On the morrow, Peter departed with them, and some of his brethren from Joppa accompanied him. ²⁴ the next day they arriv'd at Cesarea: where Cornelius expected them, having invited his kinsmen and intimate friends, to his house. ²⁵ as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and prostrated himself at his feet, ²⁶ but Peter rais'd him, saying, stand up; I am but a man, as well as you. ²⁷ and as he discours'd with him, he went in, where finding many persons assembled; you know, ²⁸ said he, how unlawful it is for a Jew, to frequent a stranger, or even to go to his house: but God hath shewed me, that I should not look upon any man as common and unclean. ²⁹ for which reason I came without demur, as soon as I knew your message: I ask therefore upon what account you sent for me? ³⁰ then Cornelius said, it is now four days ago that I was fasting, and while I was at prayers in my house, about the ninth hour, a man in bright attire presented himself before me, ³¹ and said, "Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and God has approved thine alms. ³² send therefore to Joppa, for one Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner, by the sea-side, who, when he is arriv'd, will give you information." ³³ immediately I sent to you; and you have done well to come. now here we are all in the presence of God, to hear whatever he has given you in charge. ³⁴ then Peter thus began, now I plainly perceive that God is no respecter of persons: ³⁵ but in every nation, he that feareth him, and acts justly, is acceptable to him. ³⁶ this was what he communicated to the children of Israel, proclaiming salvation by Jesus Christ, who is the Lord of all mankind. ³⁷ you know, how his fame spread from Galilee through all Judea, after the baptism which John had preach'd: ³⁸ how Jesus of Nazareth divinely inspired by the holy spirit, and with miraculous power, went about doing good, and healing all that were under the oppression of the devil: because God was with him. ³⁹ we are witnesses of all his transactions, both in Judea, and at Jerusalem. however, they put him to death, even that of the cross. ⁴⁰ but God raised him up the third day, and shewed him openly, ⁴¹ not to all the people, but to those witnesses, which God had before chosen: to us, I say, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. ⁴² and he commanded us to publish, and to testify to the people, that he was the person whom God had constituted to be the judge of the living, and of the dead. ⁴³ he is the person to whom all the prophets give this attestation, that all who believe in him, shall receive remission of sins, by his authority. ⁴⁴ Peter was yet speaking, when the holy spirit descended on all that heard him. ⁴⁵ all the Jewish converts, who came with Paul, were astonished to see that the gift of the holy spirit was diffused likewise among the Gentiles. ⁴⁶ for they heard them express their praises to God in divers languages. ⁴⁷ then Peter said, can we refuse the water of baptism to such as have received the holy spirit as well as we? ⁴⁸ so he directed they should be baptized in the name of the Lord. after which they desired him to stay some time with them.

⁵ When Jesus was entred into Capernaum, a centurion came and addressed himself to him, ⁶ saying, Lord, my servant lies sick at home grievously afflicted with the palsy, ⁷ and Jesus said to him, I will come and heal him. ⁸ the centurion answered, Lord, I am not worthy the honour of such a visit: do but give the word, and my servant is sav'd. ⁹ for I am a man under authority, having soldiers under my command: I bid this man, go, and he's gone: another, come, and he's here: and to my servant, do this, and it is done. ¹⁰ when Jesus heard it, he was surpriz'd, and said to his followers, I profess I have not met with such an instance of faith, no not in Israel. ¹¹ and I declare unto you, that many shall come from the east and from the west, and shall sit at table with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the heavenly kingdom. ¹² but the heirs to the kingdom shall be cast into the darkness without: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. ¹³ and Jesus said to the centurion, go thy way, what you believed could be done, is effected for you. and his servant was healed in that very hour.

²⁷ after this the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered all the foot-guards about him.

⁵⁴ now the centurion, and they that were with him, to guard Jesus, having observ'd the earthquake, and all that had happened, were under great apprehensions, and said, certainly this was the son of God.

¹⁶ Then the soldiers took Jesus away into the hall, call'd Pretorium; and summon'd their whole company together.

² where a certain centurion had a servant whom he greatly valued, lying sick and ready to die.

³ Judas then having got a company of soldiers, and officers, by order of the chief priests and Pharisees, came thither with lanterns, torches, and with arms.

¹² Then the soldiers, the captain, and the officers of the Jews seized on Jesus, and having bound him,

⁴⁰ but Philip was found at Azotus: and passing on, he preached in all the cities, till he came to Cesarea.

⁸ on the morrow we set out, and arriv'd at Cesarea, and went to the house of Philip the evangelist, with whom we lodg'd:

²⁵ as they were tying him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion, does the law allow to scourge a Roman citizen, and without any trial?

²³ then calling two of his centurions, draw out, said he, two hundred foot, seventy horse, and two hundred archers, ready to march to Cesarea by the third hour of the night:

³³ who upon their arrival at Cesarea, delivered the letter to the governour, and presented Paul to him.

¹ Three days after his arrival in the province, Festus went from Cesarea to Jerusalem:

¹³ Some days after, king Agrippa and Bernice came to Cesarea to make Festus a visit.

¹ When it was resolv'd, that we should sail for Italy, Paul and other prisoners were delivered to the custody of one Julius, a centurion of

³¹ upon this Paul said to the centurion and his men, "except the crew stay aboard, you can't be safe:"

⁴³ who had a mind to save Paul, prevented their design: and order'd all that could swim immediately to get off to shore,

⁷ Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and ye shall find: knock, and the door shall be opened. ⁸ for every one that asks, does receive: he that seeks, does find: and he that knocks at the door, is admitted.

²⁵ At that time there dwelt at Jerusalem one Simeon, an honest, religious man, one who expected the appearance of the Messiah, and was endued with the spirit of prophecy.

⁴ accordingly they came to Jesus and earnestly pressed him, saying, he very well deserves you should do him this favour; for he loves our nation, ⁵ and hath built us a synagogue at his own charge.

¹ Jesus propos'd likewise this parable to them, to show that they should persevere in prayer, and not be discouraged.

⁵ now many devout Jews were residing at Jerusalem, who came from all quarters of the world.

² and some devout men who carried Stephen to his burial, making great lamentation over him.

¹¹ and the Lord said unto him, arise, and go to the street called Straight, and enquire at the house of Judas, for one Saul of Tarsus: for he is there at prayer.

³¹ Then the churches in all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, were unmolested and establish'd, and by their religious conduct, and the assistance of the holy spirit, grew more extensive.

³⁶ At Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha, that is in Greek, Dorcas: this woman was very active in all the offices of benevolence and charity.

⁴ and when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, what is it, Lord? and he said to him, thy prayers and thine alms have been observ'd and approv'd by God.

⁵⁰ but the Jews having animated the women of quality of their religion, and the leading men of the city, raised a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and banish'd them from their territorys.

¹⁴ so we took our places, and convers'd with the women, that came there. one of them was nam'd Lydia of Thyatira, a trader in purple, and a Jewish proselyte. she heard us: and the Lord inclin'd her heart to attend to what Paul said. ¹⁵ so that having been baptized with her family, she made us this request, if you think me sincere in my profession, pray come and lodge at my house; and she prevail'd upon us.

⁸ the chief ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his family, as well as many of the Corinthians, who heard Paul, and were baptized.

¹² there one Ananias a religious observer of the law, who had the good word of all the Jews in that place, came to see me,

²⁶ for those of Macedonia and Achaia, have thought fit to make a contribution for the poor converts at Jerusalem. ²⁷ they have thought fit, I say, and they owed them as much. for if the Gentiles have participated of their spirituals, they are bound on their side to minister to them in their temporals.

⁸ and God is able to make every charitable gift redound to your advantage; that being always sufficiently supply'd in every thing, you may excel in every good work: ⁹ as it is written, " he hath distributed, he hath given to the poor: his liberality remaineth for ever." ¹⁰ now he that furnishes seed to the sower, and bread for food, shall furnish and multiply what you sow, and increase the fruits of your liberality. ¹¹ so that being enriched in every thing, you may be continually beneficent to the glory of God by our thanksgiving. ¹² for the execution of this charitable office, does not only supply the necessities of the converts, but by the thanksgivings of many redounds also to the glory of God. ¹³ having this proof of you by such a supply, they will glorify God for your profess'd subjection to the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution to them as well as others; ¹⁴ and you will have the advantage of their earnest prayers, for the exceeding favour God has bestowed upon them by you: ¹⁵ thanks be to God for his unspeakable gift.

² Persevere and be vigilant in prayer and in thanksgiving:

¹⁷ pray upon all occasions.

⁵ If any of you is deficient in prudence, let him ask it of God, who liberally gives to all without upbraiding: and he will give it.

⁴ who will not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: and all nations shall come to adore thee; because thy judgments have been display'd."

⁴⁶ and about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI? that is to say, "my God! my God! why hast thou forsaken me?"

¹¹ when there appear'd to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the incense-altar.

¹⁰ but the angel said to them, be not afraid, I am only come to bring you great news, which will be matter of joy to you and to the whole world. ¹¹ for the Lord Messiah your saviour is this day born, in the city of David:

¹³ All of a sudden an army of celestial beings join'd the angel, singing praises to God, and saying,

⁴⁴ About the sixth hour, it was dark all over the land till the ninth hour. ⁴⁵ the sun was obscured, and the veil of the temple was rent in two. ⁴⁶ and Jesus cryed with a loud voice, saying, father, into thy hands I commend my spirit; and in pronouncing these words, he expired.

¹⁹ but an angel of the Lord opened the prison-doors by night, and having brought them out, said to them,

Then coming to himself; now, ¹¹ said he, I know for certain, that the Lord has sent his angel, and has deliver'd me from the hands of Herod, and from what the Jews were in expectation of.

²³ for an angel of that God, whose minister I am, and whom I serve, this night appear'd to me, and said, Paul, be not afraid:

⁴ He is so much superiour to the angels, as the authority he possesses is more excellent than theirs.

¹⁴ are not all those spirits dispatch'd as ministers to take care of those who shall belong to the christian church.

