¹ And Job answered and said: ² I have heard many such things . You are all miserable comforters. ³ Is there an end to windy words? Or what provokes you that you answer? ⁴ I also could speak as you. If your soul were in the place of my soul, I could bind words against you and shake at you with my head. ⁵ I might make you strong with my mouth, and the moving of my lips could spare you. ⁶ If I speak, my pain is not held back; and though I forbear, what ease do I get? ⁷ But now He has made me weary. You have made all my company desolate. ⁸ And You have plucked me; for it is a witness, and my failure rises up against me; and it answers to my face. ⁹ His anger has torn, and hated me; He gnashes at me with His teeth; my enemy sharpens His eyes at me. ¹⁰ They have gaped at me with their mouth, and scornfully struck my cheek; they gather themselves together against me. ¹¹ God has delivered me to the perverse; and He has turned me over into the hands of the wicked. ¹² I was at ease, but He has shattered me; yea, He has also taken hold on my neck and broken me to bits; and He has set me up as a target for Him. ¹³ His archers surround me; He splits my inward parts and has no pity; He pours out my gall on the ground ¹⁴ He breaks me with break on top of break; He runs on me like a warrior. ¹⁵ I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and I have thrust my horn in the dust. ¹⁶ My face is reddened from weeping; and the shadow of death is on my eyelids, ¹⁷ though no violence is in my hand, and my prayer is pure. ¹⁸ O earth, do not cover my blood, and let not my cry have a place. ¹⁹ Even now, behold! My witness is in Heaven; and He who testifies of me is on high. ²⁰ My scorners are my friends; my eye pours out tears to God. ²¹ O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleads for his friend! ²² For years few in number will come; and I shall not return the way I shall go.

⁶ Are tasteless things eaten without salt? Or is there taste in the slime of an egg?

²⁵ Right words are powerful, but what does your arguing argue?

² Should not a flood of words be answered? And should a man of lips be justified? ³ Should your lies make men silent? And will you mock, and no one make you ashamed?

⁴ But you are imputers of lies; you are all worthless healers. ⁵ Oh that you would stop speaking entirely; and it would be your wisdom!

² Until when will you torment my soul and break me in pieces with words? ³ And this, ten times you have shamed me; you are not ashamed that you have wronged me.

² How have you helped the powerless, or saved the arm with no strength? ³ How have you advised the ones not wise or fully declared wise plans?

²⁶ For whom You have stricken, they have persecuted; and they gossip to the pain of those You pierced.

¹⁶ These, indeed, announce Christ out of party spirit, not sincerely, thinking to add affliction to my bonds.

¹⁹ So that, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.

²⁶ Do you intend to criticize words, and the speeches of one who is hopeless, that are as wind?

² Until when will you speak these things, since the words of your mouth are like a mighty wind?

² Should a wise man answer with windy knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

³ I have heard the instruction of my chastisement; and the spirit from my understanding makes me reply.

³ Also his wrath burned against his three friends, because they had not found any answer, yet they had condemned Job. ⁴ And Elihu had waited for Job with words, because they were older than he in days. ⁵ When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men, then his anger burned. ⁶ And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and you are very aged; so I held back and was afraid to make my knowledge known to you.

⁴⁶ And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor did anyone dare from that day to question Him any more.

¹¹ whose mouth you must stop, who overturn whole houses, teaching things which they ought not for the sake of ill gain.

⁸ in sound speech, not to be condemned; that he who is opposed may he ashamed, having nothing bad to say about you.

²¹ this is the word that Jehovah spoke concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and laughed you to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head behind you.

² Oh that my vexation were carefully weighed, and my ruin lifted in the balances together! ³ For now it would be heavier than the sand of the seas; on account of this my words have been rash. ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; their fury is drinking my spirit; the terrors of God are set against me. ⁵ Does the wild ass bray over tender grass? Or does the ox low over his fodder?

¹⁴ To the faint, mercy is due from his friend; for he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.

