⁴³ Woe to you, Pharisees! For you love the chief seat in the synagogues and the greetings in the marketplaces.

¹⁸ Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

⁶ And they love the first couch in the suppers, and the first seats in the synagogues, ⁷ and the greetings in the markets, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

³⁸ And He said to them in His teaching, Be careful of the scribes, those desiring to walk about in robes, and greetings in the markets, ³⁹ and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief couches in the dinners,

⁷ And He spoke a parable to those who had been invited, noting how they were choosing out the chief seats, saying to them, ⁸ When you are invited by anyone to wedding feasts, do not recline at the chief seat lest one more honorable than you be invited by him, ⁹ and coming, he who invited you will say to you, Give this one place. And then you begin with shame to take the last place. ¹⁰ But when you are invited, going in, recline at the last place, so that when he who has invited you may come, he may say to you, Friend, go up higher. Then glory will be to you before those reclining with you. ¹¹ For everyone exalting himself will be humbled, and the one humbling himself will be exalted.

⁴⁶ Beware of the scribes, those desiring to walk about in long robes, and liking greetings in the markets, and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief couches in the suppers,

¹⁰ in brotherly love to one another, loving fervently, having gone before one another in honor;

³ doing nothing according to party spirit or self-glory, but in humility, esteeming one another to surpass themselves;

² For if a gold-fingered man in splendid clothing comes into your synagogue, and a poor one in shabby clothing also comes in; ³ and you look on the one wearing the splendid clothing, and say to him, You sit here comfortably; and to the poor one you say, You stand there, or, Sit here under my footstool; ⁴ did you not also make a difference among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
