⁷ And they cried to Jehovah, He put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea on them and covered them. And your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt. And you lived in the wilderness a long time.

¹⁰ And Pharaoh drew near, the sons of Israel lifted up their eyes. And, behold, the Egyptians marched after them. And they were very afraid. And the sons of Israel cried out to Jehovah.

²⁰ And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. And it was a cloudy and dark night, but it lit up the night, so that the one did not come near the other all night.

²⁷ And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea. And the sea returned to its strength when the morning appeared. And the Egyptians fled against it. And Jehovah overthrew the Egyptians in the middle of the sea. ²⁸ And the waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen, all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them. There did not remain so much as one of them.

³¹ And Israel saw that great work which Jehovah did upon the Egyptians. And the people feared Jehovah, and believed Jehovah and His servant Moses.

³³ And your sons shall feed in the wilderness forty years and bear your fornications, until your dead bodies have wasted in the wilderness. ³⁴ According to the number of the days in which you searched the land, forty days, each day for a year you shall bear your iniquities, forty years; and you shall know My alienation.

⁴⁶ So you stayed in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you remained.

³⁴ Or has God gone forth to take a nation for Himself from the midst of a nation, by trials, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all that Jehovah your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

² And Moses called to all Israel and said to them, You have seen all that Jehovah did before your eyes in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and to all his servants, and to all his land.

⁶ For the sons of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, until all the people, the men of war, who came out of Egypt, were destroyed, because they did not obey the voice of Jehovah. To them Jehovah swore that He would not show them the land which Jehovah swore to their fathers that He would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey.

¹² And You led them in the day by a cloudy pillar, and in the night by a pillar of fire, to give them light in the way in which they should go. ¹³ And You came down on Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from Heaven, and gave them right judgments and true laws, good statutes and commandments. ¹⁴ And You made known to them Your holy sabbath, and commanded them commandments, statutes, and laws, by the hand of Moses Your servant. ¹⁵ And You gave them bread from the heavens for their hunger, and brought forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst. And You promised them that they should go in to possess the land which You had sworn to give them. ¹⁶ But they and our fathers acted proudly and hardened their necks, and did not listen to Your commandments. ¹⁷ And they refused to obey, neither were they mindful of Your wonders which You did among them. But they hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But You are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and did not forsake them. ¹⁸ Yea, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt, and had worked great blasphemies, ¹⁹ yet You in Your great mercies did not forsake them in the wilderness. The pillar of the cloud did not depart from them by day to lead them in the way, nor the pillar of fire by night, to show them light and the way in which they should go. ²⁰ You also gave Your good Spirit to teach them, and did not withhold Your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst. ²¹ And forty years You sustained them in the wilderness. They lacked nothing; their clothes did not become old, and their feet did not swell.

⁹ when your fathers tempted Me, tested Me, and saw My work. ¹⁰ For forty years I was grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people who go astray in their hearts, and they have not known My ways;

¹⁷ The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and exalted the people in their residency in the land of Egypt, and He brought them out of it with a high arm. ¹⁸ And about the time of forty years He tenderly bore them in the wilderness.

¹⁷ But with whom was He grieved forty years? Was it not with those who had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the wilderness?