¹³ I declare unto you, in whatever quarter of the world, this part of the gospel-history shall be related, what this woman has now done shall be there mentioned to her praise.

¹² Zacharias startled at the sight and was seized with fear. ¹³ but the angel said to Zacharias, don't be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard: and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, whom you shall name John:

²⁹ Mary was surpriz'd at the voice of such an appearance, and wonder'd what the meaning of this salutation should be.

⁵ upon which they were frightned, and bowed themselves to the very ground: but the men said to them, why do you look among the dead for one that is alive?

⁵ and he said, who art thou, Lord? and the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: [it is hard for thee to kick against the goad. Then trembling with the fright Saul said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? and the Lord said to him,] ⁶ but rise, and go into the city, and you shall be told what you must do.

¹⁰ then I said, Lord, what must I do? and the Lord answer'd, arise, go to Damascus; there you will be inform'd what you are to do.

⁶ the Lord is coming: be not in any manner of sollicitude, but in all your occasions lay your requests before God by prayer and supplication accompany'd by thanksgiving.

¹⁸ I have now receiv'd the whole, and have more than sufficient: I am loaded with the presents you sent by Epaphroditus, which I have receiv'd as grateful incense, as a sacrifice which God accepts and approves.

¹⁰ for God is too just to his promise not to regard your piety, and the love which you have shewn to the christian religion by the assistance ye have given to the saints, and still continue to give.

¹⁶ but don't forget to be beneficent to the community; for such sacrifice is acceptable to God.

⁴ and the smoke of the incense together with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God, out of the angel's hand.

¹⁶ these were Simon, whom he sirnam'd Peter, James the son of Zebedee,

⁴² and he brought him to Jesus. and when Jesus beheld him, he said, "thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas," which is by interpretation, a stone.

³⁸ as Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples having heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him to desire he would come to them without delay.

³² send therefore to Joppa, for one Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner, by the sea-side, who, when he is arriv'd, will give you information."

⁷ and after the question had been much canvass'd, Peter rose up, and said, my brethren, you know that a considerable time since God chose me from among you to preach the gospel to the Gentiles, and bring them to the faith.

⁹ there Paul had a vision in the night. a Macedonian appear'd to him, and thus address'd him, "pass on to Macedonia, and come to our relief."

¹⁷ if any man is inclin'd to do his will, he shall know whether the doctrine be from God, or whether I speak from my self.

⁶ but rise, and go into the city, and you shall be told what you must do.

⁴³ so that Peter staid there a considerable time with one Simon a tanner.

¹³ he told us how he had seen an angel, who had presented himself to him, and had said, send to Joppa, to fetch Simon, surnam'd Peter: ¹⁴ who will give you such instructions, as will be the means of saving both you and all your family.

¹⁴ But how, say you, shall they call on him on whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? ¹⁵ and how shall they hear without a preacher? and how shall they preach except they be sent? as it is written, "how beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!" ¹⁶ 'tis true, faith comes by preaching, and preaching is by the divine appointment. ¹⁷ but all do not obey the gospel. for Esaias saith, "Lord, who hath believed our report?"

⁸ wherefore 'tis said, " when he ascended up on high, he made a number of captives, and gave gifts to men." ⁹ now his having ascended, what does it mean, but that he had descended into the lower parts of the earth? ¹⁰ he that descended, is the same too that ascended far above all heavens, to perfect all things. ¹¹ It is he then that made some, apostles: some, prophets: some, evangelists: and others, pastors, and teachers: ¹² thus fitly qualifying his servants for their respective offices, in order to build up the body of Christ:

⁹ for I am a man under authority, having soldiers under my command: I bid this man, go, and he's gone: another, come, and he's here: and to my servant, do this, and it is done. ¹⁰ when Jesus heard it, he was surpriz'd, and said to his followers, I profess I have not met with such an instance of faith, no not in Israel.

¹⁴ the soldiers too made the same demand, how are we to act? he answer'd them, injure no man either by violence or by fraud, and be content with your pay.

² let them not treat their christian masters, on pretence of being their brethren, with less respect: but be the more obsequious, because they are believers, and deserve to be belov'd, for the kind provision they make for them. let this be the subject of your instructions, and exhortation.

¹⁶ not as a slave, but in another quality, as a dear brother whom I particularly value, but much more should you, both as he is your servant, and as he is a christian.

³³ immediately I sent to you; and you have done well to come. now here we are all in the presence of God, to hear whatever he has given you in charge.

¹⁹ this heavenly vision, king Agrippa, I presently obey'd:

¹⁶ that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not thereupon apply my self to any man;

⁶ but you, when you pray, enter into your closet, and when you have shut the door, pray to your father who is with you in your retirement, and your father who observeth the actions of your retirement shall reward you.

⁵ about the sixth and ninth hour he went out again, and gave the like directions.

¹⁷ he that is on the battlements, let him not venture to go in to take any thing out of his house.

⁵ saying, as I was at prayers in Joppa, I saw something like a great sheet, tied at the four corners, which descended from heaven, and came just to me. ⁶ as I was considering it very attentively, I saw several quadrupeds, wild beasts, reptiles and birds. ⁷ then I heard a voice, which said, rise, Peter; kill and eat. ⁸ but I said, Lord, by no means: for I never did eat any thing impure, and defiled. ⁹ but the voice from heaven address'd it self to me again, and said, don't call that impure, which God has purified. ¹⁰ this was done three times, and then the whole scene was mounted to heaven. ¹¹ at that very instant three men, dispatch'd from Cesarea to me, were just arrived at the house, where I was. ¹² and the spirit bid me make no difficulty of going with them. these six brethren accompany'd me, and we went together to the man's house.

¹⁸ Pour out your souls unto God upon all occasions, watching in prayer with all perseverance and supplication for all christians:

⁸ I direct therefore that the men pray in publick and private, lifting up their hands to heaven with innocence, charity, and composure.

² there having fasted forty days and forty nights, he at length grew hungry.

¹ At that time as Jesus pass'd through the corn on the sabbath day, his disciples being hungry, pluck'd the ears of corn, and fell to eating. ² the Pharisees seeing that, said to him, see, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath-day. ³ he answer'd them, have ye not read what David and the rest of the company did when they were hungry,

¹⁷ at length being return'd to Jerusalem, one day as I was praying in the temple, I fell into a trance.

² I knew a christian who above fourteen years ago, was snatch'd up even to the third heaven, whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knows. ³ but tho' I don't know whether it was in the body, or out of the body, which God only knows, ⁴ this I know, that he was snatch'd up into paradise, and heard such secrets as it is not lawful for a man to reveal.

¹⁰ there I was in an exstacy on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a loud voice, like the sound of a trumpet,

² Immediately I was in an extasy: and I saw a throne placed in heaven, and one sitting on the throne. ³ he that sat, appear'd to the sight, like a jasper, and a sardine stone: and there was an arch like a rain-bow, round about the throne, which had the appearance of an emerald.

¹¹ and I declare unto you, that many shall come from the east and from the west, and shall sit at table with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the heavenly kingdom.

⁴⁷ Again, the gospel-kingdom is like a net that is cast into the sea, and draws all sorts of fish: ⁴⁸ when it is full, they drag it to shore, then sit down, and pick out the good to lay by, but throw the bad away.

²¹ When all the people were baptizing, Jesus was likewise baptized, and whilst he was praying, the clouds opened,

⁵¹ and he said to him, I declare unto you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending, and descending upon the son of man.

⁵² and not for that nation only, but likewise to reassemble the dispersed children of God into one body.

³² as for me, when I shall be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men unto me.

⁵⁶ and he said, there I see the heavens open, and the son of man standing on the right hand of God.

¹⁶ for I am not ashamed of the gospel, since it is divinely effectual to salvation, to everyone that believes, to the Jew first, and then to the Gentile.

²⁹ is God the God of the Jews only, and not of the Gentiles? surely he is of the Gentiles too; ³⁰ since it is one God, who will justify both the Jews and the Gentiles, through faith. ³¹ do we then make the law useless by our doctrine of faith? by no means; on the contrary, it is we that observe the law.

⁴ who are Israelites; who had the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the law, the form of divine worship, and the promises;

⁹ and you Gentiles ought to glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, "for this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name ." ¹⁰ and again the scripture saith, "rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people." ¹¹ and elsewhere, praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles, and laud him, all ye people." ¹² besides Esaias saith, "there shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles hope."

²⁵ Now to him that is able to establish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, conformable to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret from antient times, but now is laid open, ²⁶ and by the writings of the prophets (according to the commandment of the eternal God) made known to all the Gentiles, to induce them to obey the faith:

¹⁵ We are Jews by birth, and not of the sinful race of the Gentiles,

²⁸ there is now no distinction of Jew or Greek, of bond or free, of male or female: for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

¹⁰ when the full time of the dispensation was come, to reduce all things both in heaven and on earth, under one head in Christ.

⁶ "that the Gentiles should be heirs as well as the Jews, make one body together, and partake of the divine promise in Christ by the gospel."

¹¹ by which there is now neither Greek, or Jew; circumcised, or uncircumcised; Barbarian, or Scythian; slave, or freeman; but Christ is all, and in all.

¹ At another time I had a vision, when I saw a door was opened in heaven: and the first voice which I heard talking to me, was like the sound of a trumpet; which said, "come up hither, and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter."

¹⁹ THEN the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament: and there were lightnings, voices, and thunders, and an earthquake, and great hail.

¹¹ Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse appear'd; and he that sat upon him was called the faithful and the true: in righteousness he judges and makes war:

³⁷ In the last day, the most solemn day of the feast, Jesus being there, raised his voice, and said, if any man thirst, let him come to me, and drink.

⁹ Know you not that the unjust shall not inherit the kingdom of God? be not deceived: neither the licentious, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor the brutal, ¹⁰ nor thieves, nor misers, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor raparees, shall inherit the kingdom of God. ¹¹ and such were some of you: but you have been washed, you have been sanctified, you have been justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and by the spirit of our God.

