¹ Then* Zophar the Naamathite answered and said, ² "Should an abundance of words go unanswered, or _⌊a man full of talk_⌋* be vindicated?* ³ Should your loose talk put people to silence? _⌊And when you mock, shall no one put you to shame_⌋?* ⁴ For you say, 'My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight.' ⁵ But,* _⌊O that_⌋* God might speak, and that he would open his lips to you, ⁶ and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom, for _⌊insight has many sides_⌋.* And know that God _⌊on your behalf_⌋* has forgotten _⌊some of_⌋* your guilt. ⁷ "Can you find out the essence of God, or can you find out _⌊the ultimate limits_⌋* of Shaddai? ⁸ _⌊It is higher than the heaven_⌋;* what can you do? It is deeper than Sheol; what can you know? ⁹ Its measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea. ¹⁰ "If he passes through and imprisons someone* _⌊and summons the assembly_⌋,* then* who can hinder him? ¹¹ For he knows _⌊those who are worthless_⌋;* _⌊when he sees_⌋* iniquity, _⌊he will not consider it_⌋.* ¹² But* _⌊an empty-headed person_⌋* will get understanding when* a wild donkey's colt is born as a human being. ¹³ "If you yourself* direct your heart and stretch out your hands to him— ¹⁴ if iniquity* is in your hand, put it far away, and you must not let wickedness reside in your tents— ¹⁵ surely then you will lift up your face without* blemish, and you will be firmly established and will not fear.* ¹⁶ For you yourself* will forget your misery; you will remember it as water that has flowed past. ¹⁷ "_⌊And your life will be brighter than noon_⌋;* its darkness will be like the morning. ¹⁸ And you will have confidence because there is hope; and you will be well protected—_⌊you will sleep in safety_⌋.* ¹⁹ And you will lie down, and _⌊no one will make you afraid_⌋;* _⌊and many will entreat your favor_⌋.* ²⁰ But* the eyes of the wicked will fail; and refuge will be lost to them, and their hope is _⌊to breathe their last breath_⌋."*

¹¹ Thus* Job's three friends heard of this calamity that had come upon him. So* each set out from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite. And they met* together to come to console him and to comfort him.

¹ Then* Zophar the Naamathite answered and said,

² "_⌊How long_⌋* will you say these things, and the words of your mouth be a mighty wind?

³ Is there a limit to windy words? What provokes you that you answer?

² "_⌊How long_⌋* _⌊will you* hunt for words_⌋?* Consider,* and afterward we shall speak.

¹¹ Do not let a _⌊slanderer_⌋* be established in the land; as for the man of violence, let evil hunt him quickly.

¹⁹ In many words, transgression is not lacking, but he who restrains his lips is prudent.

¹⁸ And even some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers were conversing with him, and some were saying, "What does this babbler want to say?" But others said,* "He appears to be a proclaimer of foreign deities," because he was proclaiming the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.

¹⁹ Understand this, my dear brothers: every person must be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger,

⁴ I am a laughingstock to my friends:* 'He calls on God, and he answers him.' A righteous, blameless man is a laughingstock.

⁴ "But* you* _⌊whitewash with lies_⌋;* all of you* are _⌊worthless healers_⌋.*

⁹ Will it be well, if he examines you?* Or can you* deceive him like deceiving a human being?

² "Should the wise answer with windy knowledge, and should he fill his stomach with the east wind? ³ Should he argue in talk that is not profitable or in words with which he cannot do good?

² _⌊Surely_⌋* mockery is with me, and my eye _⌊rests_⌋* on their provocation.

³ Bear with me, and I myself* will speak; then* after my speaking you can mock.

²⁵ "And if it is not so, then who can prove me a liar and reduce my word to nothing?"

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water?

¹⁶ Among the ungodly of the mockers at feasts,* they gnashed at me with their teeth.

¹⁶ Fill their faces with shame, that they may seek your name, O Yahweh.

¹⁷ I sat not in the assembly of jokers, nor did I exult. Because of the _⌊presence_⌋* of your hand I sat alone, for you filled me with indignation.

¹⁴ But if anyone does not obey our message through this letter, take note not to associate with him, in order that he may be put to shame.

⁸ a sound message beyond reproach, in order that _⌊an opponent_⌋* may be put to shame, because he* has nothing bad to say concerning us.

