seducing spirits, and the doctrine concerning demons;

¹⁵ such wisdom is not derived from heaven; but is terrestrial, sensual, demoniacal.

¹⁹ we know that we are the children of God, and the rest of the world are subject to the evil spirit.

¹⁰ because you have kept my precept about patience, I also will keep you in the time of persecution, which shall happen to all the world, to try the inhabitants of the earth.

¹⁷ for the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to subsist?"

⁹ the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, call'd the devil or satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were precipitated with him.

³ and I saw one of his heads, as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world went wondring after the beast.

¹³ he perform'd great wonders, so as to make fire come down from heaven on the earth, in the sight of men. ¹⁴ and he deceived the inhabitants of the earth, by the prodigys which he had power to effect by the influence of the beast, by telling the inhabitants of the earth, that he had made an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, but yet did revive.

¹⁶ and he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue, Armageddon.

¹⁴ they will make war with the lamb, but the lamb, who is lord of lords, and king of kings, together with those that are called, chosen, and faithful, shall overcome them.

¹⁹ Then I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, with their armies assembled, to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. ²⁰ and the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles in his favour, by which he seduc'd those that had received the mark of the beast, and those that worshipped his image. these were both cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.

⁸ and shall go out to seduce the nations, which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to assemble them to battle: they will be as numerous as the sand of the sea.

⁴² watch therefore, for ye know not at what hour your Lord shall come. ⁴³ but this you conceive, that if a man knew at what hour of the night the thief would come, he would set a watch, and not suffer his house to be broke open.

¹³ watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour.

⁴¹ watch and pray that ye may not sink under the trial: the mind indeed is vigorous, but the flesh is weak.

³³ be circumspect, be vigilant, and devout: because you are uncertain when that time will be. ³⁴ when a man travels into foreign parts, he leaves his goods in charge to his servants, he appoints to every one his task, and orders the porter to be vigilant, ³⁵ watch ye therefore (for you don't know when the master of the house will return; whether at evening, or at midnight, or at the cock-crowing, or in the morning) ³⁶ for fear by his sudden return he should surprize you sleeping. ³⁷ what I say to you, I say to all, be vigilant.

³⁸ watch and pray, that you may not yield to temptation: the mind indeed is vigorous, but the body is weak.

³⁷ happy those servants, whom the master at his arrival shall find thus watching: I assure you, he shall gird himself, and make them sit at table, and will come to serve them. ³⁸ happy are the servants he finds in such a state, whether it be at the second or at the third watch of the night, when he comes. ³⁹ if the master of a house knew at what hour the thief would come, no doubt he would be on his guard, and not suffer him to break into his house. ⁴⁰ be ye therefore likewise prepar'd; for the son of man will come, when you least expect him. ⁴¹ then Peter said to him, Lord, do you apply this similitude to us, or to all in general? ⁴² Jesus answered, if there be a faithful prudent steward, appointed by his master to give his domesticks their stated allowance; happy is such a servant, ⁴³ whom his master at his return shall find so employ'd.

³⁶ be therefore upon your guard, be constant in prayer, that you may be accounted worthy to escape all those future ills, and be able to stand in the presence of the son of God.

³¹ be then upon the watch, and remember, that for three years I have not ceased by night, or by day to warn every soul of you, even with tears.

³ tho' should I be divested of this body, I shall not even then be destitute of one.

² for you very well know, that the day of the Lord steals on like a thief in the night. ³ whilst they flatter themselves with peace and safety, destruction shall fall upon them, like the pangs of a woman in travail, and they shall not escape.

⁶ therefore let us not sleep away our time like others, but be vigilant and temperate.

⁷ The consummation of all things draws nigh. be temperate, be vigilant in prayer.

¹⁰ As for that day of the Lord, it will advance like a thief: then the heavens will rush with violence, the boiling elements will be dissolved, and the earth with all its contents, shall be burnt away.

³ remember therefore what thou hast received and heard: observe it and repent. if therefore thou art not vigilant, I will come upon thee as a thief, thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee. ⁴ thou hast a few persons in Sardis who have not defiled their garments; they shall walk with me in white: for they are worthy.

