²⁰ "Why does he* give light to one in misery and life to those bitter of soul, ²¹ who wait for death, but* _⌊it does not come_⌋,* and search* for it more than for treasures, ²² who rejoice _⌊exceedingly_⌋,* and they are glad when they find the grave?

⁸ "_⌊O that_⌋* my request may come, and that God may grant my hope, ⁹ that* God would decide that* he would crush me, that he would let loose his hand and _⌊kill me_⌋.* ¹⁰ But* it will still be my consolation, and I would recoil in _⌊unrelenting_⌋* pain, for I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

¹⁵ So* my inner self* will choose* strangling— death more than my _⌊existence_⌋.*

¹⁸ Why is my pain endless, and my wound incurable? It refuses to become healed. Truly you are to me like a deceitful brook, waters that are not trustworthy.

¹⁸ _⌊Why_⌋* did I come out from the womb, to see toil, and sorrow, and to _⌊end my days in shame_⌋?*

³ And so then, Yahweh, please take my life from me, because for me death is better than life!"

⁸ _⌊And when the sun rose_⌋,* God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah's head and he grew faint. _⌊And he asked that he could die_⌋* and said, "My death is better than my life!" ⁹ So God said to Jonah, "_⌊Is it right for you to be angry_⌋* about the plant?" And he said, "_⌊It is right for me to be angry enough to die_⌋!"*

¹⁵ Yahweh has annulled your judgments; he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, Yahweh, is in your midst; you shall no longer fear misfortune.

²⁰ according to my eager expectation and hope, that I will be put to shame in nothing, but with all boldness, even now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether through life or through death. ²¹ For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain. ²² But if it is to live in the flesh, this is fruitful work for me, and which I will prefer I do not know. ²³ But I am hard pressed _⌊between the two options_⌋*, having the desire to depart and to be with Christ, _⌊for this is very much better_⌋*. ²⁴ But to stay on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.

⁴ And let endurance have its perfect effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing.