² Should not a flood of words be answered? And should a man of lips be justified?

¹⁶ even Job vainly opens his mouth; he multiplies words without knowledge.

⁷ All who see Me scornfully laugh at me; they open the lip; they shake the head, saying,

¹⁴ You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

²⁵ And I have become a reproach to them; they looked at me; they shook their heads.

¹⁹ In the abundance of words transgression does not cease, but one restraining his lips is prudent.

¹⁴ Yet the stupid one makes many words; a man knows not what they shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

¹⁶ to make their land a desolation, a hissing forever. Everyone who passes by will be amazed and will shake his head.

¹⁵ All who pass by clap their hands at you. They hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city which they called the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth?

¹⁵ This is the joyful city, dwelling confidently, who says in her heart, I am, and there is yet no other . How she has become a ruin, a restingplace for animals! Everyone who passes near her shall hiss; he shall shake his hand!

¹² Therefore, all things, whatever you desire that men should do to you, so also you should do to them; for this is the Law and the Prophets.

³⁹ But those passing by, blasphemed Him, shaking their heads, ⁴⁰ and saying, You destroying the Holy Place and building it in three days, if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.

¹⁵ Rejoice with rejoicing ones, and weep with weeping ones;

²⁶ And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it . If one member is glorified, all the members rejoice with it .

³ Behold, you have instructed many; and you have made weak hands strong. ⁴ Your words have upheld him who was falling, and you have made feeble knees strong.

²⁵ I chose out their way, and sat as chief; and I lived like a king among the troops; as the mourners, and he who comforts.

¹⁴ Hope in Jehovah; be strong and He will make strong your heart; yea, hope in Jehovah!

⁹ Ointment and perfume give joy to the heart, and one's friend is sweet from the counsel of the soul.

¹⁷ Iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens his friend's face.

³ Make the weak hands strong, and firm up the feeble knees. ⁴ Say to those of a hasty heart, Be strong! Do not fear! Behold, your God will come with vengeance; with the full dealing of God, He will come and save you.

¹ Brothers, if a man is taken in some fault, you, the spiritual ones, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness, considering yourself, that you not also be tempted.

¹ My soul loathes my life; I will leave my complaint on myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

My voice is to God, and I cry; my voice is to God, and He listened to me. ² In the day of my distress I sought the Lord; my hand was open in the night and did not grow numb; my soul refused to be comforted. ³ I remember God and am troubled; I meditate and my spirit faints. Selah. ⁴ You seized the watches of my eyes; I am troubled, and I cannot speak. ⁵ I thought upon the days of old, the years of bygone ages. ⁶ I will remember my song in the night; I will speak with my own heart, and my spirit carefully searches. ⁷ Will the lord cast off forever; and will He not add to be pleased any more? ⁸ Is His mercy gone forever? Has His word failed for all generations? ⁹ Has God forgotten to be gracious; has He in anger shut up His tender mercies? Selah.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and dying from childhood; I suffer Your terrors; I am distracted. ¹⁶ Your fierce wrath goes over me; Your terrors have cut me off. ¹⁷ They surrounded me like waters all the day long; they have come together around me. ¹⁸ You have taken lover and friend far from me, he who knows me, into darkness.

¹⁵ And the Sabeans fell on, and took them away. And they killed the young men with the edge of the sword; and I, I alone have escaped to tell you. ¹⁶ While this one was still speaking, this other also came and said, The fire of God has fallen from the heavens and has burned up the sheep and the young men. And it has destroyed them; and I, I alone have escaped to tell you. ¹⁷ While this one was still speaking, this other also came and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands and swooped down on the camels. And they have taken them away. And they have killed the young men with the edge of the sword; and I, I alone have escaped to tell you. ¹⁸ While this one was still speaking, this other came and said, Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the first-born, ¹⁹ And, behold! A great wind came from the wilderness and touched the four corners of the house. And it fell on the young men and they died; and I, I alone have escaped to tell you.

