¹ The descendants* of Reuben and the descendants* of Gad had a very large number of livestock. And they saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and behold it was a place for livestock. ² The descendants* of Gad and the descendants* of Reuben came, and they said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, saying, ³ "Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon, ⁴ the land that Yahweh struck before the community of Israel, is a land of livestock, and your servants have livestock." ⁵ They said, "If we have found favor in _⌊your sight_⌋,* let this land be given to your servants as property; do not lead us across the Jordan." ⁶ But Moses said to the descendants* of Gad and to the descendants* of Reuben, "Will your brothers go to war while you yourselves live here? ⁷ Why are you discouraging the hearts of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* from crossing into the land that Yahweh gave to them? ⁸ This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to see the land. ⁹ When they went up to the valley* of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* so that they did not come to the land that Yahweh gave to them. ¹⁰ So _⌊Yahweh's anger burned_⌋* on that day, and he swore an oath, saying, ¹¹ 'The men who went up from Egypt, from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, will not see the land that I swore with an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob because they have not wholly followed me, ¹² except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they followed Yahweh wholly.' ¹³ And _⌊Yahweh became angry_⌋,* and he made them wander in the desert forty years until the entire generation who did evil in the _⌊sight of Yahweh_⌋* _⌊had died_⌋.* ¹⁴ Behold, you stand in the place of your fathers, a brood of sinful men, to increase still more _⌊Yahweh's fierce anger_⌋* against Israel. ¹⁵ If you turn from following him, he will again abandon them* in the wilderness, and you would have destroyed all these people." ¹⁶ They came near to him and said, "We will build sheep pens here for the flock of our livestock and cities for our little children; ¹⁷ but we ourselves will become armed and ready before the _⌊Israelites_⌋* until we have brought them to their place, and our little children will live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land. ¹⁸ We will not return to our houses until the _⌊Israelites_⌋* each obtain their* inheritance for themselves. ¹⁹ For we will not take possession with them from across the Jordan and beyond because our inheritance has come to us from across the Jordan to the east." ²⁰ So Moses said to them, "If you do this thing, if you arm yourselves _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh for the war, ²¹ and everyone of you armed cross the Jordan _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh until he has driven out his enemies from before him, ²² and the land is subdued _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, then afterward you will return and be free of obligation from Yahweh and from Israel, and this land will be your property _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh. ²³ But if you do not do so, behold, you have sinned against Yahweh, and know that your sin will find you. ²⁴ Build for yourselves cities for your little children and sheep pens for your flocks; what has gone out from your mouth you will do." ²⁵ So the descendants* of Gad and the descendants* of Reuben said to Moses, saying, "Your servants will do just as my lord commands. ²⁶ Our little children, our wives, our livestock, and all of our animals* _⌊will remain_⌋* in the cities of Gilead, ²⁷ but your servants, everyone who is armed for battle, will cross over _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh to the war, just as my lord says." ²⁸ So Moses commanded them, Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the _⌊families_⌋* of the tribes of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ²⁹ Moses said to them, "If the descendants* of Gad and the descendants* of Reuben, everyone who is armed for the war, cross over the Jordan _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, and the land is subdued before you, you will give them the land of Gilead as property. ³⁰ But if they will not cross over with you armed, they will acquire land in your midst in Canaan." ³¹ The descendants* of Gad and the descendants of Reuben answered and said, "What Yahweh has commanded your servants, we will do. ³² We ourselves will cross over armed _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh to the land of Canaan, and the property of our inheritance will remain with us beyond the Jordan." ³³ So Moses gave to them, to the descendants* of Gad and the descendants* of Reuben, and to half of the tribe of Joseph's son Manasseh, the kingdom of Sihon the king of Amorites and the kingdom of Og the king of the Bashan, the land with its cities and their territories, the cities of the surrounding land. ³⁴ The descendants* of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, and Aroer, ³⁵ and Atroth Shophan, Jazer, and Jogbehah, ³⁶ and Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, the cities of Mibzar, and the sheep pens for flocks. ³⁷ The descendants* of Reuben rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, and Kiriathaim, ³⁸ and Nebo, Baal Meon (their names* were changed), and Sibmah, and _⌊they renamed_⌋* the cities that they rebuilt. ³⁹ The descendants* of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and they captured it and drove out the Amorites* who were in it. ⁴⁰ So Moses gave Gilead to Makir son of Manasseh, and he lived in it. ⁴¹ And Jair son of Manasseh went and captured their unwalled villages, and he called them Havvoth Jair. ⁴² Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah after his own name.

² Now Abram was very wealthy in livestock, in silver, and in gold.

⁵ And Lot, who went with Abram, also had herds and tents.

¹⁰ And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw the whole plain of the Jordan, that all of it was well-watered land—this was before Yahweh destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like the garden of Yahweh, like the land of Egypt _⌊in the direction of_⌋* Zoar. ¹¹ So* Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan. And Lot journeyed from the east, and so they separated _⌊from each other_⌋.*

³² Then Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she called his name Reuben, for she said, "Because Yahweh has noticed my misery, that I am unloved. Now my husband will love me."

¹⁰ And Zilpah, the female slave of Leah, bore a son to Jacob. ¹¹ Then Leah said, "Good fortune!" And she called his name Gad.

⁴ And they said to Pharaoh, "We have come to sojourn in the land, for there is no pasture for your servant's flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. So now, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen."

³⁸ And also a _⌊mixed multitude_⌋* went up with them and sheep and goats and cattle, very numerous livestock.

¹⁰ "The standard of the camp of Reuben will be to the south according to their divisions. The leader of the descendants will be Elizur son of Shedeur. ¹¹ And his division and the _⌊ones counted_⌋* are forty-six thousand five hundred. ¹² Those encamped next to him will be the tribe of Simeon. The leader of the descendants of Simeon will be Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. ¹³ And his division and the _⌊ones counted_⌋* are fifty-nine thousand three hundred. ¹⁴ For the tribe of Gad: the leader of the descendants of Gad will be Eliasaph son of Reuel. ¹⁵ And his division and the _⌊ones counted_⌋* are forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.

³² Moses sent to explore Jaazer; they captured _⌊its environs_⌋* and dispossessed the Amorites* who were there.

⁵ Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, the descendants* of Reuben: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites;* ⁶ of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites;* of Carmi, the clan of the Carmites.* ⁷ These are the clans of the Reubenites,* and the ones counted of them were forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty.

¹⁵ The descendants* of Gad according to their clans: of Zephon, the clan of the Zephonites;* of Haggi, the clan of the Haggites;* of Shuni, the clan of the Shunites;* ¹⁶ of Ozni, the clan of the Oznites;* of Eri, the clan of the Erites;* ¹⁷ of Arod, the clan of the Arodites;* of Areli, the clan of the Arelites;* ¹⁸ These were the clans of the descendants* of Gad according to the ones counted of them, forty thousand five hundred.

³ "Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo, and Beon,

²⁶ Our little children, our wives, our livestock, and all of our animals* _⌊will remain_⌋* in the cities of Gilead,

³⁵ and Atroth Shophan, Jazer, and Jogbehah,

²⁵ Their territory was Jazer and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* up to Aroer, _⌊which is east of Rabbah_⌋;*

⁵ They crossed over the Jordan and camped at Aroer to the south of the city, which was in the middle of the wadi of Gad, and up to Jazer.

⁸ For Heshbon withers the fields, the vine of Sibmah; rulers of nations have broken down her tendrils, they reached up to Jazer, they wandered to the desert; her shoots spread abroad, they crossed over the sea. ⁹ Therefore I weep with the weeping of Jazer for the vine of Sibmah. I drench you with my tears,* Heshbon and Elealeh, for a jubilant shout has fallen over your summer fruit and harvest.

¹⁹ And I will restore Israel to its pasture, and it will feed on Carmel, and in Bashan, and on the hills* of Ephraim, and in Gilead its hunger will be satisfied.

¹⁴ Shepherd your people with your staff, the flock of your inheritance, those dwelling alone in a forest in the midst of Carmel. Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead, as in the days of old.

¹⁶ because everything that is in the world—the desire of the flesh and the desire of the eyes and the arrogance of material possessions—is not from the Father, but is from the world.

²⁵ Israel took all these cities, and Israel inhabited all the cities of the Amorites,* in Heshbon, and in all its environs.* ²⁶ Because Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites,* who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land from his hand until Arnon.

²⁸ Because fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the* high places of Arnon.

