¹⁵ If this is how you are going to treat me, please kill me immediately if I find favor in your eyes, and do not let me see my misery."

⁴ Then he went into the wilderness one day's journey, and he went and sat under a certain broom tree. Then _⌊he asked Yahweh that he might die_⌋,* and he said, "It is enough now, Yahweh; take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors."*

²⁰ "Why does he* give light to one in misery and life to those bitter of soul, ²¹ who wait for death, but* _⌊it does not come_⌋,* and search* for it more than for treasures, ²² who rejoice _⌊exceedingly_⌋,* and they are glad when they find the grave? ²³ Why does he* give light to a man whose way is hidden, and God has fenced him in all around?

¹⁵ And* he saves from the sword of* their mouth, _⌊even_⌋* the poor from the hand of the strong. ¹⁶ So* there is hope* for the powerless, and wickedness shuts its mouth.

²⁰ In famine he will redeem you from death, and in war from the _⌊power of_⌋* the sword.

² "If only my vexation could be well weighed, and my calamity could be lifted up together with it in the balances, ³ for then it would be heavier than the sand of the seas; therefore my words have been rash, ⁴ for the arrows of Shaddai are in me; my spirit drinks their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.

⁸ "_⌊O that_⌋* my request may come, and that God may grant my hope, ⁹ that* God would decide that* he would crush me, that he would let loose his hand and _⌊kill me_⌋.*

²⁶ Do you intend to reprove my words* and consider the words of a desperate man as wind?

¹⁵ If I am guilty, woe to me! But* if I am righteous, I dare not lift my head; I am filled with shame, and just look at my misery! ¹⁶ And if my head grows bold, you would hunt me as the lion in its prime; _⌊and you repeat your exploits against me_⌋.*

⁶ If I speak, my pain is not relieved; and if I cease, how much will leave me? ⁷ "Surely now he has worn me out; you* have devastated all my company. ⁸ Thus* you shriveled me up;* it became a witness. And my leanness has risen up against me; it testifies to my face. ⁹ His wrath has torn, and he has been hostile toward me; he gnashed at me with his teeth. My foe sharpens his eyes against me. ¹⁰ They gaped at me with their mouth; they struck my cheeks with disgrace; they have massed themselves together against me. ¹¹ God delivers me to an evil one, and he casts me into the hands of the wicked. ¹² "I was at ease, then* he broke me in two, and he seized me by my neck; then* he shattered me and set me up as a target for him. ¹³ His archers surround me; he slashes open my kidneys, and he does not have compassion; he pours out my gall on the ground. ¹⁴ He breached me _⌊breach upon breach_⌋;* he rushes at me like a warrior. ¹⁵ "I have sewed sackcloth on my skin, and I have inserted _⌊my pride_⌋* in the dust. ¹⁶ My face is red because of weeping, and deep shadows are on my eyelids,

² "Listen carefully to my words, and let this be your* consolation. ³ Bear with me, and I myself* will speak; then* after my speaking you can mock. ⁴ As for me, is my complaint for human beings? And if so, why cannot I be impatient?

³ When I kept silent, my bones were worn out due to my groaning all the day. ⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy upon me. My vigor was changed into the dry heat of summer. Selah ⁵ I made known my sin to you, and my iniquity I did not cover. I said, "I will confess concerning my transgressions to Yahweh," and you took away the guilt of my sin. Selah

¹⁵ What can I say? For* he has spoken to me, and he himself has done it. I will walk slowly all my years because of the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁷ Look! Bitterness was bitter to me for peace. And you were the one who loved* my life from the pit of destruction, for you have cast all my sins behind your back.

³ And so then, Yahweh, please take my life from me, because for me death is better than life!"

⁸ _⌊And when the sun rose_⌋,* God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah's head and he grew faint. _⌊And he asked that he could die_⌋* and said, "My death is better than my life!"

⁵ If you yourself* would seek God, then* you would plead to Shaddai for grace. ⁶ If you are pure and upright, indeed,* now he will rouse himself for you, and he will restore your righteous abode.

²⁹ If I shall be declared guilty, why then should I labor in vain?

³¹ "Indeed, does anyone say to God, 'I have endured chastisement; I will not act corruptly again; ³² teach me yourself _⌊what I cannot see_⌋;* if I have done wrong, I will not repeat it'?