¹⁸ for they said to you,* "In the end time there will be scoffers following according to their own ungodly desires."

¹⁰ But* it will still be my consolation, and I would recoil in _⌊unrelenting_⌋* pain, for I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

²⁹ Please turn, let no injustice happen; indeed,* turn, _⌊my righteousness is still intact_⌋.* ³⁰ Is there injustice on my tongue? Or can my palate not discern calamity?*

²⁰ If I have sinned, what have I done to you, watcher of humanity? Why have you made me as a target for yourself, so that* I have become a burden to myself?*

² "Truly I know that it is so, but* how can a human being be just before God? ³ If he wants to contend with him, he cannot answer him one time in a thousand.

⁷ because of your knowledge that I am not guilty, and there is no escaping from your hand?

⁴ "Who can bring a clean thing from an unclean thing? No one!*

⁵ for Job has said, 'I am righteous, but God has taken away my justice. ⁶ Should I lie concerning my justice? Though I am without transgression, my wound caused by an arrow is incurable.'

² "Do you think this is justice when you say, '_⌊I am right_⌋* before God'?

¹⁵ but set Christ apart as Lord in your hearts, always ready to make a defense to anyone who asks you for an accounting concerning the hope that is in you.

³ _⌊O that_⌋* I knew and that I might find him; O that I might come to his dwelling. ⁴ I would lay my case _⌊before him_⌋,* and I would fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I want to know the words with which he would answer me, and I want to understand what he would say to me. ⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his strength? No, but he himself* would give heed to me. ⁷ There an upright person could reason with him, and I would be acquitted forever by my judge.

³⁵ _⌊O that_⌋* _⌊I had_⌋* someone hearing me! Here is my signature; let Shaddai answer me! _⌊As for_⌋* the written communication that _⌊my adversary_⌋* has written,

⁶ Look, before God _⌊I am like you_⌋;* I myself was also formed from clay. ⁷ Look, dread of me should not terrify you, and my hand will not be heavy upon you. ⁸ "Surely you have spoken in my ears, and I have heard the sound of your words:* ⁹ 'I am clean, without transgression; I am pure, and there is no guilt in me. ¹⁰ Look, he finds fault against me; he reckons me as his enemy; ¹¹ he puts my feet in the block; he watches all my paths.' ¹² "Look, in this you are not right—I will answer you: Indeed, God is greater than a human being. ¹³ Why do you contend against him, that he will not answer all a person's words? ¹⁴ Indeed, God speaks in one way, even* in two,* yet someone does not perceive it. ¹⁵ "In a dream, a vision of the night, when a deep sleep falls on men slumbering on their bed, ¹⁶ then he opens the ear of men, and _⌊he frightens them with a warning_⌋* ¹⁷ to turn human beings aside from their deeds, and he keeps man from pride. ¹⁸ He spares his life from the pit and his life from passing over the river of death.

¹ Then* Yahweh answered Job from the storm, and he said, ² "Who is this darkening counsel by words without knowledge?

¹ Then* Yahweh answered Job and said, ² "Shall a faultfinder contend with Shaddai? Anyone who argues with God must answer it." ³ So Job answered Yahweh and said, ⁴ "Look, I am insignificant. What shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. ⁵ Once I have spoken, and I will not answer; even* twice, but* I will not proceed."

⁸ "Indeed, would you annul my justice? Would you condemn me, so that you might be righteous?

⁷ _⌊And then_⌋* after Yahweh spoke these words to Job, Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "_⌊My wrath has been kindled_⌋* against you* and against the two of your friends, for you* have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has.

²⁹ "The hidden things _⌊belong to Yahweh_⌋* our God, but the revealed things _⌊belong to us_⌋* to know and to our children _⌊forever_⌋,* in order to do all the words of this law."

¹³ After all that has come upon us for our evil practices and for our great guilt—you, our God, have held back less than our guilt deserved and you have given us a remainder such as this.

⁴ He is wise in* heart and mighty in* strength; who has resisted him and succeeded?*

⁵ For your iniquity teaches your mouth, and you choose the tongue of the crafty.

⁸ Have you listened in God's confidential discussion? And do you limit wisdom to yourself?

¹¹ "Are the consolations of God too small for you, a word spoken gently with you?

²⁸ And to the human beings he said, 'Look, the fear of the Lord is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding.'"

