¹ In the beginning was the Logos, and the Logos was with God, and the Logos was God. ² the same was in the beginning with God. ³ all things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made. ⁴ the Life was produc'd in him, and the Life was the Light of men. ⁵ and the Light shineth in darkness, but the darkness did not receive it. ⁶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. ⁷ he came as a witness, to represent what he knew of the light, that by his means all might be convinc'd. ⁸ he was not that Light, but was sent to testify of that light. ⁹ HE was the true Light who came into the world, to enlighten every man. ¹⁰ he was in the world, even the world that had been made by him, but the world knew him not. ¹¹ he came unto his own, and his own received him not. ¹² but to as many as received him, and believed on him, he granted the privilege of being the sons of God. ¹³ a birth which they had not from circumcision, nor from the constitution of the body, nor the institution of man, but from God. ¹⁴ The Logos became incarnate, and had his tabernacle among us, being full of grace and truth; and we contemplated his glory, such glory as the Monogenes derived from the father. ¹⁵ it was of him that John bare witness, when he made this declaration, "this was he of whom I said, he that cometh after me, was before me; for he did indeed exist before me." ¹⁶ and of his Plenitude have we all received, even abundant grace. ¹⁷ the law indeed was delivered by Moses, but grace and truth was the dispensation of Jesus Christ. ¹⁸ no man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten son, who is intimate with the father, hath made him known. ¹⁹ This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, who he was. ²⁰ he own'd it, and did not deny it; but made this protestation, I am not the Christ. ²¹ art thou then Elias? said they; and he answer'd, I am not. art thou a prophet? and he answer'd, no. ²² said they to him, who then art thou? that we may give an answer to those that sent us: what sayst thou of thy self? ²³ "I am, said he, the voice of one crying in the wilderness, clear the way of the Lord," as said the prophet Esaias. ²⁴ Now the messengers were of the sect of the Pharisees, and they asked him, ²⁵ "why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elias, nor any other prophet?" ²⁶ John answered them, I baptize with water: but there is one among you, whom ye know not; he it is who coming after me, ²⁷ is preferred before me, the latchet of whose sandals I am not worthy to unloose. ²⁸ these things were transacted at Bethabara, near Jordan, where John used to baptize. ²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "behold the lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world." ³⁰ this is he of whom I said, after me cometh a man, who was before me: for he did indeed exist before me. ³¹ I knew him not: but therefore am I come baptizing with water, that he might be manifest to Israel. ³² and John testified, saying, I saw the spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. ³³ I had not known him: but he that sent me to baptize with water, had told me, "upon whom thou shalt see the spirit descending and remaining on him, the same is he who baptizeth with the holy spirit." ³⁴ this I saw, and testify'd, that he is the son of God. ³⁵ The next day after, John was again there with two of his disciples: ³⁶ and seeing Jesus as he walked, he said, "behold the lamb of God." ³⁷ the two disciples hearing this, followed Jesus. ³⁸ then Jesus turned about, and seeing them following, said, what do you seek? they answered him, rabbi, that is to say master, where do you dwell? ³⁹ come, said he, and see. so they went and saw where he lodged, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour. ⁴⁰ Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two disciples, who had followed Jesus, after they had heard what John had said. ⁴¹ the first he met was his own brother Simon, to whom he said, "we have found the Messias," that is to say, the Christ. ⁴² and he brought him to Jesus. and when Jesus beheld him, he said, "thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas," which is by interpretation, a stone. ⁴³ The day following Jesus having a mind to go into Galilee, met with Philip, and said to him, follow me. ⁴⁴ now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. ⁴⁵ Philip meeting with Nathanael, said to him, we have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. ⁴⁶ but Nathanael said to him, can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? come and see, said Philip. ⁴⁷ Jesus seeing Nathanael coming, said of him, there's a true Israelite, in whom is no guile. how do you know me? ⁴⁸ said Nathanael to him. before Philip called you, replied Jesus, I saw you under the fig-tree. ⁴⁹ Nathanael answered, rabbi, thou art the son of God, thou art the king of Israel. ⁵⁰ Jesus answered him, because thou believest what I said, that I saw thee under the fig-tree, thou shalt see greater things than these. ⁵¹ and he said to him, I declare unto you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending, and descending upon the son of man.

²³ a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel," that is to say, God our Saviour.

²⁸ I was sent by the father, and am come into the world: but now I leave the world, and am going to my father.

⁵ and now, O father, glorify me in heaven, with the glory which I had before the creation of the world.

²⁸ Thomas answered, and said to him, my Lord and my God!

⁵ who are the offspring of the patriarchs, and of whom as to the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

⁹ and display to all the world that mysterious dispensation, which from all past ages has been conceal'd in the secret purpose of God, who created all things:

⁶ who tho' he was the image of God, did not affect to appear with divine majesty, but divested himself thereof,

¹⁷ and by him all things consist.

¹⁶ the mystery of piety is the pillar and basts of truth; and certainly most extraordinary. God has appear'd in the flesh, been justified by the spirit, seen by angels, proclaim'd to the Gentiles, believ'd by the world, and assum'd into glory.

¹³ in expectation of that desirable happiness, the glorious appearance of the supreme God, and of our saviour Jesus Christ,

⁸ but to the son he saith, "God is thy throne for ever and ever; the sceptre of thy kingdom is a sceptre of equity. ⁹ thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy peers." ¹⁰ again, "thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thy hands. ¹¹ they shall perish, but thou shalt remain: and they all shall come to an end like an old garment; ¹² as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall never end." ¹³ But to which of the angels did he ever say, "sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?"

³ without father, without mother, without genealogy; his days have no beginning, and his life no end; but like the son of God, he was a perpetual priest.

⁸ Jesus Christ is always the same, yesterday, to-day, and for ever. be not then misled by artful, novel doctrines:

¹ Simon Peter the servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who equally share with us in the advantages of faith, thro' the veracity of our God, and of Jesus Christ.

¹ Concerning the Logos, the author of Life, we declare what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have consider'd, and what has been the object of our touch. ² for the life was manifested, we have seen it, we testify of it, and denounce unto you, that eternal life which was with the father, and was manifested unto us.

⁷ There are three witnesses in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three testify the same thing.

²⁰ We know that the son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding to know him that is true: and we are with him that is true, by his son Jesus Christ. "he is the true God, who is the author of eternal life."

² who publish'd the divine message, and gave his attestation to every thing that he saw concerning Jesus Christ.

⁸ I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, saith the Lord, who is, and who was, and who will be, the almighty.

¹¹ saying, "I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, what you shall see, write in a book, and send it to the seven churches which are in Asia; to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamos, to Thyatira, to Sardis, to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea."

¹⁷ as soon as I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead: but he laid his right hand upon me, and said, "Fear not; I am the first and the last:

⁸ And to the angel of the church in Smyrna, write, "THESE things saith the first and last, who was dead, and is alive."

¹⁴ And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans, write, "these things saith the AMEN, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

¹³ he had a vesture dipt in blood: and his name is called, the logos of God.

⁶ and he said to me, "it is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end: to him that is a-thirst I will freely give of the fountain of living water.

¹³ I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.

¹⁰ he was in the world, even the world that had been made by him, but the world knew him not.

¹⁷ But Jesus answered them, my father works without intermission, and so do I. ¹⁸ therefore the Jews were the more eager to kill him, because he had not only violated the sabbath, but likewise, because he had said that God was his proper father, making himself equal with God. ¹⁹ upon which Jesus said to them, verily, verily I say unto you, the son can do nothing of himself, except he sees the father do it: for whatever he doth, that the son does likewise.

⁶ yet to us there is but one God, the father, from whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

¹⁶ for by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are on earth, both visible and invisible, the thrones, and the sovereigntys, the principalitys, and the powers: all were created by him, and for him: he is before all things, ¹⁷ and by him all things consist.

² whom he hath constituted heir of all things, by whom also be made the world. ³ who being the radiation of his glory, and the imprest image of his substance, and governing all things by his powerful command, after having himself made expiation for our sins, sat down on the right hand of the divine majesty in the highest heavens.

¹⁰ again, "thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thy hands. ¹¹ they shall perish, but thou shalt remain: and they all shall come to an end like an old garment; ¹² as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall never end."

³ but as the architect is of much greater dignity than the house he has made; so the glory which Christ received was greater than that of Moses. ⁴ no house is without a builder; now he that built the whole house of Israel is God.

¹¹ "thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory, and honour, and power: for thou hast created all things, by thy WILL they subsist, and were created."

¹⁶ the people which sat in darkness, saw a great light: and to those who sat in the region and shadow of death, light is sprung up."

⁷⁸ through the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun has visited us from on high, ⁷⁹ to enlighten those, who are in darkness, and in the shadow of death, and to direct our steps into the ways of peace."

³² and the glory of thy people Israel."

⁸ he was not that Light, but was sent to testify of that light. ⁹ HE was the true Light who came into the world, to enlighten every man.

²¹ for as the father raiseth up the dead, and restores them to life: even so the son gives life to whom he will.

²⁶ for as the father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the son, to have life in himself;

¹² Jesus then having reassumed his discourse, said to them, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me, shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

⁵ while I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

²⁵ Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me shall live even though he were dead:

³⁵ Jesus answer'd them, yet a little while is the light with you: walk while ye have the light, lest darkness surprize you: for he that walketh in darkness, does not know whither he goes.

⁴⁶ I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me, might not abide in darkness.

⁶ Jesus said to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life: no man can come to the father, but by me.

²³ that he should be the first that was to rise from the dead: and that he should enlighten both the Jews and the Gentiles."

⁴⁵ and so it is written, the first man Adam was made an animating soul, the last Adam was made a vivifying spirit.

¹⁴ wherefore 'tis said, " awake thou that sleepest, arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light."

⁴ Christ is your life, and when he shall appear, then shall you also appear with him in glory.

² for the life was manifested, we have seen it, we testify of it, and denounce unto you, that eternal life which was with the father, and was manifested unto us.

⁵ This then is the commission we have from him, to declare unto you, that God is light, and in him there is no darkness. ⁶ if we say that we have communion with him, and walk in darkness, we lye, and do not act sincerely: ⁷ but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have society one with another, and the blood of his son Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin.

¹¹ Now what is testified, is this, that God has given to us eternal life: and this life is by his son.

¹ Then he shewed me a pure river of living water, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God, and of the lamb.

¹⁶ "I Jesus have sent my angel to testify these things to the churches. I am the shoot, the offspring of David, the splendid morning star.

¹⁹ and this is the subject of their condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men have loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ for every one that doth evil, hateth the light, and shunneth the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

³⁶ while ye have the light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. after having said these things, Jesus retir'd, and conceal'd himself from them. ³⁷ But though he had done so many miracles in their presence, yet they did not believe on him: ³⁸ so that the passage of Esaias the prophet was fulfilled, where he says, "Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? ³⁹ therefore they could not believe, according to what Esaias said in another place, "he hath blinded their eyes, ⁴⁰ and hardned their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them."

²⁸ As they did not seek the favour of God, by worshipping him, God gave them over to a depraved sense, to act unworthy of human nature;

¹⁴ but the animal man does not receive the effusions of the spirit of God; for they are foolishness to him; neither can he understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

¹ At that time appeared John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ² and saying, "Repent ye: for the kingdom of the Messiah draws nigh." ³ for it is of John the prophet Esaias spoke, when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths clear." ⁴ now John wore a coat made of camels hair, with a leathern girdle about his waist; and his food was locusts and wild hony. ⁵ Then the inhabitants of Jerusalem, of all Judea, and the whole country about Jordan, came to him: ⁶ and having confess'd their sins, they were baptized by him in Jordan. ⁷ but when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadduces come to his baptism, he said to them, "Ye brood of vipers, who has warned you to fly from the wrath to come? ⁸ Let your actions then show your repentance: ⁹ and don't pretend to say within your selves, We have Abraham for our father: for I tell you, that God is able out of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham: ¹⁰ the ax is already laid to the root of the trees: every tree then which does not produce good fruit, will be hewn down, and cast into the fire. ¹¹ I indeed baptize you with water to lead you to repentance; but he that cometh after me, is my superiour, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry: he shall baptize you with the effusion of the holy Ghost, in the appearance of fire:

¹⁰ for it is he that is meant in that passage, "behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee."