¹⁷ Heshbon and its cities that are on the plateau; Dibon, Bamoth Baal, Beth Baal Meon,

¹⁹ Kiriathaim, Sibmah, and Zereth Shahar on the hill of the valley;

²⁶ When Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the towns that are _⌊along the Arnon_⌋,* for three hundred years,* why did you not recover them at that time?

²² And you gave them kingdoms and nations and allotted them a portion. They took into possession the land of Sihon king of Heshbon and the land of Og king of Bashan.

² It has gone up to the house,* and Dibon to the high places for weeping over Nebo, and Moab wails over Medeba. _⌊Every head is bald_⌋,* every beard is shaved. ³ They gird themselves with sackcloth in its streets; on its roofs and public squares everyone wails, going down in weeping. ⁴ And Heshbon and Elealeh cry* out, their voice is heard as far as Jahaz; therefore the armed ones of Moab cry out; its soul quivers* for him.

⁶ For the waters of Nimrim are wastelands; for the grass has withered, the vegetation has vanished, there is no greenness.

² The glory of Moab is no longer. In Heshbon they planned evil against her. Come and let us cut her off from being a nation. Also, Madmen, you will be silent. After you will go the sword.

²² and on Dibon, and on Nebo, and on Beth-diblathaim, ²³ and on Kiriathaim, and on Beth-gamul, and on Beth-meon,

³² More than the weeping of Jazer I weep for you, O vine Sibmah. Your branches cross over the sea, up to the sea of Jazer they reach. Upon your summer fruit and upon your vintage the destroyer has fallen.

³⁴ From the cry for help of Heshbon, up to Elealeh, up to Jahaz, they give their voice, from Zoar up to Horonaim, up to Eglath-shelishiyah, for even the waters of Nimrim have become as a desolation.

⁴⁵ "In the shadow of Heshbon fugitives stand without strength, for a fire has gone out from Heshbon, and a flame from Sihon. And it has eaten the forehead of Moab, and the skulls* of the people* of tumult.

²⁴ But Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and they took possession of his land from Arnon to Jabbok, until the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* because the boundary of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* was strong.

³⁴ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Do not fear him because I will give him and all his people and all his land into your hand. You will do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites,* who was living in Heshbon."

²⁴ Arise,* set out and cross over the wadi* of Arnon. Look! I have given Sihon the Amorite, the king of Heshbon, and his land into your hand; begin to take possession of it, and engage with him in battle. ²⁵ This day I will begin to place _⌊the dread of you_⌋* and the fear of you _⌊before_⌋* the peoples under all the heavens. They will hear _⌊the report about you_⌋,* and so they will shake and tremble _⌊because of you_⌋.' * ²⁶ "So I sent messengers from the wilderness* of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon; I sent terms of peace, _⌊saying_⌋,* ²⁷ 'Let me cross through your land and _⌊only along the road_⌋* I will go; I will not turn aside to the right or to the left. ²⁸ Food for money you shall sell me, so that I may eat, and water for money you will give to me, so that I may drink; just let me cross on foot. ²⁹ Just as the descendants* of Esau did for me, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, until I cross the Jordan into the land that Yahweh our God is giving to us.' ³⁰ But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing to let us cross through his territory because Yahweh your God hardened his spirit and _⌊made him obstinate_⌋* _⌊in order to give him_⌋* into your hand, _⌊just as he has now done_⌋.* ³¹ Yahweh said to me, 'Look! I have begun to give _⌊over to you_⌋* Sihon and his land; begin _⌊to take possession of his land_⌋.'* ³² Then Sihon and all his people came out to meet us for battle at Jahaz. ³³ And so Yahweh our God gave him over _⌊to us_⌋,* and we struck him down, and his sons* and all of his people. ³⁴ So we captured all of his cities at that time, and we destroyed each town of males and the women and the children; we did not leave behind a survivor. ³⁵ We took only the livestock as spoil for ourselves,* and also the booty of the cities that we had captured.

¹⁹ Behold, your servant has found favor in your eyes and _⌊you have shown me great kindness_⌋* in saving my life. But I cannot flee to the mountains, lest the disaster overtake me and I die.

³⁷ Even with me Yahweh was angry because of you, saying, 'Not even you shall enter there.

²⁵ Let me cross over, please, and let me see the good land _⌊that is beyond the Jordan_⌋,* this good hill country and Lebanon.' ²⁶ But Yahweh was very angry with me because of you, and he would not listen to me, and Yahweh said, '_⌊Enough of that from you_⌋!* You shall not speak to me any longer about this matter!

⁷ And Joshua said, "Ah, my Lord! Why did you bring this people across the Jordan to give us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us? If only we had been content and stayed beyond the Jordan.

¹⁰ And she fell on her face and bowed down to the ground and said to him, "Why have I found favor in your eyes by recognizing me—for I am a foreigner?"

³ Then David _⌊took an oath_⌋* again and said, "Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he thought, 'Do not let Jonathan know this, lest he worry.' But _⌊as Yahweh lives_⌋* and _⌊as your soul lives_⌋,* surely there is merely a step between me and death!"

²² Joab fell with his face to the ground and did obeisance. And he blessed the king, and he* said, "Today your servant knows that I have found favor in your eyes, my lord the king, in that the king has granted the request of his servant."

² When the king saw Queen Esther standing in the courtyard she found favor in his eyes, and the king held out the gold scepter that was in his hand to Esther, and Esther approached and touched the top of the scepter.

² Thus says Yahweh:
"The people of the survivors of the sword found grace in the desert;* Israel going to find their rest."

¹¹ Uriah said to David, "The ark and Israel and Judah are living in the booths; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping on the surface of the open field; and I, shall I go to my house to eat and to drink and to sleep with my wife? By your life and the life of your soul, I surely will not do this thing."

⁵ it does not behave dishonorably, it _⌊is not selfish_⌋*, it does not become angry, it does not keep a record of wrongs,

⁴ each of you* not looking out for _⌊your own interests_⌋*, but also each of you for _⌊the interests_⌋* of others.

²⁷ And they told him,* "We came to the land that you sent us, and it is flowing of milk and honey; this is its fruit.

⁴ They set out from Mount Hor by the way of the _⌊Red Sea_⌋* to go around the land of Edom; but _⌊the people became impatient_⌋* along the way.

⁹ When they went up to the valley* of Eshcol and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* so that they did not come to the land that Yahweh gave to them.

²⁸ Where can we go up? Our brothers have _⌊made our hearts melt_⌋,* _⌊saying_⌋,* "The people are greater* and taller than we are,* and there are great fortified cities reaching up to heaven, and we saw the sons of the Anakites living there." '

¹³ Then Paul replied, "What are you doing weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be tied up, but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus!"

² "Send for yourself men, and let them explore the land of Canaan, which I am about to give to the _⌊Israelites_⌋;* _⌊from each tribe of his father send one man_⌋,* everyone a leader among them." ³ So Moses sent them from the desert of Paran on the command of Yahweh; all of the men were _⌊leaders_⌋* of the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ⁴ And these are their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur; ⁵ from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori; ⁶ from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; ⁷ from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph; ⁸ from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun; ⁹ from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu; ¹⁰ from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi; ¹¹ from the tribe of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi; ¹² from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli; ¹³ from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael; ¹⁴ from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi; ¹⁵ from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki. ¹⁶ These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to explore the land. And Moses called Hoshea son of Nun Joshua. ¹⁷ Moses sent them to explore the land of Canaan, and he said to them, "Go up like this to the Negev,* and go up into the hill country, ¹⁸ and you will see what the land is like and if the people who inhabit it are strong or weak, or whether they are few or many, ¹⁹ and whether the land that they are inhabiting is good or bad, and whether the cities they are inhabiting are camps or fortifications, ²⁰ and whether the land is fertile or lean, and whether there are trees on it or not. You will show yourself courageous, and you will take some of the fruit of the land." It was the time of first ripe grapes. ²¹ So they went up and explored the land from the desert of Zin until Rehob, at Lebo Hamath.* ²² They went up through the Negev* and came to Hebron, where* Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai the descendants of the Anakites were. (Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) ²³ And they came up to the valley* of Eshcol, and they cut off a vine branch and one cluster of grapes from there; they carried it on a pole between two men, with pomegranates and figs. ²⁴ That place he called the valley* of Eshcol on account of the cluster of grapes that the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cut off from there. ²⁵ They returned from exploring the land at the end of forty days.* ²⁶ And they came* to Moses and Aaron and to the entire community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in the desert of Paran at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the community, and they showed them the fruit of the land.

² And all the _⌊Israelites_⌋* grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and all the community said to them, "If only we had died in the land of Egypt or in this desert!