¹⁸ I counsel thee to purchase of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayst be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayst be cloathed, and that the shame of thy nakedness may not appear; and an ointment for thine eyes to make you see clear.

² now there was at Jerusalem by the sheep-gate a bath, called in Hebrew, Bethesda, which had five portico's.

¹³ Pilate therefore hearing them talk at this rate, order'd Jesus to be brought forth, and then sat down in a place of Mosaic work on his tribunal, in Syriac call'd Gabbatha.

¹⁷ and he bearing his cross, marched out to a place called the skull, which is in the Syriac, Golgotha: where they crucified him,

¹⁴ we were all struck down: when I heard a voice directed to me pronounce these words in the Hebrew tongue, "Saul, Saul, why dost thou persecute me? it is dangerous for thee to kick against the goad."

¹¹ they had for their king the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek his name is Apollyon.

¹⁷ I saw likewise an angel standing upon the sun; and he cryed with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, "come and gather your selves together to the supper of the great God; ¹⁸ that ye may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses, and of those that ride on them, the flesh of all that are free, and all that are slaves, both small and great." ¹⁹ Then I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, with their armies assembled, to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. ²⁰ and the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles in his favour, by which he seduc'd those that had received the mark of the beast, and those that worshipped his image. these were both cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. ²¹ all the rest were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were satiated with their flesh.

³⁰ when Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, it is finished: and bowing his head, he expir'd.

² in which you formerly liv'd, influenc'd by the customs of this world, and by the prince of the aerial powers, the spirits that now actuate the incredulous:

¹² for our conflict is not barely with men, but with principalities, with potentates, with the princes of darkness, with wicked aereal spirits.

⁶ and sware by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created the heaven and all that is therein, the earth and all that is therein, the sea and all that is therein, "that the time should be no longer defer'd." ⁷ but when the seventh angel should speak, and the trumpet should sound, the mystery of God should be accomplish'd, as he hath declared to his servants the prophets.

¹⁵ The seventh angel sounded, and there were great voices in heaven, crying, "the kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ, and he shall reign for ever and ever."

¹⁹ THEN the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, voices, and thunders, and an earthquake, and great hail.

¹⁷ Then another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven,

⁵ After that I looked, and the tabernacle of the testimony in the heavenly temple was opened: ⁶ then the seven angels, who held the seven plagues, came out of the temple, cloathed in pure white linen, wearing upon their breasts girdles of gold.

¹ THEN I heard a terrible voice from the temple, crying to the seven angels, "go pour out the VIALS of divine vengeance upon the earth."

¹ Afterwards I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit, with a great chain in his hand. ² and he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the devil and satan, and bound him for a thousand years, ³ then cast him into the bottomless pit, there shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should seduce the nations no more, till the thousand years should he fulfilled: and after that, he was to be loosed for a short time.

⁶ and he said to me, "it is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end: to him that is a-thirst I will freely give of the fountain of living water.

²¹ for the desolation will be so dreadful, the like was never seen since the beginning of the world, no, nor ever shall be again.

⁵ out of the throne proceeded lightnings, and thundrings, and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven spirits of God.

⁵ and the angel took the censer, and having filled it with the fire of the altar, he cast it upon the land: and there was a noise of thunders, and lightnings, and an earthquake.

⁸ And a second angel followed, saying, "Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, because she has made all nations drink of the deadly wine of her fornication." ⁹ And a third angel followed them, crying with a loud voice, "if any man worship the beast, or his image, or receive his mark on his forehead, or in his hand, ¹⁰ he shall drink of the wine of the divine vengeance, the strongest wine that can be poured out of the cup of his indignation; He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone, in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the lamb:

⁵ Upon her forehead this mystical title was written, Babylon the great, the mother of harlots, and abominations of the earth.

¹⁸ and the woman which you saw, is that great city, which reigns the empress of the kings of the earth.

⁵ for her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembred her iniquities.

¹⁰ frightned at her torments they will stand afar off, and cry, "alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! what! is thy condemnation so suddenly come?"

¹⁴ every mountain and island were moved out of their places: the kings of the earth, the great men,

¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose presence the earth and the heaven fled away, so that they disappear'd.