²⁵ the baptism of John, whence was it? was it a divine or a human Institution? and they reasoned thus with themselves, if we say, it was divine; he will say, then, why did ye not believe him?

¹ The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the son of God. ² It is written in the prophet, "behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. ³ The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." ⁴ accordingly, John baptized in the desart, and preach'd the baptism of repentance, for the remission of sins. ⁵ all Judea, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, went out to meet him, and having confess'd their sins, he baptized them in the river Jordan. ⁶ now John was clothed with camels hair, with a leathern girdle about his waist: and his food was locusts and wild honey. ⁷ among other things he said, there comes one after me, who is superiour to me, I am not worthy to stoop down and untie his shoes. ⁸ I indeed have baptized you with water, but he shall baptize you with the effusion of the holy Ghost.

¹³ but the angel said to Zacharias, don't be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard: and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, whom you shall name John:

¹⁵ he shall appear as a divine messenger. he shall drink neither wine, nor any other strong liquor: he shall be filled with the holy spirit, even from his infancy: ¹⁶ he shall convert many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. ¹⁷ and he shall march before him, in the spirit and power of Elias, to reconcile parents and children together, and the unruly to the practice of justice, that the people may be duly dispos'd to receive the Lord.

⁶¹ they answered her, there is not any of your family of that name. ⁶² they therefore ask'd his father to signify how he would have him call'd. ⁶³ then he made signs for a writing-book, and writ these words, "his name is John:" at which they were all surprized.

⁷⁶ and you, dear babe, you shall be the prophet of the most high: for you shall go before the Lord, in order to prepare his way,

² under the pontificate of Annas and Caiaphas, JOHN, the son of Zacharias, received his divine commission in the wilderness. ³ in pursuance of which, he went into all the country about Jordan, exhorting all to repent and be baptized, in order to obtain the remission of their sins. ⁴ as it is written in the book of the prophecies of Esaias, "the voice of one crying in the desart, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths clear. ⁵ every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be level'd: the crooked shall be made strait, and the rough ways shall be made smooth, ⁶ and all men shall behold the divine saviour." ⁷ he said therefore to the people that crowded to be baptized by him, ye brood of vipers, who has prompted you to flee from approaching wrath? ⁸ let your actions therefore show your repentance, and don't pretend to say within yourselves, "we have Abraham for our father:" for I tell you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. ⁹ the ax is already laid to the root of the trees: every tree then, which does not produce good fruit, shall be hewn down, and cast into the fire. ¹⁰ Upon which the people asked him, what then shall we do? ¹¹ he answer'd them, let him that hath two coats give one to him that hath none; and let him that has plenty of provisions act in like manner. ¹² the Publicans likewise came to be baptized, and said to him, master, how are we to act? ¹³ exact, said he, no more than what the law requires. ¹⁴ the soldiers too made the same demand, how are we to act? he answer'd them, injure no man either by violence or by fraud, and be content with your pay. ¹⁵ As the people were in suspence, every man imagining in his own mind that John might be the Messiah; ¹⁶ he address'd himself to them all, saying, I indeed baptize you with water; but there is one coming, who is superiour to me, whose shoes I am unworthy to untie: he shall baptize you with the holy spirit, under the appearance of fire. ¹⁷ and with the fan in his hand he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will lay up the wheat in his grainery: but the chaff he will burn with inextinguishable fire. ¹⁸ many other things he delivered to the people in his exhortations. ¹⁹ but having reproved Herod the tetrarch upon account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, and for all the mischiefs that Herod had done; ²⁰ to compleat all the rest, Herod confin'd John in prison.

²⁶ who thereupon went to John, and said, master, he that was with you beyond Jordan, to whom you bore testimony, he himself does now baptize likewise, and the people flock to him. ²⁷ but John made them this answer, a man can have no authority, but what he derives from heaven. ²⁸ you yourselves can bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but was only sent before him: ²⁹ the bridegroom is he that hath a right to the bride: as for the friend of the bridegroom, who is nigh his person and heareth him, he greatly rejoyces at the voice of the bridegroom: upon this account my joy is compleat. ³⁰ he must advance, ³¹ but I must decline. he that cometh from above, is above all: he that is from the earth, is earthly, and his language is likewise earthly: he that cometh from heaven is above all. ³² and what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; but his testimony doth no man receive. ³³ he that hath received his testimony, hath set his seal to this, that God is true. ³⁴ for he whom God hath sent, saith nothing but what is divine: for God hath given him the spirit without restriction. ³⁵ the father loveth the son, and hath given all things into his hand. ³⁶ he that believeth on the son, hath a right to everlasting life: and he that disobeys the son, shall not enjoy life; but be expos'd to divine wrath.

³³ you yourselves sent to John, and he bore witness to the truth. ³⁴ not that I need the testimony of men: but this I tell you, for your own security. ³⁵ he was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing to be entertain'd for a while with his light.

⁴ upon which Paul said, John indeed administer'd the baptism of repentance, but with this admonition, that they should believe in him, who was to come after, that is, in Jesus the Messias.

⁴ who wills that all men be saved, by embracing the truth.

¹¹ For the divine savour has display'd its salutary effects to all mankind:

⁹ the Lord does not delay the accomplishment of his promise, as some do imagine. but he waits with patience upon our account, as being unwilling that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

²⁰ he own'd it, and did not deny it; but made this protestation, I am not the Christ.

²³ but if your eye be bad, your whole body will be dark: if therefore that, which should be light to you, be dark; how great is that darkness?

⁴ the Life was produc'd in him, and the Life was the Light of men.

⁷ he came as a witness, to represent what he knew of the light, that by his means all might be convinc'd.

³² Jesus answer'd, I assure you, Moses did not give you the celestial bread; but my father gives you the true celestial bread.

¹² and the people were much divided about him: for some said, he is a good man: others said, not at all; but he seduces the people.

¹ I am the genuine vine, and my father is the vintager.

⁴ but you, my brethren, are too well inform'd to be surpriz'd by that day, as by a thief. ⁵ you inherit the advantages of meridian light: we are not involv'd in the obscurity of night. ⁶ therefore let us not sleep away our time like others, but be vigilant and temperate. ⁷ they that are sober take their rest in the night, whilst they that are sots, are drunk in the night:

⁸ If we say that we are without sin, we deceive ourselves, and have no regard to truth.

⁸ however, it is really, in effect, a new commandment I write unto you, with respect to you: because the darkness is past, and things now appear in their true light.

²⁷ my father has instructed me in every thing: and no one knoweth the son, except the father: nor does any one know the father, except the son, and he to whom the son is pleased to reveal him."

⁵ and the Light shineth in darkness, but the darkness did not receive it.

¹⁷ But Jesus answered them, my father works without intermission, and so do I.

²⁵ O righteous father, the world hath not known thee; but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.

¹⁷ nevertheless he sufficiently display'd himself by his beneficence to mankind, in giving us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, replenishing our hearts with food and gladness."

²⁴ the GOD who made the world and every thing therein, and is the Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples erected by men: ²⁵ he receives no service from their officiousness: he is self-sufficient: it is he that gives to all their life and breath and every thing they have. ²⁶ he he has deduced all mankind from one parent, to inhabit the surface of the whole earth, having pre-establish'd the appointed periods, and the boundarys of their dominions: ²⁷ by which they might enquire, and by due reflection investigate the supreme being, although he be not far from every one of us: for in him we live,

²¹ for whereas the world, with all their learning, did not distinguish the characters of his divine wisdom, in his works, it pleased God to save those who believe, by preaching, which they counted folly.

⁸ which none of the rulers of this age understood: for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

³ 'Tis by faith we learn that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the visible world was not made out of any thing that did appear.

¹ Consider what proof the father has given us of his love, in allowing us to be called the sons of God: therefore the world does not know us, because it knew him not.

²⁴ but he answered, my commission was only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

¹⁴ but he being hated by the citizens, after he was gone, they sent a deputation to court, to make this protest, "we will not have him for our king."

¹³ upon which the master of the vineyard said, what shall I do? I will send my beloved son: perhaps his presence will engage their respect. ¹⁴ but when the husbandmen saw him, they said to one another, this is the heir: come, let us kill him, that the inheritance may be our own. ¹⁵ so they kill'd him, and threw him out of the vineyard. what punishment now will the master inflict upon them?

³² and what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; but his testimony doth no man receive.

²⁵ ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, when he said to Abraham, "all the families of the earth shall be blessed in your posterity." ²⁶ it is to you that God first of all sent his son Jesus, having raised him up to bless you, provided you all renounce your iniquities.

⁵¹ stubborn people, whose hearts and ears like the uncircumcised, are always averse to the holy spirit: as your fathers did, so do ye. ⁵² was there ever any prophet whom your fathers did not persecute? have they not slain those who predicted the coming of that just person whom you have so lately betrayed and murder'd?

²⁶ It is to you, my brethren, who are the children of Abraham, and to all who fear God among you, that this salutary news is sent.

⁴⁶ but Paul and Barnabas told them boldly, you indeed were the first, to whom the word of God was to be preach'd: but since you reject it, and judge your own selves unworthy of eternal life, be assur'd, we shall make the same offer to the Gentiles:

¹ I call Christ, and the holy spirit to witness with my conscience, that I speak the truth without guile, when I say,

⁸ for I tell you, that Jesus Christ was a minister to the Jews, to manifest the veracity of God in fulfilling the promises made to the fathers:

⁴ God sent forth his own son born of a woman, and subject to the law, to redeem those,

⁴⁰ He that receives you, receives me; and he that receives me, receives him that sent me.

²¹ and in his name shall the Gentiles trust."

⁵ and whoever shall receive one that is like such a child, in my name, receiveth me.

²³ Now whilst he was in Jerusalem at the feast of the passover, many believed in him when they saw the miracles which he did.

¹⁸ he that believeth on him, shall not be condemned: but he that believeth not, is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the only begotten son of God.

⁵² and not for that nation only, but likewise to reassemble the dispersed children of God into one body.

³¹ but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Messias, the son of God, and that believing ye might have life through his name.

¹⁶ it is the faith which we have in him, that has procured strength to this man whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him, hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

¹⁴ as many as are actuated by the spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

¹⁷ wherefore come out from among them, be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, ¹⁸ I will be a father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."

²⁶ for you are all the sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

⁶ and because ye are sons, God has sent forth the spirit of his son into your hearts, crying Abba, that is, father;

⁶ continue therefore to follow the doctrine of our Lord Jesus Christ, as you have receiv'd it:

⁴ by which we have receiv'd the most inestimable promises, that thereby you might become partakers of the divine perfections, after having escap'd from the corruption of a sensual world.

²³ now this is his commandment, that we believe in his son Jesus Christ, and that we love one another, as he commanded us.

¹² he that receives the son, is intitled to life; and he that does not receive the son of God, has no title to life. ¹³ these things have I written to you, that you may know that you have eternal life, by your believing on the name of the son of God.

⁹ and don't pretend to say within your selves, We have Abraham for our father: for I tell you, that God is able out of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham:

³ Jesus answered him, I declare unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

⁵ Jesus answered, I tell thee, except a man be renewed by the spiritual baptism, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. ⁶ the cleansing of the body is only external, but the purification of the spirit is spiritual. ⁷ be not surprized that I said to thee, you must be born again. ⁸ the wind bloweth where it listeth, and you hear the sound thereof, but cannot tell whence it comes, or whither it goes: such is the change in every one that is renewed by the spirit.