O Yahweh, do not rebuke me in your anger, and do not discipline me in your wrath. ² Be gracious to me, O Yahweh, because I am feeble. Heal me, O Yahweh, for my bones are terrified. ³ My soul is also very terrified. But you, O Yahweh, how long? ⁴ Turn, O Yahweh; deliver my life.* Save me for the sake of your steadfast love.*

O Yahweh, do not rebuke me in your anger or chastise me in your wrath. ² For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has pressed down on me. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation. There is no health in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For my iniquities have passed over my head; like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds start to stink; they rot because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am bowed down; I am bent over greatly. ²¹ But you, O Yahweh my Lord, deal with me for your name's sake. Because your loyal love is good, deliver me,

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. ²⁴ And see if there is in me _⌊the worship of false gods_⌋,* and lead me in the way everlasting.

² And do not enter into judgment with your servant, because no one alive is righteous before you.

⁴⁰ Let us test and examine our ways; let us return to Yahweh. ⁴¹ Let us lift up our hearts with our hands to God in the heavens. ⁴² We ourselves have transgressed and rebelled, you have not forgiven.

¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned! ¹⁷ Because of this, our heart has become faint, because of these, our eyes have become dim.

¹ Consequently, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

³¹ But if we were evaluating ourselves, we would not be judged. ³² But if we* are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined, in order that we will not be condemned with the world.

²⁰ "Look, God will not reject the blameless, and he will not uphold the hand of evildoers.

²² It is all one; therefore I say, 'He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.'

²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covers the face of its judge— if it is not he, then who is it?

¹⁵ You would call, and I myself* would answer you; you would long for the work of your hand.

¹⁶ Look, their prosperity is not in their hands; the schemes of the wicked are repugnant* to me.

¹⁸ Yet* he himself* filled up their houses with good things, but* the schemes of the wicked are repugnant to me.

⁵ for Job has said, 'I am righteous, but God has taken away my justice. ⁶ Should I lie concerning my justice? Though I am without transgression, my wound caused by an arrow is incurable.' ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water?

¹⁸ the one who says to a king, 'You worthless man,' to noblemen, 'You wicked man,' ¹⁹ who _⌊shows no partiality to officials_⌋* and who _⌊does not take note of the noble more than of the insignificant_⌋,* for all of them are the work of his hands?

⁷ He does not withdraw his eyes from the righteous, but* he sets them forever with kings on the throne, and they are exalted. ⁸ "And if they are tied up with fetters, if they are caught in the cords of misery, ⁹ then* he declares their work to them, and their transgressions, that they are behaving arrogantly.

¹⁷ But* you are obsessed with the judgment of the wicked; judgment and justice take hold of you. ¹⁸ Yes,* it is wrath, so that it will not incite you into mockery; and do not let the ransom's greatness turn you aside.

² "Shall a faultfinder contend with Shaddai? Anyone who argues with God must answer it."

⁸ "Indeed, would you annul my justice? Would you condemn me, so that you might be righteous?

³³ because Yahweh hears the needy and does not despise his own who are prisoners.

⁸ Yahweh accomplishes things for my benefit. O Yahweh, your loyal love endures forever; do not abandon the works of your hands.

⁸ Yet now Yahweh, you are our father; we are the clay and you are our _⌊potter_⌋,* and we all are the work of your hand.

¹ You will be in the right, O Yahweh, when I complain to you. Even so, let me speak my claims with you. Why does the way of the wicked succeed? All those who deal treacherously with treachery are at ease. ² Not only do you plant them, they take root. They grow, but also they produce fruit. You are near in their mouths, but far from their _⌊inmost beings_⌋.* ³ But you, O Yahweh, you know me, you see me, and you test that my heart is with you. Tear them apart like sheep for the slaughtering, and set them apart for the day of slaughter.

