²⁶ And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God. And he took a great stone and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of Jehovah.

¹⁸ And Jacob rose up early in the morning and took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil upon the top of it. ¹⁹ And he called the name of that place Bethel, but the name of the city was Luz at first.
²⁰ And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go and will give me bread to eat and garments to put on, ²¹ so that I come again to my father's house in peace and Jehovah will be my God, ²² then this stone, which I have set up as a pillar, will be God's house. And of all that you will give me I will surely give the tenth to you.

⁴ And they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hand and the rings which were in their ears. And Jacob hid them under the oak that was by Shechem.

⁸ And Deborah Rebekah's nurse died and she was buried below Bethel under the oak. And the name of it was called Allon-bacuth.

⁴ And Moses wrote all the words of Jehovah and rose up early in the morning and built an altar below the mountain and twelve pillars, according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

²⁴ And it happened, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished, ²⁵ that Moses commanded the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, saying, ²⁶ Take this book of the law and put it by the side of the ark of the covenant of Jehovah your* God, that it may be there for a witness against you.

³ and command you* them, saying, Take for you* here out of the midst of the Jordan, out of the place where the priests' feet stood firm, twelve stones and carry them over with you* and lay them down in the lodging-place where you* will lodge this night.
⁴ Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the sons of Israel, a man out of every tribe. ⁵ And Joshua said to them, Pass over before the ark of Jehovah your* God into the midst of the Jordan and take up every man of you* a stone upon his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel, ⁶ that this may be a sign among you*, that, when your* children ask in time to come, saying, What do you* mean by these stones? ⁷ Then you* will say to them, Because the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah. When it passed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones will be for a memorial to the sons of Israel everlasting.
⁸ And the sons of Israel did so as Joshua commanded and took up twelve stones out of the midst of the Jordan, as Jehovah spoke to Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Israel and they carried them over with them to the place where they lodged and laid them down there.
⁹ And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests who bore the ark of the covenant stood and they are there to this day.

²⁰ And those twelve stones, which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up in Gilgal. ²¹ And he spoke to the sons of Israel, saying, When your* sons will ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What do these stones mean?
²² Then you* will let your* sons know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land. ²³ For Jehovah your* God dried up the waters of the Jordan from before you*, until you* were passed over, as Jehovah your* God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were passed over, ²⁴ that all the peoples of the earth may know the hand of Jehovah, that it is mighty, that you* may fear Jehovah your* God forever.

⁶ And all the men of Shechem assembled themselves together and all the Beth-millo and went and made Abimelech king by the oak of the pillar that was in Shechem.