³¹ In the mean while his disciples invited him, saying, pray master, eat. ³² but he answered them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of: ³³ upon which the disciples said one to another, hath any man brought him any thing to eat? ³⁴ Jesus said to them, my meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

¹⁰ and being seiz'd with hunger, he would have had something to eat: but while they were making it ready, he fell into a trance,

²² then Peter taking him aside, began to expostulate with him, saying, God forbid, Sir, this should ever happen to you.

⁹ but the wise answered, for fear there should not be enough for us and you, go rather to those that sell; and buy for your selves.

⁶⁰ and said, no, he shall be called John.

⁵ and he said, who art thou, Lord? and the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: [it is hard for thee to kick against the goad. Then trembling with the fright Saul said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? and the Lord said to him,]

²⁸ said he, how unlawful it is for a Jew, to frequent a stranger, or even to go to his house: but God hath shewed me, that I should not look upon any man as common and unclean.

¹¹ that which entereth by the mouth is not what defiles a man: but what defiles the man is that which is discharged by the mouth.

¹⁹ because that does not enter into his heart, but into the belly, whence it is discharg'd, the purest part of the food being left for nutrition.

⁹ but the voice from heaven address'd it self to me again, and said, don't call that impure, which God has purified.

⁹ making no difference between us and them, having purified their hearts by the faith.

²⁰ that they abstain from the pollutions of idols, from fornication, from animals that are strangled, and from their blood.

²⁹ that you abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the flesh of strangled animals, and from fornication: you will do well to preserve your selves from these practices. farewel.

¹⁴ I know, being fully assured by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: it is only so to him that thinks it is unclean.

²⁰ do not for such a thing as meat, pull down what God has been raising. all things indeed are pure; but they become evil to him who by eating giveth offence.

²⁵ whatever is sold in the shambles, that eat, without making any scrupulous enquiry.

¹² for till certain Jews came thither from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, for fear of those, who were for circumcision: ¹³ and the rest of the Jews dissembled likewise with him, insomuch that Barnabas himself was carried away with their hypocrisy.

³ interdicting marriage; and the use of animal food; which God created for the repast of the faithful, who embrace the truth with thankfulness. ⁴ for all that God has created is good, and nothing is to be rejected, provided it be receiv'd with thanksgiving: ⁵ since it is sanctified by the divine permission, and by prayer.

¹⁵ to the pure all things are pure: but to corrupt infidels nothing is pure; whose very mind and conscience is polluted.

⁹ This type subsists to the present time, both gifts and sacrifices being still offered, which cannot purify the mind of him that officiates ¹⁰ only in matters relating to meats and drinks, and divers baptisms, meer external rites which were to subsist only till the time of reformation.

¹⁴ again I looked, and I saw a white cloud, and there was sitting upon the cloud one like the son of man, having a crown of gold upon his head, ¹⁵ and a sharp sickle in his hand. and another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, "thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the reaping time is come; for the ¹⁶ harvest of the earth is ripe." so he that sat on the cloud, stretch'd out his sickle to the earth; and the earth was reaped. ¹⁷ Then another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven,

²⁰ and the grapes were press'd without the City, and blood came out of the wine-press, even to the horse-bridles: for the space of sixteen hundred furlongs.

¹⁷ Jesus said to him the third time, Simon son of Jonas, do you love me? Peter was grieved at his asking him the third time, "do you love me?" and he said to him, Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, feed my sheep.

¹ This is the third time I am coming to you: "in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established."

¹² after he had washed their feet, he took his garment, and setting down again, he said to them, do you comprehend what I have been doing?

¹² and they were all amazed, and perplex'd, saying one to another, what can the meaning of this be?

²⁴ Upon hearing this, the high priest, the captain of the temple, and the chief priests wonder'd bow this could be.

³ one day about the ninth hour, he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God, who addrest himself to him, and said, Cornelius!

⁷ As soon as the angel that spoke to Cornelius was departed, he called two of his domesticks, and a devout soldier, one of those that were in waiting: ⁸ and after he had related to them the whole affair, he sent them to Joppa. ⁹ On the morrow as they were on their journey, and drew nigh the city, Peter went upon the leads to pray, about the sixth hour. ¹⁰ and being seiz'd with hunger, he would have had something to eat: but while they were making it ready, he fell into a trance, ¹¹ when he saw the heaven open, and something descending in the form of a great sheet, ty'd at the four corners, and let down to the earth: ¹² in it were all sorts of quadrupeds, reptiles, and birds. ¹³ and a voice said to him, rise, Peter; kill and eat. ¹⁴ but Peter said, not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. ¹⁵ and the voice spake to him again the second time, don't call that common, which God calls clean. ¹⁶ this was done thrice: and then the sheet was taken up into heaven. ¹⁷ While Peter was perplexed about the signification of this vision, the messengers from Cornelius having enquir'd out Simon's house, arriv'd at the gate, ¹⁸ and calling somebody, ask'd, whether Simon Peter lodg'd there. ¹⁹ As Peter was still pondering upon the vision, the spirit said to him, there are people below, who enquire for you.

²⁰ being at a loss how to determine such an affair, I ask'd him if he would go to Jerusalem, and take his tryal there.

¹¹ when the spirit of Christ inform'd the minds of the prophets of his future sufferings, and of the glorious consequences, they were solicitous to know the circumstances of the times pointed at:

⁵ send messengers immediately to Joppa, for one Simon, whose sirname is Peter: ⁶ he lodges with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea-side.

¹¹ at that very instant three men, dispatch'd from Cesarea to me, were just arrived at the house, where I was.

¹³ but when he, the spirit of truth shall come, he will inform you of all those truths: for he will not speak from himself; but the information he shall receive will he communicate: and acquaint you with what is to come.

²⁹ then the spirit said unto Philip, go near, and advance to his chariot.

¹² and the spirit bid me make no difficulty of going with them. these six brethren accompany'd me, and we went together to the man's house.

² as they were ministring to the Lord, and fasting, the holy spirit said to them, separate me Barnabas and Saul, for the work to which I have destin'd them.

⁶ but after they had travers'd Phrygia and Galatia, they were order'd by the holy spirit not to preach the gospel in Asia: ⁷ being therefore arrived in Mysia, they essayed to go into Bithynia, but the spirit of Jesus would not allow it: so they pass'd by Mysia,

⁴ we staid seven days with the disciples we met there: who told Paul from the holy spirit, that he should not go to Jerusalem.

¹¹ but all are wrought by one and the same spirit, distributing to every one in particular, as he thinks fit.

¹ Now the spirit says expresly, that in the latter times some shall abandon the faith, by giving credit to seducing spirits, and the doctrine concerning demons;

¹⁵ Then he said to them, go ye into all parts of the world, and preach the gospel to all mankind.

²⁶ Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, arise, and go toward the south, by the way that leads from Jerusalem to Gaza, in the desart.

¹⁵ go, said the Lord to him: for he is the instrument I have chosen, to bear my name to the Gentiles, to kings, and to the children of Israel.

¹⁷ Ananias therefore departed, and being arrived at the house, he put his hands on Saul, and said, brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus that appeared to you on your journey hither, hath sent me, that you might obtain your sight, and be filled with the holy spirit.

⁴ being thus appointed missionarys by the holy spirit, they went to Seleucia, where they embark'd for Cyprus.

⁷ and after the question had been much canvass'd, Peter rose up, and said, my brethren, you know that a considerable time since God chose me from among you to preach the gospel to the Gentiles, and bring them to the faith. ⁸ God who knows their hearts has granted them a testimonial, by giving them the holy spirit, even as he did to us: ⁹ making no difference between us and them, having purified their hearts by the faith.

⁵¹ who thereupon spoke to him, and said, what would you have me do for you? the blind man replied, Lord, I desire to have my sight.

³⁸ then Jesus turned about, and seeing them following, said, what do you seek? they answered him, rabbi, that is to say master, where do you dwell? ³⁹ come, said he, and see. so they went and saw where he lodged, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

⁴ but Jesus who knew every thing that should happen to him, advanc'd, and said to them, who do you look for? ⁵ they answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. I am he, said Jesus. and Judas who was to betray him, was also with them. ⁶ upon Jesus his saying to them, I am he, they fell backward to the ground. ⁷ then he asked them again, who do you look for? and they said, Jesus of Nazareth. ⁸ Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. "if therefore it is me you look for, let these go their way."

²⁹ for which reason I came without demur, as soon as I knew your message: I ask therefore upon what account you sent for me?

¹⁹ but Joseph her husband, being a good-natur'd man, and unwilling to expose her to publick shame, he designed to put her away privately.

²⁰ because Herod had a respect for John, knowing him to be a very honest good man, and therefore protected him; having reform'd many things upon his remonstrances, which he us'd to receive very graciously.

³⁸ whosoever therefore shall be asham'd of me, and of my doctrine in this degenerate and corrupted age, of him likewise shall the son of man be asham'd, when he shall come with the glory of his father, accompanied with holy angels.

⁵⁰ There was likewise present a counsellor, named Joseph, a man of probity and justice, one who had never abetted the contrivances and proceedings of the Jews.

²⁴ I declare unto you, he that heareth my doctrine, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come under condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

⁶³ it is the action of the mind that vivifies, that of the body profits nothing: the words that I have delivered to you, spiritually understood, give life.

⁶⁸ but Simon Peter answered, Lord, to whom shall we go? you have the words of eternal life.

²⁰ I declare unto you, he that receiveth him that I send, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.

⁸ for I have given to them the instructions which you gave me; and they have received them; and have sincerely believ'd that I came from thee, and are persuaded that thou didst send me.

²⁰ neither pray I for these alone, but for those also who shall believe on me through their preaching.

³ wherefore, brethren, chuse out of your number seven persons of good reputation, full of the holy spirit and wisdom, who may have the management of this affair:

² and was a proselyte, together with all his family: he gave much alms to the people, and was assiduous in his prayers to God.

⁶ he lodges with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea-side.

¹⁴ who will give you such instructions, as will be the means of saving both you and all your family.

¹⁵ I have the same expectations from the DEITY, which they themselves entertain, that of the resurrection both of the just and of the unjust.