¹⁴ Intimate fellowship with Yahweh is for those who fear him, and he makes known his covenant to them.

¹⁰ He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor repaid us according to our iniquities.

⁴³ Many times he delivered them, but they rebelled in their counsel, and were brought low by their iniquity. ⁴⁴ Yet he looked upon their distress when he heard their cry. ⁴⁵ And he remembered his covenant with them, and relented based on the abundance of his loyal love. ⁴⁶ And he _⌊let them find compassion_⌋* before all their captors.

²² The loyal love of Yahweh does not cease; his compassions do not come to an end.

²⁸ But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what it is that will be at the end of days. This is your dream and the visions of your head on your bed.

⁴⁷ The king answered Daniel and said, "_⌊Truly_⌋* your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings, and he reveals mysteries, for you are able to reveal this mystery."

³⁵ in order that what was spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled, who said,
"I will open my mouth in parables; I will proclaim what has been hidden since the creation."**

⁹ But just as it is written,
"Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and have not entered into the heart of man, all that* God has prepared for those who love him."* ¹⁰ For* to us God has revealed them through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. ¹¹ For who among men knows the things of a man, except the spirit of the man that is in him? Thus also no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.

⁵ (which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit):

⁹ He is doing great and _⌊unsearchable_⌋* things, marvelous things _⌊without number_⌋*—

¹⁴ Look, these are the outer fringes of his ways, and _⌊how faint is the word_⌋* that we hear of him! But* who can understand the thunder of his power?"

²³ As for Shaddai, we cannot attain him; he is exalted in power, and he does not oppress justice and abundant righteousness.

¹⁹ Your way was through the sea, and your path* through many waters. Yet your footprints were not discerned.*

³ Great is Yahweh, and very worthy of praise, and his greatness is unsearchable.

¹¹ He has made everything suitable in its time. He also has put _⌊the past_⌋* in their hearts, yet no one can grasp what God does from the beginning to the end.

²⁸ Have you not known, or have you not heard? Yahweh is the God of eternity, the creator of the ends of the earth! He is not faint, and he does not grow weary! There is no searching his understanding.

²⁷ All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and _⌊anyone to whom_⌋* the Son wants to reveal him.*

³³ Oh, the depth of the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how incomprehensible are his ways!

¹⁰ For* to us God has revealed them through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.

¹⁶ "For who has known the mind of the Lord; who has advised him?"* But we have the mind of Christ.

⁸ To me, the least of all the saints, was given this grace: to proclaim the good news of the fathomless riches of Christ to the Gentiles,

¹⁸ "But will God indeed dwell with humankind upon the earth? Look, the heavens and _⌊the highest heavens_⌋* cannot contain you! Surely then this house that I have built will not contain you!

¹² "Is not God in the height of the heavens? But* see how lofty are _⌊the highest stars_⌋.*

⁶ Sheol is naked before him, and there is no covering for Abaddon.

⁵ "Look at the heavens, and see; and observe the clouds that are higher than you.

¹¹ For as the heavens are high above the earth, so his loyal love prevails over those who fear him.

⁶ Such knowledge is too wonderful for me. It is set high; I cannot prevail against it. ⁷ Where I can go from your Spirit, or where can I flee from your presence? ⁸ If I ascend to heaven, there you are, and if I make my bed in Sheol, look! There you are.

¹³ let them praise the name of Yahweh, because his name alone is is exalted. His splendor is above earth and heavens.

² The glory of God* conceals things, but the glory of kings searches out things. ³ As heaven is to height and the earth is to depth, so is the heart* of kings—there is no searching.

⁹ "For as the heavens are _⌊higher_⌋* than the earth, so my ways are _⌊higher_⌋* than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

² If they dig into Sheol, from there my hand will take them, and even if they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down.

¹⁸ in order that you may be strong enough to grasp together with all the saints what is the breadth, and length, and height, and depth, ¹⁹ and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, in order that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.

²⁴ for he himself* looks to the end of the earth; he sees under all the heaven. ²⁵ _⌊When he gave_⌋* weight to the wind and he apportioned the waters by measure,

⁵ By awesome deeds in righteousness you will answer us, O God of our salvation, you who are the confidence of all the ends of the earth and of the far-off seas, ⁶ who established the mountains by his strength, the one who is girded with might, ⁷ who stills the roar of the seas, the roar of their waves, and the commotion of the peoples, ⁸ so that* the inhabitants of the farthest reaches are in awe of your signs. You make the dawn and sunset sing for joy.