³³ they answered him, we are Abraham's offspring, and were never slaves to any man: why then do you say, "ye shall be made free?" ³⁴ Jesus answered them, I declare unto you, whosoever committeth sin, is a slave to sin. ³⁵ a slave has no right to be in the house for life: but the son is settled there. ³⁶ if the son therefore shall make you free, you will be free indeed. ³⁷ I know you are Abraham's offspring; but ye seek to kill me, because my doctrine doth not penetrate into you. ³⁸ what I have learnt from my father, that I tell: and what you have learnt from your father, that you do. ³⁹ they answered him, Abraham is our father. if you were Abraham's children, said Jesus, you would act like Abraham. ⁴⁰ but now ye seek to kill me, the man who has told you the truth, such as I have learnt it of God: Abraham did not act thus. ⁴¹ your actions are like your father. at this they reply'd, we are no bastards; we have but one father, even God.

¹ I call Christ, and the holy spirit to witness with my conscience, that I speak the truth without guile, when I say, ² that I have great heaviness, and continual sorrow in my heart. ³ for I could wish to be as one anathematiz'd from the christian church for my brethren, who are of the same race as my self, ⁴ who are Israelites; who had the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the law, the form of divine worship, and the promises; ⁵ who are the offspring of the patriarchs, and of whom as to the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

⁷ neither are they who are the race of Abraham, all children: but 'tis said, "in Isaac shall thy posterity be called." ⁸ that is, the children by natural descent are not thereby the children of God: but the children of the promise are alone considered as his posterity. ⁹ for the words of the promise run thus, "at this time I will come, and Sara shall have a son." ¹⁰ this appears too from the case of Rebecca, who conceived twins by our father Isaac. ¹¹ for before they were born, and had done neither good or evil, that the distinction which God had purposed to make might appear to be, not in consideration of their actions, but of his own free call, ¹² it was said to her, "the elder shall serve the younger." ¹³ as it is written, "Jacob have I loved, but Esau I have discarded." ¹⁴ What do we say then? is there injustice in God? ¹⁵ God forbid. for he saith to Moses, "I will show favour to whom I will show favour, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion." ¹⁶ so that this is a matter not dependent on him that wills or runs, but on God, who shews mercy.

¹ Brethren, my hearty desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they may be saved. ² for I bear them witness, that they have a zeal for God, but not guided by true knowledge. ³ because being ignorant of the justice which is of God, and going about to establish a justification of their own, they have not submitted themselves to that which is of God.

⁶ I have planted, Apollos watered: but God gave the increase.

¹³ for it is God that influences your desires and endeavours, out of his benevolence to you.

⁵ he saved us not in consideration of any virtuous actions which we had done, but out of his meer mercy, by the baptism of regeneration, he form'd us anew, by the plentiful effusion of the holy spirit,

¹⁸ 'tis he that has voluntarily renew'd us by the oracles of truth, that we might be the first converts of the new creation.

³ Blessed be the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy has regenerated us, and given us by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the expectation of immortal life,

²³ since your regeneration is not owing to any corruptible principles, but to the unchangeable word of the immortal God.

² which is without any mixture, and will make you thrive. Since you have tasted how good the Lord is,

²⁸ adhere to that, my dear children, that when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. ²⁹ since you know that God is the source of virtue, you know that every one who has virtue, derives it from him.

⁹ whosoever is born of God, does not commit sin; for the divine principle remaineth in him: he will not sin, because he is born of God.

⁷ Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth, is born of God, and knoweth God.

¹ Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Messiah, is born of God: and every one that loves the father, will likewise be affected with love to his son.

⁴ for he that is a true christian, overcomes the world: by obtaining faith, we have gain'd a victory over the world.

¹⁸ we know that a true christian will not commit such a sin, for he that is the child of God keeps upon his guard, so that the wicked spirit does not approach him.

¹⁶ Jacob father of Joseph the husband of Mary of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

²⁰ but while he was revolving this in his mind, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, the off-spring of David, don't make any difficulty of taking Mary for thy wife: for her pregnancy is from the holy Spirit. ²¹ and she shall be deliver'd of a son, to whom you shall give the name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. ²² now by these events, that divine prediction of the Prophet had its full accomplishment, when he said, "Behold, ²³ a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel," that is to say, God our Saviour.

¹ After six days, Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, in private to the top of a high mountain. ² and was transfigured before them; his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. ³ and presently they saw Moses and Elias conversing with him. ⁴ then Peter address'd himself to Jesus, Lord, said he, it is good for us to stay here: if you please, let us make three tabernacles here; one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elias. ⁵ while he was speaking, a bright cloud surrounded them: and suddenly a voice broke out of the cloud, saying, "this is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him."

³¹ you shall be now pregnant, and be delivered of a son, whom you shall name JESUS. ³² he shall be great, he shall be the son of the most high. the Lord God shall give him the throne of his father David. ³³ he shall reign over the house of Jacob, and of his kingdom there shall be no end." ³⁴ Then said Mary to the angel, what shall this be without any intercourse with man? ³⁵ the angel answered her, "the holy spirit shall descend upon thee, and the power of the most high shall over-shadow thee: wherefore thy holy offspring shall be called the son of God.

⁷ and being brought to bed of her first born, she swathed him, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

¹¹ for the Lord Messiah your saviour is this day born, in the city of David:

³² while Peter, and the others with him, were overwhelm'd with sleep: but when they wak'd, they observed his glory, and the two persons present with him,

¹ In the beginning was the Logos, and the Logos was with God, and the Logos was God.

¹⁶ and of his Plenitude have we all received, even abundant grace. ¹⁷ the law indeed was delivered by Moses, but grace and truth was the dispensation of Jesus Christ. ¹⁸ no man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten son, who is intimate with the father, hath made him known.

¹¹ thus was the first miracle of Jesus wrought at Cana in Galilee, by which he displayed his power; and his disciples believed on him.

¹⁶ for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life.

⁵¹ I am the living bread, that is come down from heaven: whosoever shall eat of this bread, shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give, is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, did I not tell you, that if you would believe, you should see the glory of God?

⁴⁰ and hardned their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them." ⁴¹ these things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

⁹ Jesus said to him, have I been with you so long, and don't you know me yet? Philip, he that hath seen me, hath seen the father; why then do you say, shew us the father?

²² and the glory which thou gavest me, I have given them: that they may be one, even as we are one.

³³ agreeable to what is written in the first psalm, "thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee."

³ with relation to his son Jesus Christ our Lord, who was of the lineage of David as to his body, ⁴ but as to his holy spirit miraculously declared to be the son of God, by his resurrection from the dead:

³ God having sent his own son invested with a body like that of sinful men, as a sacrifice for sin, thereby destroyed its power; which the law could not effect, human nature being in such a corrupted state.

⁴⁷ the first man was formed from the dust of the earth: the second man was from heaven.

⁴ to those unbelievers, whose minds the God of this world has so blinded, that the glorious lustre of the gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, does not enlighten them. ⁵ for we preach not our selves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, professing our selves your servants for his sake. ⁶ for God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to enlighten others in the knowledge of the glory of God, which shines in the person of Jesus Christ.

⁹ but he said to me, "my favour is sufficient for thee: for my strength is shown to be perfect by thy weakness." with pleasure therefore will I glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may be seen to dwell in me.

⁸ upon me, who am the meanest of all christians, is this favour bestowed, that I should proclaim to the Gentiles the undiscoverable advantages by Christ;

¹⁸ Be ye rooted and grounded in social virtue, that you may be able to comprehend with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height of this mystery: ¹⁹ and be sensible of his exceeding love, in giving you the knowledge of Christ, that you may be filled with all the supplies of divine bounty.

⁶ who tho' he was the image of God, did not affect to appear with divine majesty, but divested himself thereof, ⁷ by assuming the form of a servant: being made in the likeness of men, ⁸ and his whole exterior showing nothing more than a meer man, he abased himself, and carried his submission so far as to die, even the death of the cross.

¹⁹ for it seemed good to the father to inhabit the whole body of the church by Christ:

³ in whom are reserv'd all the treasures of wd om and knowledge.

⁹ for in him all divine plenitude does substantially reside.

¹⁴ but the favour of our Lord display'd itself by that faith and charity, which was wrought in me by Jesus Christ. ¹⁵ it is a proposition worthy to be believ'd, and be embrac'd by all, that Jesus Christ is come into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the greatest. ¹⁶ however I obtained mercy, that Jesus Christ might demonstrate the greatness of his clemency, by making me an eminent instance of it to those who should hereafter believe in him, in order to eternal life.

³ who being the radiation of his glory, and the imprest image of his substance, and governing all things by his powerful command, after having himself made expiation for our sins, sat down on the right hand of the divine majesty in the highest heavens.

⁵ for to which of the angels did he ever say, " thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee? and again, I will be his father, and he shall be my son?

¹¹ for both he that sanctifieth, and they who are sanctified, are all deriv'd from one: for which cause he is not asham'd to call them brethren, saying,

¹⁴ Since then the children were made subject to a state of mortality, so he himself likewise was subject to the same condition: that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; ¹⁵ and deliver them who thro' fear of death were all their life-time in a state of slavery. ¹⁶ for he is not the deliverer of angels; but the deliverer of Abraham's posterity. ¹⁷ whence it was necessary he should be in all things like his brethren; that he might be a merciful high priest, and faithfully discharge the divine office of expiating the sins of the people.

⁵ Wherefore Christ himself did not assume the character of an high priest; but it was confirm'd by him that said, "thou art my son, to-day have I begotten thee."

⁵ wherefore at his appearing in publick, he saith, "sacrifice and offering thou wouldst not, but a body hast thou prepared me:

⁴ which however rejected it is by men, is the precious stone, which God has chosen: and ⁵ you your selves are as so many living stones, you are the edifice, the spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, agreeable to God by Jesus Christ. ⁶ wherefore it is said in the scripture, I lay in Sion the principal stone of the angle, a choice one of great value: he that ⁷ trusts thereon shall not be confounded. it will prove an honour to you, who believe; but to the incredulous, the same stone, which is the chief of the angle,

¹⁶ for, the information we gave you of the powerful advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, did not proceed from any artfully contriv'd fables, we our selves having been spectators of his majesty. ¹⁷ for he received this honourable and glorious testimony from his father, when the voice broke out from the magnificent splendor, in these words, "this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased."

² by this you may distinguish the spirit of God: "every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is from God. ³ and every spirit that does not own that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is not from God." this is that anti-christian spirit which you have heard was to come, and even now it appears in the world.

⁹ by this was the love of God displayed towards us, in that God sent his only begotten son into the world, that we might live thro' him.

¹⁴ and we have seen, and do testify, that the father hath sent the son to be the saviour of the world.

⁷ For there are many impostors started up in the world, who will not own that Jesus Christ was incarnate. such a one is an impostor and an anti-christ.

³ then I heard a great voice out of heaven, saying, "behold, the tabernacle of God is with men: he will dwell with them, they shall be his people, God himself shall be with them, as their God.

¹¹ I indeed baptize you with water to lead you to repentance; but he that cometh after me, is my superiour, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry: he shall baptize you with the effusion of the holy Ghost, in the appearance of fire:

¹³ Then went Jesus from Galilee to Jordan to be baptized by John. ¹⁴ but John opposed him, I have need, said he, to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? ¹⁵ and Jesus answer'd, Let it be so for the present, for it becometh us to do whatever is right. then John consented. ¹⁶ and when Jesus was baptized, he came out of the water: and immediately the heavens seem'd to be parted asunder before him, and he saw the Spirit ¹⁷ of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: at the same time a voice was heard from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

⁷ among other things he said, there comes one after me, who is superiour to me, I am not worthy to stoop down and untie his shoes.

¹⁶ he address'd himself to them all, saying, I indeed baptize you with water; but there is one coming, who is superiour to me, whose shoes I am unworthy to untie: he shall baptize you with the holy spirit, under the appearance of fire.

¹ In the beginning was the Logos, and the Logos was with God, and the Logos was God. ² the same was in the beginning with God.

⁷ he came as a witness, to represent what he knew of the light, that by his means all might be convinc'd. ⁸ he was not that Light, but was sent to testify of that light.

