Consider its ways and be wise. ⁷ It has no chief, officer, or ruler. ⁸ In the summer, it prepares its food; in the harvest, it gathers its sustenance. ⁹ How long will you lie down, lazy? When will you rise up from your sleep? ¹⁰ A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands for rest— ¹¹ like a _⌊robber_⌋* shall your poverty come, and what you lack like an armed man. ¹² A worthless man, an evil man, goes around with _⌊deceitful speech_⌋.* ¹³ Winking in his eye, shuffling in his foot, pointing in his fingers, ¹⁴ perversion in his heart, he devises evil; at all times he will send out discord.* ¹⁵ Upon _⌊such a man_⌋,* suddenly shall his calamity come; in a moment he will be damaged and there is no healing.* ¹⁶ There are six things Yahweh hates, and seven things are abominations of his soul:* ¹⁷ haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, ¹⁸ a devising heart, plans of deception, feet that hurry to run to evil,* ¹⁹ a false witness who breathes lies and sends out discord* between brothers. ²⁰ My child, keep the commandment of your father, and do not disregard the instruction of your mother. ²¹ Bind them on your heart continually; tie them upon your neck. ²² _⌊When you walk_⌋,* she* will lead you, _⌊When you lie down_⌋,* she will watch over you, and when you awake, she will converse with you. ²³ For like a lamp is a commandment, and instruction is light, and the way of life* is the reproof of discipline, ²⁴ in order to preserve you from an evil woman,* from the smoothness of the tongue of _⌊an adulteress_⌋.* ²⁵ Do not desire her beauty in your heart; may she not capture you with her eyelashes. ²⁶ For the price of a woman, a prostitute,* is the price of a loaf of bread, but the _⌊woman belonging to a man_⌋* hunts precious life. ²⁷ Can a man carry fire in his lap, and his clothes not burn? ²⁸ If a man walks upon the hot coals, will his feet not be burned? ²⁹ Thus, he who goes to the wife of his neighbor, any who touches her shall not go unpunished. ³⁰ People do not despise a thief when he steals to fill himself* when he is hungry. ³¹ But if he is found, he will pay sevenfold, every possession of his house he shall give. ³² He who commits adultery with a woman lacks _⌊sense_⌋,* he destroys himself* who does it. ³³ A wound and dishonor he will find, and his disgrace will not be wiped out. ³⁴ For jealousy is the fury of a husband, and he will not show restraint on the day of revenge. ³⁵ He will not accept _⌊any compensation_⌋,* and he will not be willing, though the bribe is large.

⁹ I myself will be surety for him. You may seek him from my hand. If I do not bring him back to you and present him before you, then I will stand guilty before you forever.

³² For your servant is pledged as surety for the boy by my father, saying, If I do not bring him to you, then I shall be culpable to my father forever. ³³ So then, please let your servant remain in place of the boy as a slave to my lord, and let the boy go up with his brothers.

³ Please lay down a pledge for me with yourself; who is he who will give security for my hand?*

¹⁵ He will suffer trouble when he loans to a stranger, but he who refuses a pledge is safe.

¹⁸ A person who lacks _⌊sense_⌋* _⌊pledges_⌋;* he becomes security before his neighbor.

¹⁶ Take his garment, for he has given security to a stranger, and on behalf of a foreigner—take it as pledge.

²⁶ Do not be with those who _⌊give a pledge_⌋* _⌊by becoming_⌋* surety.

¹³ Take his garment, for he gives surety to a stranger, and to _⌊an adulteress_⌋*—so take his pledge.

¹⁸ But if in anything he has caused you loss or owes you anything, _⌊charge this to my account_⌋*. ¹⁹ I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will pay it back, lest I mention to you that _⌊you owe me even your very self besides_⌋*.

³ And Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, and they said to him, "Thus says Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, 'Until when will you refuse to submit before me? Release my people so that they may serve me.

¹⁴ Then David said to Gad, "I am greatly distressed. Please let us fall into the hand of Yahweh, because he is great in his compassion; but into the hand of man don't let me fall."

⁵ Then Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the princes of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem from before Shishak. And he said to them, "Thus says Yahweh: 'You yourselves have abandoned me, and I myself have surely abandoned you into the hand of Shishak.'"

¹² And he did evil in the eyes of Yahweh his God. He did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet _⌊who spoke for_⌋* Yahweh.

⁸ And you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy. You have set my feet in a broad place.

¹⁰ Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

⁴ I will give no sleep to my eyes, no slumber to my eyelids,

¹⁰ A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands for rest— ¹¹ like a _⌊robber_⌋* shall your poverty come, and what you lack like an armed man.

¹⁰ Whatever your hand finds to do—do it with all your might; for in Sheol—where you are going—no one works, plans, knows, or thinks about anything.

¹⁷ The one who is on his* housetop must not come down to take things out of his house, ¹⁸ and the one who is in the field must not turn back to pick up his cloak.

³⁵ Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know when the master of the house is coming—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or early in the morning— ³⁶ lest he arrive suddenly and* find you sleeping.

In Yahweh I have taken refuge; how can you say to my soul, "Flee to your mountain like a bird"?

³ For he will deliver* you from the snare of the fowler, from the plague of destruction.

⁷ Our soul has escaped like a bird from the snare of fowlers. The snare is broken, and we have escaped.

¹⁷ for "in vain* is the net scattered, in the sight of any _⌊winged bird_⌋."*

⁷ "But* ask* the animals, and they will teach you, and the birds of the heaven, and they will tell you; ⁸ or ask the earth, and it will teach you, and the fishes of the sea will declare to you.

⁹ How long will you lie down, lazy? When will you rise up from your sleep?

²⁶ Like vinegar to the tooth and like smoke to the eyes, thus is the lazy to one who employs* him.

⁴ The soul* of the lazy craves, but there is nothing, but the person of diligence is richly supplied.

¹⁹ The way of the lazy is like a hedge of thorns,* but the path of the upright is a highway.

