²¹ Before I go—and I will not return— to the land of darkness and deep shadow,

²³ But now he is dead. Why should I be fasting? Am I able to return him again? I am going to him, but he cannot return to me."

¹⁴ For _⌊we must certainly die_⌋,* and we are as the waters spilled to the ground which cannot be gathered. God will not take a life but devises plans for a banished person not to be cast out from him.

⁵ Let darkness and deep shadow claim it; let clouds* settle on it; let them* terrify it with the blackness* of day.

¹³ For now I would lie down, and I would be at peace; I would be asleep; then _⌊I would be at rest_⌋*

⁸ The eye of the one seeing me will not see me; your eyes are upon me, but* _⌊I will be gone_⌋.* ⁹ A cloud vanishes, and it goes away, so he who goes down to Sheol will not come up. ¹⁰ He does not return again to his house, and his place does not recognize him again.

¹⁰ "But* a man dies, and he dwindles away; thus* a human being passes away, and where is he?* ¹¹ As water disappears from a lake, and a river withers away and dries up,* ¹² _⌊so_⌋* a man lies down, and he does not arise. _⌊Until the heavens are no more_⌋,* they will not awaken, and they will not be roused out of their sleep. ¹³ "_⌊O that_⌋* you would conceal me in Sheol, that you would hide me _⌊until your wrath is past_⌋,* that you would appoint a set time for me and remember me. ¹⁴ If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my compulsory service I will wait, until the coming of my relief.

¹¹ Is your loyal love told in the grave, or your faithfulness in the underworld?* ¹² Are your wonders* known in the darkness, or your righteousness* in the land of forgetfulness?

¹¹ I said, "I shall not see Yah! Yah in the land of the living! I shall no more look at humankind among the inhabitants of the world.

⁶ And they did not say, 'Where is Yahweh, the one who brought us up from the land of Egypt, the one who led us in the desert,* in a land of desert plains and gorges,* in a land of dryness and deep darkness, in a land _⌊that no one passes through_⌋,* and no human lives there?'