²⁷ is preferred before me, the latchet of whose sandals I am not worthy to unloose.

²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "behold the lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world." ³⁰ this is he of whom I said, after me cometh a man, who was before me: for he did indeed exist before me. ³¹ I knew him not: but therefore am I come baptizing with water, that he might be manifest to Israel.

³³ you yourselves sent to John, and he bore witness to the truth. ³⁴ not that I need the testimony of men: but this I tell you, for your own security. ³⁵ he was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing to be entertain'd for a while with his light. ³⁶ but I have a better witness than that of John: for the works which my father hath order'd me to finish, those very works that I do, bear me witness, that 'tis the father who sent me.

⁵⁸ Jesus said to them, verily, verily I say unto you, before Abraham was I AM.

⁶ who tho' he was the image of God, did not affect to appear with divine majesty, but divested himself thereof, ⁷ by assuming the form of a servant: being made in the likeness of men,

¹⁷ as soon as I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead: but he laid his right hand upon me, and said, "Fear not; I am the first and the last: ¹⁸ I am he that liveth; I was dead; but now you see I am alive for all eternity, amen; and I have the keys of the grave, and of death."

¹⁴ but John opposed him, I have need, said he, to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?

¹² for to him that uses what he has, shall be given, and he shall have abundantly: but from him that uses it not, shall be taken away, even what he hath.

¹⁵ for I will make you speak with such strength of argument, as all your adversaries shall not be able to contradict or withstand.

³⁴ for he whom God hath sent, saith nothing but what is divine: for God hath given him the spirit without restriction.

¹ I am the genuine vine, and my father is the vintager. ² every branch in me that beareth not fruit, he takes away: as for the branch that bears fruit, he prunes it clean, to make it more fruitful. ³ you are already clean by the instructions I have given you. ⁴ be attach'd to me, and I shall be so to you. as the branch cannot bear fruit of it self, except it be attach'd to the vine: so neither can you, except you continue attach'd to me. ⁵ I am the vine, you are the branches: he that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for independent of me ye can do nothing.

¹² which Peter observing, thus addressed them, ye men of Israel, why are ye so surprized at this event? or why do you look so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or piety, we had caus'd this man to walk? ¹³ the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and renounced in opposition to Pilate, who was determined to let him go. ¹⁴ but ye renounced him that was holy and just; you interceeded for the life of a murderer, ¹⁵ but killed the prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses. ¹⁶ it is the faith which we have in him, that has procured strength to this man whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him, hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

² who has given us access by faith to that degree of favour, we are in, by which we triumph in the hopes of divine glory.

¹⁷ for tho' death reigned thro' the single offence of one, they who receive the most valuable favour, even the gift of righteousness, shall much more easily reign by the life of one, even Jesus Christ.

²⁰ the law was introduc'd, that the greatness of the fall might fully appear; but the more sin display'd its enormity, the divine favour was so much the more transcendent.

⁹ you are not in such a state, but in a spiritual one, provided the divine spirit dwell in you. now if any man have not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

⁴ I continually give thanks to God on your behalf, for the favour he has bestowed on you thro' Jesus Christ; ⁵ in your being enriched by him in every gift, with all that light and knowledge, ⁶ to display the glory of his grace, which has render'd us acceptable by his beloved son: ⁷ who has by his blood obtained for us the redemption, even the forgiveness of our sins, according to the riches of his grace, ⁸ out of the over-flowing treasures of his comprehensive wisdom and contrivance.

²³ which is his body, a work compleatly finished in all its parts.

⁵ did raise us all, who were in that deadly state of sin, to life by Christ, for by grace ye are saved: ⁶ he hath raised us up together, and made us partakers of his heavenly kingdom. ⁷ that in the ages to come, he might shew the immense riches of his gracious kindness towards us, through Christ Jesus. ⁸ for by grace are ye saved, thro' faith (and that not from us: ⁹ it is the gift of God) but not by works, so that no man can boast: ¹⁰ for he hath made us a-new, and form'd us by Christ Jesus to do good works, for which God had before prepared us, that we might live in them.

¹⁹ and be sensible of his exceeding love, in giving you the knowledge of Christ, that you may be filled with all the supplies of divine bounty.

⁷ but to every one of us a different charge is given, according to the distribution which Christ has made; ⁸ wherefore 'tis said, " when he ascended up on high, he made a number of captives, and gave gifts to men." ⁹ now his having ascended, what does it mean, but that he had descended into the lower parts of the earth? ¹⁰ he that descended, is the same too that ascended far above all heavens, to perfect all things. ¹¹ It is he then that made some, apostles: some, prophets: some, evangelists: and others, pastors, and teachers: ¹² thus fitly qualifying his servants for their respective offices, in order to build up the body of Christ: ¹³ till being united in a perfect belief, and acknowledgment of the son of God, we grow up to that full state of maturity required by Christ:

⁹ for in him all divine plenitude does substantially reside. ¹⁰ and ye are filled by him, who is the chief of all principality and power:

² to sanctify them by his spirit, that by their obedience they might be sprinkled with the blood of Jesus Christ. may the divine savour make you continually prosper.

¹¹ when the spirit of Christ inform'd the minds of the prophets of his future sufferings, and of the glorious consequences, they were solicitous to know the circumstances of the times pointed at:

⁵⁴ he has taken Israel his servant into his protection, in pursuance of the mercy, ⁵⁵ which he promised to our forefathers, to Abraham, and to his posterity for ever."

⁶⁸ "blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he hath regarded and wrought a deliverance for his people: ⁶⁹ he hath rais'd up a powerful saviour for us, in the family of his servant David, ⁷⁰ according to the antient promise he made by the mouth of the holy prophets, ⁷¹ to deliver us from our enemies, and from the power of all that hate us: ⁷² to show regard to our forefathers, in performing his holy covenant, ⁷³ the oath which he made to our father Abraham, to grant us this favour, ⁷⁴ that we should be delivered from the power of our enemies, and serve him with security, ⁷⁵ in the sincere practice of holiness and justice, all our days. ⁷⁶ and you, dear babe, you shall be the prophet of the most high: for you shall go before the Lord, in order to prepare his way, ⁷⁷ by acquainting his people how they may be saved by the remission of their sins,

⁴⁵ don't imagine that I shall accuse you to my father: even Moses himself in whom you confide, will be your accuser.

¹⁹ was it not Moses who gave you the law, and yet none of you observe that law?

³² and the truth shall make you free.

²⁹ we know that God commission'd Moses: as for this fellow, we don't know who sent him.

³⁸ 'twas he that was in the assembly with our fathers in the wilderness, and with the angel that spoke to him on mount Sina: and delivered the oracles to him by word of mouth for our use.

³⁴ and to show that he rais'd him from the dead, never more to return to corruption, he said thus, "I will faithfully perform the promises, which I made to David." ³⁵ wherefore in another place he says, "thou shalt not suffer thy holy one to see corruption." ³⁶ for David, after he had serv'd in his time the designs of providence, died and was buryed with his fathers, and was subject to corruption. ³⁷ but he, whom God hath raised, was not subject to corruption. ³⁸ know then, my brethren, it is by him, that the remission of sins is offer'd to you: ³⁹ by him, every one who believes, is purged from all that guilt, for which the law of Moses had made no such provision.

²³ Having therefore set him a day, they came in great numbers to his lodgings; where he explain'd and confirm'd the reality of the gospel-dispensation, from morning to night, enforcing what the writings of Moses and the prophets had affirm'd concerning Jesus.

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law: that every one may be silenc'd, and all the world plead guilty before God. ²⁰ for by the observation of the law no one shall be justified in his sight, since it is the law that takes cognizance of sin. ²¹ but the divine justification certified by the law and the prophets, is now clearly proposed independently of the law: ²² that divine justification, which by faith in Jesus Christ is extended to all, that believe; for there is no distinction: ²³ for all having sinned, all have forfeited eternal glory: ²⁴ being justified by his unmerited favour through the redemption that is by Jesus Christ: ²⁵ whom God had ordained, thro' faith, to be the propitiatory victim by his blood, for the manifestation of his goodness, by patiently passing over their past transgressions: to manifest, ²⁶ I say, his goodness at this time: that he might appear to be just, and the justifier of him who believes in Jesus.

²⁰ the law was introduc'd, that the greatness of the fall might fully appear; but the more sin display'd its enormity, the divine favour was so much the more transcendent. ²¹ that as sin prevailed unto death, even so might the divine favour prevail by righteousness unto eternal life, thro' Jesus Christ our Lord.

¹⁴ for then sin shall have no dominion over you: because you are not under the legal, but under the gospel dispensation.

⁸ for I tell you, that Jesus Christ was a minister to the Jews, to manifest the veracity of God in fulfilling the promises made to the fathers: ⁹ and you Gentiles ought to glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, "for this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name ." ¹⁰ and again the scripture saith, "rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people." ¹¹ and elsewhere, praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles, and laud him, all ye people." ¹² besides Esaias saith, "there shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles hope."

²⁰ for all the promises of God do center in him, and are verifyed by him to the glory of God by our preaching.

⁷ now if the law engraven on stone, the letter of whose sanction is death, was delivered with such glory, that the children of Israel could not steadily behold the face of Moses, for the glory of his countenance, tho' it was transient; ⁸ shall not the ministration of the spirit be more glorious? ⁹ for if the ministration of condemnation was illustrious, the ministration of righteousness will be much more glorious. ¹⁰ since that which distinguished the first had no glory, when compared to that of the other, which far excell'd it.

¹⁰ but they that rest themselves upon the works of the law, are obnoxious to the curse: for it is written, " cursed is every one, who continueth not in all things, which are written in the book of the law, to do them:" ¹¹ but that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, is evident: for, " the just shall live by faith." ¹² now the law does not justify by FAITH, but says, "he that DOES these things shall live by them." ¹³ Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us. (for it is written, " cursed is every one, that hangeth upon a tree.")

¹⁷ this therefore I say, that the law, which was not till four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul the promise, that was ratified before by God, so as to set the promise afoot.

⁵ besides Moses throughout his whole administration acted in quality of a servant, representing to the people what he was order'd to say. ⁶ but Christ govern'd his own house in quality of son and heir, and 'tis we that are his house, provided we stedfastly persevere unto the end in the publick profession of that hope, in virtue of which we glory.

⁸ nor for that reproach, which was made to our fathers, where 'tis said, "behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new alliance with the house of Israel, and with the house of Juda: ⁹ not according to the alliance that I made with their fathers, when I took them by the hand, to lead them out of the land of Egypt; for they have not kept my alliance, wherefore I have rejected them, saith the Lord. ¹⁰ but this is the alliance that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord: I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: I will be their God, and they shall be my people. ¹¹ they shall no longer instruct every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. ¹² for I will pardon their iniquity, and their sins and their trangressions will I remember no more."

²² and indeed according to the law almost every thing is purified with blood, without the effusion of which, there is no remission of sins.

⁴ And indeed it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats, should take away the guilt of sin. ⁵ wherefore at his appearing in publick, he saith, "sacrifice and offering thou wouldst not, but a body hast thou prepared me: ⁶ in burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure: ⁷ then said I, lo I come, as in the volume of the book it is written of me, to do thy will, O God." ⁸ after having said, "victims, oblations, holocausts, and sacrifice for sin, thou wouldst not, neither hadst pleasure therein," tho' they are all prescrib'd by the law; ⁹ he immediately adds, "lo, I come to do thy WILL, O God." he abolishes the first to establish the second: ¹⁰ in consequence of which WILL we are sanctified by the oblation which Jesus Christ has made once for all of his own body.

³⁹ Tho' these were all celebrated for their faith, they did not receive the reward that was promised: ⁴⁰ because God out of his distinguishing kindness to us, would not let them arrive before us to the enjoyment of perfect felicity.

⁸ when he had taken the book, the four animals, and the four and twenty elders fell down before the lamb, every one of them having harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of the saints. ⁹ and they sung a new song, saying, "thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood, out of every tribe, and language, and people, and nation; ¹⁰ and hast made us kings and priests unto our God: and we shall reign on the earth."