⁹ Even he who is slack in his work, he is brother to a master* of destruction.

¹⁵ Laziness will bring on a deep sleep, and a person* of idleness will suffer hunger.

²⁴ A lazy person buries his hand in the dish, and even to his mouth he will not bring it back.

⁴ The lazy person will not plow in season; he will expect at the harvest, but there will be nothing.

²⁵ The craving of a lazy person will kill him, for his hands refuse to work.*

¹³ A lazy person says "A lion in the street! In the middle of the highway, I shall be killed!"

³⁰ I passed by the field of a lazy person, and over the vineyard of a person lacking _⌊sense_⌋;* ³¹ and behold, it was overgrown—all of it was covered with thorns, its surface with nettles, and _⌊its stone wall_⌋* was broken down. ³² Then I myself saw and my heart* considered; I looked, and I took hold of instruction: ³³ A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands for rest, ³⁴ and your poverty will come running, and your lack like an armed warrior.

¹³ A lazy person says "A lion is in the road! A lion among the streets!" ¹⁴ The door turns on its hinge, and a lazy person on his bed. ¹⁵ A lazy person buries his hands in the dish; he is too tired to return it to his mouth. ¹⁶ A lazy person is wiser in his eyes than seven who answer discreetly.

²⁵ The ants are a people who are not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer;

³ An ox knows its owner and a donkey the manger of its master. Israel does not know; my people do not understand.

²⁶ Consider the birds of the sky, that they do not sow or reap or gather produce into barns, and your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth more than they are?

²⁶ But his master answered and* said to him, 'Evil and lazy slave! You knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather from where I did not scatter seed.*

¹¹ not lagging in diligence, being enthusiastic in spirit, serving the Lord,

¹² in order that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who inherit the promises through faith and patience.

³⁹ "Can you hunt prey for the lion? And can you satisfy the hunger of strong lions

²⁶ "Does the hawk soar by your wisdom? Does it spread its wings to the south? ²⁷ Or does the eagle fly high at your command and construct its nest high? ²⁸ It lives on the rock and spends the night _⌊on the rock point and the mountain stronghold_⌋.* ²⁹ From there it spies out the prey; its eyes look from far away. ³⁰ And its young ones lick blood greedily, and where the dead carcasses are, there they are."

⁴ Will it make a covenant with you? Will you take it as a slave forever? ⁵ Will you play with it as with birds and put it on a leash for your girls? ⁶ Will guildsmen bargain over it? Will they divide it between tradesmen? ⁷ Can you fill its kin with harpoons or* its head with fish spears? ⁸ Lay your hands on it; think about the battle—you will not do it again! ⁹ "Look, _⌊the hope of capturing it_⌋* is false. Will one be hurled down even at its sight? ¹⁰ Is it not fierce when somebody stirs it? Who then is he who would stand _⌊before it_⌋?* ¹¹ Who has come to confront me, that* I should repay him? Under all the heavens, _⌊it belongs to me_⌋.* ¹² "I will not keep quiet concerning its limbs or* concerning the extent of its might and the gracefulness of its frame. ¹³ Who can strip off _⌊its outer covering_⌋?* Who can penetrate its double harness? ¹⁴ Who can open the doors of its face? Its teeth all around are fearsome. ¹⁵ Its back* has scales of shields; it is shut up closely as with a seal. ¹⁶ They are close _⌊to one another_⌋—* even* the air cannot come between them. ¹⁷ They are joined _⌊one to another_⌋;* they cling together and cannot be separated. ¹⁸ "Its snorting flashes forth light, and its eyes are _⌊red like dawn_⌋.* ¹⁹ Torches go from its mouth; sparks of fire shoot out. ²⁰ Smoke comes from its nostrils as from a kettle boiling and burning bulrushes. ²¹ Its breath kindles charcoal, and a flame comes from its mouth. ²² "Strength abides in its neck, and dismay* dances _⌊before it_⌋.* ²³ Its flesh's folds of skin cling together; it is cast on it—it will not be moved. ²⁴ Its heart is cast as stone; yes,* it is cast as the lower millstone. ²⁵ _⌊When it raises itself_⌋,* the mighty ones are terrified; they retreat because of its thrashing. ²⁶ Reaching it with the sword does not avail, nor with the spear, the dart, or* the javelin. ²⁷ It regards iron as straw, bronze as rotten wood. ²⁸ _⌊An arrow_⌋* will not make it flee; sling stones are turned to stubble for it. ²⁹ Clubs are regarded as stubble, and it laughs at the short sword's rattle. ³⁰ "Its underparts are shards of a potsherd; it moves over mud like a threshing sledge. ³¹ It makes the deep boil like a cooking pot; it makes the sea like a pot of ointment. ³² Behind it, _⌊it leaves a glistening wake_⌋;* one would think that the deep has gray hair. ³³ "_⌊On the ground it has no equal_⌋*— a* creature without fear. ³⁴ It observes all the lofty; it is king _⌊over all that are proud_⌋."*

²⁷ there is no king for the locust, yet it marches in rank;

⁵ He who gathers in the summer is a child who is prudent; he who sleeps at the harvest is a child who brings shame.

¹⁹ storing up for themselves a good foundation for the future, in order that they may take hold of what is truly life.

⁸ You pay attention, O brutes among the people. And you fools, when you will show insight?

²² "_⌊How long_⌋,* O simple ones, will you love simplicity? And how long will scoffers delight in their scoffing, and fools hate knowledge?

¹⁴ Cleanse your heart from wickedness, O Jerusalem, so that you may be saved. _⌊How long_⌋* will your thoughts of mischief dwell in your inner part?

⁶ A man came, sent from God, _⌊whose name was_⌋* John.

¹¹ And do this because you* know the time, that it is already the hour for you to wake up from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we believed.