¹⁹ "Then we set out from Horeb, and we went through the whole of that great and terrible desert that you saw on the way to the hill country of the Amorites* as Yahweh our God had commanded us, and so we came up to Kadesh Barnea. ²⁰ I said to you, '_⌊You have reached_⌋* the hill country of the Amorites* that Yahweh our God is giving to us. ²¹ See, Yahweh your God has set before you the land; go up and possess it as Yahweh the God of your ancestors* said to you; do not fear and do not be dismayed.' ²² "Then all of you approached me, and you said, 'Let us send men _⌊before us_⌋,* and let them explore the land for us, and let them bring back _⌊a report_⌋* to us concerning the way that _⌊we should take_⌋* and concerning the cities that we shall come to.' ²³ The plan was good _⌊in my opinion_⌋,* and so I took from among you twelve men, _⌊one from each tribe_⌋.* ²⁴ And they _⌊set out_⌋* and _⌊went up into the hill country_⌋,* and they went up to the wadi* of Eschol, and they spied out the land. ²⁵ They took in their hands* _⌊some of the fruit_⌋* of the land, and they brought it down to us, and they brought to us back _⌊a report_⌋,* and they said, 'The land that Yahweh our God is giving to us is good.'

⁶ Then the descendants* of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal; and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, "You know the word that Yahweh said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea concerning you and me. ⁷ _⌊I was forty years old_⌋* when Moses Yahweh's servant sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and I returned _⌊with an honest report_⌋.*

²³ And they came up to the valley* of Eshcol, and they cut off a vine branch and one cluster of grapes from there; they carried it on a pole between two men, with pomegranates and figs.

²⁴ And they _⌊set out_⌋* and _⌊went up into the hill country_⌋,* and they went up to the wadi* of Eschol, and they spied out the land. ²⁵ They took in their hands* _⌊some of the fruit_⌋* of the land, and they brought it down to us, and they brought to us back _⌊a report_⌋,* and they said, 'The land that Yahweh our God is giving to us is good.' ²⁶ But you were not willing to go up, and you rebelled against the _⌊command_⌋* of Yahweh your God. ²⁷ And you grumbled in your tents, and you said, 'Because of the hatred of Yahweh toward us he has brought us out from the land of Egypt to give us into the hand of the Amorites* to destroy us. ²⁸ Where can we go up? Our brothers have _⌊made our hearts melt_⌋,* _⌊saying_⌋,* "The people are greater* and taller than we are,* and there are great fortified cities reaching up to heaven, and we saw the sons of the Anakites living there." '

¹¹ And Yahweh said to Moses, "How long until this people will despise me, and how long until they will not believe in me, and in all the signs that I have done in their* midst?

²¹ but as I am alive, the glory of Yahweh will fill all the earth.

²³ they will not see the land that I swore by oath to their ancestors,* and all those who despised me will not see it.

²⁹ in this desert your corpses will fall, and all your counted ones, according to all your number, from _⌊twenty years old_⌋* and above who grumbled against me.

³⁴ "Then Yahweh heard the sound of your words, and he was angry, and he swore, _⌊saying_⌋,* ³⁵ 'No one of these men* of this evil generation will see the good land that I swore to give to your ancestors,* ³⁶ except Caleb, the son of Jephunneh; he himself* shall see it, and to him I will give the land upon which he has trodden and to his sons* because _⌊he followed Yahweh unreservedly_⌋.'* ³⁷ Even with me Yahweh was angry because of you, saying, 'Not even you shall enter there. ³⁸ Joshua, the son of Nun, _⌊your assistant_⌋,* will go there; encourage him because he will cause Israel to inherit it. ³⁹ And your little children, who you thought shall become plunder, and your sons, who do not today know good or bad, shall themselves* go there, and I will give it to them, and they shall take possession of it. ⁴⁰ But you turn and set out in the direction of the wilderness by way of the _⌊Red Sea_⌋.'*

¹¹ Therefore I swore in my anger, 'They shall surely not enter into my rest.'"

¹⁵ And also _⌊I myself swore_⌋* to them in the desert not to bring them into the land that I had given to them, flowing with milk and honey—it is the most beautiful of all of the lands—

⁸ do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness, ⁹ where your fathers tested me by trial and saw my works ¹⁰ for forty years. Therefore I was angry with this generation, and I said, 'They always go astray in their heart, and they do not know my ways.' ¹¹ As I swore in my anger, '_⌊They will never enter_⌋* into my rest.'"* ¹² Watch out, brothers, lest there be in some of you an evil, unbelieving heart, with the result that you fall away* from the living God. ¹³ But encourage one another _⌊day by day_⌋*, as long as it is called "today," so that _⌊none of you become hardened_⌋* by the deception of sin. ¹⁴ For we have become partners of Christ, if indeed we hold fast the beginning of our commitment steadfast until the end, ¹⁵ _⌊while it is said_⌋*,
"Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion."* ¹⁶ For who, when they* heard it, were disobedient? Surely it was not all who went out from Egypt through Moses? ¹⁷ And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ And to whom did he swear they would not enter into his rest, except those who were disobedient? ¹⁹ And so we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.

²⁴ But my servant Caleb, because another spirit was with him, he remained true after me, and I will bring him into the land that _⌊he entered_⌋,* and his offspring will take possession of it.

²⁸ Say to them, 'Surely as I live,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh, 'just as you spoke _⌊in my hearing_⌋,* so I will do to you; ²⁹ in this desert your corpses will fall, and all your counted ones, according to all your number, from _⌊twenty years old_⌋* and above who grumbled against me. ³⁰ You yourselves will not come into the land that _⌊I swore by oath_⌋* to make you to dwell in it, but Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

² "_⌊Take a census_⌋* of the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* from _⌊those twenty years old_⌋* and above, according to _⌊their families_⌋,* all who are able to go out to war in Israel."

⁶⁴ And among these there was not a man of those counted by Moses and Aaron the priest, who counted the _⌊Israelites_⌋* in the desert of Sinai. ⁶⁵ For Yahweh said to them, "They will surely die in the desert." And not a man was left over from them, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

³⁵ 'No one of these men* of this evil generation will see the good land that I swore to give to your ancestors,*

¹⁴ Now the _⌊length of time_⌋* that we had traveled from Kadesh Barnea until the time when we crossed the wadi* of Zered was thirty-eight years, until the perishing of all of that generation; that is, the men of war from the midst of the camp as Yahweh had sworn to them. ¹⁵ The hand of Yahweh was against them to root them out from the midst of the camp until they perished completely.

⁸ My companions who went up with me made the hearts* of the people melt, but I remained true to Yahweh my God. ⁹ And Moses swore on that day, saying, 'Surely the land that your foot has trodden on will be an inheritance to you and your sons forever, because you remained true to Yahweh my God.'

³⁰ You yourselves will not come into the land that _⌊I swore by oath_⌋* to make you to dwell in it, but Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

⁶⁵ For Yahweh said to them, "They will surely die in the desert." And not a man was left over from them, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

³⁶ except Caleb, the son of Jephunneh; he himself* shall see it, and to him I will give the land upon which he has trodden and to his sons* because _⌊he followed Yahweh unreservedly_⌋.'*

³³ And your children will be shepherds in the desert forty years,* and you will bear your unfaithfulness until _⌊all your corpses have fallen_⌋* in the desert. ³⁴ According to the number of the days* that you explored the land, forty days,* _⌊a day for each year_⌋,* you will bear your sins forty years,* and you will know my opposition.' ³⁵ I, Yahweh, have spoken; I will surely do this to all this evil community who has banded together against me. In this desert they will come to an end, and there they will die."

³³ And he consumed their days with futility * their years with terror.*

⁵ But God was not pleased with the majority of them, for they were struck down in the desert.

³ And when Adam had lived one hundred and thirty years, he fathered a child in his likeness, according to his image. And he called his name Seth.

²¹ And Yahweh smelled the soothing fragrance, and Yahweh said _⌊to himself_⌋,* "_⌊Never again will I curse_⌋* the ground for the sake of humankind, because the inclination of the heart of humankind is evil from his youth. _⌊Nor will I ever again destroy_⌋* all life as I have done.

³⁴ "Then Yahweh heard the sound of your words, and he was angry, and he swore, _⌊saying_⌋,* ³⁵ 'No one of these men* of this evil generation will see the good land that I swore to give to your ancestors,*

¹³ After all that has come upon us for our evil practices and for our great guilt—you, our God, have held back less than our guilt deserved and you have given us a remainder such as this. ¹⁴ Shall we again break your commandments and intermarry with the peoples who practice these detestable things? Would you not be angry with us until you destroy us with no remnant or remainder?