¹⁷ There it is that divine justification is revealed to be wholly by faith: as it is written, " the just shall live by faith."

¹⁷ but all do not obey the gospel. for Esaias saith, "Lord, who hath believed our report?" ¹⁸ I reply, have they not heard? on the contrary, "their voice spread thro' all the earth, and their words to the remotest inhabitants thereof ."

¹⁸ Now this is all owing to God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath made us the ministers of this reconciliation;

⁷ besides, he ought to stand fair in the opinion of unbelievers, lest he fall into disgrace, and the ambushes of the accuser.

³⁸ the just shall have life by trusting in me, but if he revolt, he will be the object of my displeasure.

² and it was for their faith that our fore-fathers acquired so great a reputation.

²³ the church of the first-born who are enroll'd in heaven, to God the judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,

² by admonishing you to be mindful of the predictions of the holy prophets, and of the directions of the apostles of our Lord and Saviour.

¹² Demetrius has the applauses of all men, and the testimony of his own virtue: we likewise certify in his behalf, and you know that our testimonial deserves credit.

⁴² this was soon spread thro' all Joppa; and many believed in the Lord.

⁴⁵ all the Jewish converts, who came with Paul, were astonished to see that the gift of the holy spirit was diffused likewise among the Gentiles.

²¹ always considering what is virtuous, with respect to God, and with respect to men.

² be not unmindful of hospitality: for thereby some have unknowingly entertained angels.

⁹ be mutually hospitable, without repining.

⁹ As Jesus left that place, he saw one Matthew by name, sitting at the customhouse: and said to him, follow me. and he rose and followed him. ¹⁰ and while Jesus was at table in Matthew's house, several publicans and loose people happen'd to come in, who sat down with him and his disciples.

¹⁹ however, Jesus refused him, and said, go home to thy friends, and tell them what great things the Lord hath done for thee, and how he hath had compassion on thee. ²⁰ and he departed, and published in Decapolis, what Jesus had done for him: and all were filled with admiration.

²⁹ Levi having prepared a handsom entertainment in his own house for him, a great number of publicans, and others, were likewise at table.

¹ In the beginning was the Logos, and the Logos was with God, and the Logos was God. ² the same was in the beginning with God. ³ all things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made.

⁴¹ the first he met was his own brother Simon, to whom he said, "we have found the Messias," that is to say, the Christ. ⁴² and he brought him to Jesus. and when Jesus beheld him, he said, "thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas," which is by interpretation, a stone. ⁴³ The day following Jesus having a mind to go into Galilee, met with Philip, and said to him, follow me. ⁴⁴ now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. ⁴⁵ Philip meeting with Nathanael, said to him, we have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. ⁴⁶ but Nathanael said to him, can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? come and see, said Philip. ⁴⁷ Jesus seeing Nathanael coming, said of him, there's a true Israelite, in whom is no guile. how do you know me? ⁴⁸ said Nathanael to him. before Philip called you, replied Jesus, I saw you under the fig-tree. ⁴⁹ Nathanael answered, rabbi, thou art the son of God, thou art the king of Israel.

²⁸ the woman then left her water-pot, and went away into the city, and said to the people, come, ²⁹ see a man who told me all that ever I have done: is not this the Christ?

² and there came a leper who threw himself at his feet, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

³³ then they that were in the ship, came and worshipped him, saying, of a truth thou art the son of God.

¹¹ When the people saw what Paul had done, they cry'd out in the Lycaonian tongue, the Gods have assum'd a human form, and are descended among us. ¹² Barnabas, they stiled Jupiter; and Paul, Mercury, because he was the chief speaker. ¹³ even the priest of Jupiter, whose statue was at the city-gates, brought oxen and garlands there, and together with the people, would have offer'd sacrifice to the apostles.

¹⁰ then I fell at his seet to worship him: but he said to me, "forbear: I am the servant of God, as you and your brethren are, that bear testimony to Jesus: worship God: for to give testimony to Jesus, is the very design of prophecy."

⁸ I John saw these things, and heard them. and when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel, who shewed me these things. ⁹ but he said to me, "forbear, I am the servant of God, as you are, and your brethren the prophets, and those who observe the words of this book: worship God."

¹⁰ Then said Jesus to him, get thee hence Satan: for it it written, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve ."

¹⁴ but Paul and Barnabas being appriz'd of it, tore their clothes, and throwing themselves among the crowd, ¹⁵ cry'd out, "sirs, what are you going to do? we are but men as well as you, and we exhort you to renounce these vanities, and turn to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth and the sea, and all that they contain:

³ don't be led into any mistake, because the previous rebellion does not yet appear, nor the man of sin throw off the disguise, that offspring of perdition: ⁴ that adversary that exalts it self above the divine authority of majesty: that is seated in the temple of God, pretending to be it self divine.

⁸ all that dwell upon the earth will worship him, whose names are not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the lamb, that was slain.

³⁵ is it not a common saying, "t'other four months, and then comes harvest?" lift up your eyes now, I say, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.

²⁴ the next day they arriv'd at Cesarea: where Cornelius expected them, having invited his kinsmen and intimate friends, to his house.

²⁷ when they were arrived, and had assembled the Church, they related what great things God had wrought by them, and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles:

⁹ for I have a very fair and promising opportunity given me of propagating the gospel, tho' there are many opposers.

¹² When an opportunity was given me by the Lord to preach the gospel of Christ, upon my arrival at Troas,

³ put up your requests likewise for me, that God would give me an opportunity to declare the mystery of Christ (for which I am even in bonds:)

¹¹ the Pharisee in a standing posture pray'd thus by himself, O God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men, a robber, a cheat, an adulterer, or like that Publican.

⁹ but the woman of Samaria said to him, how is it that you who are a Jew, ask drink of me, who am a Samaritan? (for the Jews have no friendly intercourse with the Samaritans.)

²⁷ Upon this his disciples came, and were surpriz'd at his conversing with the woman: yet none of them said, what did you ask her? or, why do you talk with her?

²⁸ Then they led Jesus early in the morning from Caiaphas, to the Pretorium: but the Jews themselves did not enter into the Pretorium, lest they should be defiled: and so not be in a condition to eat the passover.

¹⁴ but Peter said, not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. ¹⁵ and the voice spake to him again the second time, don't call that common, which God calls clean.

³⁴ then Peter thus began, now I plainly perceive that God is no respecter of persons: ³⁵ but in every nation, he that feareth him, and acts justly, is acceptable to him.

² and when Peter was return'd to Jerusalem, the Jewish converts objected to his conduct, ³ and ask'd him, why did you go to eat with the uncircumcised?

²¹ but the Lord said to me, "be gone, for I will send you far hence, even to the Gentiles." ²² Till that word, the Jews had given their attention, but then they broke out into a full cry, "out of the world with such a fellow: for it is not fit he should live."

¹² for till certain Jews came thither from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, for fear of those, who were for circumcision: ¹³ and the rest of the Jews dissembled likewise with him, insomuch that Barnabas himself was carried away with their hypocrisy. ¹⁴ but when I saw, they conformed not their conduct to the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all: if you being a Jew, live after the manner of the Gentiles, and not according to that of the Jews, why do you constrain the Gentiles to judaize?

⁶ "that the Gentiles should be heirs as well as the Jews, make one body together, and partake of the divine promise in Christ by the gospel." ⁷ of this I was made a minister, according to the gracious gift God bestowed on me, by the effectual operation of his influence:

¹⁹ As Peter was still pondering upon the vision, the spirit said to him, there are people below, who enquire for you. ²⁰ rise therefore, get thee down, and go with them, without hesitating: for I have sent them.

¹⁵ adore the Lord God in your hearts, and be ready to show with modesty and respect to every one that asks it, what ground there is for the expectations you have:

³ his aspect was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow.

⁶ but he said to them, don't be frightned: you look for Jesus the Nazarene: he is risen, he is not here: see the place where he lay.

⁴ whilst they were in great perplexity about it, all of a sudden, two men appear'd before them in robes of light.

¹⁰ and as they were looking stedfastly toward heaven, as he mounted up, on a sudden, two men appear'd before them robed in white, who said,

⁷ As soon as the angel that spoke to Cornelius was departed, he called two of his domesticks, and a devout soldier, one of those that were in waiting: ⁸ and after he had related to them the whole affair, he sent them to Joppa. ⁹ On the morrow as they were on their journey, and drew nigh the city, Peter went upon the leads to pray, about the sixth hour.

²³ then he invited them in, and they lodged there. On the morrow, Peter departed with them, and some of his brethren from Joppa accompanied him. ²⁴ the next day they arriv'd at Cesarea: where Cornelius expected them, having invited his kinsmen and intimate friends, to his house.

¹³ but the angel said to Zacharias, don't be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard: and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, whom you shall name John:

⁸ when he had taken the book, the four animals, and the four and twenty elders fell down before the lamb, every one of them having harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of the saints.

³ and another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given to him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar, which was before the throne. ⁴ and the smoke of the incense together with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God, out of the angel's hand.

⁴ he therefore who shall become as void of ambition as this child, he shall be greatest in the kingdom of the Messiah.

³⁰ but many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

¹⁵ I declare unto you, he that shall pretend to be admitted into the kingdom of God, and has not the temper of a little child, shall not enter therein.

¹¹ the Jews there were of a more generous temper than those of Thessalonica: for they very readily embrac'd their doctrine, and daily examin'd, whether it was conformable to the scriptures. ¹² so that many of them believed, besides a considerable number of women of distinction, and of men, that were Greeks.

²⁸ take notice therefore, that the offers of divine salvation are sent to the Gentiles, and they will receive them.

¹⁸ let no man deceive himself: if any among you pretends to worldly wisdom, let him commence fool, in order to be truly wise.

¹⁴ yet you did not despise me for the trial which attended my person, nor treated me with scorn; but received me as an angel of God, even as Christ Jesus.