¹⁴ for everything made visible is light. Therefore it says,
Wake up, sleeper, and rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.*

² for you yourselves well know that the day of the Lord is coming in the same way as a thief in the night. ³ Whenever they say "Peace and security," then sudden destruction will overtake them like the birth pains of _⌊a pregnant woman_⌋*, and they will not possibly escape. ⁴ But you, brothers, are not in the darkness, so that the day should catch you like a thief, ⁵ for you are all sons of light and sons of day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. ⁶ So then, we must not sleep like the rest, but must be on the alert and be self-controlled. ⁷ For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night.

⁶ Go to the ant, lazy! Consider its ways and be wise.

³³ Your eyes will see strange things, and your heart* will speak perverse things. ³⁴ And you will be like him who lies down in the heart of the sea, and like him who lies down on top of a mast.

⁴ A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent enriches.

³⁴ and your poverty will come running, and your lack like an armed warrior.

²⁸ His oldest brother Eliab heard while he was speaking to the men, _⌊and Eliab became very angry against David_⌋* and said, "Why have you come down today, and with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumptuousness and the evil of your heart! For you have come down in order to see the battle!"

³ for the wicked boasts about the desire of his _⌊heart_⌋,* and the one greedy for gain curses and treats Yahweh with contempt.

⁷ His mouth is filled with cursing, with deceits and oppression; under his tongue are trouble and evil.

³ The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit. He has ceased to have insight and to do good.

² Your tongue plans destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceit. ³ You love evil more than good, a lie more than speaking _⌊what is right_⌋.* Selah ⁴ You love all devouring words, O deceitful tongue,

⁷ Look, they pour out talk with their mouth. Swords are on their lips, for they say, "Who hears?"

⁸ They mock and speak maliciously of oppression; they speak as though from on high. ⁹ They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue roams the earth.

¹² in order to deliver you from the way of evil,* from a man who speaks devious things—

²⁴ Remove from yourself _⌊deceitful speech_⌋,* and abolish _⌊devious talk_⌋* from yourself.

¹⁴ perversion in his heart, he devises evil; at all times he will send out discord.*

¹³ The fear of Yahweh is hatred of evil, pride, and arrogance and an evil way. And I hate a mouth of perversity.

⁶ The righteousness of the upright will save them, but by a scheme the treacherous will be taken captive.

²⁷ A man of wickedness concocts evil, and his lips are like a scorching fire.

⁴ He who does evil listens to lips of wickedness, and the liar gives heed to the tongue of mischief.

² The one basket had very good figs, like _⌊early figs_⌋,* and the other basket had very bad figs that could not be eaten because of their bad quality.

⁸ But like the bad figs that cannot be eaten because of their bad quality—for thus says Yahweh—so I will treat Zedekiah the king of Judah, and his officials, and the remnant of Jerusalem who remain in this land, and those who live in the land of Egypt. ⁹ And I will make them as a terror, an evil to all the kingdoms of the earth, as a disgrace and a proverb, as a taunt and a curse, in all the places where I will drive them. ¹⁰ And I will send among them the sword, the famine, and the plague, until they perish from the land that I gave to them and their ancestors.'"*

³⁴ Offspring of vipers! How are you able to say good things when you* are evil? For from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

³⁰ And from among you yourselves men will arise, speaking _⌊perversions of the truth_⌋* in order to draw away the disciples after them.

¹³ And at the same time also, going around from house to house, they learn to be idle, and not only idle, but also gossipy and busybodies, saying the things that are not necessary.

¹⁰ For there are many rebellious people, idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, ¹¹ whom it is necessary to silence, whoever are ruining whole families by* teaching things which must not be taught for the sake of dishonest gain.

²¹ Therefore, putting aside all moral uncleanness and wicked excess, welcome* with humility the implanted message which is able to save your souls.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire! The world of unrighteousness,* the tongue, is set among our members, defiling the whole body and setting on fire _⌊the course of human existence_⌋*, being set on fire by hell.

¹² Why does your heart carry you away? And why do your eyes flash,

¹⁹ Let not those who are wrongfully my enemies* rejoice over me. Nor let those who hate me without cause wink the eye.

⁶ She does not observe* the path of life; her ways wander, and she does not know it.

¹⁰ The winking of an eye causes* trouble, and the foolishness of lips comes to ruin.

⁴ He plans sin on his bed. He puts himself on a way that is not good. He does not reject evil.

¹⁴ those who are happy to do evil, for they delight in the deviousness of evil,

²⁹ Do not plot harm against your neighbor who dwells in confidence beside you.

¹⁸ a devising heart, plans of deception, feet that hurry to run to evil,* ¹⁹ a false witness who breathes lies and sends out discord* between brothers.

²⁸ A person of perversity will spread dissent, and he who whispers separates a close friend. ²⁹ A person of violence will entice his neighbor and cause him to walk on a way that is not good. ³⁰ He who winks his eyes does so in order to plan perverse things; he who purses his lips will bring evil to pass.

⁸ Crooked is the way of a man and a foreigner, but the pure is upright in his conduct.

⁸ He who sows injustice will reap calamity, and the rod of his anger will fail.

¹⁷ Grabbing onto the ears of a dog passing by is one who meddles in a quarrel that is not his own. ¹⁸ Like a maniac who shoots firebrands, arrows, and death, ¹⁹ so is a man who deceives his neighbor, but says "Am I not joking?" ²⁰ For lack of wood, a fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling will cease. ²¹ As charcoal is to hot embers and wood is to fire, so a man of quarrels is to kindling strife. ²² The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels, and they go down to the inner parts of the body.

⁷ And a scoundrel, his weapons are evil; he plans evil devices to ruin the poor with words of deception even* when the speech of the needy is right.

²⁰ But* the wicked are like the churning sea, that is not able to keep quiet, and its waters toss up mire and mud.

² And he said to me, "Son of man,* these are the men _⌊who devise mischief_⌋,* and who are offering bad counsel in this city,

⁷ Because they sow the wind, they will reap the whirlwind. The standing grain does not have heads;* it will not yield flour. And if it would yield, strangers would devour it.