⁹ If I lift up the wings of the dawn, and I alight on the far side of the sea, ¹⁰ even there your hand would lead me, and your right hand would hold me fast.

³⁰ How could one chase a thousand and two could cause a myriad to flee, if their Rock had not sold them, and Yahweh had not given them up?

¹⁸ for he himself* wounds, but* he binds up; he strikes, but* his hands heal.

¹² _⌊If_⌋* he would snatch away, who could turn him? Who could say to him, 'What are you doing?' ¹³ God will not turn back his anger; beneath him the helpers of Rahab bow.

¹⁴ If he tears down, then* it will not be rebuilt; if he shuts a man in, then* he cannot be freed.

²⁹ but he remains quiet, and who can condemn? And he hides his face, and who can behold him? Yet* he is over a nation and over a person alike,

⁸ "Or who shut the sea in with doors at its bursting, when it went out of the womb,

⁸ And you have not delivered me into the hand of the enemy. You have set my feet in a broad place.

²⁷ First to Zion, look! Look at them!
And I give a herald* of good tidings to Jerusalem.

³⁵ And all the dwellers of the earth are regarded as nothing, and he does _⌊according to_⌋* his desire in the host of heaven and among the dwellers of earth, and there is not one who can hold back his hand, or _⌊ask him_⌋,* 'What are you doing?'

⁷ "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:
"This is what the holy one, the true one, the one who has the key of David, the one who opens and no one can shut, and who shuts and no one can open, says:

¹³ And you ask, 'What does God know? Can he judge through deep gloom? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are a covering for him, so that he does not see; and he walks about on the dome of heaven.'

²¹ "Indeed, his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his steps. ²² There is no darkness, and there is no deep shadow where instigators of mischief might hide themselves. ²³ Indeed, he has not yet appointed a time for man to go to God in the judgment.

¹¹ He says in his heart, "God has forgotten. He has hidden his face. He never sees."

¹⁴ But you have seen; indeed you have noted trouble and grief to take it into your hand. The helpless abandons himself upon you; you have been the helper for the orphan.

²² You have seen, O Yahweh. Do not be deaf. O Lord, do not be far from me.

¹¹ Yahweh knows the thoughts of humankind, that _⌊they are to no purpose_⌋.*

⁸ Do not be surprised if you see the poor being oppressed with violence or do not see justice and righteousness in the province. For one official is watched by a higher official, and there are even higher officials over them!

⁹ The heart is deceitful more than anything else, and it is disastrous. Who can understand it? ¹⁰ I, Yahweh, examine the _⌊mind_⌋,* I test the _⌊heart_⌋,* and give to each one according to his way, according to the fruit of his deeds.

² _⌊But they did not consider_⌋* that I remember all their wickedness. Now their deeds surround them; they are before my face.

¹³ Your eyes are too pure to see evil, and you are not able to look at wrongdoing.* Why do you look at the treacherous? Why are you silent when the wicked swallows up someone more righteous than him?

²⁴ But Jesus himself did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people,* ²⁵ and because he did not _⌊need_⌋* anyone _⌊to testify_⌋* about man, for he himself knew what was in man.*

¹³ And no creature is hidden in the sight of him, but all things are naked and laid bare to the eyes of him to whom _⌊we must give our account_⌋*.

²³ And I will kill her children with deadly disease, and all the churches will know that I am the one who searches minds and hearts, and I will give to each one of you according to your deeds.

¹³ He is capturing the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are rushed.

⁵ Does the wild ass bray over grass, or the ox bellow over its fodder?

² "Truly indeed you* are the people, and wisdom will die with you.* ³ _⌊I also have insight_⌋* like you;* I am not more inferior than you.* And _⌊who does not know things like these_⌋?*

¹⁴ "What is a human being, that he can be clean, or* that one born of a woman can be righteous?

⁵ "Who has sent forth the wild ass free? And who has released the wild donkey's bonds, ⁶ to which I have given the wilderness as its house and the salt flat as its dwelling place? ⁷ It scorns the city's turmoil; it does not hear the driver's shouts. ⁸ It explores the mountains as its pasture and searches after every kind of green plant.