⁹ After this I beheld, and there was a great multitude, which no man could number, of every nation, tribe, people, and language, who stood before the throne, and before the lamb cloathed in white robes, having palms in their hands. ¹⁰ They cried with a loud voice, "salvation from our God who sits upon the throne, and unto the lamb.' ¹¹ and all the angels who stood round about the throne, and about the elders, and the four animals fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, saying, amen: ¹² praise, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might be to our God for ever and ever. amen. ¹³ Then one of the elders spake, and said to me, who are those that are arrayed in white robes? and whence do they come? ¹⁴ my Lord, answer'd I, you can tell. and he said to me, these are they who came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the lamb. ¹⁵ therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall cover them, as a pavillion. ¹⁶ they shall no more suffer hunger or thirst, neither shall the sun dart on them, nor any heat molest them. ¹⁷ for the lamb who is in the midst before the throne, shall feed them, and shall lead them to living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

²² the management of every thing is committed to me by my father: no one knows what character the son is invested with, except the father; nor who the father is, except the son, and he to whom the son shall please to reveal it.

²² at length the beggar died: and was conveyed by the angels to Abraham's bower. the rich man died too, and was buried. ²³ and being in the infernal regions of torments, he lift up his eyes, and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bower.

¹⁶ for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁷ for God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. ¹⁸ he that believeth on him, shall not be condemned: but he that believeth not, is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the only begotten son of God.

⁴⁶ not that any man hath seen the father, except him who is come from God, he hath seen the father.

⁴¹ these things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

²³ now the favourite disciple of Jesus sat next to him at table.

⁶ I have displayed thy name among those whom you have chosen out of the world for me: thine they were, and you gave them me; and they have kept thy word.

²⁶ to them I have declared thy name, and will declare it: that thou mayst love them as thou hast loved me, and I have loved them."

¹⁵ he is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of the whole creation.

¹⁷ to the king of the world, the immortal, invisible, and the only God be honour and glory to endless ages. amen.

¹⁶ who alone is essentially immortal, dwelling in that inaccessible light, which no mortal ever saw, or can see: to whom belongs everlasting honour and empire. amen.

¹² no man hath ever seen God. if we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and our love for him is then sincere.

²⁰ if a man says he loves God, and yet hates his brother, he is a lyar: for he that does not love his brother, who is before his eyes, how can he love God who is invisible?

²³ When he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the magistrates came to him as he was teaching, and said, by what authority dost thou these things? and who gave thee this authority? ²⁴ and Jesus answered them, let me ask you one question, if ye answer me that, I shall likewise satisfy you by what authority I do these things. ²⁵ the baptism of John, whence was it? was it a divine or a human Institution? and they reasoned thus with themselves, if we say, it was divine; he will say, then, why did ye not believe him? ²⁶ but if we say, it was merely human, we are obnoxious to the people; for all hold John as a prophet. ²⁷ so they made answer, we cannot tell. and Jesus said, neither shall I tell you, by what authority I do these things. ²⁸ But what do you think of this? a man had two sons, and coming to the first, he said, son, go, work to-day in my vineyard. ²⁹ I won't, said he: but afterward be chang'd his mind, and went. ³⁰ then he came to the other, and bid him do the same. and he answered, yes, sir; but went not. ³¹ which of the two obey'd his father? they said, the first. Jesus reply'd, I declare to you, that the publicans and licentious people enter into the gospel kingdom before you. ³² for John instructed you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the licentious believed him. and tho' you saw that, you did not yet repent, so as to believe him.

¹⁵ As the people were in suspence, every man imagining in his own mind that John might be the Messiah; ¹⁶ he address'd himself to them all, saying, I indeed baptize you with water; but there is one coming, who is superiour to me, whose shoes I am unworthy to untie: he shall baptize you with the holy spirit, under the appearance of fire. ¹⁷ and with the fan in his hand he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will lay up the wheat in his grainery: but the chaff he will burn with inextinguishable fire. ¹⁸ many other things he delivered to the people in his exhortations.

¹⁸ whereupon the Jews said, what miracle can you show to justify your behaviour?

¹⁰ the Jews said to him that was cured, it is the sabbath-day; it is not lawful for you to carry your bed.

⁴¹ The Jews then murmured against him, for having said, "I am the bread which came down from heaven."

⁵² Upon this the Jews disputed among themselves, saying, how can this man give us his flesh to eat?

²⁴ the Jews came about him, and said, how long will you keep us in suspense? if you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.

²⁵ and in the discharge of his mission, he said, "who do you think I am? I am not the Messias. but there comes another after me, whose shoes I am not worthy to untie."

¹¹ I indeed baptize you with water to lead you to repentance; but he that cometh after me, is my superiour, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry: he shall baptize you with the effusion of the holy Ghost, in the appearance of fire: ¹² and with the fan in his hand, he will throughly cleanse his floor, and gather the wheat into his grainery, but the chaff will he burn with unquenchable fire."

⁹ or did you go to see a prophet? yes, and be assured, one superiour to a prophet. ¹⁰ for it is he that is meant in that passage, "behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee." ¹¹ I declare unto you, among the whole race of prophets, there never appear'd a greater than John the Baptist: (notwithstanding, he that is least in the kingdom of the

¹⁴ and if ye will believe me, he is the Elias that was to come.

¹⁴ they replied, some think you are John the Baptist, some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets.

¹⁰ why then do the Scribes say, that Elias must first come? ¹¹ Jesus answered, 'tis true, Elias was to come first and set all things right. ¹² but I tell you, that Elias is already come, tho' they knew him not, but treated him in an arbitrary manner; with such usage as the son of man shall likewise suffer at their hands.

¹⁷ and he shall march before him, in the spirit and power of Elias, to reconcile parents and children together, and the unruly to the practice of justice, that the people may be duly dispos'd to receive the Lord.

²⁵ "why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ, nor Elias, nor any other prophet?"

⁴⁰ many of the people therefore, who heard this discourse, said, this man is certainly a prophet.

³ for it is of John the prophet Esaias spoke, when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths clear."

³ The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight."

⁴ as it is written in the book of the prophecies of Esaias, "the voice of one crying in the desart, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths clear. ⁵ every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be level'd: the crooked shall be made strait, and the rough ways shall be made smooth, ⁶ and all men shall behold the divine saviour."

¹³ Wo unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, who prey upon the estates of widows, under the pretext of making long prayers; therefore ye shall be punish'd with the greater severity. ¹⁴ wo unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, who shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye not only refuse to go in your selves, but hinder those that would. ¹⁵ wo unto you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, who ransack sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is gain'd, ye make him deserve Gehenna much more than your selves.

²⁶ thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first the inside of the cup and plate, that the outside may be likewise clean.

³⁰ but the Pharisees and the doctors of the law rejected the divine offers made to them, refusing to be baptized by John.

³⁹ upon which the Lord said to him, you Pharisees won't leave any filth upon the outside of a cup or a platter: while your consciences are abandon'd to rapine, and sensuality. ⁴⁰ do you stupidly imagine that he, who made the outward man, did not make the inward too? ⁴¹ be but charitable to the utmost of your ability, and every thing will be pure to you. ⁴² but wo unto you Pharisees: for you will pay the tythes of mint, and rue, and all sorts of herbs, but as for justice and true piety, those you neglect. these you ought to have practised, without omitting however the other. ⁴³ wo unto you Pharisees, for you affect to have the first rank in the synagogue, and to be complimented in publick places. ⁴⁴ wo unto you: for you resemble subterraneous monuments, which men walk over, without perceiving them.

⁵³ As he was pursuing his discourse, the Scribes and Pharisees passionately urg'd him with many captious questions, in order to ensnare him,

¹⁴ The Pharisees too, who were noted for avarice, heard all this discourse, and treated him with derision.

¹ Now one of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, was there, a ruler of the Jews: ² who came to Jesus by night, and said to him, rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher sent from God: for no man can perform the miracles that you do, except God be with him.

⁴⁷ upon which the Pharisees answered, are ye also seduced? ⁴⁸ have any of the rulers, or of the Pharisees believed on him? ⁴⁹ but the populace, who are ignorant of the law, are such wretches.

⁸ for the Sadducees maintain, there is neither resurrection, nor angel, or spirit, whereas the Pharisees acknowledge both: the clamour was great,

⁵ they can testify, if they will, that I early profess'd myself a Pharisee, a member of the most rigorous sect of our religion:

⁵ being circumcised the eighth day, of the family of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew by descent, by sect a Pharisee. ⁶ if zeal is to be regarded, I persecuted the church; if the integrity prescrib'd by the law, I am without reproach;

²³ When he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the magistrates came to him as he was teaching, and said, by what authority dost thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?

²⁰ he own'd it, and did not deny it; but made this protestation, I am not the Christ. ²¹ art thou then Elias? said they; and he answer'd, I am not. art thou a prophet? and he answer'd, no. ²² said they to him, who then art thou? that we may give an answer to those that sent us: what sayst thou of thy self?

⁵ On the morrow, the rulers, senators, and doctors of the law, then at Jerusalem, assembled, ⁶ with Annas the high priest, Caiphas, John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the pontifical family. ⁷ and having caused Peter and John to appear, they asked, by what influence, or by what authority have you done this?

²⁸ saying, did not we strictly command you, not to teach in this name? and yet you have spread your doctrine through Jerusalem, and you endeavour to make us responsible for this man's blood.

⁸ I indeed have baptized you with water, but he shall baptize you with the effusion of the holy Ghost.

¹⁰ he was in the world, even the world that had been made by him, but the world knew him not. ¹¹ he came unto his own, and his own received him not.

¹⁹ then said they to him, where is thy father: Jesus answered, ye neither know me, nor my father: if ye knew me, ye would have known my father also.

³ and thus will they treat you, because they have not known the father, nor me.

³ and this is life eternal, to acknowledge thee to be the only true God, and Jesus to be the Messiah whom thou hast sent.

⁵ " for John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the holy ghost, not many days hence."

¹⁶ then I remember'd that expression of the Lord, "John baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the holy spirit."

³⁰ this is he of whom I said, after me cometh a man, who was before me: for he did indeed exist before me.

²³ and baptized, while John was likewise baptizing in Enon, near Salim, it being a place abounding with water: so that people came to be baptized there.

²⁶ who thereupon went to John, and said, master, he that was with you beyond Jordan, to whom you bore testimony, he himself does now baptize likewise, and the people flock to him.

⁴⁰ to the place where John at first baptized; and there he abode.

⁵ said, why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, to be given to the poor?

²¹ and she shall be deliver'd of a son, to whom you shall give the name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins.

²⁸ as the son of man came not to be ministred unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for all.

³² the passage of the scripture which he read, was this, "he was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and like a lamb before his shearer, was dumb, so opened he not his mouth:

³⁹ by him, every one who believes, is purged from all that guilt, for which the law of Moses had made no such provision.

³ I acquainted you chiefly with what I received myself, that Christ died for our sins, as the scriptures foretold:

²¹ for he hath made him who knew no sin to be a sin-offering for us, that we might be justified by God thro' him.

⁴ that he might deliver us from the vices of this present age, according to the will of God, even our father: to

¹³ Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us. (for it is written, " cursed is every one, that hangeth upon a tree.")

⁶ who gave himself for the redemption of all mankind: this is what was to be promulg'd in due time:

¹⁴ who gave himself for us, to redeem us from all iniquity, and qualify us to be his peculiar people, passionately affected to virtue.

¹⁷ whence it was necessary he should be in all things like his brethren; that he might be a merciful high priest, and faithfully discharge the divine office of expiating the sins of the people.

²⁸ so Christ being once offered up to take away the sins of many; he shall appear the second time, without making any further expiation to save those who expect him.