¹ Woe to those who plan wickedness and evil deeds upon their beds! In the light of the morning they did it, because they have power in their hands.

¹⁷ Now I exhort you, brothers, to look out for those who cause dissensions and temptations contrary to the teaching which you learned, and stay away from them.

⁷ Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked, for whatever a person sows, this he will also reap, ⁸ because the one who sows to his own flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.

¹⁶ But they were mocking the messengers of God and despising his words and scoffing at his prophets until the wrath of Yahweh rose against his people until there was no remedy.

²² Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you apart, and there will be none to deliver.

¹⁸ Surely you set them on slippery places. You cause them to fall onto ruin.* ¹⁹ How they become a desolation in a moment! They come to a complete end by terrors. ²⁰ Like a dream upon awakening, when you wake up, O Lord, you will despise their fleeting form.*

²⁷ When your panic comes like a storm, and your calamity arrives like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you,

¹ A man who is reproved, being stubborn of neck— suddenly he will be broken, and there will not be healing.

¹³ therefore this iniquity shall come for you like a breach about to fall, bulging out on a high wall _⌊that breaks_⌋* suddenly, in an instant. ¹⁴ And he breaks it like a vessel of _⌊a potter_⌋* breaks, that is crushed; he has no compassion, and no potsherd is found among its fragments* _⌊to take fire_⌋* from the hearth, or _⌊to skim_⌋* water from the cistern."

¹¹ And you shall say to them, 'Thus says Yahweh of hosts: "So I will break this people and this city as one breaks the vessel of the potter, so that it is not able to be repaired again. And in Topheth they will bury _⌊until there is no room to bury_⌋.*

³ Whenever they say "Peace and security," then sudden destruction will overtake them like the birth pains of _⌊a pregnant woman_⌋*, and they will not possibly escape.

¹⁰ There shall not be found among you one who makes his son or his daughter go through the fire, or _⌊one who practices divination_⌋,* or an interpreter of signs,* or an augur,* or sorcerer, ¹¹ or one who casts magic spells, or one who consults a spirit of the dead,* or spiritist, or one who inquires of the dead.* ¹² For everyone doing these things is detestable to Yahweh, and because of these detestable things Yahweh your God is driving them out from _⌊before you_⌋.*

¹⁸ You may not bring the _⌊hire_⌋* of a prostitute or _⌊the earnings of a male prostitute_⌋* into the house of Yahweh your God, for any vow offerings, because _⌊both_⌋* are a detestable thing to Yahweh your God.

⁴ her first husband who sent her away is not allowed _⌊to take her again_⌋* to become a wife to him after she has _⌊been defiled_⌋,* for that is a detestable thing _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, and so you shall not mislead into sin the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance.

¹⁶ For detestable to* Yahweh your God is everyone who is doing such things,* everyone who is acting* dishonestly.

⁵ Yahweh tests the righteous, but the wicked and the lover of violence his soul hates.

³² for he who is perverse is an abomination of Yahweh, but those who are upright are his confidence.

¹ Balances of deceit are an abomination of Yahweh, but _⌊an accurate weight_⌋* delights him.

²⁰ An abomination of Yahweh are the _⌊crooked of heart_⌋,* but his delight are _⌊those with blameless ways_⌋.*

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination of Yahweh, but the prayer of the upright is his delight. ⁹ An abomination of Yahweh is the way of the wicked, but he who pursues righteousness he will love.

¹⁵ He who justifies the wicked and he who condemns the righteous, the two of them are both abominations of Yahweh.

¹⁰ Stone and stone, measure and measure, _⌊both of them_⌋* are an abomination of Yahweh.

²³ An abomination of Yahweh is _⌊a stone and a weight_⌋,* and scales of falsehood are not good.

¹⁸ Three of these are too wonderful for me, and four, I do not understand them:

²¹ Under three things the earth* trembles, and under four, it is not able to bear up:

²⁴ There are four small things on the earth, and they are _⌊exceedingly wise_⌋:*

²⁹ There are three things that are magnificent of stride, and four that are magnificent when moving:

³ Thus says Yahweh, "For three transgressions of Damascus and for four I will not revoke the punishment,* because they threshed Gilead with threshing sledges of iron!

⁶ Thus says Yahweh: "For three transgressions of Gaza and for four I will not revoke the punishment,* because they exiled a whole community, handing them over to Edom!

⁹ Thus says Yahweh: "For three transgressions of Tyre and for four I will not revoke the punishment,* because they delivered up a whole community to Edom and they did not remember the covenant of brotherhood!

¹¹ Thus says Yahweh: "For three transgressions of Edom and for four I will not revoke the punishment,* because he pursued his brother with the sword! He stifled his compassion and his anger tore them apart _⌊continually_⌋,* and he kept his rage forever.

¹ Thus says Yahweh: "For three transgressions of Moab and for four I will not revoke the punishment,* because he burned to lime the bones of the king of Edom.

⁴ Thus says Yahweh: "For three transgressions of Judah and for four I will not revoke the punishment,* because they have rejected the law of Yahweh and have not kept his rules, and their lies have led them astray, _⌊after which their ancestors walked_⌋!*

⁶ Thus says Yahweh: "For three transgressions of Israel and for four I will not revoke the punishment,* because they sell the righteous for money and the poor for a pair of sandals!

²⁷ And every unclean thing and one who practices* detestable things and falsehood will never enter into it, except those who are written in the book of life of the Lamb.

¹⁰ Do this so that innocent blood will not be shed* in the midst of your land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance and thereby bloodguilt would be on you.*

²⁵ 'Cursed be the one who takes a bribe _⌊to murder an innocent person_⌋.'* And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'

⁴ Also, for the blood of the innocent that he had shed—and he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood—Yahweh was not willing to forgive.

⁶ You destroy speakers of lies.* _⌊A man of bloodshed_⌋* and deceit Yahweh abhors.