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from turmoil, and there the weary are at rest;

³ so I am caused to inherit months of vanity; and weary nights are appointed to me.

¹⁶ I despise them; I will not live always. Let me alone, for my days are vanity.

⁵ when the Almighty was yet with me and my children were around me; ⁶ when I washed my steps with curds, and the rock poured out rivers of oil for me; ⁷ when I went out to the gate by the city; when I prepared my seat in the street. ⁸ The young men saw me and hid themselves; the aged rose up, stood up; ⁹ the rulers held back with words, and they laid a hand on their mouth; ¹⁰ the leaders' voice was hidden; yea, their tongue clung to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ For the ear heard, and blessed me; and the eye saw, and witnessed for me. ¹² For I delivered the poor who cried for help and the orphan who had no helper to him. ¹³ The blessing of the perishing came on me; and I made the widow's heart to sing. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness and it clothed me; my judgment was like a robe and a diadem. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet for the lame. ¹⁶ I was father to the poor, and the cause which I did not know, I searched out. ¹⁷ I broke the fangs of the perverse, and cast the prey out of his teeth. ¹⁸ Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply days like the sand. ¹⁹ My root was open to the waters, and the dew lay all night on my branch. ²⁰ My glory was fresh with me, and my bow was renewed in my hand. ²¹ They listened to me and waited, and kept silence for my counsel. ²² After my words, they did not go on, and my speech dropped on them. ²³ And they waited for me like the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain. ²⁴ I laughed on those when they did not believe, and they did not make the light of my face to fall. ²⁵ I chose out their way, and sat as chief; and I lived like a king among the troops; as the mourners, and he who comforts.

⁶ I am weary in my groaning; I shall make by bed swim in all the night; I melt my couch with my tears. ⁷ My eye is dim because of grief; it wastes away because of all my vexers.

¹¹ My son, do not reject the chastening of Jehovah, and do not loathe His correction; ¹² for whom Jehovah loves He corrects, even as a father corrects the son with whom he is pleased.

⁴ The Lord Jehovah has given to Me the tongue of taught ones, to know to help the weary with a word. He arouses in the morning; He wakens the ear to Me, to hear as the learned.

¹³ And I also have made you sick, to strike you, making you desolate because of your sins.

²¹ I went out full, and Jehovah has brought me back empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since Jehovah has set His eye against me, and the Almighty has done evil to me?

¹⁷ You renew Your witnesses against me, and increase Your anger with me; changes and warfare are with me.

²⁰ My bone clings on my skin and on my flesh; and I have escaped by the skin of my teeth.

¹⁵ And He gave their request to them, but sent wasting into their soul.

²⁴ My knees stumble from fasting, and my flesh grows lean from fatness.

¹⁶ So the Lord, Jehovah of Hosts, shall send leanness among his fat ones. And under His glory He will kindle a burning like the burning of fire.

¹⁶ We have heard songs from the end of the earth, Honor to the Righteous. But I said, Leanness to me! Leanness to me! Woe to me! Traitors betray, even perfidy; traitors betray!

²⁷ that He might present it to Himself as the glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle, or any such things, but that it be holy and without blemish.

¹⁶ And if it rise, You would hunt me as a lion; and again You show Yourself wonderful in me. ¹⁷ You renew Your witnesses against me, and increase Your anger with me; changes and warfare are with me.

²⁴ Why do You hide Your face and count me for Your enemy?

²⁷ You also put my feet in the stocks, and watch all my paths; You set a limit on the soles of my feet.

⁴ One tearing himself in his anger, shall the earth be forsaken for your sake? Or shall the rock move from its place?

¹¹ And also His wrath glows against me, and to Himself He counts me as His foe.

¹⁶ with the ungodly, mockers for a cake, gnashing their teeth on me.