¹⁹ but by the precious blood of Christ, who is the lamb without spot, and without blemish:

²⁴ he himself cancel'd our sins by the crucifixion of his body, that we being set free from sin, might live in the service of virtue. it is by his bruises that you were healed:

¹⁸ for Jesus Christ himself has already suffer'd for our sins, the innocent for the guilty, to bring us to God: who, tho' he died with respect to his body, was rais'd to life by that spirit,

² he is the the victim that has expiated our sins: and not ours only, but likewise the sins of the whole world.

⁵ and you know that he appear'd to abolish our sins; and that he was himself without sin.

¹⁰ and what heightens his love, was this, that it was not we who first loved God, but it was he that first loved us, and sent his son to expiate our sins.

⁵ and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the first-born of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth: unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins by his own blood,

⁶ And I beheld, and saw before the throne, in the midst of the four animals, and in the midst of the elders, a lamb which seem'd to have been slain, having seven horns, and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

⁸ when he had taken the book, the four animals, and the four and twenty elders fell down before the lamb, every one of them having harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of the saints.

¹² saying with a loud voice, "worthy is the lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing." ¹³ and every creature which is in heaven, on the earth, under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I, saying, "blessing, and honour, and glory, and power be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the lamb for ever and ever."

¹ Then I saw the lamb open one of the seals, when I heard one of the four animals with a voice like thunder, say, "come, and see."

¹⁶ "fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the lamb:

⁹ After this I beheld, and there was a great multitude, which no man could number, of every nation, tribe, people, and language, who stood before the throne, and before the lamb cloathed in white robes, having palms in their hands. ¹⁰ They cried with a loud voice, "salvation from our God who sits upon the throne, and unto the lamb.'

¹⁴ my Lord, answer'd I, you can tell. and he said to me, these are they who came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the lamb.

¹⁷ for the lamb who is in the midst before the throne, shall feed them, and shall lead them to living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

¹¹ they overcame him by the blood of the lamb, and by the word to which they gave testimony; for their lives they expos'd to the last.

⁸ all that dwell upon the earth will worship him, whose names are not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the lamb, that was slain.

¹ THEN I looked, and I saw a lamb on mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his name and his father's name writ on their foreheads.

⁴ these are they who were not defiled with women: for they are virgins: these are they who follow the lamb wherever he goes: these were ransom'd from among men, being the first fruits unto God, and to the lamb.

¹⁰ he shall drink of the wine of the divine vengeance, the strongest wine that can be poured out of the cup of his indignation; He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone, in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the lamb:

³ and they sung the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the lamb, saying, "great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou king of ages.

¹⁴ they will make war with the lamb, but the lamb, who is lord of lords, and king of kings, together with those that are called, chosen, and faithful, shall overcome them.

⁷ let us rejoyce, and triumph, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the lamb is come, and his spouse is already adorn'd.

⁹ and he said unto me, "write, happy are they who are invited to the marriage-supper of the lamb." and he said to me, "thus I have delivered the real oracles of God."

⁹ Then there came to me one of the seven angels, who had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, "come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the lamb's wife."

¹⁴ the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them the names of the twelve apostles of the lamb.

²² I did not see any temple there: for the Lord God almighty, and the lamb are its temple. ²³ the city had no need either of the sun, or of the moon to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the lamb is the luminary thereof.

²⁷ and nothing that is impure, no one that is guilty of any abomination, or a lye, shall ever enter there: but they alone who are written in the lamb's book of life.

⁶ and having confess'd their sins, they were baptized by him in Jordan.

³ The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." ⁴ accordingly, John baptized in the desart, and preach'd the baptism of repentance, for the remission of sins. ⁵ all Judea, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, went out to meet him, and having confess'd their sins, he baptized them in the river Jordan.

⁷⁶ and you, dear babe, you shall be the prophet of the most high: for you shall go before the Lord, in order to prepare his way, ⁷⁷ by acquainting his people how they may be saved by the remission of their sins, ⁷⁸ through the tender mercy of our God, by which the rising sun has visited us from on high, ⁷⁹ to enlighten those, who are in darkness, and in the shadow of death, and to direct our steps into the ways of peace." ⁸⁰ Now the child continued to grow, and greatly improv'd in sense; and was in the desarts till the time, when he was to be manifested to Israel.

³⁹ and when they had performed every thing required by the divine law, they returned into Galilee, to Nazareth their city. ⁴⁰ and the child grew in stature and in all the improvements of the mind; he was stor'd with wisdom, and was the object of divine favour. ⁴¹ Now his parents went every year to Jerusalem at the paschal feast. ⁴² when Jesus therefore was twelve years old they went thither, as was customary at the time of that festival.

³ in pursuance of which, he went into all the country about Jordan, exhorting all to repent and be baptized, in order to obtain the remission of their sins. ⁴ as it is written in the book of the prophecies of Esaias, "the voice of one crying in the desart, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths clear.

¹⁶ and when Jesus was baptized, he came out of the water: and immediately the heavens seem'd to be parted asunder before him, and he saw the Spirit

¹⁰ and as soon as he was got out of the water, he saw the heavens open, and the spirit lighting upon him, like a dove.

²² and the holy spirit descended upon him in a corporeal form like a dove. and a voice came from heaven, which said, thou art my beloved son, in thee I am well pleased.

³² there is another who testifies of me, and I know that the testimony which he gives of me, is true.

¹³ Then went Jesus from Galilee to Jordan to be baptized by John. ¹⁴ but John opposed him, I have need, said he, to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? ¹⁵ and Jesus answer'd, Let it be so for the present, for it becometh us to do whatever is right. then John consented.

³¹ I knew him not: but therefore am I come baptizing with water, that he might be manifest to Israel.

⁵ Jesus answered, I tell thee, except a man be renewed by the spiritual baptism, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

⁴ and they were all filled with the holy ghost, and began to speak in different languages, as the spirit gave them utterance.

⁴⁴ Peter was yet speaking, when the holy spirit descended on all that heard him. ⁴⁵ all the Jewish converts, who came with Paul, were astonished to see that the gift of the holy spirit was diffused likewise among the Gentiles. ⁴⁶ for they heard them express their praises to God in divers languages. ⁴⁷ then Peter said, can we refuse the water of baptism to such as have received the holy spirit as well as we?

¹⁵ and while I was speaking to them, the holy spirit descended upon them, as it did on us, at the beginning. ¹⁶ then I remember'd that expression of the Lord, "John baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the holy spirit."

² did you receive the holy spirit, when you made profession of your faith? they answer'd, we have not so much as heard of a holy spirit. ³ what baptism then, said he, did you receive? they replied, the baptism of John. ⁴ upon which Paul said, John indeed administer'd the baptism of repentance, but with this admonition, that they should believe in him, who was to come after, that is, in Jesus the Messias. ⁵ when they heard this, they were initiated by baptism into the christian profession. ⁶ and Paul having given them imposition of hands, the holy spirit came upon them, and they spoke foreign languages, and prophesied:

¹³ for by one spirit we have all been baptized, to be form'd into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, slaves or free; and have been all made to drink of one spirit.

⁵ he saved us not in consideration of any virtuous actions which we had done, but out of his meer mercy, by the baptism of regeneration, he form'd us anew, by the plentiful effusion of the holy spirit, ⁶ thro' Jesus Christ our saviour:

¹⁷ of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: at the same time a voice was heard from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

³ whereupon the tempter came to him, and said, "If thou be the Son of God, command these stones to become bread."

⁶ if you are the Son of God, throw your self down: for it is written, "he will charge his angels to take care of you, and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest you bruise your foot against a stone."

²⁹ and they roar'd out, Jesus, thou son of God, what injury have we done you? are you come here to torment us before the time?

¹⁶ Simon Peter made answer, thou art Christ the son of the living God.

⁵ while he was speaking, a bright cloud surrounded them: and suddenly a voice broke out of the cloud, saying, "this is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him."

⁶³ but Jesus made no reply. and the high priest said to him, I conjure thee by the living God, to tell us, are you the Christ the son of God?

⁴⁰ and cry'd, you that could destroy the temple, and rebuild it in three days, now save thy self: if thou art the son of God, come down from the cross.

⁴³ he relied upon God; if he be such a favourite, let God then deliver him: for he us'd to say he was the son of God.

⁵⁴ now the centurion, and they that were with him, to guard Jesus, having observ'd the earthquake, and all that had happened, were under great apprehensions, and said, certainly this was the son of God.

¹ The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the son of God.

¹¹ when this voice from heaven was heard, "thou art my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased."

³⁵ the angel answered her, "the holy spirit shall descend upon thee, and the power of the most high shall over-shadow thee: wherefore thy holy offspring shall be called the son of God.

⁴⁹ Nathanael answered, rabbi, thou art the son of God, thou art the king of Israel.

²³ that all men should honour the son, even as they honour the father. he that honoureth not the son, honoureth not the father who hath sent him. ²⁴ I declare unto you, he that heareth my doctrine, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come under condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. ²⁵ I declare unto you, the time is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the son of God: and they that hear shall live. ²⁶ for as the father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the son, to have life in himself; ²⁷ and hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the son of man.

⁶⁹ and we have believed and we have acknowledged that you are the Christ, the son of God.

³⁰ I and my father are one.

³⁶ how can you say that I blaspheme, I whom the father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, because I said I am the son of God?

²⁷ do you believe this? yes, Lord, said Martha, I believe that thou art the Messiah the son of God, who was to come into the world.

⁷ the Jews answered him, we have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he pretended to be the son of God.

⁴ but as to his holy spirit miraculously declared to be the son of God, by his resurrection from the dead:

¹⁹ for what I, and Timothy, and Silvanus preached concerning Jesus Christ, the son of God, is not inconsistent, but invariably the same.

¹ God who at sundry times, and in divers manners, spake in time past to the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his SON, ² whom he hath constituted heir of all things, by whom also be made the world.

⁵ for to which of the angels did he ever say, " thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee? and again, I will be his father, and he shall be my son? ⁶ and when he re-introduces the first-begotten into the world, he saith, " and let all the angels of God worship him."

²³ whosoever denieth the son, disowns the father:

⁸ he that lives in sin, imitates the devil; for the devil was a sinner from the beginning. for this purpose the son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

¹⁴ and we have seen, and do testify, that the father hath sent the son to be the saviour of the world. ¹⁵ whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.

⁹ if we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater: now this is the testimony, which God has given us of his son. ¹⁰ he that believeth on the son of God, hath the testimony of God thereto: he that does not believe God, impeaches his veracity, because he does not believe the testimony that God gave of his son. ¹¹ Now what is testified, is this, that God has given to us eternal life: and this life is by his son.

⁹ no renegado that deserts the doctrine of Christ, has any interest in the deity: he that adheres to the doctrine of Christ, has an interest both in the father, and in the son.

¹⁸ And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira, write, "THESE things saith the son of God, whose eyes are like a flame of fire, and his feet like fine brass; I know thy works,

²⁵ Now there happen'd to be a dispute about baptism between a Jews, and some of John's disciples: ²⁶ who thereupon went to John, and said, master, he that was with you beyond Jordan, to whom you bore testimony, he himself does now baptize likewise, and the people flock to him.

²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said, "behold the lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world."

² having Jesus in our view, the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down on the right hand of the throne of God.

¹⁹ but by the precious blood of Christ, who is the lamb without spot, and without blemish: ²⁰ who was destin'd before the creation of the world, tho' 'tis of late only that he has appear'd, upon your account:

⁴³ The day following Jesus having a mind to go into Galilee, met with Philip, and said to him, follow me.

³⁹ Now many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him, for that testimony which the woman gave him, "he told me all that ever I did." ⁴⁰ so that when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired him to stay with them: and he stay'd there two days. ⁴¹ and many more believed, for having heard him speak himself: and said to the woman, ⁴² now it is not for what you have said, that we believe: for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the saviour of the world, the Christ.

¹⁷ but all do not obey the gospel. for Esaias saith, "Lord, who hath believed our report?"

²⁹ let no obscene language defile your mouth, use only such as tends to edification, that it may be beneficial to the hearers.