¹⁰ Then Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, "You have broke faith and married foreign women, increasing the guilt of Israel.

²⁴ So the children* went in and took possession of the land. You subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites; you gave them into their hand, and their kings and the nations of the land to do with them according to their pleasure. ²⁵ And they captured fortified cities and a fertile land and took possession of houses filled with every good thing: hewn cisterns, vineyards, olive groves, and many fruit trees. They ate and became full, and they became fat and took delight in your great goodness. ²⁶ "But they rebelled and were rebellious against you and cast your law* behind their back and killed your prophets, who had warned them to turn back to you, and they did great blasphemies.

¹⁸ Did not your ancestors* do this also, and our God brought on us all of this disaster and on this city too? Now you are adding fierce wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath!"

⁴ "Who can bring a clean thing from an unclean thing? No one!*

⁵⁷ And they turned and were treacherous like their ancestors.* They twisted like a crooked* bow.

⁴ Ah, sinful nation, a people heavy with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly. They have forsaken Yahweh; they have despised the holy one of Israel. They are estranged and gone backward.

⁴ At whom do you make fun? At whom do you _⌊open_⌋* your mouth and _⌊stick out_⌋* your tongue? Are you not children of transgression, offspring of deception,

⁶ Look! It is written before me: I will not be silent, but I will repay; and I will repay in* the fold of their garment ⁷ your iniquities and the iniquities of your ancestors* together, says Yahweh, because they made smoke offerings on the mountains and they taunted me on the hills, I will measure their punishment from the beginning into the fold of their garment."

²¹ But the children rebelled against me; _⌊they did not walk in my statutes_⌋,* and _⌊they did not observe my regulations_⌋,* which if a person does them, then he will live by them. My Sabbaths they desecrated, and I decided to pour out my rage on them, to finish my anger against them in the desert.

³¹ Thus you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets! ³² And you—fill up the measure of your fathers! ³³ Serpents! Offspring of vipers! How will you escape from the condemnation to hell?

⁴⁸ As a result you are witnesses, and you approve of the deeds of your fathers, because they killed them and you build their tombs!*

⁵¹ "You stiff-necked people and uncircumcised in hearts and in your* ears! You constantly resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so also do you! ⁵² Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who announced beforehand about the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become,

¹⁴ " 'But* if you do not listen to me and you do not carry out* all these commands, ¹⁵ and if you reject my statutes and if your inner self* abhors my regulations, to not carry out* all my commands by your breaking my covenant, ¹⁶ I _⌊in turn_⌋* will do this to you: then* I will summon onto you horror, the wasting disease, and the fever that wastes eyes and that drains away life; and you shall sow your seed _⌊in vain_⌋,* and your enemies shall eat it. ¹⁷ And I will set my face against you, and you shall be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; and your haters shall rule over you, and you shall flee away, but* there shall not be _⌊anybody who is pursuing_⌋* you. ¹⁸ " 'And if in spite of these things you do not listen to me, then* I will continue to discipline you seven times for your sins.

³⁰ You yourselves will not come into the land that _⌊I swore by oath_⌋* to make you to dwell in it, but Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. ³¹ But your little children, whom you said would be plunder, I will bring them, and they will know the land that you rejected. ³² But for you, all your corpses will fall in this desert.

¹⁵ "_⌊And then_⌋* if you do not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God _⌊by diligently observing_⌋* all of his commandments and his statutes that I am commanding you _⌊today_⌋,* then all of these curses shall come upon you, and they shall overtake you: ¹⁶ "You shall* be cursed in the city, and you shall be cursed in the field. ¹⁷ "Your basket shall be cursed and your kneading trough. ¹⁸ "The fruit of your womb shall be cursed and the fruit of you ground, the calves of your cattle and the lambs of your flock. ¹⁹ "You shall be cursed _⌊when you come in_⌋,* and you shall be cursed _⌊when you go out_⌋.* ²⁰ "Yahweh will send upon you* the curse,* the panic,* and the threat* _⌊in everything that you undertake_⌋,* _⌊until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly_⌋* _⌊because of_⌋* the evil of your deeds in that* you have forsaken me. ²¹ Yahweh will cause the plague to cling to you _⌊until it consumes you_⌋* from the land that you are going to,* to take possession of it. ²² Yahweh will afflict you with the wasting diseases and with the fever and with the inflammation and with the scorching heat and with the sword* and with the blight and with the mildew, and they shall pursue you _⌊until you perish_⌋.* ²³ And your heavens that are over your heads shall be like bronze, and the earth that is under you shall be like iron. ²⁴ Yahweh will change the rain of your land to fine dust and to sand; from the heaven it shall come down upon you _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋.* ²⁵ "Yahweh shall cause you to be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; on one road you shall go _⌊against_⌋* them,* but you will flee on seven roads _⌊before_⌋* them,* and you shall become a thing of horror to all of the kingdoms of the earth. ²⁶ And your dead bodies shall be as food for all of the birds of the heaven and to the animals of the earth, and there shall not be _⌊anyone to frighten them away_⌋.* ²⁷ "Yahweh shall afflict you with the boils of Egypt and with tumors and with the scurvy and with _⌊the skin rash that cannot be healed_⌋.* ²⁸ Yahweh shall afflict you with madness and with blindness and with confusion of heart. ²⁹ And you shall be groping at noon just as the blind person gropes in the dark, and you shall not succeed in finding your way, and you shall only be abused and robbed _⌊all the time_⌋,* and there will not be _⌊anyone who will rescue you_⌋. * ³⁰ You shall become engaged to a woman, but another man shall sleep* with her; you shall build a house, but you shall not live in it; a vineyard you shall plant, but you shall not enjoy it. ³¹ Your ox shall be slaughtered before your eyes, and you shall not eat it; your donkey shall be stolen right _⌊before you_⌋,* and it shall not be returned to you; your sheep and your goats shall be given to your enemies, and _⌊there shall not be anyone who rescues you_⌋.* ³² Your sons and your daughters shall be given to other people, and _⌊you will be looking on_⌋* _⌊longingly_⌋* for* them all day, _⌊but you will be powerless to do anything_⌋.* ³³ A people that you do not know shall consume the harvest of your land and all your labor, and you will be only oppressed and crushed _⌊for the rest of your lives_⌋.* ³⁴ You shall become mad _⌊because of what your eyes shall see_⌋.* ³⁵ Yahweh shall strike you with grievous boils on the knees and on the upper thighs from which _⌊you will not be able to be healed_⌋,* from the sole of your foot and up to your crown. ³⁶ Yahweh will bring you and your king whom you set up over you to a nation that you or your ancestors* have not known, and there you will serve other gods of wood and stone. ³⁷ And you will become a horror and a proverb and ridicule among all the peoples where Yahweh drives you there. ³⁸ "You shall carry out much seed to the field, but you shall gather little produce, for the locust shall devour it. ³⁹ You shall plant vineyards and you shall dress* them, but you shall not drink wine and you shall not gather grapes, for the worm shall eat it.* ⁴⁰ There shall be olive trees for you in all of your territory, but you shall not anoint yourself, for your olives* shall drop off. ⁴¹ You shall bear sons and daughters, but they shall not be _⌊yours_⌋,* for they shall go into captivity. ⁴² The cricket shall take possession of all your trees and the fruit of your ground. ⁴³ The alien that is in your midst shall ascend over you, higher and higher, but you shall go down lower and lower. ⁴⁴ He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, but you shall be the tail. ⁴⁵ "And all of these curses shall come over you, and they shall pursue you, and they shall overtake you _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋,* because _⌊you did not listen_⌋* to the voice of Yahweh your God, _⌊by observing_⌋* his commandments and his statutes that he commanded you. ⁴⁶ And they shall be among you as a sign and as a wonder and among your offspring _⌊forever_⌋.* ⁴⁷ "_⌊Because_⌋* of the fact that you did not serve Yahweh your God with joy and with gladness of heart for the abundance of everything, ⁴⁸ then you shall serve your enemies, whom Yahweh will send against you under conditions of famine, in thirst, in nakedness, and in a lack of everything; and he shall place* a yoke of iron on your neck _⌊until he has destroyed you_⌋.* ⁴⁹ Yahweh will raise up against you a nation from far off, from the end of the earth, attacking as the eagle swoops down, _⌊a nation whose language you will not understand_⌋,* ⁵⁰ _⌊a grim-faced nation_⌋* _⌊who does not show respect_⌋* to the old and the young and does not show pity. ⁵¹ And it* shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋,* and who will not leave for you any grain, wine, and olive oil, _⌊calves of your herds_⌋,* and _⌊lambs of_⌋* your flock _⌊until it has destroyed you_⌋.* ⁵² And it shall besiege you in all your towns _⌊until your high and fortified walls fall_⌋,* which you are trusting in* _⌊throughout your land_⌋;* and it shall besiege you in all of your towns in all of your land that Yahweh your God has given to you. ⁵³ And you shall eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and your daughters, whom Yahweh your God gave to you, _⌊during the siege and during the distress_⌋* your enemy inflicts upon you. ⁵⁴ The most refined and the very sensitive* man among you _⌊shall be mean with his brother_⌋* and _⌊against his beloved wife_⌋* and against the rest* of his children that he has left over, ⁵⁵ _⌊by refraining from giving_⌋* to even one of them any of the meat of his children that he eats, because there is not anything that is left over for him _⌊during the siege and distress_⌋* that your enemy inflicts upon you. ⁵⁶ The most refined and the most delicate woman among you, who shall* not venture to put the sole of her foot on the ground from being so delicate and from such gentleness, _⌊shall be mean to her beloved husband_⌋* and against her son and against her daughter, ⁵⁷ and even concerning her afterbirth _⌊that goes out_⌋* from between her feet and also concerning her children that she bears, because she eats them for lack of anything in secret _⌊during the siege and during the distress_⌋* that your enemy inflicts upon her in your _⌊towns_⌋.* ⁵⁸ "If _⌊you do not diligently observe_⌋* all the words of this law written in this scroll by revering this glorious and awesome name, Yahweh your God, ⁵⁹ then Yahweh shall overwhelm you with your plagues and the plagues of your offspring, severe plagues and lasting illnesses, grievous and enduring. ⁶⁰ And he shall bring back upon you all the diseases of Egypt concerning which _⌊you were in dread_⌋* _⌊because of them_⌋.* ⁶¹ Also any illness and any plague* that is not written in the scroll of this law, he shall bring them, Yahweh, upon you until you are destroyed. ⁶² And you shall remain _⌊only a few people_⌋* in place of the fact you were formerly as the stars of heaven as far as number is concerned, because you did not listen to the voice of Yahweh your God. ⁶³ _⌊And then_⌋* as Yahweh delighted over you _⌊to make you prosperous_⌋* to make you numerous, so Yahweh shall delight over you to exterminate you* and to destroy you, and so you shall be plucked from the land that you are going there to take possession of it. ⁶⁴ And Yahweh shall scatter you among all the nations from one end of the earth up to the other end of the earth, and there you shall serve other gods that you have not known nor* your ancestors,* gods of wood and stone. ⁶⁵ And among these nations you shall not find rest, and there shall not be a resting place for the sole of your foot, and Yahweh shall give you there an anxious heart and a weakening of eyes* and a languishing of your inner self.* ⁶⁶ And _⌊your life shall hang in doubt before you_⌋,* and you shall be startled* night and day, and you shall not be confident of your life. ⁶⁷ In the morning you shall say, '_⌊If only it was evening_⌋!'* and in the evening you shall say '_⌊If only it was morning_⌋!'* because of the dread of your heart that you shall feel, and because of the sight of your eyes that you shall see. ⁶⁸ And Yahweh shall bring you back to Egypt in ships by the route that I _⌊promised_⌋* to you that '_⌊You shall not see it again_⌋!'* And you shall sell yourself there to your enemies as slaves and as female slaves, but there will not be a buyer."