⁵ Behold, in iniquity I was born, and in sin my mother conceived me.

⁹ Only a vapor* are men of low degree, a deception are men of high degree. _⌊Weighed_⌋* in a balance, together they are lighter than a vapor. ¹⁰ Do not trust in extortion, and do not put vain confidence in robbery. If wealth increases, do not set your heart on it.

²² then I was brutish and ignorant. With you I was like the beasts.

⁶ The brutish man does not know, and the fool cannot understand this.

² Certainly I am more stupid than a man, and the understanding of humankind is not for me. ³ And I have not learned wisdom, nor will I know knowledge of the Holy One.* ⁴ Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in the hollow of his hand? Who has wrapped water in a* garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name and what is the name of his child? For surely you know.

¹⁸ I said to myself concerning _⌊humans_⌋,* "God sifts* them in order to show* them that they are like beasts."

²⁴ A wild ass accustomed to the desert,* in the desire of her soul. She gasps for wind in her rutting time. Who can quell* her lust? All those who seek her will not grow weary, in her month they will find her.

²² Claiming to be wise, they became fools,

¹⁶ Think the same thing toward one another; _⌊do not think arrogantly_⌋*, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise _⌊in your own sight_⌋*.

¹⁸ Let no one deceive himself. If anyone thinks himself to be wise among you in this age, let him become a fool, in order that he may become wise. ¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, for it is written, "The one who catches the wise in their craftiness,"* ²⁰ and again, "The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile."*

³ among whom also we all formerly lived in the desires of our flesh, doing the will* of the flesh and of the mind, and we were children of wrath* by nature, as also the rest of them were.

²⁰ But do you want to know, O foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?

¹³ Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by his* good behavior his works, with the humility of wisdom. ¹⁴ But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and tell lies against the truth. ¹⁵ This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. ¹⁶ For where there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there is disorder and every evil practice. ¹⁷ But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, obedient, full of mercy and good fruits, nonjudgmental, without hypocrisy,

³ And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, "If with all your heart you are turning to Yahweh, remove the foreign gods and Ashtoreths* from your midst. Commit your hearts to Yahweh and serve him alone. Then he will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines."

¹⁴ And he did evil, for he did not set his heart to seek Yahweh.

³ Nevertheless some good things have been found in regard to you, for you burned the Asherahs out of the land and set your heart to seek God."

⁸ "But I myself* will seek God, and to God I would commit my cause.

⁵ If you yourself* would seek God, then* you would plead to Shaddai for grace. ⁶ If you are pure and upright, indeed,* now he will rouse himself for you, and he will restore your righteous abode.

²¹ "Please reconcile yourself with him, and be at peace; _⌊in this way_⌋,* good will come to you. ²² Please receive instruction from his mouth, and place his words in your heart.

³¹ Ambassadors* will come from Egypt; Cush will quickly stretch out her hands to God.

⁸ and not be like their ancestors,* a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not make ready its heart, whose spirit was not faithful to God.

⁹ My eye languishes from misery. I call on you, O Yahweh, every day; I spread out my hands* to you.

⁶ I stretch out my hands to you; my soul longs for you like a dry land. Selah

⁴⁷ And that slave who knew the will of his master and did not prepare or do according to his will _⌊will be given a severe beating_⌋.*

⁷ "_⌊Think_⌋* now, who has perished who is innocent? Or* where are the upright destroyed?

⁵ Is not your wickedness great, and there is no end to your iniquities?

²³ If you return to Shaddai, you will be restored; if you remove wickedness from your tent,

³² teach me yourself _⌊what I cannot see_⌋;* if I have done wrong, I will not repeat it'?

² I will give attention to the way of integrity. When will you come to me? I will walk in the integrity of my heart in the midst of my house.

¹⁵ And when you stretch out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers,* I will not be listening. Your hands are full of blood.

³⁰ "Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, each one* according to his ways," _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh. "Repent* and turn around from all of your transgression, and it will not be as a stumbling block of iniquity to you. ³¹ Throw _⌊away from yourselves_⌋* all of your transgressions that you committed,* and make _⌊for yourselves_⌋* a new heart and new spirit, and so why will you die, house of Israel?