⁴ _⌊With bald-faced pride_⌋* the wicked will not seek God. There is no God in any of his thoughts.

²⁷ For you deliver humble people, but haughty eyes you humiliate.

¹⁸ Let lying lips be dumb, that speak against the righteous* unrestrained with arrogance and contempt.

⁶ Therefore pride is their necklace; an outfit of violence covers them. ⁷ Their eye bulges from fat.* Imaginings overflow their heart. ⁸ They mock and speak maliciously of oppression; they speak as though from on high.

⁵ One who slanders his neighbor in secret, him I will destroy. One haughty of eyes and _⌊arrogant_⌋* of heart, him I will not endure.

² "Deliver my life, O Yahweh, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue." ³ What shall be given to you,* and what more shall be done to you, deceitful tongue?

My heart is not haughty nor my eyes _⌊arrogant_⌋.* And I do not _⌊concern myself_⌋* with things too great and difficult for me.

¹¹ If they say, "Come with us! We shall lie in wait for blood; we shall ambush the innocent without cause.*

²² An abomination of Yahweh are lips of deceit, but they who act faithfully are his delight.

⁵ A faithful witness does not lie, but he who breathes out falsehood is a witness of deceit.

⁷ _⌊Fine speech_⌋* is not becoming a fool, _⌊still less_⌋* is _⌊false speech_⌋* for a ruler.

⁴ Haughtiness of the eyes and pride of heart, the lamp of the wicked are sin.

²⁸ A tongue of deceit hates its victim, and a flattering mouth makes ruin.

¹³ There is a generation—how lofty are their eyes! And their eyelids they will lift.

¹⁵ And when you stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers,* I will not be listening. Your hands are full of blood.

¹¹ The _⌊haughty eyes_⌋* of humanity will* be brought low, and the pride of everyone will be humbled, and Yahweh alone will be exalted on that day.

⁹ The look on their faces testifies against them and they declare their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to their soul! For they have dealt out evil to themselves.

¹⁶ And Yahweh said: "Because* the daughters of Zion are haughty, and they walk with outstretched neck, and they give flirting glances with their eyes, _⌊mincing along as they go_⌋,* and _⌊with their feet they rattle their bangles_⌋,*

³ For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity. Your lips have spoken lies, your tongue speaks wickedness. ⁴ There is nobody _⌊who pleads with_⌋* justice, and there is nobody who judges with honesty. They rely on nothing and speak vanity. They conceive trouble and beget iniquity; ⁵ they hatch viper eggs, and they weave a spider web. One who eats their eggs dies, and that which is pressed is hatched as a serpent. ⁶ Their webs cannot become clothing, and they cannot cover themselves with their works. Their works are works of iniquity, and deeds* of violence are in their hands. ⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they hasten to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; devastation and destruction are in their highways.

¹ Hear the word of Yahweh, O children of Israel, for Yahweh has an indictment against the inhabitants of the land. There is no faithfulness or loyalty, there is no knowledge of God in the land. ² Swearing and lying, murdering and stealing, and adultery break out,* and bloodshed follows bloodshed.

⁴⁴ You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father! That one was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand firm in the truth, because truth is not in him. Whenever he speaks the lie, he speaks from his own nature,* because he is a liar and the father _⌊of lies_⌋.*

⁵ In the same way, younger men, be subject to the elders, and all of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

¹⁵ Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the sexually immoral people and the murderers and the idolaters and everyone who loves and who practices falsehood.

⁵ And Yahweh saw that the evil of humankind was great upon the earth, and every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was always* only evil.

¹⁶ for their feet run to evil, and they hurry to shed blood,

⁸ He who plans to do evil for* himself, they will call him "master* of mischief."

⁷ Their feet run to evil, and they hasten to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; devastation and destruction are in their highways.

¹⁷ Do not devise evil in your hearts against your neighbor, and do not love _⌊a false oath_⌋,* because all these are things I hate," _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood;

¹⁶ "You shall not testify against your neighbor with a false witness.

¹ " 'You will not _⌊spread_⌋* a false report. Do not lift your hand with the wicked to be a malicious witness.

¹⁶ If _⌊a malicious witness_⌋* gets up _⌊to accuse_⌋* anyone to testify against him falsely, ¹⁷ then the two men _⌊to whom the legal dispute pertains_⌋* shall stand _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, _⌊before_⌋* the priests and the judges who are in office in those days. ¹⁸ Then judges shall make a thorough inquiry, and if it turns out* that the witness is a false witness and he testified falsely against his brother, ¹⁹ then you shall do to him as he meant* to do to his brother, and so you shall purge the evil from your midst. ²⁰ _⌊And the rest_⌋* shall hear and shall fear, and _⌊they shall not continue to do such a thing again_⌋* as this evil thing in your midst.

¹⁰ Seat two men, _⌊scoundrels_⌋,* opposite him. Let them witness against him saying, 'You cursed God and the king.' Then you shall bring him out and stone him so that he dies." ¹¹ The men of his city and the elders and nobles who were living in his city did according to what Jezebel had sent to them, as was written in the letters which she had sent to them. ¹² They called a fast, and they seated Naboth at the head of the people. ¹³ Then the two men, _⌊scoundrels_⌋,* came, sat opposite him, and the _⌊scoundrels_⌋* witnessed against Naboth before the people, saying, "Naboth cursed God and the king," so they brought him outside of the city and stoned him with stones, and he died. ¹⁴ They sent to Jezebel saying, "Naboth has been stoned, and he is dead." ¹⁵ It happened at the moment Jezebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and died, Jezebel said to Ahab, "Get up, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite which he had refused to give to you for money, for Naboth is not alive, but dead."

¹² Do not give me over to the desire of my enemies, because false witnesses have arisen against me, and each breathing out violence.*

¹¹ Violent witnesses rise up; they ask me concerning what I do not know.

¹⁷ He who will speak truth will reveal righteousness, but the witness of falsehood, deceit.

²⁸ A person of perversity will spread dissent, and he who whispers separates a close friend.

