³ how shall we escape, if we neglect that salutary doctrine? which was first published by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those that heard him;

¹⁷ from that time Jesus began to preach, "Repent, said he, for the kingdom of the Messiah draws nigh."

³³ ye serpents, ye brood of vipers, how can ye escape the punishment of Gehenna?

¹⁴ But after John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, spreading the good news of the kingdom of the Messiah.

¹⁵ Then he said to them, go ye into all parts of the world, and preach the gospel to all mankind. ¹⁶ he that believeth, and is baptized, shall be saved; but he that disbelieves, shall be condemned. ¹⁷ they that believe shall be endued with these miraculous gifts: in my name they shall cast out demons: they shall speak new languages: ¹⁸ they shall handle serpents, and if they drink any mortal poison, it shall do them no hurt: they shall lay hands on the sick, and the sick shall recover. ¹⁹ Now after the Lord had convers'd with them, he was assum'd up to heaven, where he sat on the right hand of God. ²⁰ as for the disciples, they went and preached the gospel in all parts: the Lord co-operating with them, and confirming their doctrine by the miracles that accompany'd it.

² according as they were delivered to us by persons, who were all along eye-witnesses, and had a share in the transactions themselves:

⁶⁹ he hath rais'd up a powerful saviour for us, in the family of his servant David,

¹⁹ what about? said he. why, about Jesus the Nazarean, said they, who was a prophet, eminently recommended, by his doctrine and his works, to the approbation of God and of all the people;

⁴⁷ and that repentance and remission of sins should be preach'd in his name, among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. ⁴⁸ you are witnesses of these things.

¹⁶ for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁷ for God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. ¹⁸ he that believeth on him, shall not be condemned: but he that believeth not, is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the only begotten son of God.

²⁷ and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

²² from his baptism by John, to the day of his assumption, we should chuse one to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

²² ye men of Israel attend to what I say; Jesus of Nazareth was a man whom God distinguished among you, by miracles, by prodigies, and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as you your selves also know:

¹² salvation is not to be had by any other: for there is no other name under heaven given to men whereby we can be saved.

⁴⁰ but God raised him up the third day, and shewed him openly, ⁴¹ not to all the people, but to those witnesses, which God had before chosen: to us, I say, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. ⁴² and he commanded us to publish, and to testify to the people, that he was the person whom God had constituted to be the judge of the living, and of the dead.

³ do you think then, O man, who do what you condemn in others, that you shall escape the judgment of God?

³ whilst they flatter themselves with peace and safety, destruction shall fall upon them, like the pangs of a woman in travail, and they shall not escape.

¹⁵ it is a proposition worthy to be believ'd, and be embrac'd by all, that Jesus Christ is come into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the greatest.

¹¹ For the divine savour has display'd its salutary effects to all mankind:

² whom he hath constituted heir of all things, by whom also be made the world.

¹ Let us therefore fear, lest any of us by rejecting the promise of entring into his rest, should be excluded from it.

¹¹ Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any of us by imitating their incredulity, should fall short thereof like them.

⁹ and by a perfect obedience he procured eternal salvation for all that obey him;

²⁵ so that he has an uninterrupted power to save those, that come to God by him, because he ever lives to make intercession for them. ²⁶ and indeed we wanted an high priest of such a character, one that is holy, innocent, undefiled, one that is separated from sinful men, and exalted above the heavens; one who was under no necessity,

²⁸ He that by two or three witnesses was convicted of violating Moses's law, was put to death without mercy. ²⁹ don't you think then that he deserves a much greater punishment, who hath despised the son of God, and counted the blood of the covenant wherewith be was sanctified, to have been justly shed, thereby offering an indignity to the spirit of grace?

²⁵ Take care that you be not deaf to him that speaketh: for if they did not escape, who disregarded the oracles pronounc'd on earth, much less shall we escape, if we turn away from him that delivered the oracles from heaven:

¹⁷ for now is the time when God will begin his judgments with his own church. now if he begins with us, what will the conclusion be to those who do not obey the divine gospel? ¹⁸ if the virtuous escape with difficulty, what will become of impious transgressors?

¹⁶ "fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the lamb: ¹⁷ for the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to subsist?"

¹⁰ They cried with a loud voice, "salvation from our God who sits upon the throne, and unto the lamb.'