¹⁷ However, if your heart turns aside and you do not listen and you are lured away and you bow down to other gods and you serve them, ¹⁸ I declare to you _⌊today_⌋* that you will certainly perish; _⌊you will not extend your time_⌋* on the land that you are crossing the Jordan to go there to take possession of it. ¹⁹ I invoke as a witness against you _⌊today_⌋* the heaven and the earth: life and death I have set _⌊before you_⌋,* blessing and curse. So choose life, so that you may live, you and your offspring,*

¹⁶ "Thus says all the congregation of Yahweh: 'What is this treachery that you have committed against the God of Israel by turning away today from following Yahweh, by building for yourselves an altar to rebel today against Yahweh? ¹⁷ Is not the sin of Peor _⌊enough for us_⌋,* from which we have not cleansed ourselves today, and for which a plague came to the congregation of Yahweh, ¹⁸ that you must turn today from following Yahweh? If you rebel today against Yahweh, tomorrow he will be angry with all of the congregation of Israel;

¹⁹ "But if you turn yourselves away and forsake my ordinances and my commandments which I have given before you all and will go and serve other gods and bow down to them, ²⁰ then I will uproot them from upon my land that I have given to them, and this house that I have consecrated for my name I will send away from before my face, and I will make it a proverb and a taunt among all the nations. ²¹ And as for this house, which was exalted, all who pass by it will be appalled and will say, 'Why has Yahweh done thus to this land and to this house?' ²² Then they will say, 'Because they forsook Yahweh, the God of their ancestors,* who brought them out from the land of Egypt, and they laid hold of other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore he has brought upon them all this evil.'"

² And he went out before Asa and said to him, "Hear me, O Asa and all of Judah and Benjamin! Yahweh is with you while you are with him. And if you will seek him he will be found by you. But if you forsake him he will forsake you.

²³ And all your wives and your children will be led out to the Chaldeans, and you will not escape from their hand, but by the hand of the king of Babylon you will be seized, and this city will burn with fire."

⁷ Woe to the world because of causes for stumbling, for it is a necessity that causes for stumbling come; nevertheless, woe to the person through whom the cause for stumbling comes.

¹⁵ For if because of food, your brother is grieved, you are no longer living according to love. Do not destroy by your food that person for whom Christ died.

²⁰ Do not destroy the work of God on account of food. All things are clean, but it is wrong for the person _⌊who eats and stumbles in the process_⌋*. ²¹ It is good not to eat meat or to drink wine or to do anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is weakened.*

¹¹ For the one who is weak—the brother for whom Christ died—is destroyed by your knowledge. ¹² Now if you* sin in this way against the brothers and wound their conscience, which is weak, you sin against Christ.

¹⁷ But Jacob traveled on to Succoth, and he built for himself a house, and he made shelters for his livestock. Therefore he called the name of the place Succoth.

²² of the tribe of the descendants* of Dan, the leader Bukki son of Jogli;

²⁹ Moses said to them, "If the descendants* of Gad and the descendants* of Reuben, everyone who is armed for the war, cross over the Jordan _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh, and the land is subdued before you, you will give them the land of Gilead as property. ³⁰ But if they will not cross over with you armed, they will acquire land in your midst in Canaan." ³¹ The descendants* of Gad and the descendants of Reuben answered and said, "What Yahweh has commanded your servants, we will do. ³² We ourselves will cross over armed _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh to the land of Canaan, and the property of our inheritance will remain with us beyond the Jordan."

¹⁸ "And I charged you all at that time when I said, "Yahweh has given you—to all of you—this land to possess. All the _⌊warriors_⌋* shall cross over, ready to fight, before your brothers, the _⌊Israelites_⌋.* ¹⁹ Only your wives and your little children and your livestock (I know that _⌊you have much livestock_⌋)* must stay in your towns that I have given you, ²⁰ until Yahweh shall give rest to your brothers as he did to you, and also they take possession of the land that Yahweh your God is giving to them beyond the Jordan; then they may return, each one to his possession that I have given to them.

¹² The children of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed before the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* as Moses told them. ¹³ About forty thousand armed for fighting crossed over before the presence of Yahweh to the plains of Jericho for battle.

¹ Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, ² and he said to them, "You have observed all that Moses Yahweh's servant commanded you, and you have listened* to my voice in all that I have commanded you; ³ you have not forsaken your kinsmen* these many days, up to this day, and you have observed the obligation of the command of Yahweh your God. ⁴ So then, Yahweh your God has given rest to your kinsmen,* just as he promised them; so then, turn and go to your tents to the land of your possession, which Moses Yahweh's servant gave to you beyond the Jordan. ⁵ Only be very careful to observe the commandment and law that Moses Yahweh's servant commanded you, to love Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, to hold fast to him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul."*

¹⁰ And Lot lifted up his eyes and saw the whole plain of the Jordan, that all of it was well-watered land—this was before Yahweh destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah—like the garden of Yahweh, like the land of Egypt _⌊in the direction of_⌋* Zoar. ¹¹ So* Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan. And Lot journeyed from the east, and so they separated _⌊from each other_⌋.* ¹² Abram settled in the land of Canaan, and Lot settled in the cities of the plain. And he pitched his tent toward Sodom.