¹³ nor do we fail of giving thanks to God continually, that, when you received the word of God, which we preach, you did not receive it as the doctrine of men, but as a doctrine that appears to be truly divine, by the influences it displays in you, who believe.

¹⁹ Wherefore, my dear brethren, let every one be eager to hear, averse to contradiction, and deaf to passion.

²¹ throw off then your vices as dregs and scum: and receive with docility that genuine doctrine, which is effectual to your salvation.

¹ Renouncing therefore every kind of malice, and knavery, hypocrisy, envy, and detraction, as new-born infants desire that mystical milk, ² which is without any mixture, and will make you thrive. Since you have tasted how good the Lord is,

² and he addressed himself to them in these instructions.

¹⁶ they dispatch'd therefore some of their disciples, together with the Herodians, who thus address'd themselves to him; master, we know that you are sincere, and faithfully teach the divine law without fear or flattery: for you have no regard to the outward quality of men.

²¹ they address'd him therefore in this manner; master, we know that what you say and teach is all right. you are not influenc'd by the quality of men, but explain the divine law with sincerity:

³⁵ then Philip enter'd upon the subject, and show'd how the whole passage was applicable to Jesus.

¹¹ since with God there is no respect of persons.

⁶ But as for those who were men of real eminency, how considerable soever they were heretofore, it does not any ways affect me; God accepts not the person of any man: for they who were of note, in conference with me, had nothing new to add.

⁹ and you masters have a just regard to them, by softning your authority: knowing that both their and your master is in heaven, where there is no respect of persons with him.

¹⁹ in particular for me, that I may have leave to speak without any restraint, and make known the mystery of the gospel, ²⁰ for which I am an embassador, tho' in chains: that I may duely represent it to the full.

²⁵ but he that does wrong shall be punish'd for his injustice: for no regard will be shown to the external characters of men.

⁴ have not you made an arbitrary distinction, don't your judgments flow from a vicious principle?

⁹ but partiality is iniquity; and the law will convict the offender of transgression.

¹⁷ and since you invoke him as your father, who without respect of persons judges every one according to his actions; while you are passing thro' this world, be fearful of offending him:

²⁸ the angel, upon his arrival, said to her; "Hail, favorite of heaven, the Lord is with thee: thou happiest of thy sex."

¹³ for not the bare hearers of the law, but they who observe the law, are such as shall be justified, before God.

²⁵ Circumcision indeed is an advantage, if you keep the law: but if you violate the law, your being a Jew makes you no better than a heathen. ²⁶ if therefore an uncircumcised Gentile keep the moral precepts contained in the law, shall not he be reckon'd, as if he were circumcised? ²⁷ and shall not a Gentile, tho' he is not actually circumcised, if he fulfil the law, condemn thee, who, tho' literally circumcised, dost yet transgress the law? ²⁸ for it is not the Jew in outward appearance, neither is it the external mark of circumcision: ²⁹ but it is the Jew, who is so inwardly, and it is the circumcision of the heart, according to the spiritual, not the literal sense, which have the approbation, I do not say of men, but of God.

²² that divine justification, which by faith in Jesus Christ is extended to all, that believe; for there is no distinction:

²⁹ is God the God of the Jews only, and not of the Gentiles? surely he is of the Gentiles too; ³⁰ since it is one God, who will justify both the Jews and the Gentiles, through faith.

¹² In reality there is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile: they have all the same Lord, who is bountiful to all that call upon him. ¹³ "whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord, shall be saved."

¹³ for by one spirit we have all been baptized, to be form'd into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, slaves or free; and have been all made to drink of one spirit.

¹ since then, we have these promises, my dear brethren, let us cleanse our selves from all impurity, whether of body or mind, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

⁶ to display the glory of his grace, which has render'd us acceptable by his beloved son:

¹³ but now you who were formerly at a distance, are brought near by the death of Christ Jesus. ¹⁴ for he is our peace-maker, who hath united both Jew and Gentile, and hath by his flesh broken down the middle wall of partition ¹⁵ (which kept us at variance) by abolishing the dogmatical injunctions of the law, that having made the peace, he might incorporate the two into one new body under himself; ¹⁶ that he might reconcile both in one body unto God by the cross, wherefore he destroyed the enmity that was between them: ¹⁷ and being come, he preached the glad tidings of peace to YOU who were afar off, and to US that were nigh. ¹⁸ for thro' him both of us have access by the same spirit to the father.

⁶ "that the Gentiles should be heirs as well as the Jews, make one body together, and partake of the divine promise in Christ by the gospel." ⁷ of this I was made a minister, according to the gracious gift God bestowed on me, by the effectual operation of his influence: ⁸ upon me, who am the meanest of all christians, is this favour bestowed, that I should proclaim to the Gentiles the undiscoverable advantages by Christ;

²¹ Be mutually obsequious with christian respect.

³ for we are the genuine sons of Abraham, who worship God in the spiritual manner, and value no other dependance than that on Jesus Christ, without confiding in any external advantages:

⁶ which is not only come to you, but to all the world; where it produces its effects, and increases, as it does also among you, ever since you sincerely embrac'd the divine favour,

²³ provided you continue well-grounded and settled in the faith, and do not abandon that hope which has been offer'd to you by the gospel, and is proclaim'd to all mankind; of which I Paul am made a minister. ²⁴ Now I rejoice in my sufferings for you, and am filling up the measure of those remaining afflictions, which in my turn I am to suffer in this life, in the cause of Christ, for the sake of his body, which is the church: ²⁵ of which I have been established a minister, according to the charge which God has given me to preach his gospel faithfully among you. --- ²⁶ that mystery, which has been hid from ages and generations, but is now made manifest to his saints: ²⁷ to whom God does disclose the glorious advantages of this mystery to you Gentiles, to wit, "that by Christ you may have the expectation of glory."

⁴ 'Twas by faith that Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he was declared righteous, God himself having testified that he accepted his offering, and after he died for his faith, he was not silent. ⁵ By faith Enoch was translated that he might avoid dying; and he could not be found, because God had translated him: for 'tis recorded, that before his translation he was approved by God. ⁶ now without faith it is impossible to be acceptable to him: for he that presents himself to God, cannot but believe he exists, and that he is a rewarder of those who make their addresses to him.

²⁹ since you know that God is the source of virtue, you know that every one who has virtue, derives it from him.

⁶ but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

²⁷ my father has instructed me in every thing: and no one knoweth the son, except the father: nor does any one know the father, except the son, and he to whom the son is pleased to reveal him."

⁴⁴ " the Lord said unto my Lord, sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?" ⁴⁵ why then does David call him Lord, if He be David's son? ⁴⁶ but not a man was able to answer him a word, and from that time there was no body so hardy as to ask him any more questions.

¹⁸ and Jesus came, and said to them, all power has been given me in heaven and in earth.

¹⁰ but the angel said to them, be not afraid, I am only come to bring you great news, which will be matter of joy to you and to the whole world. ¹¹ for the Lord Messiah your saviour is this day born, in the city of David: ¹² and by this sign shall you know him; you will find the babe swathed, lying in a manger. ¹³ All of a sudden an army of celestial beings join'd the angel, singing praises to God, and saying, ¹⁴ "glory to God in the heavens, and to men on earth felicity in the divine favour."

⁴⁷ and that repentance and remission of sins should be preach'd in his name, among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

³⁵ the father loveth the son, and hath given all things into his hand. ³⁶ he that believeth on the son, hath a right to everlasting life: and he that disobeys the son, shall not enjoy life; but be expos'd to divine wrath.

²³ that all men should honour the son, even as they honour the father. he that honoureth not the son, honoureth not the father who hath sent him. ²⁴ I declare unto you, he that heareth my doctrine, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come under condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. ²⁵ I declare unto you, the time is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the son of God: and they that hear shall live. ²⁶ for as the father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the son, to have life in himself; ²⁷ and hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the son of man. ²⁸ let not this surprize you: for the time is coming, when all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and they that have done good, ²⁹ shall rise to the possession of life; and they that have done evil, shall rise to their condemnation.

³⁶ therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

³⁸ Peter replied, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the holy spirit. ³⁹ for the promise is to you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

²⁵ ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, when he said to Abraham, "all the families of the earth shall be blessed in your posterity." ²⁶ it is to you that God first of all sent his son Jesus, having raised him up to bless you, provided you all renounce your iniquities.

³¹ him hath God rais'd by his power to be the author of salvation, by giving repentance to Israel, and the remission of their sins.

¹⁹ In the mean time they who were dispers'd upon the persecution that arose after Stephen's time, had travell'd as far as Phenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, without preaching the gospel to any, but Jews only.

³² to you therefore we declare, that the promise which God had made to the fathers, he has now perform'd to us, who are their children, by his having raised up Jesus again.

⁴⁶ but Paul and Barnabas told them boldly, you indeed were the first, to whom the word of God was to be preach'd: but since you reject it, and judge your own selves unworthy of eternal life, be assur'd, we shall make the same offer to the Gentiles:

¹¹ for the scripture saith, "whosoever believeth on him, shall not be ashamed."

⁹ for to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.

²⁷ for he hath subjected all things to him. but when it is said all things are subjected, it is plain that he is to be excepted, who did subject all things to him.

⁴⁷ the first man was formed from the dust of the earth: the second man was from heaven.

¹⁸ Now this is all owing to God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath made us the ministers of this reconciliation; ¹⁹ for it is God that has reconciled the world to himself, by Jesus Christ, by not imputing their sins to them; and hath committed to us the gospel of reconciliation. ²⁰ we then are ambassadors for Christ, and 'tis God who makes you the offers by us: we pray you in the name of Christ, to make your peace with God. ²¹ for he hath made him who knew no sin to be a sin-offering for us, that we might be justified by God thro' him.

²⁰ which he exerted in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at the head of his heavenly kingdom, ²¹ far above all the principalities, all the powers, all the potentates, all the dominations, and whatever order can be named, not only in this age, but also in the age to come: ²² for he has subjected all things to him, and constituted him supreme head of the church, ²³ which is his body, a work compleatly finished in all its parts.