⁵ A witness of falsehood will not go unpunished, and he who breathes lies will not escape.

⁹ A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes lies will perish.

¹⁰ Drive out a scoffer and strife will go out; quarrel and abuse will cease.

¹⁸ Like a club and sword and a sharp arrow is a man who bears false witness against his neighbor.

²⁰ For lack of wood, a fire goes out, and where there is no whisperer, quarreling will cease.

¹⁹ For from the heart come evil plans, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, abusive speech.

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus in order that they could put him to death.

¹³ And they put forward false witnesses who said, "This man does not stop speaking words against the holy place* and the law!

²³ But avoid foolish and uninformed controversies, because you* know that they produce quarrels.

¹⁴ But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and tell lies against the truth. ¹⁵ This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. ¹⁶ For where there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there is disorder and every evil practice.

¹⁸ And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace among* those who make peace.

⁹ I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who wants to be first among them, does not acknowledge us. ¹⁰ Therefore, if I come, I will call attention to _⌊the deeds he is doing_⌋*, disparaging us with evil words. And not being content with these, he does not receive the brothers himself, and he hinders those wanting to do so and throws them out of the church.

¹⁸ "_⌊If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son_⌋* who _⌊does not listen to_⌋* the voice of his father and to the voice of his mother, and they discipline him, and he does not obey* them,

¹⁶ 'Cursed be the one who dishonors his father or his mother.' And all of the people shall say, 'Amen.'

⁸ My child, may you keep* your father's instruction, and do not reject your mother's teachings, ⁹ for they are a garland of favor for your head, and pendants for your neck.

¹ My child, guard my sayings; store my commandments with you. ² Keep my commands and live, and my teaching like the _⌊apple of your eye_⌋.* ³ Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart. ⁴ Say to wisdom,* "you are my sister," and you shall call insight,* "_⌊intimate friend_⌋."*

²² Listen to your father—he who _⌊gave you life_⌋,* and do not despise your mother when* she is old.

¹¹ There is a generation that will curse its father, and its mother it will not bless.

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

¹⁶ And it will be as a sign on your hand and as symbolic ornaments between your eyes that with strength of hand Yahweh brought us out from Egypt."

⁸ And you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as an emblem between your eyes.

³ May loyal love* and truth not forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them upon your heart.

⁶ Do not forsake her—then she will guard you; love her and she will keep you.

²¹ May they not escape from your _⌊sight_⌋;* keep them in the midst of your heart.

³ revealing that you are a letter of Christ, delivered by us, inscribed not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on stone tablets but on tablets of human hearts.

⁴ As for the works of humankind, by the word of your lips, I have kept from the ways of the violent.

³ Send your light and your truth; they shall lead* me. They shall bring me to _⌊your holy mountain_⌋* and to your dwelling places.

⁹ How can a young man keep his way pure? By taking heed according to your word.

¹¹ In my heart I have hidden your word,* so that I may not sin against you.

²⁴ Your testimonies are my delight, _⌊my counselors_⌋.*

⁵⁴ Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my sojourning.

⁹⁷ How I love your law! The whole day it is my meditation.

¹⁴⁸ My eyes anticipate the night watches, that I may meditate on your word.

¹¹ Discretion will watch over you; understanding will protect you,

²³ Then you will walk in the confidence of your ways, and your foot will not stumble. ²⁴ If you sit down, you will not panic,* and if you lie down, then your sleep shall be sweet.

¹⁸ And he will turn his face to the coastlands, and he will capture many, but* a commander will end his insults to him _⌊so that instead his insults will turn back upon him_⌋.* ¹⁹ And he will turn back his face toward* the strongholds of his land, but he will stumble and he will fall and will not be found. ²⁰ "Then in his place will arise one sending an official throughout the glory* of his kingdom, and _⌊in a few days_⌋* he will be broken, but not in anger and not in battle. ²¹ And in his place a despicable person will arise on whom* they have not conferred the majesty of the kingdom, and he will come in _⌊without warning_⌋* and he will seize the kingdom by deceit.

¹⁷ " 'You* shall not hate your* brother in your* heart; you* shall surely rebuke your* fellow citizen, so that you* do not incur sin _⌊along with_⌋* him.

⁸ The precepts of Yahweh are right, making the heart rejoice. The command of Yahweh is pure, enlightening the eyes.

⁹⁸ Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, because they* are ever with me. ⁹⁹ I have more insight than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. ¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the elders, for I keep your precepts.

¹⁰⁵ Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

⁵ Let a righteous one strike me in kindness, and let him chasten me. It is oil for my head;* let not my head refuse. For still my prayer is against their evil deeds.

¹⁸ She is a tree of life for those who seize her; those who take hold of her are considered happy.

⁴ he taught me and said to me, "May your heart hold fast to my words; guard my commandments and live.

¹³ Seize the instruction! Do not let go! Guard her, for she is your life.

¹² and say "How I hated discipline, and I despised reproof!"

²⁴ The path of life leads upward for him who has insight, in order to turn away from Sheol below.

³¹ The ear of him who listens to admonitions of life, in the midst of the wise it will lodge.

¹⁵ As for a rod and reproof, they* will give wisdom, but a neglected child is disgraced by his mother.

²⁰ for teaching and for testimony?" _⌊surely they who speak like this have no dawn_⌋.*

⁸ "And to this people you shall say, 'Thus says Yahweh, "Look, I am setting _⌊before you_⌋* the way of life and the way of death.

¹⁹ and we possess as more reliable the prophetic word, to which you do well if you* pay attention to it as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,

⁵ Remember therefore from where you have fallen, and repent and do _⌊the works you did at first_⌋*. But if you do not, I am coming to you, and I will remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent.

