¹⁰ when Jesus heard it, he was surpriz'd, and said to his followers, I profess I have not met with such an instance of faith, no not in Israel. ¹¹ and I declare unto you, that many shall come from the east and from the west, and shall sit at table with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the heavenly kingdom.

¹³ go then and learn the meaning of that expression, "I will have mercy and not sacrifice:" for I am not come to call saints, but sinners.

⁵ Jesus made these twelve his missionaries, and gave them these instructions, don't go any where among the Gentiles, nor enter into any city of the Samaritans. ⁶ but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

¹⁹ go and instruct all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost:

³⁴ "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killest the prophets, and stonest those, who are sent unto thee: how often would I have gather'd thy children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and ye would not?"

³⁸ Peter replied, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the holy spirit.

¹⁹ repent therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshment shall come from the presence of the Lord, who shall send Jesus Christ,

²⁵ ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, when he said to Abraham, "all the families of the earth shall be blessed in your posterity." ²⁶ it is to you that God first of all sent his son Jesus, having raised him up to bless you, provided you all renounce your iniquities.

¹² salvation is not to be had by any other: for there is no other name under heaven given to men whereby we can be saved.

³¹ him hath God rais'd by his power to be the author of salvation, by giving repentance to Israel, and the remission of their sins.

⁴³ he is the person to whom all the prophets give this attestation, that all who believe in him, shall receive remission of sins, by his authority.

⁴⁶ for they heard them express their praises to God in divers languages. ⁴⁷ then Peter said, can we refuse the water of baptism to such as have received the holy spirit as well as we? ⁴⁸ so he directed they should be baptized in the name of the Lord. after which they desired him to stay some time with them.

¹⁸ Having heard this, they were appeas'd, and glorified God, saying, God has then granted salvation likewise to the gentiles, on the terms of their repentance.

³⁸ know then, my brethren, it is by him, that the remission of sins is offer'd to you: ³⁹ by him, every one who believes, is purged from all that guilt, for which the law of Moses had made no such provision.

⁴⁶ but Paul and Barnabas told them boldly, you indeed were the first, to whom the word of God was to be preach'd: but since you reject it, and judge your own selves unworthy of eternal life, be assur'd, we shall make the same offer to the Gentiles:

³⁰ God has been pleas'd to over-look this state of ignorance: but now he enjoins all men every where to repent: ³¹ because he has fix'd the day, when he will judge in equity, by that man, whom he has appointed thereto: of which he has given full proof to all the world, by having raised him from the dead."

⁵ and when Silas and Timothy were arriv'd from Macedonia, Paul with great concern remonstrated to the Jews, that Jesus was the Messiah: ⁶ but as they oppos'd him with invectives, he shook his garment, and said, "you your selves be answerable for your own destruction, I am clear: and for the future I shall address my self to the Gentiles."

²¹ remonstrating both to Jews and Gentiles the advantages of a sincere repentance, and of believing

¹⁸ and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and partake of the inheritance of the saints, by believing on me."

²⁰ first I warn'd the people of Damascus, of Jerusalem, of all Judea, and then the Gentiles, to repent, and turn to God, by acting suitably to their repentance.

²⁸ take notice therefore, that the offers of divine salvation are sent to the Gentiles, and they will receive them.

²⁰ the law was introduc'd, that the greatness of the fall might fully appear; but the more sin display'd its enormity, the divine favour was so much the more transcendent.

¹² In reality there is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile: they have all the same Lord, who is bountiful to all that call upon him. ¹³ "whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved." ¹⁴ But how, say you, shall they call on him on whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? ¹⁵ and how shall they hear without a preacher? and how shall they preach except they be sent? as it is written, "how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!" ¹⁶ 'tis true, faith comes by preaching, and preaching is by the divine appointment. ¹⁷ but all do not obey the gospel. for Esaias saith, "Lord, who hath believed our report?" ¹⁸ I reply, have they not heard? on the contrary, "their voice spread thro' all the earth, and their words to the remotest inhabitants thereof ."

²⁶ and then all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, "there shall come out of Sion the deliverer, and shall turn away Jacob from his impiety. ²⁷ for this is my covenant with them, that I shall take away their sins."

⁸ for I tell you, that Jesus Christ was a minister to the Jews, to manifest the veracity of God in fulfilling the promises made to the fathers: ⁹ and you Gentiles ought to glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, "for this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name ." ¹⁰ and again the scripture saith, "rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people." ¹¹ and elsewhere, praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles, and laud him, all ye people." ¹² besides Esaias saith, "there shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles hope." ¹³ Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope through the power of the holy spirit. ¹⁴ As to myself, I am persuaded, my brethren, that you abound in goodness, and in variety of knowledge, and are able to instruct one another. ¹⁵ nevertheless, brethren, I have writ to the Gentile part of you, and admonish'd you with the greater freedom by virtue of the commission that God has given me, ¹⁶ to be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, officiating the gospel of God, that the Gentiles might be made an acceptable offering, being sanctified by the holy spirit.

⁶ to display the glory of his grace, which has render'd us acceptable by his beloved son:

⁸ upon me, who am the meanest of all christians, is this favour bestowed, that I should proclaim to the Gentiles the undiscoverable advantages by Christ;

²⁷ to whom God does disclose the glorious advantages of this mystery to you Gentiles, to wit, "that by Christ you may have the expectation of glory."

¹² I write to you, dear children, because your sins are forgiven you upon the account of Christ.