¹² And they* took Lot, the son of the brother of Abram, and his possessions, and left. (Now he had been living in Sodom.)

³² We ourselves will cross over armed _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh to the land of Canaan, and the property of our inheritance will remain with us beyond the Jordan." ³³ So Moses gave to them, to the descendants* of Gad and the descendants* of Reuben, and to half of the tribe of Joseph's son Manasseh, the kingdom of Sihon the king of Amorites and the kingdom of Og the king of the Bashan, the land with its cities and their territories, the cities of the surrounding land.

¹⁵ The two and a half tribes have taken their inheritance from beyond the Jordan across Jericho, east toward the sunrise."

¹⁴ Your wives, your little children, and your livestock, they will remain in the land that Moses gave to you beyond the Jordan. _⌊All of the best fighting men_⌋* will cross armed in front of your families; they will help you ¹⁵ until Yahweh gives rest to your families as well as to you. They will take possession of the land that Yahweh your God is giving to them. Then you will return to your own land and take possession of it, the land that Moses the servant of Yahweh gave you beyond the Jordan _⌊to the east_⌋."*

¹ These are the kings of the land whom the _⌊Israelites_⌋* defeated, and of whose land they took possession beyond the Jordon _⌊to the east_⌋,* from the wadi* of Arnon up to Mount Hermon, and all the Arabah* to the east: ² Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and ruled from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon, from the middle of the valley and half of Gilead, up to the _⌊Jabbok River_⌋,* which marks the border of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋;* ³ and the Arabah* up to the Kinnereth Sea* to the east, and as far as the sea of Arabah, the Salt Sea* to the east, _⌊in the direction of_⌋* Beth Jeshimoth, and to the area southward, _⌊at the foot of_⌋* the slopes of Pisgah;* ⁴ the territory of Og king of Bashan, one of the last of the Rephaites, who lived at Ashtaroth and Edrei ⁵ and ruled over Mount Hermon and Salecah and over all Bashan up to the border of the Geshurites* and the Maacathites,* and half of Gilead, as far as the border of Sihon king of Heshbon. ⁶ Moses Yahweh's servant and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* defeated them; and Moses Yahweh's servant gave it as a possession to the Reubenites,* the Gadites,* and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

⁸ With it* the Reubenites,* and the Gadites* received their inheritance, which Moses gave them beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses Yahweh's servant gave to them:

³² In those days, Yahweh began to reduce Israel, so Hazael defeated them in every territory of Israel, ³³ from the Jordan eastward: all of the land of Gilead, the Gadites, the Reubenites, and the Manassites, from Aroer which is on the Wadi Arnon and Gilead and Bashan.

²⁹ In the days of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath-Pileser the king of Assyria came and took Ijon, Abel-Beth-Maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, the Gilead, the Galilee, and all the land of Naphtali; then he deported them to Assyria.

²⁵ But they transgressed against the God of their ancestors* and prostituted themselves after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them. ²⁶ So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul, king of Assyria, and the spirit of Tiglath-Pilneser, king of Assyria, and he took them into exile, namely, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. And he brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river Gozan, until this day.

²¹ An inheritance acquired hastily _⌊at the beginning_⌋* will not be blessed at its end.

¹³ "Remember the word that Moses Yahweh's servant commanded you, saying, 'Yahweh your God is giving rest to you, and he is giving* you this land.'

² and he said to them, "You have observed all that Moses Yahweh's servant commanded you, and you have listened* to my voice in all that I have commanded you; ³ you have not forsaken your kinsmen* these many days, up to this day, and you have observed the obligation of the command of Yahweh your God. ⁴ So then, Yahweh your God has given rest to your kinsmen,* just as he promised them; so then, turn and go to your tents to the land of your possession, which Moses Yahweh's servant gave to you beyond the Jordan.

¹² And so we took possession of this land at that time, from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon, and also half of the hill country of Gilead and its towns I gave to the Reubenites* and to the Gadites.* ¹³ And the remainder of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh, the whole region of Argo. All of that area of Bashan was called the land of the Rephaim. ¹⁴ Jair the descendant* of Manasseh acquired the whole region of Argob, up to the boundary of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and he called it,* that is Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth Jair, _⌊as it still is today_⌋.* ¹⁵ And also I gave Gilead to Makir. ¹⁶ And to the Reubenites* and to the Gadites* I gave, from Gilead up to the wadi* of Arnon, the middle of the wadi* as a boundary and up to the Jabbok _⌊River_⌋,* the boundary of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋.* ¹⁷ And the _⌊Jordan Valley_⌋* with the Jordan River as its boundary, from Kinnereth* up to the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea,* with the slopes of Pisgah toward the east. ¹⁸ "And I charged you all at that time when I said, "Yahweh has given you—to all of you—this land to possess. All the _⌊warriors_⌋* shall cross over, ready to fight, before your brothers, the _⌊Israelites_⌋.*

²⁰ until Yahweh shall give rest to your brothers as he did to you, and also they take possession of the land that Yahweh your God is giving to them beyond the Jordan; then they may return, each one to his possession that I have given to them.

¹⁵ until Yahweh gives rest to your families as well as to you. They will take possession of the land that Yahweh your God is giving to them. Then you will return to your own land and take possession of it, the land that Moses the servant of Yahweh gave you beyond the Jordan _⌊to the east_⌋."*

¹⁹ If anyone goes outside the doors of your house, _⌊they will be responsible for their own death_⌋,* and we will be innocent. Anyone who will be with you in the house, _⌊we will be responsible for their death_⌋* _⌊if a hand is laid on them_⌋.*

³⁰ And Yahweh also gave it into the hand of Israel, and its king and all the people in it he struck with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋.* He left in it no survivor. He did to its king just as he did to the king of Jericho.

⁴² all of these kings and their land Joshua captured at one time, because Yahweh the God of Israel fought for Israel.

²³ Joshua took all the land according to all that Yahweh had spoken to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel, according to their tribal divisions, and the land rested from war.

²⁹ Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh; it was for the half-tribe of the descendants* of Manasseh according to their families. ³⁰ Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the settlements* of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, ³¹ and half of Gilead, with Ashtaroth, Edrei, and the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan; these were allotted to the children of Makir son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Makir according to their families. ³² These are the territories that Moses gave as an inheritance on the desert-plateau of Moab, beyond the Jordan, east of Jericho.

¹ The entire congregation of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* assembled at Shiloh, and they set up there the tent of meeting, and the land was subdued before them.*

⁴ So then, Yahweh your God has given rest to your kinsmen,* just as he promised them; so then, turn and go to your tents to the land of your possession, which Moses Yahweh's servant gave to you beyond the Jordan.

⁹ So the descendants* of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh returned home and departed with the _⌊Israelites_⌋* at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan, to go to the land of Gilead to the land of their possession, which they had acquired _⌊according to the command of Yahweh_⌋* through the hand of Moses.

²⁸ When David heard this afterwards, he said: "I and my kingdom are innocent _⌊before Yahweh_⌋* forever for the blood of Abner the son of Ner.

O God, we have heard with our ears; our ancestors* have told us of work you worked in their days, in days of old. ² You with your hand drove out the nations, but them* you planted. You harmed the peoples, but them* you let spread out. ³ For not with their sword did they possess the land, and their arm did not give them victory. Rather it was your right hand and your arm and the light of your presence, because you delighted in them. ⁴ You are my king, O God. Command* victories for Jacob.

⁵⁵ And he drove out nations before them and allocated them for an inheritance by boundary line, and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

⁷ If you do well _⌊will I not accept you_⌋?* But if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. And its desire is for you, but you must rule over it."

¹⁶ And Judah said, "What can we say to my lord? What can we speak? Now how can we show ourselves innocent? God has found the guilt of your servants! Behold, we are slaves to my lord, both we and also he in whose hand the cup was found."