² He has driven me along, he brought darkness and not light. ³ Surely he has turned his hand against me, all day long. ⁴ He has worn out my flesh and skin, he has broken my bones. ⁵ _⌊He has besieged_⌋* and engulfed me with bitterness and hardship. ⁶ In darkness he has let me dwell like the dead of long ago. ⁷ He has built a wall around me, I cannot go out; he has made my bronze fetters heavy. ⁸ Though I cry out for help, he shuts out my prayers. ⁹ He has blocked my ways with dressed stones; he has made my paths crooked. ¹⁰ To me he is like a bear lying in wait, a lion in hiding. ¹¹ He has forsaken my way and torn me to pieces; he has caused me desolation. ¹² He has bent his bow and set me as the target for the arrow. ¹³ He shot _⌊the arrows of his quiver_⌋* into my kidneys. ¹⁴ I have become a laughingstock for all the people, their mocking song all day long. ¹⁵ He has filled me with bitterness, he has drenched me with wormwood. ¹⁶ He has broken my teeth on grit, he has trampled me down in ash. ¹⁷ My life has been removed from peace, I have forgotten goodness. ¹⁸ And I have said, "My glory is ruined, my expectation from Yahweh."

¹⁹ So then also those who suffer according to the will of God must entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing good.

⁷ But Yahweh said to Samuel, "Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For God does not see what man sees, for a man _⌊looks on the outward appearance_⌋,* but Yahweh _⌊looks on the heart_⌋."*

³² "For* he is not a mortal like me that I can answer him, that _⌊we can come to trial together_⌋.*

¹⁵ And he said to them, "You are the ones who justify themselves in the sight of men, but God knows your hearts! For what is considered exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

¹⁴ and his head and hair were white like wool, white as snow, and his eyes were like a fiery flame,

²⁶ "Look, God is exalted, and we do not know him; the number of his years is unsearchable.

² Before the mountains were born and you brought forth the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God. ³ You return man to the dust, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Return, O sons of man." ⁴ For a thousand years in your eyes are like yesterday when it passes, or like a watch in the night.

¹² But you, O Yahweh, abide* forever, and your remembrance* _⌊from generation to generation_⌋.*

²⁴ I say, "My God, do not carry me off from my life in the middle of my days." Your years continue throughout all generations. ²⁵ Long ago you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. ²⁶ They will perish, but you will endure. And like a garment they will all wear out, you will replace them like clothing, and they will be set aside. ²⁷ But you are the same, and your years do not end.

¹² and like a robe you will roll them up, and like a garment they will be changed; but you are the same, and your years will not run out."*

⁸ Now, dear friends, do not let this one thing escape your notice, that one day with the Lord is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day.

¹⁴ If I had sinned, then* you would be watching me, and you would not acquit me of my guilt. ¹⁵ If I am guilty, woe to me! But* if I am righteous, I dare not lift my head; I am filled with shame, and just look at my misery! ¹⁶ And if my head grows bold, you would hunt me as the lion in its prime; _⌊and you repeat your exploits against me_⌋.* ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and you increase your vexation against me; _⌊relief forces_⌋* are against me.

¹⁶ For then* you would count my steps, but you would not keep watch over my sin.

¹⁵ Break the arm of the wicked, and as for the evil man— seek out his wickedness until you find none.

²¹ would not God discover this, for he knows the secrets of the heart?

³⁴ Also on your skirts is found the blood of the life of the innocent, the poor. You did not find them in the act of breaking into a house. But in spite of all these things,

¹² And it shall be that at that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men _⌊whose senses are dulled from drinking_⌋,* who say in their hearts, 'Yahweh will not do good, nor will he do evil.'

²⁴ But Jesus himself did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people,* ²⁵ and because he did not _⌊need_⌋* anyone _⌊to testify_⌋* about man, for he himself knew what was in man.*

⁵ Therefore do not judge anything before the time, until the Lord should come, who will both enlighten the hidden things of darkness and will reveal the counsels of hearts, and then praise will come to each one from God.

³⁹ See, now, that I, even I am he, and there is not a god besides me; I put to death and I give life; I wound and I heal; there is not one who delivers from my hand!

¹⁰ But he knows _⌊the way that I take_⌋;* he tests me—I shall come out like gold.

¹³ "But* he is _⌊alone_⌋,* and who can dissuade him? And _⌊whatever he desires_⌋,* _⌊indeed_⌋,* he does it. ¹⁴ For he will carry out _⌊what he appoints for me_⌋,* and many things like these are with him.

⁶ let him weigh me in the balance of justice, and let God know my blamelessness.

¹⁴ then* what shall I do when God rises up? And when he enquires, how shall I answer him?