³ And he said to me, "This is the curse going out over the surface of the whole earth. For everyone who steals has gone unpunished* according to it, and likewise everyone who swears falsely has gone unpunished according to it. ⁴ 'I have sent it out,' _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh of hosts, 'and it will go into the house of the thief and into the house of the one swearing _⌊falsely by my name_⌋,* and it will spend the night in that* house and will destroy it, with its timber and its stone.'"

⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded!

⁵ but to Cain and to his offering he did not look with favor. And Cain became very angry, and his face fell. ⁶ And Yahweh said to Cain, "Why are you angry, and why is your face fallen?

¹⁵ If I am guilty, woe to me! But* if I am righteous, I dare not lift my head; I am filled with shame, and just look at my misery!

²⁶ Indeed, then you will delight yourself in Shaddai, and _⌊you will expect that God will be good to you_⌋.*

God is our refuge and strength, a very sufficient help in troubles.

⁶ For he will not be shaken forever; the righteous _⌊will be remembered forever_⌋.* ⁷ He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is steadfast, secure* in Yahweh. ⁸ His heart is sustained; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his enemies.

⁶ Then I would not be ashamed when I look to all your commands. ⁷ I will give you thanks with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous laws.

²⁶ In the fear of Yahweh, there is confidence of strength, and for his children, there will be refuge.

¹ The wicked flee, but no one pursues, but the righteous is bold like a lion.

¹² For our reason for boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, in holiness* and purity of motive from God, not* in merely human wisdom, but by the grace of God.

⁸ Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and dispute.

²⁸ And now, little children, remain in him, so that whenever he is revealed we may have confidence and not be put to shame before him at his coming.

¹⁹ By this* we know that we are of the truth and will convince our heart before him, ²⁰ that* if our heart condemns us, that God is greater than our heart and knows all things. ²¹ Dear friends, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God, ²² and whatever we ask we receive from him, because we keep his commandments and do what is pleasing _⌊in his sight_⌋*.

¹¹ I am establishing my covenant with you, that never again will all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, nor will there ever be a flood that destroys the earth."

⁵¹ And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, for he said, "God has caused me to forget all my hardship and all my father's house."

¹⁵ My companions are treacherous like a torrent-bed; like a streambed of wadis* they flow away,

¹¹ or it is so dark you cannot see, and a flood of water covers you.

⁷ He will drink and forget his poverty, and his misery he will not remember any more.

²⁰ For he does not remember the brief days of his life, for God keeps his heart preoccupied with enjoyment of life.

¹ And you will say on that day, "I will give you thanks, Yahweh, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, and you comforted me. ² Look! God is my salvation; I will trust, and I will not be afraid, for my strength and might is Yah, Yahweh; and he has become salvation for me."

⁴ You must not fear, for you will not be ashamed, and you must not be confounded, for you will not feel abashed, for you will forget the shame of your youth, and you will no longer remember the disgrace of your widowhood.

⁹ "For this is like the waters of Noah to me, when I swore _⌊that the waters of Noah would never again pass_⌋* over the earth, so I swore _⌊that I would not be_⌋* angry at you and rebuke you.

¹⁶ Whoever blesses himself in the land shall bless himself by the God of trustworthiness, and the one who swears an oath in the land shall swear by the God of trustworthiness, because the former troubles are forgotten, and they are hidden from my eyes.

²¹ A woman, when she gives birth, experiences pain because her hour has come. But when her* child is born, she no longer remembers the affliction, on account of the joy that a human being has been born into the world.

¹⁴ And I said to him, "My lord, you know." And he said to me,
"These are the ones who have come out of the great tribulation, and have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. ¹⁵ Because of this, they are before the throne of God, and they serve* him day and night in his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne _⌊will shelter_⌋* them. ¹⁶ They will not be hungry any longer or be thirsty any longer, nor will the sun ever beat down on them, nor any heat,* ¹⁷ because the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and will lead them to springs of living waters, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."*

¹⁰ Then David blessed Yahweh in the sight of all the assembly, and David said, "Blessed are you, O Yahweh, God of Israel, our father forever and ever!