¹⁶ in order to deliver you from a strange woman, from a foreign woman who flatters* with her sayings,

³ For the lips of the strange woman will drip honey, and smoother than oil is her mouth.*

⁵ In order to guard yourself from _⌊an adulteress_⌋,* from the foreigner who _⌊makes her words smooth_⌋.*

²⁶ I myself found that more bitter than death is the woman who is a trap, whose heart is a snare, and whose hands are bonds. The one who pleases God escapes from her, but the sinner is caught by her.

² It happened _⌊late one afternoon_⌋* that David got up from his bed and walked about on the roof of the king's house, and he saw a woman bathing on her* roof. ³⁰ When Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it, so she painted her eyes with black eye paint and adorned her head and looked through the window.

⁹ You have stolen (my) heart, my sister bride! You have stolen my heart with one glance from your eyes, with one ornament from your necklaces.

²⁸ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

¹⁴ But each one is tempted when he* is dragged away and enticed by his own desires. ¹⁵ Then desire, after it* has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it* is brought to completion, gives birth to death.

³⁶ All the remainder of your household will come to bow down _⌊before_⌋* him for a bit of silver or a loaf of bread and will say, "Please assign me to one of the _⌊priestly offices_⌋* so that I can eat a morsel of bread." '"

¹⁰ lest strangers take their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner,

²³ until an arrow pierces his _⌊entrails_⌋,* like a bird rushing into a snare, but he does not know that _⌊it will cost him his life_⌋.*

³ A man who loves wisdom will make his parents glad, but the friend of prostitutes* will squander his wealth.

⁸ Men of scoffing set a city aflame, but the wise turn away wrath.

⁸ Therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: 'Because of your speaking falseness and because you envisioned a lie, therefore, look! I am against you!" _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh.

¹⁸ And you must say, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh: "Woe to _⌊those who sew_⌋* magic charm bands on all the wrists* of the hands of my people and _⌊those who make the veils_⌋* that are on the head of people of every height, to ensnare people's lives!* Will you ensnare the lives* of my people _⌊and keep yourselves alive_⌋?*

¹³ And after not many days, the younger son gathered everything and* went on a journey to a distant country, and there he squandered his wealth by* living wastefully. ¹⁴ And after* he had spent everything, there was a severe famine throughout that country, and he began to be in need. ¹⁵ And he went and* hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, and he sent him into his fields to tend pigs.

³⁰ But when this son of yours returned—who has consumed your assets with prostitutes—you killed the fattened calf for him!'

⁹ "If my heart has been enticed by a woman, and at my neighbor's doorway I have lain in wait, ¹⁰ let my wife grind for another, and let other men kneel over her, ¹¹ for that is a shameful act, and that is _⌊a criminal offense_⌋.* ¹² Indeed, that is a fire that will consume up to Abaddon, and it would uproot all my crop.

⁴ All of them commit adultery, like a burning oven whose baker has stopped from stirring the fire, and from kneading the dough until it is leavened. ⁵ On the day of our king, the princes became sick with the heat of wine;* he stretched out his hand with mockers. ⁶ Because they are kindled* like an oven, their heart burns within them; all night their anger _⌊smolders_⌋,* in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire. ⁷ All of them are hot as an oven, and they devour* their rulers. All their kings have fallen; there is none who calls to me amongst them.

⁵ So also the tongue is a small member of the body* and boasts great things. Behold how small a fire sets ablaze how great a forest!

¹⁸ Then Pharaoh called for Abram and said, "What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? ¹⁹ Why did you say 'She is my sister,' so that I took her to myself as a wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go."

⁴ Now Abimelech had not approached her, so he said, "my Lord, will you even kill a righteous people?" ⁵ Did not he himself say to me, 'She is my sister'? And she herself said, 'He is my brother.' With integrity of my heart and with cleanness of my hands I did this." ⁶ Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes,* I know that in the integrity of your heart you did this, and I also _⌊kept you from sinning_⌋* against me. Therefore, I did not allow you to touch her. ⁷ So now, return the wife of the man, for he is a prophet, so that he will pray for you and you will live. And _⌊if you do not return her_⌋,* know that you will certainly die, and all that are yours."

¹⁰ And Abimelech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have slept with your wife! Then you would have brought guilt upon us!" ¹¹ Then Abimelech instructed all the people, saying, "The one who touches this man or his wife shall certainly die."

¹⁰ " 'As for* a man who commits adultery with a man's wife, who commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, both the man who commits adultery and the woman who commits adultery shall surely be put to death.

³ David sent and inquired about the woman, and someone said, "Is this not Bathsheba the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?" ⁴ Then David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he slept with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness.) And she returned to her house.

⁹ Why have you despised the word of Yahweh by doing evil in his eyes?* Uriah the Hittite you have struck down with the sword, and his wife you have taken to yourself as wife! You have killed him with the sword of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋!* ¹⁰ So then, a sword will not turn away from your house forever, because you have despised me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife!'

²¹ And Ahithophel said to Absalom, "Go to the concubines of your father whom he left behind to watch over the house, then all of Israel will hear that you made yourself odious to your father, and _⌊all of your followers will be motivated_⌋!"*

⁵ An abomination of Yahweh are all who are arrogant of heart;* _⌊rest assured_⌋,* he will not go unpunished.

⁸ They were well-fed lusty horses, they neighed each to the wife of his neighbor. ⁹ Because of these things shall I not punish?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, "and on a nation who is like this, shall I not take revenge?

¹¹ And a man does a detestable thing with the wife of his neighbor, and a man defiles his daughter-in-law in wickedness, and a man sexually violates among* you his sister, the daughter of his father.

⁵ "Then I will approach you for judgment, and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers, and against those who swear _⌊falsely_⌋,* and against the oppressors of the hired worker with his wages, the widow and the orphan, and _⌊the abusers of_⌋* the alien,* and yet do not fear me," says Yahweh of hosts.

¹ Now concerning the things about which you wrote: "It is good for a man not to touch* a woman."