⁵ there is but one Lord, one faith, one baptism, ⁶ one God and father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in all. ⁷ but to every one of us a different charge is given, according to the distribution which Christ has made;

¹¹ and that every nation should confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord, to the glory of God the father.

¹⁵ he is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of the whole creation. ¹⁶ for by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are on earth, both visible and invisible, the thrones, and the sovereigntys, the principalitys, and the powers: all were created by him, and for him: he is before all things, ¹⁷ and by him all things consist. ¹⁸ he himself is the head of the church, which is his body. he is the prince, the first-born from the dead, that in all things he might be chief.

²⁰ and having made peace by the blood of his cross, to reconcile all things to himself, both those in heaven, and those upon earth.

² whom he hath constituted heir of all things, by whom also be made the world.

⁶ and when he re-introduces the first-begotten into the world, he saith, " and let all the angels of God worship him." ⁷ and of the angels, he saith, who employs his angels like the winds, and flames of fire as his ministers." ⁸ but to the son he saith, "God is thy throne for ever and ever; the sceptre of thy kingdom is a sceptre of equity. ⁹ thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy peers." ¹⁰ again, "thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thy hands. ¹¹ they shall perish, but thou shalt remain: and they all shall come to an end like an old garment; ¹² as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall never end."

² to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of the whole booty: first, being by the signification of his name king of justice, and in fact king of Salem, which is, king of peace; ³ without father, without mother, without genealogy; his days have no beginning, and his life no end; but like the son of God, he was a perpetual priest.

²⁰ May the God of peace, who has raised from the dead our Lord Jesus (who by the blood of the eternal covenant is become the grand pastor of

²² who being ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God, where angels, dominations, and potentates have been subjected to him.

⁵ and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the first-born of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth: unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins by his own blood,

¹⁸ I am he that liveth; I was dead; but now you see I am alive for all eternity, amen; and I have the keys of the grave, and of death."

¹⁴ they will make war with the lamb, but the lamb, who is lord of lords, and king of kings, together with those that are called, chosen, and faithful, shall overcome them.

¹⁶ on the mantle about his thigh was this inscription, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

¹ At that time appeared John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ² and saying, "Repent ye: for the kingdom of the Messiah draws nigh." ³ for it is of John the prophet Esaias spoke, when he said, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths clear."

¹² After this, Jesus having heard that John was confined in prison, retired into Galilee. ¹³ and leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, a maritime town upon the confines of Zabulon and Nepthalim: ¹⁴ whereby those words of Esaias the prophet, had their full effect, "the land of Zabulon, ¹⁵ and the land of Nephthalim, lying upon the sea, and about Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles: ¹⁶ the people which sat in darkness, saw a great light: and to those who sat in the region and shadow of death, light is sprung up." ¹⁷ from that time Jesus began to preach, "Repent, said he, for the kingdom of the Messiah draws nigh."

¹ The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the son of God. ² It is written in the prophet, "behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee. ³ The voice of one crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." ⁴ accordingly, John baptized in the desart, and preach'd the baptism of repentance, for the remission of sins. ⁵ all Judea, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, went out to meet him, and having confess'd their sins, he baptized them in the river Jordan.

¹⁴ But after John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, spreading the good news of the kingdom of the Messiah. ¹⁵ "the time, said he, is accomplish'd, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel."

¹⁴ Jesus return'd by the influence of the spirit into Galilee, where his same quickly spread over all the country;

⁵ but they were the more vehement, saying, he promotes sedition by speading such doctrine thro' all Judea, from Galilee to this place.

¹ Jesus therefore knowing the Pharisees had heard that he made more disciples, and baptized more than John, ² (though Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples) he left Judea, ³ and returned into Galilee.

²² from his baptism by John, to the day of his assumption, we should chuse one to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

²² ye men of Israel attend to what I say; Jesus of Nazareth was a man whom God distinguished among you, by miracles, by prodigies, and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as you your selves also know:

²⁴ before his appearance, John had preach'd the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. ²⁵ and in the discharge of his mission, he said, "who do you think I am? I am not the Messias. but there comes another after me, whose shoes I am not worthy to untie."

²⁶ the king is inform'd of these things, to whom I address myself with the greater confidence, being persuaded he is fully apprized of these matters, that were far from being transacted in private.

²² but we should be glad to know your sentiments: for as to this sect, we are sensible it is every where inveigh'd against.

²³ Thus went Jesus about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all sorts of diseases and infirmities among the people: ²⁴ so that his fame was spread over all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were afflicted with any diseases or pains, demoniacs, lunatics, and paralytics; and he healed them. ²⁵ and a great multitude of people followed him from Galilee, from Decapolis, from Jerusalem, from Judea, and from about Jordan.

³⁵ And Jesus went about all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing diseases and disorders of every kind.

¹⁵ but Jesus perceiving their design, withdrew himself thence, accompany'd by great multitudes, and he healed all their sick,

²⁸ but if I exorcize devils by the spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is set up among you.

²¹ Then Jesus went thence, and retir'd towards the district of Tyre and Sidon. ²² and there came a woman of Canaan from those quarters, and cried out to him, have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously tormented by a demon. ²³ but Jesus not making her any answer, his disciples came and entreated him to grant her request; for, said they, she is very importunate with us. ²⁴ but he answered, my commission was only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. ²⁵ however she advanc'd, and throwing her self at his feet, cried, O Lord, assist me. ²⁶ but he answered, it is not just to take the childrens bread, and throw it to puppies. ²⁷ 'tis true, Lord, said she: yet even puppies eat of the crumbs which fall from their master's table. ²⁸ then Jesus answered her, O woman, great is thy faith: as you desire, be it done. and her daughter was healed from that very hour. ²⁹ Jesus having left that place, drew nigh to the sea of Galilee, and went up a mountain, where he sat down. ³⁰ there a great crowd of people came to him, bringing with them the lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and laid them down at Jesus feet, and he healed them: ³¹ insomuch that the people wondred when they perceived the dumb to speak, the maimed to be heal'd, the lame to walk, and the blind to see: and they glorified the God of Israel.

³⁸ and he said unto them, let us go into the neighbouring villages, that I may preach there likewise, for that was the design of my coming. ³⁹ and he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out demons.

⁷ But Jesus retired with his disciples towards the sea: where a great multitude followed him from Galilee, from Judea, ⁸ from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and the territory about Jordan, a considerable number of the inhabitants about Tyre and Sidon having heard of his great actions, came likewise to meet him. ⁹ wherefore, to avoid the inconveniences of the crowd, he order'd his disciples to get a small vessel ready to attend him. ¹⁰ for having healed abundance of people, all that were afflicted with any grievous distemper pressed upon him to touch him. ¹¹ and when the impure spirits saw him, they threw themselves at his feet, crying out, "thou art the son of God."

¹³ Jesus immediately gave them leave. and the impure spirits quitting the possessed, entred into the swine, and the whole herd, which were about two thousand, ran down a precipice into the sea, and were there stifled. ¹⁴ then they that fed the swine fled, and told the news to town and country. and they went out to see what had been done. ¹⁵ when they were come to Jesus, and saw him that had been possessed with the legion of demons, sitting in his clothes, and in his right mind, they were afraid.

⁶ they were so marvellously incredulous. so that He went all about to teach in the neighbouring villages.

⁵⁴ no sooner were they ashore, but the people, who presently perceiv'd it was Jesus, ⁵⁵ came flocking from all quarters, carrying their sick on their beds to the places where they heard he was: ⁵⁶ and to whatever cities, towns, or villages he went, they expos'd the sick in the publick streets, entreating him, they might but touch the border of his garment; for as many as did so, were recover'd.

²⁹ then said Jesus to her, for this expression, go thy way, the demon has left your daughter. ³⁰ accordingly she went home, where she found that the demon was indeed gone out of her daughter, and she was lying on the bed.

²² and the holy spirit descended upon him in a corporeal form like a dove. and a voice came from heaven, which said, thou art my beloved son, in thee I am well pleased.

¹⁸ "the spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

³³ now there was in the synagogue a man possess'd with the spirit of an impure demon, who roar'd out, in these words, let us alone; ³⁴ what business have you with us, Jesus of Nazareth? are you come to destroy us? I know who you are; the saint of God. ³⁵ but Jesus rebuk'd him, saying, be dumb, and come out of him. upon which the demon threw him down in the midst of the assembly, and came out, without doing him any harm. ³⁶ and they were all amazed, and said to one another, what's the meaning of this? with authority and power he commands the impure spirits, and they come out!

¹⁰ and they that were sent, being return'd to the house, they found the servant, who had been sick, in good health. ¹¹ The day following, he went into a city called Nain, accompanied by many of his disciples, and a great crowd of people. ¹² as he drew near the gate of the city, there was a dead man just then carrying out to be buried, who was his mother's only son, and she a widow: and many people of the town came with her. ¹³ when the Lord saw her, he was moved with compassion for her, and said to her, don't weep. ¹⁴ then advancing, he touch'd the bier, and the bearers standing still, he said, young man, arise, I command you. ¹⁵ and the deceased sat up, and began to speak, and Jesus delivered him to his mother. ¹⁶ all that were present were seized with dread, and glorified God, saying, a great prophet is risen up among us, and God has visited his people. ¹⁷ and his fame spread over all Judea and the neighbouring countrys.

²¹ at that very time, he cured several of their diseases and distempers, dispossessing evil spirits, and restoring sight to many that were blind. ²² then he gave them this answer, go, and tell John what you have seen, and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are healed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the gospel is proclaim'd to the poor. ²³ and blessed is he, who does not make me the occasion of his fall.

⁴² as the child was advancing, the demon threw him down, into convulsions: but Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, cured the child, and delivered him to his father.

⁵⁶ for the son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. and they went to another village.

² who came to Jesus by night, and said to him, rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher sent from God: for no man can perform the miracles that you do, except God be with him.

³⁴ for he whom God hath sent, saith nothing but what is divine: for God hath given him the spirit without restriction.

²⁷ work not for the food which perisheth, but for that which endureth unto everlasting life, and which the son of man shall give unto you, for to him it is that the father, that is God, has given his credentials.