¹² The wicked plots against the righteous, and gnashes on him with his teeth;

²² Now think of this, you who forget God, lest I tear, and not any to deliver:

¹⁶ All your haters have opened their mouth against you; they hiss and gnash the teeth; they say, We have swallowed up. Surely this is the day for which we waited; we have found; we have seen.

¹⁰ He was a bear lying in wait for me, a lion in secret places.

¹⁴ For I am to Ephraim as the lion, and as the young lion to the house of Judah; I, even I, tear and go; I take away, and no one rescues.

¹ Come and let us return to Jehovah. For He has torn, and He will heal us. He has stricken, and He will bind us up.

⁸ Rejoice not against me, my enemy; for if I fall, I shall arise. For if sit in darkness, Jehovah is a light to me.

⁵⁴ And hearing these things, they were cut to their hearts and gnashed the teeth on him.

²⁴ And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Where did the Spirit of Jehovah pass over from me to speak with you?

²³ And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Which way did the Spirit of Jehovah cross from me to speak to you?

¹³ They opened their mouth on Me, like a lion ripping and roaring.

¹⁶ and You appoint Me to the dust of death; for dogs have encircled Me; band of spoilers have hemmed Me in, piercers of My hands and My feet. ¹⁷ I count all My bones; they look, they stare at Me.

¹⁵ But they rejoiced in my stumbling, and assembled; the defamers assembled themselves against me, and I knew not; they tore and were not silent,

²¹ And they open their mouth wide against me; they say, Aha! Aha! Our eyes have seen.

²¹ They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the blood of the innocent.

⁶ I gave My back to strikers, and My cheeks to pluckers; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.

³⁰ He gives his cheek to Him who strikes him; he is filled with reproach.

¹ Now gather yourself together, daughter of a troop; one sets a siege against us. They shall strike the Judge of Israel with a rod on the cheek.

⁶⁷ Then they spat in His face, and beat Him with the fist, and some slapped Him,

³⁵ And the people stood watching. And the rulers with them also scoffed, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if this one is the Christ, the elect of God. ³⁶ And coming near, the soldiers also mocked Him and were offering vinegar to Him,

²² But on His having said these things, one of the under-officers standing by gave Jesus a blow with the palm, saying, Do you answer the high priest this way?

²⁷ For truly both Herod and Pontius Pilate, with the nations and the peoples of Israel, were gathered together against Your holy child Jesus, whom You anointed,

² But Ananias the high priest ordered those standing by him to strike his mouth.

²⁰ For you endure if anyone enslaves you, if anyone devours, if anyone takes away from you, if anyone exalts self, if anyone beats you in the face.

¹⁸ And you have today shown that you have dealt well with me, in that Jehovah shut me up into your hand, and you did not kill me.

¹³ And a day came when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their brother's house, the first-born. ¹⁴ And a messenger came to Job and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses were feeding beside them.

⁷ And Satan went out from before the face of Jehovah. And he struck Job with bad burning ulcers from the sole of his foot to the top of his head.

¹⁴ Behold, he writhes with iniquity and he will conceive mischief: and he has fathered falsehood;

¹² Deliver me not into the soul of my enemies; for false witnesses have risen against me, and he that puffs out violence.

⁸ and have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy; You have set my feet in a broad place.

¹⁶ Therefore, then, he delivered Him up to them, that He might be crucified. And they took Jesus and led Him away.

³² For God shut up all in disobedience, that He may show mercy to all.

⁷ And by surpassing revelations, that I not be made haughty, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan, that he might buffet me, that I not be made haughty.

² And seven sons and three daughters were born to him. ³ And his possessions were seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household, so that this man was greater than all the sons of the east.

²⁶ I am not at ease, nor am I at rest; nor am I quiet; yet turmoil comes.

¹⁰ The lion roars; and the voice of the lion and the teeth of the young lions are broken;

¹² Am I a sea, or a sea-monster, that You set a watch over me?

²⁰ I have sinned; what do I do to You, O Watcher of man? Why have You set me as a target for You, so that I am a burden on myself?