¹¹ So* all his brothers and all his sisters and all those who had known him _⌊before_⌋* came to him, and they ate bread* with him in his house and showed sympathy to him and comforted him for all the disaster* that Yahweh had brought upon him. Then* each one gave to him one piece of money, and each one gave to him one ornamental ring of gold. ¹² So* Yahweh blessed Job's latter days more than his beginning. _⌊Thus he had_⌋* fourteen thousand sheep and goats and six thousand camels and a thousand pair of oxen and a thousand female donkeys. ¹³ _⌊And he had_⌋* seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴ And he called the name of the first Jemimah and the name of the second Keziah and the name of the third Qeren-Happuk. ¹⁵ And beautiful women were not found in all the land like Job's daughters, and their father gave to them an inheritance in the midst of their brothers. ¹⁶ And Job lived after this one hundred and forty years, and he saw his sons and his _⌊grandsons_⌋* for four generations. ¹⁷ Then* Job died old and full of days.

⁶ Then he will bring forth your righteousness like the light, and your justice like the noonday.

¹⁴ They will still prosper in old age. They will be fat and luxuriant,*

⁴ His light rises in the darkness for the upright; he is gracious and compassionate and righteous.

¹⁸ But the path of the righteous ones is like the light of dawn, leading and shining until the day _⌊is full_⌋.*

⁸ Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall grow quickly. And your salvation shall go before you; the glory of Yahweh will be your rear guard. ⁹ Then you shall call, and Yahweh himself will answer. You shall cry for help, and he will say, 'Here I am!' If you remove from among you the yoke, the _⌊finger-pointing_⌋* and _⌊evil speech_⌋,* ¹⁰ if* you offer your soul to the hungry, and you satisfy the appetite of the afflicted, then* your light shall rise in the darkness, and your darkness will be like noon.

³ Let us know, let us press on to know Yahweh; his rising is sure like the dawn. He will come like the showers to us, like the spring rain that waters the earth.

⁸ You should not rejoice over me, O my enemy! When I fall I will stand up; when I sit in darkness Yahweh will be a light for me. ⁹ I will bear the rage of Yahweh, for I have sinned against him, until he pleads my cause and executes my justice. He will bring me out to the light; I will see his righteousness.

⁶ _⌊And then_⌋* on that day there will not be light,* the precious things will congeal.* ⁷ There shall be continuous day—it is known to Yahweh—not day and not night; and at evening time there will be light.

² But for you who revere* my name, the sun of righteousness will rise, with healing in its wings, and you will go out and leap like _⌊fattened calves_⌋.*

²⁶ And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he would see the Lord's Christ.* ²⁷ And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus so that they could do for him according to what was customary under the law, ²⁸ he took him in his* arms and praised God and said, ²⁹ "Now dismiss your slave in peace, Lord, according to your word. ³⁰ For my eyes have seen your salvation ³¹ that you have prepared in the presence of all the peoples, ³² a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory to your people Israel."

⁵ And for you the threshing season shall overtake the grape harvest, and the grape harvest shall overtake the sowing, and you shall eat your food _⌊to your fill_⌋* and you shall live _⌊securely_⌋* in your land. ⁶ And I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and there shall not be _⌊anybody who makes you afraid_⌋,* and I will remove harmful animals from the land, and _⌊no sword shall pass through your land_⌋.*

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should wait? And what is my end, that _⌊I should hold out_⌋?*

⁶ "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and they come to an end _⌊without hope_⌋.*

²⁷ You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will pay your vows. ²⁸ And you will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you, and light will shine on your ways. ²⁹ When they are humiliated, _⌊you say_⌋,* 'It is pride,' for* he saves _⌊the humble_⌋.*

⁵ I lay down and slept; I woke up because Yahweh sustains me.

⁸ In peace I will lie down and sleep _⌊at once_⌋,* for you alone, O Yahweh, make me dwell safely.

⁵ Why are you _⌊in despair_⌋,* O my soul? And why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God, because I will again praise him, _⌊my salvation_⌋* and my God.

²⁴ If you sit down, you will not panic,* and if you lie down, then your sleep shall be sweet. ²⁵ Do not be afraid of sudden panic,* or the storm of wickedness that will come. ²⁶ Yahweh will be _⌊your confidence_⌋* and guard your foot from capture.

³² By his evildoing, the wicked will be overthrown, and the righteous will find refuge in his death.

³ And not only this, but we also boast in our afflictions, because we* know that affliction produces patient endurance, ⁴ and patient endurance, proven character, and proven character, hope, ⁵ and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

²⁷ to whom God wanted to make known what is the glorious wealth of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory,

²⁶ Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar with Ahuzzath his friend and Phicol his army commander. ²⁷ And Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me? And they left him in peace.

