¹² He also said to him who had invited him, When you give a dinner or a supper, do not invite your friends, nor your brothers, nor your relatives, nor your rich neighbors; they might probally invite you, and you will be repaid for this.

⁴⁶ For if you love only those who love you, what reward will you have? Do not even the publicans do the same thing?

¹ BE careful concerning your alms, not to do them in the presence of men, merely that they may see them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven. ² Therefore when you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, just as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the market places, so that they may be glorified by men. Truly I say to you, that they have already received their reward. ³ But when you give alms, let not your left hand know what your right hand is doing; ⁴ So that your alms may be done secretly, and your Father who sees in secret, shall himself reward you openly.

¹⁶ When you fast, do not look sad like the hypocrites; for they disfigure their faces, so that they may appear to men that they are fasting. Truly I say to you, that they have already received their reward. ¹⁷ But you, when you fast, wash your face and anoint your head; ¹⁸ So that it may not appear to men that you are fasting, but to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret, he will reward you.

⁵³ He has filled the hungry with good things; and dismissed the rich empty.

³² For if you love those who love you, what is your favor? for even sinners love those who love them. ³³ And if you do good only to those who do good to you, what is your favor? for sinners also do the same. ³⁴ And if you lend only to him from whom you expect to be paid back, what is your favor? for sinners also lend to sinners, to be paid back likewise. ³⁵ But love your enemies, and do good to them, and lend, and do not cut off any manÆs hope; so your reward will increase, and you will become sons of the Highest; for he is gracious to the wicked and the cruel. ³⁶ Be therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

¹ MY brethren, do not, with hypocrisy, uphold the glorious faith of our LORD Jesus Christ. ² For if there should enter into your synagogue a man with gold rings and costly garments, and there should also enter a poor man in soiled clothing; ³ And you should attend to the one who wears the beautiful clothing, and say to him, Sit here in a good place; and say to the poor man, Stand up there, or sit here before our footstool; ⁴ Are you not then showing partiality, and thereby give preference to evil thoughts? ⁵ Hear this, my beloved brethren, Has not God chosen the poor of the world who are rich in faith, to be heirs of the kingdom which God has promised to those who love him? ⁶ But you have despised the poor. Do not rich men exalt themselves over you and drag you before the judgment seat?