¹⁷ He who breaks me with a tempest, and adds to my wounds without cause;

²⁶ He runs at him with a stiff neck, with the thick layers of his shields,

³ when His lamp shone on my head, when I walked through darkness by His light;

¹⁸ Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply days like the sand. ¹⁹ My root was open to the waters, and the dew lay all night on my branch.

¹⁹ though You have crushed us in the place of jackals and covered us over with the death-shade.

⁴ He has wasted my flesh and my skin. He has shattered my bones.

¹¹ He has deflected my ways and torn me to pieces; He made me desolate. ¹² He has trod His bow and set me up as a mark for the arrow.

⁷ When they seized you by your hand, you broke and tore off all their shoulder. And when they leaned on you, you shattered and made all their loins stand.

⁴⁴ And he who falls on this Stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.

⁴ who laid down their neck for my soul, to whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the nations.

²³ And the masters of arrows harass him, and shoot, and an archer lurks for him.

²⁰ Jehovah will not be willing to forgive him, for then Jehovah's anger and His zeal shall smoke, and His zeal shall be against that man, and all the curses written in this book shall lie upon him. And Jehovah shall blot out his name from under the heavens.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; their fury is drinking my spirit; the terrors of God are set against me.

¹⁰ And it is yet my comfort; and I would exult in pain not spared; for I have not hidden the words of the Holy One.

²⁷ whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and no stranger; though my reins be exhausted in my bosom.

²⁵ One draws it, and treads it from behind, even lightning from his gall; terror is upon him.

¹² If he will not turn, He will whet His sword; He has trod His bow, He made it ready; ¹³ yea, He has fitted for him instruments of death. He will make ready His arrows for pursuers.

¹¹ And my eyes are at an end with tears, my inward parts ferment; my liver is poured on the ground for the ruin of the daughter of my people; in the fainting of children and sucklings in the city's plazas.

¹³ He caused the sons of His quiver to enter into my inward parts.

¹¹ Therefore, as I live, says the Lord Jehovah, surely because you have defiled My sanctuary with all your idolatries and with all your abominations, so I also will withdraw. And My eye shall not spare, and I will not have pity.

³² Truly He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all, how will He not freely give us all things with Him?

⁵ and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah the eighth, a herald of righteousness, bringing a flood on a world of ungodly ones;

⁸ And he struck them hip on thigh, a great slaughter, and went down and lived in the cleft of the rock Etam.

⁷ Deep calls to deep through the voice of Your waterfalls; all Your waves and Your billows have passed over me.

³ Surely He turned against me; He turns His hand all the day. ⁴ He has wasted my flesh and my skin. He has shattered my bones. ⁵ He built against me and has put around me bitterness and hardship.

⁷ They shall run as mighty ones; they shall go up the wall as men of war. And they each go on his way, and they do not change their paths.

³⁴ And Jacob tore his clothing and put sackcloth on his loins. And he mourned many days for his son.

¹⁰ They who strive with Jehovah will be smashed; He thunders in the heavens against him; Jehovah judges the ends of the earth, and gives strength to His king, and exalts the horn of His anointed.

²⁷ And it happened, when Ahab heard these words, he tore his garments, and put sackcloth on his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.

¹⁹ He has cast me into the mire; and I have become like dust and ashes.

⁵ let the enemy pursue and overtake my soul; yea, trample down my life to earth, and lay my honor in the dust. Selah.

⁵ Do not lift up your horn on high; do not speak with a stiff neck.

¹⁰ And I will cut off all the horns of the wicked; but the horns of the righteous shall be lifted up.

¹² And in that day the Lord Jehovah of Hosts called to weeping and mourning; and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth.

⁷ And my eye is dim from grief; and all my members are like a shadow.

⁹ Be gracious to me, O Jehovah, for I am in trouble; my eye has wasted away with grief, my soul and my belly.

³ When I kept silence, then my bones became old, through my howling all day.

³ I am weary from my crying, my throat is scorched; my eyes fail while I wait for my God.