³² Jesus answered them, many good works have I shewed you from my father; for which of those works would you stone me?

³⁶ how can you say that I blaspheme, I whom the father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, because I said I am the son of God? ³⁷ if I do not the works of my father, believe me not. ³⁸ but if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know and believe that the father is in me, and I in him.

³² but, alas, the time is coming, yea, is already come, when ye shall be dispers'd every one to his own retreat, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the father is with me.

²⁶ the kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ." ²⁷ for it was truly against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, that Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, united themselves in this city,

⁹ thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy peers."

¹⁴ Since then the children were made subject to a state of mortality, so he himself likewise was subject to the same condition: that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; ¹⁵ and deliver them who thro' fear of death were all their life-time in a state of slavery.

⁸ Be temperate, be vigilant: for your adversary the Devil goes about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

⁸ he that lives in sin, imitates the devil; for the devil was a sinner from the beginning. for this purpose the son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

² according as they were delivered to us by persons, who were all along eye-witnesses, and had a share in the transactions themselves:

⁴⁸ you are witnesses of these things.

²⁷ and ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

⁸ but ye shall receive the influence of the holy spirit, which will descend upon you: and ye shall be witnesses for me, in Jerusalem, in all Judea, and in Samaria, and to the remotest part of the earth.

²³ him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by means of the wicked, have crucified and slain: whom God hath raised up, ²⁴ having delivered him from the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be overpower'd by it.

³² 'tis this Jesus whom God hath raised up, of which we all are witnesses.

¹⁴ but ye renounced him that was holy and just; you interceeded for the life of a murderer, ¹⁵ but killed the prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.

¹⁰ and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you entirely recover'd.

³⁰ the God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew, and hanged on a tree. ³¹ him hath God rais'd by his power to be the author of salvation, by giving repentance to Israel, and the remission of their sins. ³² and we are his witnesses in what we say, and so is the holy spirit, whom God hath given to those that obey him.

⁵² was there ever any prophet whom your fathers did not persecute? have they not slain those who predicted the coming of that just person whom you have so lately betrayed and murder'd?

⁴¹ not to all the people, but to those witnesses, which God had before chosen: to us, I say, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.

²⁷ as for the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and their senators, by their not knowing who he was, and by condemning him, they have accomplished the declarations of the prophets, which are read every sabbath-day: ²⁸ although they could not convict him of any thing capital, yet they demanded of Pilate, that he should be put to death. ²⁹ after they had accomplished all that was written concerning him, he was taken down from the cross, and laid in a sepulchre:

³¹ and for many days he was seen by those, who had accompany'd him from Galilee to Jerusalem: and they are now his witnesses to the people.

¹³ Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us. (for it is written, " cursed is every one, that hangeth upon a tree.")

²⁴ he himself cancel'd our sins by the crucifixion of his body, that we being set free from sin, might live in the service of virtue. it is by his bruises that you were healed:

¹ The sabbath being over, and the first day of the week beginning to dawn, Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, came to see the sepulchre. ² now there had been a great earthquake; for an angel of the lord descending from heaven, was come, and had rolled away the stone from the door, and was sitting upon it.

²⁴ having delivered him from the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be overpower'd by it.

³⁰ but God raised him from the dead: ³¹ and for many days he was seen by those, who had accompany'd him from Galilee to Jerusalem: and they are now his witnesses to the people.

³¹ because he has fix'd the day, when he will judge in equity, by that man, whom he has appointed thereto: of which he has given full proof to all the world, by having raised him from the dead."

⁴ but as to his holy spirit miraculously declared to be the son of God, by his resurrection from the dead:

²⁴ but for us also, to whom it shall be accounted, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead, ²⁵ who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

⁴ therefore we are buried with him by being plunged into a sort of death: that as Christ was raised up from the dead into a state of glory with the father, even so we also should proceed to a new state of life. ⁵ for if we resembled him with regard to death, certainly we shall likewise do so with regard to his resurrection: ⁶ considering this, that our vicious passions were crucified with him, that the body of sin being destroyed, we might not any longer be vassals to sin. ⁷ for by its being dead, we are set free from sin. ⁸ since then we died with Christ, we are persuaded that we shall also live with him: ⁹ knowing that Christ being raised from the dead, is to die no more; death hath no more dominion over him. ¹⁰ for as to his death, he died upon the account of sin once for all; but as to his being alive, he lives to the glory of God for ever. ¹¹ in like manner consider your selves as dead to sin; but alive to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

¹¹ for if the spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead, dwell in you; he that raised up Christ from the dead, shall likewise restore your mortal bodies to life, by his spirit that dwelleth in you.

³ I acquainted you chiefly with what I received myself, that Christ died for our sins, as the scriptures foretold: ⁴ that he was buried, and rose again the third day, as the scriptures foretold:

¹² Now if it has been declared, that Christ rose from the dead, how comes it, that some among you assert, "there is no resurrection of the dead?" ¹³ for if there be no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. ¹⁴ and if Christ be not risen, then our preaching is empty talk, and your faith even meer amusement. ¹⁵ yea, and we are no better than enthusiastic impostors by affirming that God raised up Christ, when he never did raise him up. ¹⁶ for if the dead are not raised, then was not Christ raised: ¹⁷ and if Christ was not raised, your faith is meer illusion, your sins are not yet forgiven. ¹⁸ then they too who died christians, are entirely lost. ¹⁹ if our expectations as christians all terminate in this life, we of all men are most to be pitied. ²⁰ But Christ is actually risen, as previous to those who were dead.

¹⁴ knowing that he who raised up the Lord Jesus, shall raise up me also by Jesus, and shall present me with you:

²¹ it is by him that you believe in God, who has raised him from the dead, and invested him with glory, that your faith and your hope might be in God.

³⁰ and as he was at table with them, he took bread, and gave thanks, then brake it and gave it to them;

⁴¹ but as they were diffident of so joyful an event, and still in amaze, he said to them, have you any thing here to eat? ⁴² and they gave him a piece of broil'd fish, and of a honey-comb; ⁴³ which he took, and did eat in their presence.

¹⁷ even the spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees nor knows him: but ye shall know him, for he shall dwell with you, and shall be in you.

²² Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, why Lord, will you show your self to us, and not to the world?

¹⁶ it was not you that chose me, but I that chose you, and establish'd you, that your travels may be fruitful, and your fruit be lasting: so that whatever ye shall ask of the father for my sake, he will give it you.

¹ The first day of the week early in morning Mary Magdalene, when it was yet dusky, came to the sepulchre, and found the stone was taken away from the sepulchre. ² upon this she went in great haste to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, they have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him. ³ Peter immediately departed, and that other disciple, to go to the sepulchre. ⁴ they both set out together: but the other disciple out-ran Peter, and came first to the cave, ⁵ where stooping down he saw the linen clothes lying; but did not go in. ⁶ Simon Peter who followed him, being come, went into the cave, and saw the linen clothes lying there; ⁷ as for the napkin that had been put about his head, it was not in the same place as the linen clothes, but lay folded up by it self. ⁸ then the other disciple, who arriv'd first, went into the cave likewise, and he saw, and believed what Mary had said. ⁹ for as yet they did not understand from the scripture, that he was to rise again from the dead. ¹⁰ After this the disciples return'd to their own home. ¹¹ but Mary stood at the entrance of the cave weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down to look into the sepulchre, ¹² and saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, the one at the head, the other at the feet. ¹³ and they said to her, woman, why do you weep? "because, said she, they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him." ¹⁴ having thus said, she turned about, and saw Jesus standing, but knew not that it was Jesus. ¹⁵ Jesus said to her, woman, why do you weep? who do you look for? she supposing him to be the gardener, said to him, sir, if it be you that have convey'd him away; tell me where you have laid him, and I will take care to have him remov'd. ¹⁶ Jesus said to her, Mary! she bowing her self, cry'd rabboni! ¹⁷ that is to say, master! Jesus said to her, touch me not: for I am not yet ascended to my father: but go to my brethren, and say to them, "I ascend unto my father and your father, even my God and your God." ¹⁸ so Mary Magdalene went and told the disciples, that she had seen the Lord, and that he had said these things to her. ¹⁹ The same day at evening, being the first day of the week, the doors of the house where the disciples were, being shut, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, peace be with you. ²⁰ and when he had so said, he show'd them his hands and his side. the disciples were therefore extremely glad when they saw it was the Lord. ²¹ then said Jesus to them again, "peace be with you: as my father hath sent me, even so send I you."

¹³ Jesus then advanc'd, and taking bread, he gave them some, and fish likewise.

² after he had given the apostles he had chosen, the orders they were to execute by the holy spirit. ³ to whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion, of which they had many proofs, during the forty days he appear'd to them, and inform'd them about the reign of the Messias:

³⁹ we are witnesses of all his transactions, both in Judea, and at Jerusalem. however, they put him to death, even that of the cross.

³¹ When the son of man shall come in his majesty, accompanied with all his holy angels, he shall sit upon the throne of his glory. ³² then all nations shall be assembled before him, and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates his sheep from the goats. ³³ and he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. ³⁴ the king shall say to those on his right hand, come, ye blessed of my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. ³⁵ for I was prest with hunger, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: ³⁶ naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye took care of me: I was in prison, and ye visited me. ³⁷ then will the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when did we see thee in hunger, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? ³⁸ when did we see thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? ³⁹ or when did we see thee sick, or in prison, and visited thee? ⁴⁰ and the king will reply, I declare unto you, your having done this for one of the least of these my brethren, is the same thing as doing it for me. ⁴¹ then will he say to those on the left, depart from me ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. ⁴² for I was prest with hunger, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink: ⁴³ I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. ⁴⁴ then will they answer, Lord, when did we see thee in hunger, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? ⁴⁵ to this he will reply, I declare unto you, your not doing this for one of the least of these, is the same thing as not doing it for me. ⁴⁶ and these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

¹⁹ go and instruct all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost: ²⁰ teaching them to observe every thing which I have enjoin'd you: and be assured I shall be always with you to the end of the world.