¹⁷ the spirit and the bride say, come. let him that heareth, say, come. let him that is a-thirst, come: and whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

⁷ to be saluted in publick places, and to have men address to them with the title of Doctor Doctor. ⁸ But don't you assume that title, for you have but one doctor, who is the Christ; as for you, you are all brethren alike.

²⁴ When the messengers of John were departed, he address'd himself to the people, and said with relation to John, what did you go to see in the desart? a reed shaken with the wind? ²⁵ or did you go to see a man richly apparelled? for magnificent dress and splendid living, you must look into the courts of princes. ²⁶ what then did you go to see? a prophet? yes, I say it, and more than a prophet. ²⁷ he it is, of whom it is written, "behold, I send my messenger before you, who shall prepare the way for you."

³⁸ now the man, who had been dispossess'd, begg'd to take him with him. but Jesus dismissed him,

³⁹ now she had a sister, named Mary, who placed herself at the feet of Jesus, to attend to his discourse.

²⁵ After this a great multitude being gather'd about him, he address'd himself to them,

²⁰ so he departed and went to his father. but while he was yet at a distance, his father saw him, and mov'd with compassion, ran and threw himself upon his neck, and kissed him.

⁴⁰ then Jesus stopp'd, and order'd them to bring the man to him, who being come nigh, he ask'd him, ⁴¹ what would you have me do for you? he said, Lord, I desire to have sight.

⁵ as soon as Jesus came at the place, he look'd up, and seeing him, Zaccheus, said he, make haste down; for I intend to dine at your house to-day.

⁶¹ whereupon the Lord turned about, and look'd upon Peter. then Peter remembred what the Lord had said to him, "before the cock-crowing you shall deny me thrice."

² who came to Jesus by night, and said to him, rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher sent from God: for no man can perform the miracles that you do, except God be with him.

²⁵ And when they had found him on the other side of the sea, they said unto him, master, when did you arrive here?

²¹ there were certain Greeks, who address'd themselves to Philip, who was of Bethsaida in Galilee, saying, sir, we would fain see Jesus.

⁴ but Jesus who knew every thing that should happen to him, advanc'd, and said to them, who do you look for?

⁷ then he asked them again, who do you look for? and they said, Jesus of Nazareth.

¹⁵ Jesus said to her, woman, why do you weep? who do you look for? she supposing him to be the gardener, said to him, sir, if it be you that have convey'd him away; tell me where you have laid him, and I will take care to have him remov'd. ¹⁶ Jesus said to her, Mary! she bowing her self, cry'd rabboni!

²¹ then Peter went down to the messengers; and said, I am the person you look for: what occasion brought you hither?

²⁹ for which reason I came without demur, as soon as I knew your message: I ask therefore upon what account you sent for me?

²⁸ Believe in me, all ye that labour under oppression, and I will give you relief. ²⁹ take my yoke upon you, and learn to be meek like me, and of an humble temper: and ye shall enjoy tranquillity of mind. ³⁰ for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

²⁹ but they press'd him, saying, stay with us, for it is late and begins to be dark. so he went in to tarry with them.

⁴⁶ but Nathanael said to him, can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? come and see, said Philip.

⁴⁰ so that when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired him to stay with them: and he stay'd there two days.

³⁷ all those whom my father gives me, shall come to me; and I will not reject any that come to me.

²² Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, why Lord, will you show your self to us, and not to the world? ²³ Jesus answered him, he that loves me, will observe my precepts: and my father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

³⁰ After this, Paul staid two whole years in a house he had hired, and gave access to all that visited him, ³¹ preaching the kingdom of God, and instructing them in all things relating to the Lord Jesus Christ, with the utmost freedom, without being molested.

²⁰ behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, I will sup with him, and he shall afterwards be entertain'd by me.

¹⁸ Now as Jesus was walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brethren, Simon, called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting their net into the sea: for they were fishermen. ¹⁹ and he said to them, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men: ²⁰ so they immediately left their nets, and followed him. ²¹ Going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were in a bark with Zebedee their father, mending their nets: and Jesus having called them, ²² they immediately left the bark with their father, and followed him.

² Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; the first is Simon, who is called Peter, then Andrew his brother,

¹⁶ Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon, and Andrew his brother, casting their net into the sea: ¹⁷ (for they were fishers) and Jesus said to them, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. ¹⁸ immediately they quitted their nets, and followed him. ¹⁹ when he had gone a little further, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the bark mending their nets. whereupon he called them: ²⁰ and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the people he had hired, and went after him.

² where he saw two vessels lying near shore: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. ³ he went therefore aboard one of the vessels, which was Simon's, and desired him to bear away a little from land. then he sat down, and preached to the people from the ship. ⁴ having finished his sermon, he said to Simon, row into deep water, and throw out your nets for a draught. ⁵ master, said Simon, we have toil'd all the night, without any prize: however, since you give the word, I will throw the net. ⁶ which being done, they enclosed such a multitude of fish, the net began to break: ⁷ so they made a signal to their partners in the other ship to come and help them. accordingly they came, and loaded both the boats so with fish that they began to sink. ⁸ at sight of this, Simon Peter fell on his knees before Jesus, and said, Lord, withdraw from such a sinful man as I: ⁹ for he, and all the company were frightned at the draught of fish they had taken: ¹⁰ so was James too, and John, the sons of Zebedee, both partners with Simon. but Jesus said to Simon, be not afraid; for the future you shall fish for men. ¹¹ then having brought their boats to shore, they left every thing, and followed him.

⁴⁰ Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two disciples, who had followed Jesus, after they had heard what John had said. ⁴¹ the first he met was his own brother Simon, to whom he said, "we have found the Messias," that is to say, the Christ. ⁴² and he brought him to Jesus. and when Jesus beheld him, he said, "thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas," which is by interpretation, a stone.

⁸ one of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him,

¹³ When they were arrived there, they went up into an upper room, where Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James the son of Alpheus, Simon the Zelot, and Judas the brother of James used to resort,

¹⁷ when they had seen him, they divulged what the angel had told them concerning this child.

³⁸ and happening to come in just at the same time, she likewise express'd her thanks to the lord, and spoke of Jesus to all those, who expected deliverance in Jerusalem.

¹⁸ "the spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, ¹⁹ to proclaim the favourable year of the Lord." ²⁰ then he closed the book, and returning it to the minister, he sat down: and as the eyes of the whole synagogue were fix'd with attention upon him, ²¹ he undertook to show them, how the passage they had heard, was actually then accomplished.

³⁶ and seeing Jesus as he walked, he said, "behold the lamb of God." ³⁷ the two disciples hearing this, followed Jesus.

⁴⁵ Philip meeting with Nathanael, said to him, we have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

²⁵ then said the woman to him, I know that the Messias (that is to say the Christ) is to come, and when he is come, he will tell us all things.

²⁸ the woman then left her water-pot, and went away into the city, and said to the people, come, ²⁹ see a man who told me all that ever I have done: is not this the Christ?

²⁷ for it was truly against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, that Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, united themselves in this city,

³⁸ how Jesus of Nazareth divinely inspired by the holy spirit, and with miraculous power, went about doing good, and healing all that were under the oppression of the devil: because God was with him.

³² to you therefore we declare, that the promise which God had made to the fathers, he has now perform'd to us, who are their children, by his having raised up Jesus again. ³³ agreeable to what is written in the first psalm, "thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee."

⁸ but to the son he saith, "God is thy throne for ever and ever; the sceptre of thy kingdom is a sceptre of equity. ⁹ thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy peers."

³ what we have seen and heard, we declare unto you, that ye also may be of the same society with us: and truly associated with the father, and with his son Jesus Christ.

¹⁷ to whom Jesus reply'd, blessed art thou Simon, son of Jona: for 'tis not man that hath revealed this unto thee, but my father who is in heaven. ¹⁸ and I tell thee likewise, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will hereafter build my church: and death shall not prevail against it.

¹⁶ these were Simon, whom he sirnam'd Peter, James the son of Zebedee,

⁸ at sight of this, Simon Peter fell on his knees before Jesus, and said, Lord, withdraw from such a sinful man as I:

¹⁴ (to whom he gave the name of Peter) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

⁴⁷ Jesus seeing Nathanael coming, said of him, there's a true Israelite, in whom is no guile. how do you know me? ⁴⁸ said Nathanael to him. before Philip called you, replied Jesus, I saw you under the fig-tree.

²⁴ but Jesus did not trust his person with them, because he knew them all. ²⁵ and he did not want any information concerning man: for he knew of himself the secret of their hearts.

⁷⁰ Jesus answered them, have I not chosen you all twelve, and yet one of you is an avowed enemy? ⁷¹ meaning Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that would betray him, altho' he was one of the twelve.

¹⁸ I say not this of you all; for I know whom I have chosen: and that passage of the scripture must be fulfilled, "He that eateth bread with me, hath lift up his heel against me."

² Simon Peter, Thomas, otherwise Didymus, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples of Jesus were all together.

¹⁵ So when they had dined, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of Jonas, do you love me more than these do? yes, Lord, said he, you know that I love you. Jesus reply'd, feed my lambs. ¹⁶ then he ask'd him the second time, Simon son of Jonas do you love me? yes, Lord, said he; you know that I love you. Jesus reply'd, feed my sheep. ¹⁷ Jesus said to him the third time, Simon son of Jonas, do you love me? Peter was grieved at his asking him the third time, "do you love me?" and he said to him, Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, feed my sheep.

¹² I mean that one or other of you cries out "I am of Paul, and I of Apollos, and I of Cephas,

²² whether Paul or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come;

⁵ have not we the liberty to take a christian woman with us in our travels, as well as the rest of the apostles, as the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas did?

⁵ that he was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve:

⁹ Peter, and John, who were esteemed to be pillars, perceived the favour that was bestowed on me, they admitted me and Barnabas into fellowship, and agreed, that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews.

¹⁸ Now as Jesus was walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brethren, Simon, called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting their net into the sea: for they were fishermen. ¹⁹ and he said to them, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men: ²⁰ so they immediately left their nets, and followed him. ²¹ Going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who were in a bark with Zebedee their father, mending their nets: and Jesus having called them,

⁹ As Jesus left that place, he saw one Matthew by name, sitting at the customhouse: and said to him, follow me. and he rose and followed him.

³ James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas, and Matthew the publican, James the son of Alpheus, and Labbeus, whose sirname was Thaddeus, Simon the zelot,

¹⁰ for the son of man is come to seek, and to save that which was lost.

²⁸ these things were transacted at Bethabara, near Jordan, where John used to baptize.

³⁵ The next day after, John was again there with two of his disciples:

⁵ Jesus then lifting up his eyes, and seeing a great company coming to him, said to Philip, where can we buy bread to feed this people?

⁷ Philip answered him, two hundred penny-worth of bread is not sufficient to furnish every one of them a little.

⁸ Philip said to him, Lord shew us the father, and we are satisfied.

¹² for I am not yet secure of the prize, I have not yet finish'd my course: but I press to obtain the reward, which Jesus Christ invited me to.

¹⁹ let us love him; since he first loved us.

²¹ wo unto thee, Chorazin, wo unto thee, Bethsaida: for if the miracles which were done among you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.

¹⁸ Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of Alpheus, Thaddeus, Simon the Canaanite,

⁴⁵ Soon after Jesus obliged his disciples to embark for Bethsaida, on the opposite shore, while he was dismissing the people.

²² Afterwards Jesus went to Bethsaida, where they presented to him a blind man, whom they entreated Jesus to touch.

¹⁰ The Apostles, upon their return to Jesus, acquainted him with what they had done. and taking them with him, he retired into a desart place over-against the city of Bethsaida:

¹³ wo unto thee Chorazin; wo unto thee Bethsaida: for if the miracles, which have been wrought among you, had been wrought in Tyre and Sidon, they would long since have lain repenting in sackcloth and ashes.

⁸ Philip said to him, Lord shew us the father, and we are satisfied. ⁹ Jesus said to him, have I been with you so long, and don't you know me yet? Philip, he that hath seen me, hath seen the father; why then do you say, shew us the father?