³⁹ "Can you hunt prey for the lion? And can you satisfy the hunger of strong lions

¹ * " 'If a man steals an ox or small livestock and slaughters it or sells it, he will make restitution with five cattle in place of the ox and with four sheep or goats in place of the small livestock. ² " 'If a thief is found in the act of breaking in and he is struck and he dies, there is not bloodguilt for him. ³ (If the sun has risen over him, there is bloodguilt for him. He will make full restitution. If _⌊he does not have enough_⌋,* he will be sold for his theft. ⁴ If indeed the stolen item is found _⌊in his possession_⌋* alive, from ox to donkey to small livestock, he will make double restitution.

⁶ He shall restore the ewe lamb fourfold because he has done this thing, and because he had no pity."

¹⁸ Returning the products of his toil, he will not swallow;* according to the profit of his trade, _⌊he will not enjoy_⌋,*

²⁵ And because* he did not have enough* to repay it,* the master ordered him to be sold, and his* wife and his* children and everything that he had, and to be repaid.

⁸ And Zacchaeus stopped and* said to the Lord, "Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I am giving to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone, I am paying it* back four times as much!"

⁹ He has no greater authority in this house than me, and he has not withheld anything from me except you, since you are his wife. Now how could I do this great wickedness and sin against God?" ¹⁰ And it happened that as she spoke to Joseph _⌊day after day_⌋,* he did not heed her to lie beside her or to be with her.

³⁹ Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has made all of this known to you there is no one as discerning and wise as you.

⁷ And I saw among the simple, I observed among the youth, a young man lacking _⌊sense_⌋,*

³⁶ But he who misses me injures himself.* All those who hate me love death."

⁴ "Whoever is simple, let him turn here." As for the one who lacks _⌊sense_⌋,* she says to him,

¹⁶ "Whoever is simple, may he turn here!" As for he who lacks _⌊sense_⌋,* she says to him, ¹⁷ "Stolen waters are sweet, and bread of secrecy is pleasant." ¹⁸ But he does not know that the dead* are there, in the depths of Sheol* are her guests.

²⁵ I set my mind to try to seek wisdom and the plan, and to know that wickedness is foolishness and that folly is delusion. ²⁶ I myself found that more bitter than death is the woman who is a trap, whose heart is a snare, and whose hands are bonds. ¹¹ whoredom_⌋.* Wine and new wine _⌊take away the understanding_⌋.* ¹² My people, consult _⌊their wooden idols_⌋,* and their divining rod gives them oracles; because a spirit of whoredom led them astray, and they played the whore from under their God.*

⁹ I will destroy you,* O Israel; who will help you?*

²² Claiming to be wise, they became fools, ²³ and exchanged the glory of the immortal God with the likeness of an image of mortal human beings and birds and quadrupeds and reptiles. ²⁴ Therefore God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to immorality, that their bodies would be dishonored among themselves,

⁴ Marriage must be held in honor by all, and the marriage bed be undefiled, because God will judge sexually immoral people and adulterers.

⁴ Unstable* as water, you shall not excel any longer, for you went up upon the bed of your father, then defiled it. You went up upon my couch!

¹⁹ And she put him to sleep on her lap; then she called the men* and shaved off seven locks of his head. Then she began to subdue him,* and his strength went away from him. ²⁰ And she said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" And he woke up from his sleep and said, "I will go out just like every other time and shake myself free," but he did not know that Yahweh had left him. ²¹ And the Philistines seized him, gouged his eyes, and brought him to Gaza. They tied him up with bronze shackles, and he became a grinder _⌊in the prison_⌋.*

⁵ because David did right in the eyes of Yahweh and he didn't turn aside from all that he commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.

²⁶ Did not King Solomon of Israel sin in this way? And among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Yet the foreign women made even him sin.

O Yahweh, do not rebuke me in your anger or chastise me in your wrath. ² For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has pressed down on me. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation. There is no health in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For my iniquities have passed over my head; like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds start to stink; they rot because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am bowed down; I am bent over greatly. All the day I go about mourning. ⁷ For my loins are full of burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁸ I am faint and crushed greatly; I groan because of the roaring of my heart.

Be gracious to me, O God, according to your loyal love. According to your abundant mercies, blot out my transgressions.

⁸ Make me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice.

⁹ lest you give your honor to the others, and your years to the merciless, ¹⁰ lest strangers take their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner, ¹¹ and you groan at your end, when your flesh and body are consumed,

⁶ and Jesse became the father of David the king.
And David became the father of Solomon by the wife* of Uriah,

¹⁴ if a spirit of jealousy comes over him, and he is jealous of his wife and she is defiled; or if a spirit of jealousy comes over him and he is jealous of his wife but she is not defiled,

¹¹ "Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, turned away my anger from among the _⌊Israelites_⌋* when he was jealous with my jealousy in their midst, and I did not destroy the _⌊Israelites_⌋* with my jealousy.

²⁹ When he entered his house he took a knife, and he grasped his concubine and cut her into twelve pieces; and he sent her throughout the whole territory of Israel. ³⁰ All who saw it said, "Nothing like this has ever been since the _⌊Israelites_⌋* went up from the land of Egypt until this day. Take note of it, consider it, and speak up."

⁴ Cruel is wrath and overwhelming is anger, but who will stand before jealousy?

⁶ Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is strong as death; passion is fierce as Sheol; its flashes are flashes of fire; it is a blazing flame.

²² Or are we attempting to provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than he is, are we?*

¹ Now Naaman was the commander of the army of the king of Aram. He was a great man before his master and _⌊highly regarded_⌋,* for by him Yahweh had given victory to Aram. Now the man was a mighty warrior, but he was afflicted with a skin disease.

³ When I was a son to my father, tender and alone before my mother,

¹³ She took hold of * him and kissed him. Her face was impudent, and she said to him,

²⁵ Before mountains had been shaped, before hills, I was brought forth.

⁹ So humanity is humbled; everyone is humbled, and you must not forgive them.

⁹ "And in turn I have made you despised and humbled before all the people, inasmuch as you are not keeping* my way, but are _⌊favoring your own instruction_⌋."*