¹⁴ " 'But* if you do not listen to me and you do not carry out* all these commands, ¹⁵ and if you reject my statutes and if your inner self* abhors my regulations, to not carry out* all my commands by your breaking my covenant, ¹⁶ I _⌊in turn_⌋* will do this to you: then* I will summon onto you horror, the wasting disease, and the fever that wastes eyes and that drains away life; and you shall sow your seed _⌊in vain_⌋,* and your enemies shall eat it. ¹⁷ And I will set my face against you, and you shall be defeated _⌊before_⌋* your enemies; and your haters shall rule over you, and you shall flee away, but* there shall not be _⌊anybody who is pursuing_⌋* you. ¹⁸ " 'And if in spite of these things you do not listen to me, then* I will continue to discipline you seven times for your sins. ¹⁹ And I will break the pride of your strength; and I will make your heaven like iron* and your land like copper. ²⁰ And your strength shall be consumed _⌊in vain_⌋;* and your land shall not give its produce, and the land's trees shall not give their fruit. ²¹ " 'And if you go against me in hostility and you are not willing to listen to me, then* I will add a plague onto you seven times according to your sins. ²² And I will send _⌊wild animals_⌋* out among you, and they shall make you childless, and they shall cut down your domestic animals, and they shall make you fewer; and your roads shall be desolate. ²³ " 'And if you do not accept correction from* me through these things, but* you go against me in hostility, ²⁴ then* I myself* will also go against you in hostility, and I myself* also will strike you seven times for your sins. ²⁵ And I will bring upon you a sword that seeks vengeance for the covenant, and you shall be gathered to your cities; and I will send a plague in your midst, and you shall be given into the hand of an enemy. ²⁶ At my breaking the _⌊supply_⌋* of bread* for you, then* ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall return your bread by weight; and you shall eat it, and you shall not be satisfied. ²⁷ " 'And if through this you do not listen to me and you go against me in hostility, ²⁸ then* I will go against you in hostile anger, and also* I myself* will discipline you seven times for your sins. ²⁹ And you shall eat the flesh of your sons; and the flesh of your daughters you shall eat. ³⁰ And I will destroy your high places, and I will cut down your incense altars, and I will place your corpses on your idols' corpses; and my inner self* shall abhor you. ³¹ And I will lay your cities in ruins, and I will lay waste your sanctuaries; and I shall not smell your sacrifices'* appeasing fragrance. ³² And I myself* will lay waste the land, and your enemies who are living in it shall be appalled over it. ³³ And I will scatter you among the nations, and I will draw a sword behind you; and your land shall be a desolation, and your cities shall be a ruin. ³⁴ Then the land shall enjoy its Sabbaths all the days of its lying desolate, and you shall be in the land of your enemies; then the land shall rest, and it shall enjoy its Sabbaths. ³⁵ All the days of its lying desolate it shall rest for the time* that it had not rested during your Sabbaths while you were living on it. ³⁶ As for* the ones who remain among you, I will bring* fearfulness in their hearts in the land of their enemies; and a sound of a windblown leaf shall pursue them, and they shall flee like flight _⌊before_⌋* a sword, and they shall fall, but* there shall not be a pursuer. ³⁷ And they shall stumble over _⌊one another_⌋* as _⌊from before_⌋* a sword, but* there shall not be a pursuer; and _⌊you shall have no resistance_⌋* _⌊before_⌋* your enemies. ³⁸ And you shall perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall eat you. ³⁹ And because of their guilt, the ones among you who remain shall decay in the land of their enemies; and also because of the iniquities of their ancestors,* they shall decay with them. ⁴⁰ " 'But* when they confess their guilt and the guilt of their ancestors* in their infidelity that they displayed against me, and moreover that they went against me in hostility— ⁴¹ I myself* also* went against them in hostility, and I brought them into the land of their enemies—or if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled and then they pay for their guilt, ⁴² I will remember* my covenant with Jacob; and I will remember also my covenant with Isaac and also my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. ⁴³ And the land shall be deserted by them, and it shall enjoy its Sabbaths in its being desolate from them, and they themselves* must pay for their guilt, _⌊simply because_⌋* they rejected my regulations, and their inner self* abhorred my statutes. ⁴⁴ And _⌊in spite of_⌋* this, _⌊when they are_⌋* in the land of their enemies I will not reject them, and I will not abhor them to destroy them, to break my covenant with them, because I am Yahweh their God. ⁴⁵ And I will remember the first covenant for them*—whom I brought out from the land of Egypt _⌊in the sight of_⌋* the nations _⌊to be their God_⌋.* I am Yahweh.'" ⁴⁶ These are the rules and the regulations and the laws that Yahweh gave between himself and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* on _⌊Mount Sinai_⌋* _⌊through_⌋* Moses.

⁸ You have put our iniquities before you, our hidden sins into the light of your countenance.

¹¹ And if I should say, "Surely darkness will cover me, and the light around me will be as night,"

¹¹ Do not let a _⌊slanderer_⌋* be established in the land; as for the man of violence, let evil hunt him quickly.

²¹ Misfortune will pursue sinners, but the righteous _⌊will be rewarded with prosperity_⌋.*

¹¹ Woe to the wicked!* It is bad! For what is done by his hands will be done to him.

¹ Look! The hand of Yahweh is not too short _⌊to save_⌋,* and his ear is not too dull _⌊to hear_⌋.* ² Rather, your iniquities have been _⌊barriers_⌋* between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you, from hearing.

¹² For our transgressions are numerous before you, and our sins _⌊testify_⌋* against us. Indeed, our transgressions are with us, and we know our iniquities:

⁹ There will be affliction and distress for every _⌊human being_⌋* who does evil, of the Jew first and of the Greek,

⁵ Therefore do not judge anything before the time, until the Lord should come, who will both enlighten the hidden things of darkness and will reveal the counsels of hearts, and then praise will come to each one from God.

² if a man makes a vow for Yahweh or swears an oath with a binding pledge on himself, he must not render his word invalid; he must do all that went out from his mouth.

¹⁶ They came near to him and said, "We will build sheep pens here for the flock of our livestock and cities for our little children;

³⁴ The descendants* of Gad rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, and Aroer, ³⁵ and Atroth Shophan, Jazer, and Jogbehah, ³⁶ and Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran, the cities of Mibzar, and the sheep pens for flocks. ³⁷ The descendants* of Reuben rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, and Kiriathaim, ³⁸ and Nebo, Baal Meon (their names* were changed), and Sibmah, and _⌊they renamed_⌋* the cities that they rebuilt. ³⁹ The descendants* of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, and they captured it and drove out the Amorites* who were in it. ⁴⁰ So Moses gave Gilead to Makir son of Manasseh, and he lived in it. ⁴¹ And Jair son of Manasseh went and captured their unwalled villages, and he called them Havvoth Jair. ⁴² Nobah went and captured Kenath and its villages, and he called it Nobah after his own name.

¹¹ So Aaron said to Moses, "Please, my lord, please do not put on us this sin in which we were foolish and in which we have sinned.

¹⁷ but we ourselves will become armed and ready before the _⌊Israelites_⌋* until we have brought them to their place, and our little children will live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

² And they said, "Yahweh commanded my lord to give the land by lot as an inheritance to the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and my lord was commanded by Yahweh to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.

¹² The children of Reuben, Gad, and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over armed before the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* as Moses told them.

⁴ for the weapons of our warfare are not merely human, but powerful to God for the tearing down of fortresses, tearing down arguments ⁵ and all pride that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

¹⁰ Finally, become strong in the Lord and in the might of his strength. ¹¹ Put on the full armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the stratagems of the devil, ¹² because our struggle is not against blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. ¹³ Because of this, take up the full armor of God, in order that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand. ¹⁴ Stand therefore, girding your waist with truth, and putting on the breastplate of righteousness, ¹⁵ and binding shoes under your feet with the preparation of the good news of peace, ¹⁶ in everything taking up the shield of faith, with which you are able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one, ¹⁷ and receive the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, ¹⁸ with all prayer and supplication praying at all times in the Spirit, and to this end being alert with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints,

⁷ I have fought the good fight, I have completed the race, I have kept the faith. ⁸ Finally, the crown of righteousness is reserved for me, that the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but also to all who have loved his appearing.

¹⁹ if, however, the land of your property is unclean, cross over to the land of Yahweh's property, where Yahweh's tabernacle resides,* and take possession among us. But you must not rebel against Yahweh or against us by building for yourselves an altar other than the altar of Yahweh our God.

