¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him from them all.

¹⁹ He will rescue you from six calamities; no harm will touch you in seven.

⁹ And now they mock me in song; I have become a byword among them. ¹⁰ They abhor me and keep far from me; they do not hesitate to spit in my face. ¹¹ Because God has unstrung my bow and afflicted me, they have cast off restraint in my presence. ¹² The rabble arises at my right; they lay snares for my feet and build siege ramps against me. ¹³ They tear up my path; they profit from my destruction, with no one to restrain them. ¹⁴ They advance as through a wide breach; through the ruins they keep rolling in. ¹⁵ Terrors are turned loose against me; they drive away my dignity as by the wind, and my prosperity has passed like a cloud. ¹⁶ And now my soul is poured out within me; days of affliction grip me. ¹⁷ Night pierces my bones, and my gnawing pains never rest. ¹⁸ With great force He grasps my garment; He seizes me by the collar of my tunic. ¹⁹ He throws me into the mud, and I have become like dust and ashes. ²⁰ I cry out to You for help, but You do not answer; when I stand up, You merely look at me. ²¹ You have ruthlessly turned on me; You oppose me with Your strong hand. ²² You snatch me up into the wind and drive me before it; You toss me about in the storm. ²³ Yes, I know that You will bring me down to death, to the place appointed for all the living. ²⁴ Yet no one stretches out his hand to a ruined man when he cries for help in his distress. ²⁵ Have I not wept for those in trouble? Has my soul not grieved for the needy? ²⁶ But when I hoped for good, evil came; when I looked for light, darkness fell. ²⁷ I am churning within and cannot rest; days of affliction confront me. ²⁸ I go about blackened, but not by the sun. I stand up in the assembly and cry for help. ²⁹ I have become a brother of jackals, a companion of ostriches. ³⁰ My skin grows black and peels, and my bones burn with fever. ³¹ My harp is tuned to mourning and my flute to the sound of weeping.

¹² So the LORD blessed Job’s latter days more than his first. He owned 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys.

⁴ I sought the LORD, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears.

⁶ This poor man called out, and the LORD heard him; He saved him from all his troubles.

¹⁷ The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears; He delivers them from all their troubles.

²⁰ Though You have shown me many troubles and misfortunes, You will revive me once again. Even from the depths of the earth You will bring me back up.

¹⁶ For though a righteous man may fall seven times, he still gets up; but the wicked stumble in bad times.

³³ I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!”

²² strengthening the souls of the disciples and encouraging them to continue in the faith. “We must endure many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,” they said.

⁷ Now we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this surpassingly great power is from God and not from us. ⁸ We are hard pressed on all sides, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; ⁹ persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed. ¹⁰ We always carry around in our body the death of the Lord Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. ¹¹ For we who are alive are always consigned to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our mortal body. ¹² So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

¹⁷ For our light and momentary affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory that is far beyond comparison.

²³ Are they servants of Christ? I am speaking like I am out of my mind, but I am so much more: in harder labor, in worse beatings, in more imprisonments, in frequent danger of death. ²⁴ Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. ²⁵ Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked. I spent a night and a day in the open sea. ²⁶ In my frequent journeys, I have been in danger from rivers and from bandits, in danger from my countrymen and from the Gentiles, in danger in the city and in the country, in danger on the sea and among false brothers, ²⁷ in labor and toil and often without sleep, in hunger and thirst and often without food, in cold and exposure.

³ so that none of you would be shaken by these trials. For you know that we are destined for this. ⁴ Indeed, when we were with you, we kept warning you that we would suffer persecution; and as you know, it has come to pass.

¹¹ my persecutions, and the sufferings that came upon me in Antioch, Iconium, and Lystra. What persecutions I endured! Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them. ¹² Indeed, all who desire to live godly lives in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

³³ who through faith conquered kingdoms, administered justice, and gained what was promised; who shut the mouths of lions, ³⁴ quenched the raging fire, and escaped the edge of the sword; who gained strength from weakness, became mighty in battle, and put foreign armies to flight. ³⁵ Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were tortured and refused their release, so that they might gain a better resurrection. ³⁶ Still others endured mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. ³⁷ They were stoned, they were sawed in two, they were put to the test, they were put to death by the sword. They went around in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, oppressed, and mistreated. ³⁸ The world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, and hid in caves and holes in the ground.

¹⁰ My brothers, as an example of patience in affliction, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. ¹¹ See how blessed we consider those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen the outcome from the Lord. He is full of compassion and mercy.

¹² Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial that has come upon you, as though something strange were happening to you. ¹³ But rejoice that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed at the revelation of His glory.

¹⁴ “Sir,” I answered, “you know.” So he replied, “These are the ones who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. ¹⁵ For this reason, they are before the throne of God and serve Him day and night in His temple; and the One seated on the throne will spread His tabernacle over them. ¹⁶ ‘Never again will they hunger, and never will they thirst; nor will the sun beat down upon them, nor any scorching heat.’ ¹⁷ For the Lamb in the center of the throne shepherds them. ‘He will lead them to springs of living water,’ and ‘God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’”
