² for if the law deliver'd by angels was put in execution, and every transgression and disobedience was justly punish'd as it deserv'd;

⁵³ you, I say, who received the law by the administration of angels, but have not however observ'd it.

⁵ but with the greater part God was not well pleased: for their carcasses were strown in the wilderness. ⁶ now these things were examples to deter us from longing after things that are pernicious, as they did. ⁷ be not idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written, "the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play." ⁸ neither let us commit fornication, as some of them did, of whom three and twenty thousand fell in one day. ⁹ neither let us provoke Christ as some of them provoked him, and were destroyed by serpents. ¹⁰ neither murmur ye, as some of them murmured, and were slain by the destroying angel. ¹¹ All these things happened to them for examples: and are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come. ¹² wherefore let him that thinks he stands firm, take heed lest he fall.

¹⁹ "To what purpose then was the law?" it was added as a check to transgressors, till the offspring should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels with the intervention of a mediator.

¹ God who at sundry times, and in divers manners, spake in time past to the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his SON,

²⁸ He that by two or three witnesses was convicted of violating Moses's law, was put to death without mercy.

³⁵ don't therefore quit that resolution you have, which will be attended with so great a reward.

⁶ now without faith it is impossible to be acceptable to him: for he that presents himself to God, cannot but believe he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who make their addresses to him.

²⁶ esteeming the sufferings of Israel greater riches than the treasures of Egypt: for he had an eye to the reward.

⁵ Now, I would call to your remembrance what you once were inform'd of, that when the Lord had delivered the people from the land of Egypt, he afterward destroyed those that were disobedient.