¹⁵ Then he said to them, go ye into all parts of the world, and preach the gospel to all mankind. ¹⁶ he that believeth, and is baptized, shall be saved; but he that disbelieves, shall be condemned.

⁴⁷ and that repentance and remission of sins should be preach'd in his name, among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. ⁴⁸ you are witnesses of these things.

²² besides, the father judgeth no man; but hath committed the full power of judging unto the son:

²¹ upon seeing him, Peter said to Jesus, Lord, and what shall become of him? ²² Jesus said, if I will have him stay till I come, what have you to do with that? do you follow me.

² after he had given the apostles he had chosen, the orders they were to execute by the holy spirit.

¹⁹ but Peter and John made answer, do you yourselves judge, whether it be right in the sight of God, to obey you rather than God. ²⁰ for we cannot avoid publishing what we have seen and heard.

²⁰ go, stand in the temple, and declare to the people, the whole doctrine of life.

²⁹ then Peter and the other apostles made answer, we ought to obey God rather than men.

⁹ for to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living. ¹⁰ why then dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou think contemptibly of thy brother? since we shall all of us be brought before the judgment-seat of Christ.

¹⁰ for we must all appear before the tribunal of Christ; that every one may receive the retribution, according as his actions in the body were either good or evil.

¹ I conjure you in the name of God, and of the Lord Jesus Christ, who is to judge the living and the dead, at his appearance in his kingdom,

⁸ I have nothing more to do, but to receive the crown of virtue reserv'd for me, which the Lord, the just judge, will give me in that day: and not only to me, but to those also, who have long'd for his appearance.

⁵ but they will be call'd to account by him, who is ready to judge both the living and the dead.

⁷ See! he is coming on the clouds; and every eye shall see him, even they who pierced him: then all the tribes of the earth will smite their breasts at the sight: even so it will be.

¹¹ Then I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose presence the earth and the heaven fled away, so that they disappear'd. ¹² and I saw the dead, small and great, stand before the throne; the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out. of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. ¹³ the sea gave up the dead which were in it; death and the grave delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every one according to their works. ¹⁴ and death and the grave were cast into the lake of fire: this is the second death. ¹⁵ and whosoever was not found written in the book of life, was cast into the lake of fire.

¹² behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

¹⁶ he that believeth, and is baptized, shall be saved; but he that disbelieves, shall be condemned.

²⁵ then Jesus said to them, how stupidly incredulous are you not to believe things that have been all predicted by the prophets! ²⁶ was not the Messiah to have suffer'd thus, and after that enter into his glory? ²⁷ then beginning at Moses he explain'd all the passages there, and in all the prophets, which related to himself.

⁴⁴ then he said, this is what I told you, while I was yet with you, that what has been written concerning me in the law of Moses, in the prophets, and in the psalms, must be all accomplished. ⁴⁵ then he open'd their minds to make them understand the scriptures, and said to them, ⁴⁶ thus it is written, and thus it behov'd Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

⁴⁵ Philip meeting with Nathanael, said to him, we have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

¹⁴ but as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the son of man be lifted up: ¹⁵ that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁶ for God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have eternal life. ¹⁷ for God sent not his son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

³⁹ You search the scriptures, for you think by their means to have eternal life, and they are the very writings which do testify of me. ⁴⁰ yet you will not come to me, that ye may have life.

³¹ but these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Messias, the son of God, and that believing ye might have life through his name.

³⁸ Peter replied, repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the holy spirit.

¹⁶ it is the faith which we have in him, that has procured strength to this man whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him, hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

¹⁸ but thus it is that God has accomplished what he had foretold by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer.

¹⁰ and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you entirely recover'd. ¹¹ this is the stone which was rejected by you builders, but is become the chief of the angle. ¹² salvation is not to be had by any other: for there is no other name under heaven given to men whereby we can be saved.

³⁸ know then, my brethren, it is by him, that the remission of sins is offer'd to you: ³⁹ by him, every one who believes, is purged from all that guilt, for which the law of Moses had made no such provision.

¹⁸ and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and partake of the inheritance of the saints, by believing on me."

²² but by the divine favour I am still preserv'd alive, testifying to the small and to the great nothing but what Moses and the prophets have predicted should happen: "that Christ should suffer:

¹ Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God, through our Lord Jesus Christ,

²³ for the wages of sin is death: but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

¹ Sentence of death therefore shall not pass upon those christians who do not lead a vicious life.

³⁴ who shall condemn them? shall Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, and makes intercession for us?

¹¹ for the scripture saith, "whosoever believeth on him, shall not be ashamed."

²² but the scripture has declar'd all guilty of sin, that the blessing promised on condition of faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.

⁷ who has by his blood obtained for us the redemption, even the forgiveness of our sins, according to the riches of his grace,

¹⁴ It is by him, that we have obtain'd the redemption, even the remission of our sins:

² when all of a sudden there came a sound from heaven, like that of an impetuous wind, which filled all the house where they were. ³ and there appeared several little flames, and sat upon each of them: ⁴ and they were all filled with the holy ghost, and began to speak in different languages, as the spirit gave them utterance.

³¹ When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled, trembled; they were all filled with the holy spirit, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

¹⁵ who upon their arrival, prayed for them that they might receive the holy spirit. ¹⁶ (for as yet he had not descended on any of them: they having only been baptized in the name of the Lord ¹⁷ Jesus) the apostles therefore gave them imposition of hands, and they received the holy spirit.

¹⁵ and while I was speaking to them, the holy spirit descended upon them, as it did on us, at the beginning.

⁸ God who knows their hearts has granted them a testimonial, by giving them the holy spirit, even as he did to us:

⁶ and Paul having given them imposition of hands, the holy spirit came upon them, and they spoke foreign languages, and prophesied:

³³ therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the father the promise of the holy spirit, he has diffused that spirit, the effects of which ye now see and hear.

²³ then he invited them in, and they lodged there. On the morrow, Peter departed with them, and some of his brethren from Joppa accompanied him.

³ and ask'd him, why did you go to eat with the uncircumcised?

¹⁵ and while I was speaking to them, the holy spirit descended upon them, as it did on us, at the beginning. ¹⁶ then I remember'd that expression of the Lord, "John baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the holy spirit." ¹⁷ if therefore God has bestow'd the same favour upon them, as on us, after we had believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, how could I make any opposition to the divine will? ¹⁸ Having heard this, they were appeas'd, and glorified God, saying, God has then granted salvation likewise to the gentiles, on the terms of their repentance.

¹³ Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us. (for it is written, " cursed is every one, that hangeth upon a tree.") ¹⁴ that the blessing promised to Abraham might come on the Gentiles thro' Jesus Christ; that we by believing might receive the spirit that was promised.

¹¹ Wherefore remember that you were heretofore Gentiles, being denominated the uncircumcised, by those who are the circumcised by a manual operation;

⁵ which preceeding was not discover'd to men, as now it is to his holy apostles and prophets by the spirit; to wit,

¹³ Even you, who were in a dying sinful state, and were uncircumcised Gentiles, has God raised to life, as he did Christ, having pardoned all your sins: ¹⁴ and cancell'd the obligation of the ceremonial law, which was disadvantageous to us, removing that which divided us, and nailing it to the cross.

¹⁷ they that believe shall be endued with these miraculous gifts: in my name they shall cast out demons: they shall speak new languages:

⁴ and they were all filled with the holy ghost, and began to speak in different languages, as the spirit gave them utterance.

¹¹ Cretes, and Arabians, we hear them all proclaiming in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

²⁰ Brethren, be not childish in understanding: be as innocent as babes, but use your understanding like men. ²¹ in the law it is written, " with men of other tongues and other lips, will I speak unto this people: and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord." ²² wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to believers, but to unbelievers: but expounding the prophets, not for unbelievers so much as for those who believe. ²³ when therefore the whole church is assembled, and all speak different languages, if such as are either unlearned, or are unbelievers should come in, will they not say you are all mad? ²⁴ but if you all expound, and an unbeliever, or one unlearned come in, he is examin'd by all, he is tryed by all: ²⁵ the secrets of his heart become manifest; and so falling down on his face, he will worship God, and declare that God is certainly amongst you.

¹² but when they had embraced the doctrine of Philip, concerning the kingdom of the Messias, and the authority of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

³⁶ as they pursued their journey, they came to a place of water: and the eunuch said, see, here is water; what should hinder my being baptized?

¹⁵ and while I was speaking to them, the holy spirit descended upon them, as it did on us, at the beginning. ¹⁶ then I remember'd that expression of the Lord, "John baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized with the holy spirit." ¹⁷ if therefore God has bestow'd the same favour upon them, as on us, after we had believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, how could I make any opposition to the divine will?

¹¹ and he received the sign of circumcision, as a seal of the justification by that faith, which the uncircumcised have: that he might be the father of all those who believe, tho' they are uncircumcised, that it might be accounted to them also for righteousness:

¹² In reality there is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile: they have all the same Lord, who is bountiful to all that call upon him.

² (though Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples) he left Judea,

⁴⁰ so that when the Samaritans were come to him, they desired him to stay with them: and he stay'd there two days.

¹⁶ (for as yet he had not descended on any of them: they having only been baptized in the name of the Lord

¹⁵ so that having been baptized with her family, she made us this request, if you think me sincere in my profession, pray come and lodge at my house; and she prevail'd upon us.

⁵ when they heard this, they were initiated by baptism into the christian profession.

¹³ and I of Christ." is the school of Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were you baptized into the name of Paul? ¹⁴ I thank God, I baptized none of you, except Crispus and Gaius: ¹⁵ lest any should say, I had baptized into mine own name. ¹⁶ true, I baptized the family of Stephanas: but I don't know that I baptized any other besides. ¹⁷ for Christ did not send me to baptize: but to preach the gospel: tho' not with the preaching of the wise, lest the cross of Christ should have been hinder'd in its efficacy.

²⁷ for as many of you as have been baptized into christianity, have been invested as christians.