³ For my days are finished in smoke, and my bones glow like a firebrand. ⁴ My heart is stricken and dried like grass, so that I forget to eat my bread. ⁵ Because of the voice of my sighing, my bones cleave to my flesh.

⁹ For I have eaten ashes like bread, and have mixed my drink with weeping;

³ The cords of death hemmed me in; and the pains of Sheol found me; I find distress and sorrow;

¹⁴ Just as many were astonished over You, so much was the disfigurement from man, His appearance and His form from sons of mankind.

¹⁶ I weep for these; my eye, my eye runs down with water, because far from me is a comforter reviving my soul. My sons are desolated because the enemy prevails.

¹ And Jonah prayed to Jehovah his God out of the belly of the fish. ² And he said, I cried out to Jehovah from my distress. And He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried for help, and You heard my voice. ³ For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current surrounded me; all Your breakers and Your waves passed over me. ⁴ And I said, I am cast off from Your eyes; yet I will again look to Your holy temple. ⁵ Waters encompassed me, even to my soul; the depth closed around me; seaweed was clinging to my head. ⁶ I went down to the bases of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me forever. But You brought up my life from the pit, O Jehovah my God. ⁷ When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Jehovah; and my prayer came to You, to Your holy temple. ⁸ Those who observe vanities of idolatry forsake their faithfulness; ⁹ but I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving; I will fulfill that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to Jehovah! ¹⁰ And Jehovah spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out onto the dry land.

³⁴ And He said to them, My soul is deeply grieved, unto death. Remain here and watch.

⁵ if you would seek earnestly to God, and make your prayer to the Almighty, ⁶ if you were pure and upright, surely now He would rise for you, and make whole the abode of your righteousness.

¹⁴ if iniquity is in your hand, put it far away and do not let wickedness dwell in your tents;

²⁰ All the days of the wicked he is laboring in pain; a number of years are stored up for the ruthless.

³⁴ For the company of the ungodly shall be bleak; and fire shall devour the tents of bribery;

²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts, and the plots you would wrongfully do against me; ²⁸ for you say, Where is the house of the noble, and where the tent, the dwellings of the wicked?

⁵ Is not your wickedness great, and is there no end to your iniquities? ⁶ For you have taken a pledge from your brother for nothing, and you have stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ You have not given water to the faint to drink, and you withheld food from the hungry. ⁸ And the earth is to him, to the armed man; and the honored one lives in it. ⁹ You have sent widows away empty, and have crushed the arms of orphans.

⁶ I hold fast by my righteousness, and I will not abandon it; my heart shall not shame me any of my days. ⁷ Let my enemy be like the wicked and he who rises against me as the perverse.