²³ and went to dwell in a town called Nazareth, so that those words of one of the prophets were fulfill'd, "He shall be called a Nazarene."

⁵⁵ is not this the carpenter's son? is not Mary his mother? and James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas, are they not his brothers?

¹¹ and the crowd said, 'tis Jesus the prophet of Nazareth in Galilee.

³ is not he the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses, of Juda and Simon? are not these his sisters, who are here with us? and they were scandalized at him.

⁶⁷ and seeing Peter warming himself, she looked earnestly upon him, and said, you too was with Jesus the Nazarene.

⁴ so Joseph departed from Nazareth in Galilee, and went into Judea to the city of David, called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and linage of David,

²³ Jesus was then about thirty years of age, being, as was suppos'd, the son of Joseph,

²² They all applauded him, and were surprized, that what he said, was delivered with so much grace. but they objected, is not this the son of Joseph?

²⁷ then beginning at Moses he explain'd all the passages there, and in all the prophets, which related to himself.

⁴⁴ then he said, this is what I told you, while I was yet with you, that what has been written concerning me in the law of Moses, in the prophets, and in the psalms, must be all accomplished.

⁴⁶ but Nathanael said to him, can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? come and see, said Philip.

⁴⁵ don't imagine that I shall accuse you to my father: even Moses himself in whom you confide, will be your accuser. ⁴⁶ for had you believed Moses, you would have believed me: since he has spoke of me in his writings.

⁴² is not this, said they, Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how comes he then to say, I came down from heaven?

⁵ they answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. I am he, said Jesus. and Judas who was to betray him, was also with them.

¹⁹ and Pilate caused an inscription to be put over the cross, in these words, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

²² ye men of Israel attend to what I say; Jesus of Nazareth was a man whom God distinguished among you, by miracles, by prodigies, and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as you your selves also know:

⁶ then Peter said, silver and gold have I none; but such as I have I give thee: in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, rise up and walk.

⁸ I answered, who art thou, Lord? it answered, "I am Jesus the Nazarene whom thou dost persecute."

⁹ I myself too once thought myself oblig'd strenuously to oppose the professors of Jesus the Nazarene, as I actually did at Jerusalem,

²⁸ upon hearing this, the whole synagogue were incensed against him. ²⁹ and breaking up the assembly, they drove him out of the city, to the precipice of the hill, upon which it was built, in order to throw him headlong down.

⁵⁷ why can't you judge what is proper to be done in your own affairs.

²⁹ see a man who told me all that ever I have done: is not this the Christ?

⁴¹ some said, this is the Messias. but said others, shall the Messias come out of Galilee? ⁴² hath not the scripture said, that the Messiah is to rise out of the family of David, and out of Bethlehem, the village where David was born?

⁵² they answered him, are you also of Galilee? search the scriptures, and you will not find that a prophet did ever arise out of Galilee.

²¹ bring every thing to the test: if it be proof, abide by that:

³¹ Jesus said therefore to those Jews who believed on him, if you adhere to my doctrine, then will you be my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth,

³⁹ they answered him, Abraham is our father. if you were Abraham's children, said Jesus, you would act like Abraham.

²⁸ for it is not the Jew in outward appearance, neither is it the external mark of circumcision: ²⁹ but it is the Jew, who is so inwardly, and it is the circumcision of the heart, according to the spiritual, not the literal sense, which have the approbation, I do not say of men, but of God.

⁴ who are Israelites; who had the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the law, the form of divine worship, and the promises;

⁶ However, the divine promise cannot but have its effect. for they are not the whole of Israel, who are descended from Israel:

³ for we are the genuine sons of Abraham, who worship God in the spiritual manner, and value no other dependance than that on Jesus Christ, without confiding in any external advantages:

¹ Renouncing therefore every kind of malice, and knavery, hypocrisy, envy, and detraction, as new-born infants desire that mystical milk,

²² leaving an example for your exact imitation, he who never offended, and from whose lips no fallacy was ever utter'd,

⁵ in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without defect.

⁶ but you, when you pray, enter into your closet, and when you have shut the door, pray to your father who is with you in your retirement, and your father who observeth the actions of your retirement shall reward you.

²⁵ and he did not want any information concerning man: for he knew of himself the secret of their hearts.

⁵ therefore suspend your judgment till the Lord comes, who will bring to light the secrets of darkness, and expose the counsels of mens hearts: and then shall every man have his due reward from God.

²⁵ the secrets of his heart become manifest; and so falling down on his face, he will worship God, and declare that God is certainly amongst you.

¹⁸ And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira, write, "THESE things saith the son of God, whose eyes are like a flame of fire, and his feet like fine brass; I know thy works, ¹⁹ your charitable offices, your faith, and your patience, and that your last works exceed the first.

² Where is this king of the Jews who is now born? for we have seen his rising star, and are come to pay him homage.

³³ then they that were in the ship, came and worshipped him, saying, of a truth thou art the son of God.

⁵ saying, " tell ye the daughter of Sion, behold, thy king cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting on an ass, even a colt, the fole of an ass."

¹¹ When Jesus appear'd before the governor, the governor asked him, art thou the king of the Jews? and Jesus answer'd yes.

⁴² he saved others, said they, but cannot save himself: if he be the king of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

³⁸ "blessed be he, said they, whom the Lord hath sent to be our king. prosperity from heaven, and glory from the most high."

³⁴ this I saw, and testify'd, that he is the son of God.

³⁸ then Jesus turned about, and seeing them following, said, what do you seek? they answered him, rabbi, that is to say master, where do you dwell?

¹³ and went to meet him, crying, "Hosanna, blessed is the king of Israel that comes in the name of the Lord." ¹⁴ now Jesus was riding upon a young ass, which he got by the way; as it is written, ¹⁵ "fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy king comes sitting on an ass's colt."

³⁷ upon this Pilate said to him, you are then a king? Jesus answered, you say right, for I am a king. to this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, to persuade mankind of the truth. every one that loves truth is observant of my directions.

¹⁹ and Pilate caused an inscription to be put over the cross, in these words, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. ²⁰ now this inscription was read by many of the Jews: for Jesus was crucified nigh the city: and it was written in Syriac, Greek, and Latin. ²¹ thereupon the chief priests of the Jews went to Pilate, saying, don't write, "The king of the Jews;" but that he said, I am king of the Jews. ²² Pilate answered, what I have writ, I have writ.

²⁸ Thomas answered, and said to him, my Lord and my God! ²⁹ Jesus said to him, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they who have not seen, and yet have believed.

²⁹ for he that makes use of what he has, shall have more; but if he makes no improvement thereof, it shall be taken from him.

⁴⁵ blessed is she that has believed; for what she has heard from the Lord, shall be accomplished."

⁹ when Jesus heard this, he admired the man, and turning about, he said to the people, that followed him, I assure you, I have not met with such an instance of faith even among the Jews themselves.

²⁹ Jesus said to him, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they who have not seen, and yet have believed.

¹¹ whereupon the devil left him, and immediately angels came and ministred unto him.

²⁰ Jesus replyed, the foxes have kennels, and the birds of the air have nests; but the son of man hath not where to lay his head.

⁶ only it was fit you should know that the son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins: arise, then, said he, to the paralytic, take up thy bed, and march home.

¹³ As Jesus was going to the district of Cesarea-Philippi, he asked his disciples, what do people say of me? that I am a common man? ¹⁴ they replied, some think you are John the Baptist, some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets. ¹⁵ but what, said he, do you take me to be? ¹⁶ Simon Peter made answer, thou art Christ the son of the living God.

²⁷ for the son of man shall come in the glory of his father, with his angels; and then shall be make retribution to every man according to his works. ²⁸ I declare unto you, some are here present, who shall not die, till they have seen the son of man enter into his kingdom.

³¹ When the son of man shall come in his majesty, accompanied with all his holy angels, he shall sit upon the throne of his glory.

²⁴ the son of man is going to die, pursuant to the scripture: but wo to that man by whom the son of man is betrayed: it had been better for that man, if he had never been born.

⁶² and Jesus answered, I AM. and ye shall see the son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.

⁹ when all of a sudden an angel of the Lord appear'd to them, and a heavenly light shone about them, at which they were greatly affrighted.

¹³ All of a sudden an army of celestial beings join'd the angel, singing praises to God, and saying,

²¹ When all the people were baptizing, Jesus was likewise baptized, and whilst he was praying, the clouds opened,

⁴³ then an angel from heaven appear'd to him, and comforted him.

⁶⁹ but in a little time the son of man shall be seated on the powerful right hand of God.

⁴ whilst they were in great perplexity about it, all of a sudden, two men appear'd before them in robes of light.

¹³ for no man hath penetrated into the secrets of heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the son of man, who is in heaven. ¹⁴ but as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the son of man be lifted up:

¹⁹ upon which Jesus said to them, verily, verily I say unto you, the son can do nothing of himself, except he sees the father do it: for whatever he doth, that the son does likewise.

²⁴ I declare unto you, he that heareth my doctrine, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come under condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. ²⁵ I declare unto you, the time is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the son of God: and they that hear shall live.

²⁷ and hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the son of man.

²⁶ Jesus answered them, I declare unto you, you seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye had loaves to eat, and were filled.

⁴⁷ I declare unto you, he that believeth on me hath everlasting life.

⁵³ but Jesus answer'd, I assure you, except ye eat the flesh of the son of man, and drink his blood, ye will have no life in you.

³⁴ Jesus answered them, I declare unto you, whosoever committeth sin, is a slave to sin.

⁵¹ verily, verily, I say unto you, whoever observes my doctrine, shall never die.

¹ I assure you, he that entreth not by the door into the sheep-fold, but climbeth up some other way, is a thief and a robber.

⁷ Jesus therefore subjoin'd, I declare unto you, I am the door of the sheep-fold.

²³ but Jesus answered them, saying, the time is come, when the son of man is to be glorified. ²⁴ verily, verily I say unto you, when a corn of wheat is thrown into the ground, there it lies a single grain unless it dies: but if it die, it becomes very fruitful.

¹⁶ I declare unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord, neither he that is sent, greater than he that sent him.

²⁰ I declare unto you, he that receiveth him that I send, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me. ²¹ When Jesus utter'd these words, he was troubled in spirit, and said without disguise, I assure you, that one of you shall betray me.

³⁸ Jesus answered him, you lay down your life for my sake! Verily, verily I say unto thee, the cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

¹² I assure you, he that believeth on me, shall likewise perform the works that I do; nay, greater works than these shall he do; because for that end am I going to my father.

²⁰ verily, verily I say unto you, that ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.

²³ tho' then you cannot ask any thing of me in person, whatever ye shall ask the father in my name, I assure you he will grant it.

¹⁸ I tell you for certain, tho' when you was a youth you girded your self, and rambled where you had a mind: yet when you are old, your hands shall be stretch'd out, and another shall gird thee, and lead thee where you will be unwilling to go.

¹⁰ and as they were looking stedfastly toward heaven, as he mounted up, on a sudden, two men appear'd before them robed in white, who said, ¹¹ "ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up to heaven? this same Jesus who is taken up from you into heaven, shall descend in the same manner as ye have seen him ascend thither."

⁵⁶ and he said, there I see the heavens open, and the son of man standing on the right hand of God.

¹¹ when he saw the heaven open, and something descending in the form of a great sheet, ty'd at the four corners, and let down to the earth:

⁷ and that you, who are distress'd, should obtain your repose, together with us, when the Lord Jesus, with his angels, the ministers of his power, shall descend from heaven,

⁹ the Lord shall punish them with everlasting destruction, when he shall appear in the glory of his power,

¹⁴ are not all those spirits dispatch'd as ministers to take care of those who shall belong to the christian church.

¹⁴ Of these did Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesy in these words, "see! the Lord is coming with ten thousand of his saints,

¹ At another time I had a vision, when I saw a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard talking to me, was like the sound of a trumpet; which said, "come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter."

¹¹ Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse appear'd; and he that sat upon him was called the faithful and the true: in righteousness he judges and makes war:
