¹¹ Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by completely destroying them. And shall you be delivered?

⁴ And the king of Assyria found treachery in Hoshea, for he had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and had brought no taxes to the king of Assyria, as before, year by year. And the king of Assyria shut him up and bound him in prison. ⁵ And the king of Assyria went up into all the land. And he went up to Samaria and besieged it three years. ⁶ In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria. And he placed them in Halah, and in Habor by the river Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

³³ Has any of the gods of the nations at all delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? ³⁴ Where are the gods of Hamath and of Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? ³⁵ Who among all the gods of the lands have delivered their land out of my hand, that Jehovah should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

⁷ Yet he does not plan this, nor does his heart think so. For it is in his heart to destroy and cut off not a few nations. ⁸ For he says, Are not my commanders all like kings? ⁹ Is not Calno like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols, and their graven images more than Jerusalem's and Samaria's; ¹¹ shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her idols? ¹² And it will be, when the Lord has broken off all His work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the proud heart of the king of Assyria and the glory of his high looks. ¹³ For he says, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am wise. And I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the people like a strong man. ¹⁴ And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the people; and as one gathers eggs that are left, I have gathered all the earth; and there was none who moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

¹⁷ who made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed its cities; who did not open the house for his prisoners?

¹⁸ Let not Hezekiah persuade you, saying, Jehovah will deliver us. Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? ¹⁹ Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? And when have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? ²⁰ Who among all the gods of these lands have delivered their land out of my hand, that Jehovah should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

¹⁸ Truly, O Jehovah, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their land, ¹⁹ and have cast their gods into the fire, for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; so they have destroyed them.