¹ I made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I look intently on a virgin? ² For what is the portion from God above? And what is the legacy from the Almighty on high? ³ Is it not disaster to the perverse, and calamity to the workers of iniquity? ⁴ Does He not see my ways and count all my steps? ⁵ If I have walked with vanity, or my foot has hurried to deceit, ⁶ let me be weighed in a just balance so that God may know my integrity. ⁷ If my step has turned aside out of the way, or my heart has walked after my eyes, and if any blot has held fast to my hands, ⁸ let me sow, and let another eat; and let my harvests be rooted out. ⁹ If my heart has been enticed by a woman; or I have laid wait at my neighbor's door, ¹⁰ let my wife grind to another, and let others crouch over her. ¹¹ For that would be an evil scheme, and is iniquity for judges. ¹² For it is a fire that devours to the Place of Ruin, and it would root up all my gain. ¹³ If I despised the cause of my male slave or my slave-girl when they contended with me, ¹⁴ what then shall I do when God rises up? And when He calls me to account, what shall I answer Him? ¹⁵ Did not He who made me in the belly make him? And did not One shape us in the womb? ¹⁶ If I have withheld from the desire of the poor, or I have caused the widow's eyes to fail, ¹⁷ or have eaten my bit alone, and the orphan has not eaten it, ¹⁸ for from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and from my mother's womb I guided her. ¹⁹ If I have seen any perish for lack of clothing, or there was no covering for the needy; ²⁰ if his loins have not blessed me, and he warmed himself with the fleece of my flock; ²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the orphan, when I watched over my help in the gate; ²² let my shoulder fall from the back, and let my arm be broken from the elbow. ²³ for trouble from God is a terror to me, and I could not do the thing because of His majesty. ²⁴ If I have made gold my hope or have called fine gold my trust; ²⁵ if I rejoiced because my wealth was great; or because my hand had gotten much; ²⁶ if I looked to the light when it shone, or the moon marching in splendor, ²⁷ and my heart was secretly enticed. or my mouth has kissed my hand; ²⁸ this also would be an iniquity for the judges; for I would have denied God above. ²⁹ If I rejoiced at the ruin of my enemy, and I was excited when evil found him; ³⁰ also I have not allowed my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse; ³¹ if the men of my tent did not say, Who can find one not being satisfied from his meat, ³² the stranger did not sleep in the street, for I opened my doors to the traveler; ³³ if I covered my transgressions like Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom, ³⁴ then let me fear before a great multitude, and let the scorn of families frighten me and I will be silent, and not go out the door. ³⁵ Oh that I had one to hear me! See, my mark! Let the Almighty answer me, and let my Accuser write an indictment. ³⁶ Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, and bind it like crowns to me. ³⁷ I would tell Him the number of my steps. Like a prince I would go near Him. ³⁸ If my land cries out against me, or its furrows weep together; ³⁹ if I have eaten its strength without silver, or have caused its owner to expire; ⁴⁰ let thorns come forth instead of wheat, and a weed instead of barley. The words of Job are finished.

³ O Jehovah, my God, if I have done this, if there is iniquity in my hands: ⁴ if I have repaid evil to my friend or I have plundered my vexer without cause, ⁵ let the enemy pursue and overtake my soul; yea, trample down my life to earth, and lay my honor in the dust. Selah.

¹⁷ All this has come upon us, and we have not forgotten You nor dealt falsely with Your covenant. ¹⁸ Our heart has not turned back, and our steps have not swerved from Your way, ¹⁹ though You have crushed us in the place of jackals and covered us over with the death-shade. ²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God, and have spread our hands to an alien god, ²¹ shall not God search out this? For He knows the secrets of the heart.

¹⁸ If I had regarded iniquity in my heart, Jehovah would not have heard. ¹⁹ Surely, God has heard; He has attended to the voice of my prayer.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is a hateful thing to Jehovah, but the prayer of the upright is His delight.

⁶ Their webs shall not become clothing, nor shall they cover themselves with their works. Their works are works of evil, and the act of violence is in their hands.

⁸ But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth. And let them call with strength to God. And let them each one turn from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their palms.

⁸ Therefore, I desire the men to pray in every place, lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting.

¹¹ And now you are cursed more than the ground which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.

⁵ And do not cover their iniquity, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before You. For they have provoked You to anger before the builders.

⁹ Will God hear his cry when distress comes upon him?

¹⁵ And when you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you. Yea, when you multiply prayer, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.

²¹ For, behold, Jehovah comes out of His place to visit his iniquity on the dweller of the earth. The earth shall also reveal her blood, and shall no more cover over her slain ones.

⁹ Then you shall call, and Jehovah will answer; you shall cry, and He shall say, Here I am . If you put the yoke away from among you, the sending out of the finger, and the speaking of vanity; ¹⁰ and if you let out your soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then your light shall rise in the darkness, and your gloom shall be as the noonday.

²⁹ O earth, earth, earth! Hear the word of Jehovah!

⁷ For her blood is in her midst, she set it on a shining rock. She did not pour it on the ground, to cover it with dust.

³ You ask, and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order that you may spend on your lusts. ⁴ Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whoever, then, purposes to be a friend of the world is shown to be an enemy of God.

