³⁸ And He said to them in His teaching, Be careful of the scribes, those desiring to walk about in robes, and greetings in the markets,

⁵ And when you pray, you shall not be as the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the open streets so that they may be seen of men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward.

¹⁷ But beware of men. For they will betray you to sanhedrins, and they will flog you in their synagogues.

¹ Then Jesus spoke to the crowd and to His disciples, ² saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sat down on Moses' seat. ³ Then all things, whatever they tell you to keep, keep and do. But do not do according to their works, for they say, and do not do. ⁴ For they bind heavy and hard to bear burdens, and lay them on the shoulders of men, but they do not desire to move them with their finger. ⁵ And they do all their works to be seen by men. And they make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their robes. ⁶ And they love the first couch in the suppers, and the first seats in the synagogues, ⁷ and the greetings in the markets, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

² And He taught them many things in parables, and said to them in His teaching:

⁴³ Woe to you, Pharisees! For you love the chief seat in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces.

⁷ And He spoke a parable to those who had been invited, noting how they were choosing out the chief seats, saying to them, ⁸ When you are invited by anyone to wedding feasts, do not recline at the chief seat lest one more honorable than you be invited by him, ⁹ and coming, he who invited you will say to you, Give this one place. And then you begin with shame to take the last place. ¹⁰ But when you are invited, going in, recline at the last place, so that when he who has invited you may come, he may say to you, Friend, go up higher. Then glory will be to you before those reclining with you. ¹¹ For everyone exalting himself will be humbled, and the one humbling himself will be exalted.

⁴⁵ And as all the people were listening, He said to His disciples, ⁴⁶ Beware of the scribes, those desiring to walk about in long robes, and liking greetings in the markets, and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief couches in the suppers, ⁴⁷ who devour the houses of the widows, and under pretense pray long. These will receive a more severe judgment.