²³ But Sihon did not allow Israel to go through his territory. Sihon gathered all his people and went out to meet Israel; he came to the desert, to Jahaz, and he fought against Israel. ²⁴ But Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and they took possession of his land from Arnon to Jabbok, until the _⌊Ammonites_⌋,* because the boundary of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* was strong. ²⁵ Israel took all these cities, and Israel inhabited all the cities of the Amorites,* in Heshbon, and in all its environs.* ²⁶ Because Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites,* who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land from his hand until Arnon. ²⁷ Thus the ones who quote proverbs say,
"Come to Heshbon! Let it be built! And let the city of Sihon be established. ²⁸ Because fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it consumed Ar of Moab, the lords of the* high places of Arnon. ²⁹ Woe to you, Moab! You have perished, people of Chemosh. He has given his sons as fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, to the king of the Amorites,* Sihon. ³⁰ We destroyed them; Heshbon has perished up to Dibon; we laid waste up to Nophah, which _⌊reaches_⌋* Medeba." ³¹ Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.* ³² Moses sent to explore Jaazer; they captured _⌊its environs_⌋* and dispossessed the Amorites* who were there. ³³ Then they turned and went up by the way of the Bashan, and Og king of the Bashan and all his people went out to meet them for battle at Edrei. ³⁴ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Do not fear him because I will give him and all his people and all his land into your hand. You will do to him just as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites,* who was living in Heshbon." ³⁵ And so they destroyed him and his sons, and all his people until they had not spared a survivor; and they took possession of his land.

¹⁴ For the tribe of the children of the Reubenites,* the children of the Gadites,* and the half-tribe of Manasseh took their inheritance according to the house of their families.*

³⁰ But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing to let us cross through his territory because Yahweh your God hardened his spirit and _⌊made him obstinate_⌋* _⌊in order to give him_⌋* into your hand, _⌊just as he has now done_⌋.* ³¹ Yahweh said to me, 'Look! I have begun to give _⌊over to you_⌋* Sihon and his land; begin _⌊to take possession of his land_⌋.'* ³² Then Sihon and all his people came out to meet us for battle at Jahaz. ³³ And so Yahweh our God gave him over _⌊to us_⌋,* and we struck him down, and his sons* and all of his people.

¹ "Then we turned, and we went up the road to Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan came out to meet us, he and all of his army for the battle at Edrei. ² And Yahweh said to me, 'You should not fear him, for I have given him and all of his army* and his land into your hand. And so you will do to him as you did to Sihon the king of the Amorites,* who was reigning in Heshbon.' ³ And so Yahweh our God also gave Og the king of Bashan, and all of his army* into our hand, and we struck him down until not a survivor remained to* him. ⁴ And we captured all of his towns* at that time; there was not a city that we did not take from them. ⁵ All of these were fortified towns with high walls, gates, and bars,* _⌊apart from_⌋* very many of the villages of the open country. ⁶ And so we destroyed them just as we had done to Sihon the king of Heshbon; we destroyed utterly each town of males, the women, and the little children. ⁷ But all of the livestock and the booty of the towns we kept as spoil for ourselves.* ⁸ "And so we took at that time the land from _⌊the control of_⌋* the two kings of the Amorites* who were _⌊on the other side of the Jordan_⌋,* from the wadi* of Arnon up to _⌊Mount Hermon_⌋.*

⁸ With it* the Reubenites,* and the Gadites* received their inheritance, which Moses gave them beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses Yahweh's servant gave to them: ⁹ from Aroer, which is on the edge of the wadi* of Arnon, and the city which is in the middle of the wadi, and all the plateau from Medeba up to Dibon; ¹⁰ and all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites,* who reigned in Heshbon up to the border of the _⌊Ammonites_⌋;* ¹¹ and Gilead, and the border of the Geshurite* and the Maacathites,* all of _⌊Mount Hermon_⌋,* and Bashan up to Salecah; ¹² all the kingdom of Og in Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei—he was left over from the survivors* of the Rephaim; these Moses had defeated and driven out. ¹³ But the _⌊Israelites_⌋* did not drive out the Geshurites* or the Maacathites;* Geshur and Maacah live among Israel to this day. ¹⁴ Only the tribe of Levites* Moses did not give an inheritance; the offerings made by fire to Yahweh the God of Israel are their* inheritance, just as he promised to them.*

¹⁸ The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had _⌊valiant_⌋* men who carried a shield and a sword, and archers, and who were expert in war, forty-four thousand seven hundred and sixty for going out as an army.

³¹ And from the half-tribe of Manasseh: eighteen thousand who were designated by name to come to make David king.

³² And his brothers, sons of ability, were two thousand seven hundred heads of the _⌊families_⌋,* and King David appointed them over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, for every matter of God and matter of the king.

¹⁸ And he killed mighty kings, for his loyal love endures forever. ¹⁹ Sihon the king of the Amorites, for his loyal love endures forever. ²⁰ And Og the king of Bashan, for his loyal love endures forever. ²¹ And he gave their land as an inheritance, for his loyal love endures forever.

²⁰ and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the territory of Moab, by the top of Pisgah, which overlooks the surface of the wasteland.

⁴⁵ They set out from Iyim and camped at Dibon Gad. ⁴⁶ They set out from Dibon Gad and camped at Almon-Diblatayim.

² The cities of Aroer will be deserted;* they will be for the flocks, and they will lie down and _⌊no one will frighten_⌋* them.

²⁷ Thus the ones who quote proverbs say,
"Come to Heshbon! Let it be built! And let the city of Sihon be established.

⁴ And Heshbon and Elealeh cry* out, their voice is heard as far as Jahaz; therefore the armed ones of Moab cry out; its soul quivers* for him.

¹⁸ And Isaac dug again the wells of water which they had dug in the days of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after the death of Abraham. And he gave* to them _⌊the same names_⌋* which his father had given* them.

¹³ " 'And you will be attentive to all that I have said to you, and you will not _⌊profess_⌋* the name of other gods; it will not be heard in your mouth.

⁷ so as not to go among these remaining nations with you; _⌊do not profess_⌋* the name of their gods, and do not swear by them, serve them, or _⌊bow down to them_⌋.*

⁴ Those who hurry after* another god increase their sorrows. I will not pour out their drink offerings of blood, nor take up their names on my lips.

¹ Bel bows down; Nebo is stooping. Their idols are _⌊on_⌋* animals* and _⌊on_⌋* cattle; your _⌊cargo_⌋* is carried as a burden _⌊on_⌋* weary animals.

²³ And Joseph saw Ephraim's children to the third generation. Moreover, the children of Makir, son of Manasseh, were born on the knees of Joseph.

²⁹ The descendants* of Manasseh: of Makir, the clan of the Makirites.* And Makir fathered Gilead; of Gilead, the clan of the Gileadites.*

¹ Then the allotment was made for the tribe of Manasseh, because he was the firstborn of Joseph. To Makir, the firstborn of Manasseh, the father of Gilead, _⌊were allotted_⌋* Gilead and Bashan, because he was a warrior.*

¹³ And the remainder of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh, the whole region of Argo. All of that area of Bashan was called the land of the Rephaim. ¹⁴ Jair the descendant* of Manasseh acquired the whole region of Argob, up to the boundary of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and he called it,* that is Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth Jair, _⌊as it still is today_⌋.* ¹⁵ And also I gave Gilead to Makir.

²⁹ Moses gave an inheritance to the half-tribe of Manasseh; it was for the half-tribe of the descendants* of Manasseh according to their families. ³⁰ Their territory was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the settlements* of Jair, which are in Bashan, sixty cities, ³¹ and half of Gilead, with Ashtaroth, Edrei, and the cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan; these were allotted to the children of Makir son of Manasseh, for half of the children of Makir according to their families.

¹⁴ Jair the descendant* of Manasseh acquired the whole region of Argob, up to the boundary of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and he called it,* that is Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth Jair, _⌊as it still is today_⌋.*

⁴ And he had thirty sons who would ride on thirty donkeys, and they had thirty towns that are in the land of Gilead that they called Havvoth Jair until this day.

¹³ Ben-Geber was in Ramoth-Gilead; the villages of Jair, the son of Manasseh which are in the Gilead were his, and the region of Argob which is in the Bashan, sixty great cities, with walls having crossbars of bronze, were his.

²¹ And afterward Hezron went in to the daughter of Makir the father of Gilead. And he married* her when he was sixty years old. And she bore Segub to him. ²² And Segub fathered Jair, and he had twenty-three cities in the land of Gilead. ²³ And Geshur and Aram took Havvoth-Jair from them, Kenath and its villages, sixty cities. All these were the _⌊descendants_⌋* of Makir, the father of Gilead.

¹⁸ (Now Absalom had taken and set up for himself in his lifetime a stone pillar that is in the valley of the king, because he said, "I have no son in order to remember my name," and he called the stone pillar by his name. It is called the monument of Absalom until this day).

¹¹ Within them they think their houses are forever, their dwelling places from generation to generation. They _⌊name_⌋* their lands by their own names.
