²² And they will be gathered together as prisoners are gathered in the pit and will be shut up in the prison. And after many days they will be visited.

¹⁶ And these five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah. ¹⁷ And it was told Joshua, saying, The five kings are found hidden in the cave at Makkedah.

²² Then Joshua said, Open the mouth of the cave and bring forth those five kings to me out of the cave. ²³ And they did so and brought out those five kings to him out of the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, the king of Eglon.
²⁴ And it happened, when they brought out those kings to Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel and said to the chiefs of the men of war who went with him, Come near, put your* feet upon the necks of these kings. And they came near and put their feet upon the necks of them.
²⁵ And Joshua said to them, Do not fear, nor be dismayed. Be strong and of good courage, for thus will Jehovah do to all your* enemies against whom you* fight. ²⁶ And afterward Joshua killed* them and put them to death and hanged them on five trees. And they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

¹⁹ And men will go into the caves of the rocks and into the holes of the earth, from before the terror of Jehovah and from the glory of his majesty, when he arises to shake the earth mightily.

⁴ They will only bow down under the prisoners and will fall under the slain.
For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

¹⁷ Fear and the pit and the snare, are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth.

²² But this is a people robbed and plundered. They are all of them snared in holes and they are hid in prison-houses. They are for a prey and none delivers, for a spoil and none says, Restore.

⁶ Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the pit of Malchijah the king's son, that was in the court of the guard. And they let Jeremiah down with cords. And in the pit there was no water, but mud and Jeremiah sank in the mud.
⁷ Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the pit (the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin), ⁸ Ebed-melech went forth out of the king's house and spoke to the king, saying, ⁹ My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet whom they have cast into the pit. And he is likely to die in the place where he is because of the famine, for there is no more bread in the city.
¹⁰ Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from here thirty men with you and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the pit before he dies.
¹¹ So Ebed-melech took the men with him and went into the house of the king under the treasury and took from there rags and worn-out garments and let them down by cords into the pit to Jeremiah. ¹² And Ebed-melech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, Now put these rags and worn-out garments under your armpits under the cords. And Jeremiah did so. ¹³ So they drew up Jeremiah with the cords and took him up out of the pit. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

⁸ After many days you will be visited. In the latter years you will come into the land that is brought back from the sword, that is gathered out of many peoples, upon the mountains of Israel, which have been a continual waste, but it is brought forth out of the peoples and they will dwell securely, all of them.

¹¹ As for you also, because of the blood of your covenant I have set free your prisoners from the pit in which is no water.