⁶ And I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and there shall not be _⌊anybody who makes you afraid_⌋,* and I will remove harmful animals from the land, and _⌊no sword shall pass through your land_⌋.*

⁸ _⌊So then_⌋,* take for yourselves seven bulls and seven rams, and go to my servant Job and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job will pray for you,* for _⌊I will certainly accept his prayer_⌋,* so that it will not be done with you* according to your folly, for you* have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has." ⁹ So* Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did just as Yahweh had told them, and _⌊Yahweh accepted Job's prayer_⌋.*

¹² Even the daughter of Tyre will come with a gift. The rich from among people will seek your _⌊favor_⌋.*

⁶ Many will seek favor before the generous, and everyone is the friend of a man of gifts.*

¹⁴ Thus says Yahweh: "The acquisition of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush and the Sabeans, tall men, shall pass over to you; they shall be yours, and they shall walk behind you. They shall pass over in chains, and they shall bow down to you; they will pray to you: 'Surely God is with you, and there is no other. Besides him there is no God.'"

¹⁴ And the children of those who oppressed you shall come to you bending low, and all those who treated you disrespectfully shall bow down at the soles of your feet. And they shall call you the city of Yahweh, Zion of the holy one of Israel.

⁹ Behold, I am causing those of the synagogue of Satan, the ones who call themselves Jews and are not, but are lying—behold, I will make them _⌊come_⌋* and kneel down before your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you.

¹⁶ I _⌊in turn_⌋* will do this to you: then* I will summon onto you horror, the wasting disease, and the fever that wastes eyes and that drains away life; and you shall sow your seed _⌊in vain_⌋,* and your enemies shall eat it.

⁶⁵ And among these nations you shall not find rest, and there shall not be a resting place for the sole of your foot, and Yahweh shall give you there an anxious heart and a weakening of eyes* and a languishing of your inner self.*

¹³ So are the paths of all who forget God; and the hope of the godless will perish, ¹⁴ whose confidence is cut off and _⌊whose trust_⌋* is a spider's house.

⁵ He denounces friends for reward, so* his children's eyes will fail.

¹⁴ He is torn from his tent _⌊in which he trusted_⌋,* and it brought him to the king of terrors.

⁸ for what is the hope of the godless when he cuts them off, when God takes away his life?

²² And it hurls at him, and it has no compassion; he will quickly flee from its power.

¹⁶ "If I have withheld the desire of the poor from them, or* I have caused the widow's eyes to fail,

²² There is no darkness, and there is no deep shadow where instigators of mischief might hide themselves.

³ I am weary with my calling out; my throat is parched. My eyes are exhausted in my waiting for my God.

²⁴ The dread of the wicked will come upon him, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.

²⁰ He who curses his father and his mother, his lamp will be extinguished _⌊in the midst of darkness_⌋.*

¹⁷ Still our eyes failed, looking for our help in vain; in our watchtower, we kept watch for a nation that could not save.

¹⁴ Flight will perish from the swift and the strong person will not muster his strength and the warrior will not save his life.

¹⁹ It will be as if a man fled from a lion and a bear met him; or he went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall and a snake bit him. ²⁰ Is not the day of Yahweh darkness and not light, and pitch dark with no brightness in it?

¹ I saw my Lord standing by the altar and he said, "Strike the capitals so that the thresholds will shake, and shatter them on the head of all of them, and I will kill the rest of them with the sword. A fugitive belonging to them will not run away, and a survivor belonging to them will not escape. ² If they dig into Sheol, from there my hand will take them, and even if they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down. ³ And even if they hide themselves on the top of Carmel, from there I will search and will take them, and even if they hide from before my eyes at the bottom of the sea, from there I will command the sea serpent and it will bite them.

²³ And in Hades he lifted up his eyes as he* was in torment and* saw Abraham from a distance, and Lazarus _⌊at his side_⌋.* ²⁴ And he called out and* said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he could dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am suffering pain in this flame!' ²⁵ But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that you received your good things during your life, and Lazarus likewise bad things. But now he is comforted here, but you are suffering pain. ²⁶ And in addition to all these things, a great chasm has been established between us and you, so that those who want to cross over from here to you are not able to do so,* nor can they cross over from there to us.'

³ how will we escape if we* neglect so great a salvation which had its beginning when it* was spoken through the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard,