⁵⁰ If you will not afflict my daughters, and if you will take wives above my daughters, no man is with us. Behold! God is a witness between you and me.

⁵ And he said to them, Jehovah is witness against you, and His anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand. And they said, He is witness.

² Rule and fear are with Him. He makes peace in His high places.

⁵ Who is like Jehovah our God, who sits on high to dwell;

⁹ For God is my witness, whom I serve in my spirit in the gospel of His Son, how without ceasing I make mention of you

¹ I tell the truth in Christ, I do not lie, my conscience bearing witness with me in the Holy Spirit,

²³ And I call God as witness to my soul that to spare you I came no more to Corinth.

³¹ The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ knows, He who is blessed forever, that I am not lying.

⁵ For neither were we then found with words of flattery, even as you know, nor with pretense of covetousness (God is witness),

¹⁰ You and God are witnesses how holily and righteously and blamelessly we were to you, those believing;

⁴ I am a laughingstock to his friends; calling on God, and He answers him; the just, the upright one is a mockery; ⁵ a flame is despised in the thoughts of him who feels secure; it is ready for those with slipping feet.

⁴ I also could speak as you. If your soul were in the place of my soul, I could bind words against you and shake at you with my head.

² Are not mockeries with me? And my eye rests on their insults.

⁴ In return for my love, they are my enemies; but I am in prayer.

² I pour out my musing before Him; I declare my distress before Him.

⁴ Yes, he wept and pleaded to Him, and he contended with the Angel and overcame. He found us at Bethel, and He spoke with us there, ⁵ even Jehovah, the God of hosts. Jehovah is his memorial.

¹¹ But they were filled with madness and talked to one another as to what they might do to Jesus. ¹² And it happened in these days, He went out into the mountain to pray. And He was spending the night in prayer to God.

⁷ who in the days of His flesh was offering both petitions and entreaties to Him being able to save Him from death, with strong crying and tears, and being heard from His godly fear;

³⁴ Let Him take His rod away from me, and let not His dread make me afraid; ³⁵ then I would speak, and not fear Him; for I am not so in myself.

³ Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to argue with God.

²² Then call, and I will answer; or let me speak, and reply to me.

³ Oh that I knew where I might find Him, I would come into His seat; ⁴ I would order my cause before Him, and I would fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words He would answer me, and understand what He would say to me. ⁶ Would He plead against me with greatness of strength? No, surely He would put it in me. ⁷ There the righteous might reason with Him; and I would be forever delivered from my Judge.

³⁵ Oh that I had one to hear me! See, my mark! Let the Almighty answer me, and let my Accuser write an indictment.

¹ And Jehovah answered Job and said: ² Shall a reprover contend with the Almighty? He who reproves God, let him answer it. ³ Then Job answered Jehovah and said: ⁴ Behold, I am vile! What shall I answer You? I will put my hand to my mouth. ⁵ Once I have spoken, but I will not answer; yea, twice, but I will go no further.

¹⁰ That which has been is named already, and it is known that he is man; and he is not able to contend with Him who is stronger than he.

⁹ Woe to him who fights with the One who formed him! A potsherd among the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to its former, What are you making? Or does your work say, He has no hands?

²⁰ Yes, rather, O man, who are you answering against God? Shall the thing formed say to the One forming it, Why did You make me like this? Isa. 29:16

⁹ As the clouds fade and vanish, so he who goes down to Sheol shall not come up. ¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house; nor shall his place know him any more.

⁵ Since his days are fixed, the number of his months is with You, and You have appointed his hounds, and he cannot pass over;

¹⁰ But man dies and is cut off, and man expires; and where is he?

¹⁴ If a man dies, will he revive? All the days of my warfare I will wait, until my change comes.

⁵ also they shall be afraid of a high place, and terrors in the way; and the almond tree shall blossom, and the locust makes himself a burden; and desire breaks, because man goes to his eternal home, and the mourners go about in the street;