³⁵ _⌊O that_⌋* _⌊I had_⌋* someone hearing me! Here is my signature; let Shaddai answer me! _⌊As for_⌋* the written communication that _⌊my adversary_⌋* has written,

⁷ _⌊And then_⌋* after Yahweh spoke these words to Job, Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "_⌊My wrath has been kindled_⌋* against you* and against the two of your friends, for you* have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has.

⁶ for Yahweh knows the way of the righteous,* but the way of the wicked will perish.

³ O Yahweh, my God, if I have done this, if there is wrong in my hands,

⁸ Yahweh judges the nations. O Yahweh, vindicate me according to my innocence* and according to my integrity within me. ⁹ Let the evil of the wicked come to an end, but establish the righteous, and test the hearts and innermost being, O righteous God.

³ You have tried my heart; you have examined me by night; you have tested me; you found nothing. I have decided that my mouth will not transgress.

Judge me, O Yahweh, because I have walked in my integrity, and I have trusted Yahweh and not wavered. ² Prove me, O Yahweh, and test me. Try my _⌊innermost being_⌋* and my _⌊mind_⌋.* ³ Because your loyal love is before my eyes, and I walk about in your faithfulness. ⁴ I do not sit with deceitful people, nor will I go about with hypocrites. ⁵ I hate the crowd of evildoers, and with the wicked I will not sit.

²² Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you apart, and there will be none to deliver.

O Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me. ² You know my sitting down and my rising up. You understand my thought from afar.

²¹ Do I not hate those who hate you, O Yahweh? And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? ²² I hate them with a complete hatred; they have become my enemies.

¹⁵ Now if you are ready so that _⌊when_⌋* you hear the sound of the horn, the flute, the lyre, the trigon, the harp and the drum and all kinds of music, you fall down and you worship the statue that I have made, that will be good. But if you do not worship it, _⌊immediately_⌋* you will be thrown into the midst of the furnace of blazing fire, and _⌊who is the god_⌋* who* will rescue you from my hands?"

¹⁰ And now I will uncover her nakedness before the eyes of her lovers, and no one will rescue her from my hand.

²⁸ And I give them eternal life, and they will never perish _⌊forever_⌋,* and no one will seize them out of my hand. ²⁹ My Father, who has given them* to me, is greater than all, and no one can seize them* from the Father's hand. ³⁰ The Father and I are one."

¹⁷ He said to him a third time, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed because he said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything! You know that I love you!" Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep!

¹² For our reason for boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, in holiness* and purity of motive from God, not* in merely human wisdom, but by the grace of God.

¹⁰ You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and righteously and blamelessly we became to you who believe,

⁶ And Yahweh regretted that he had made humankind on the earth, and _⌊he was grieved in his heart_⌋.* ⁷ And Yahweh said, "I will destroy humankind whom I created from upon the face of the earth, from humankind, to animals, to creeping things, and to the birds of heaven,* for I regret that I have made them."

³ Is it good for you that you oppress, that you despise the labor of your hands, and you smile over the schemes of the wicked?

⁷³ Your hands have made me and established me; give me understanding that I may learn your commands.

⁷ everyone who is called by my name, and whom I created for my glory, whom I formed, indeed whom I made."

³ So I went down to the house of the potter and look, there he was doing work at the potter's wheels. ⁴ And the vessel that he was making with the clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter, so _⌊he made again_⌋* another vessel, as it was right in the eyes of the potter to make. ⁵ And the word of Yahweh came to me, _⌊saying_⌋,* ⁶ "Like this potter, am I not able to do to you, O house of Israel?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "Look, like the clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. ⁷ One moment I speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom, to uproot, and to tear down, and to destroy it.* ⁸ But if that nation turns back from its evil that I have threatened against it, then I will relent concerning the disaster that I planned to do to it. ⁹ And the next moment I speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom, to build, and to plant it.* ¹⁰ But if it does evil in my sight, to not listen to my voice, then I will relent concerning the good that I said I would do to it.

⁷ when* Yahweh God formed the man* of dust from the ground, and he blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

¹⁹ By the sweat of your brow* you shall eat bread, until your return to the ground. For from it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

⁷ Remember that my life is a breath; my eye will not return to see good.

¹⁴ if I call to the pit, 'You are my father,' to the maggot, 'You are my mother or* my sister,'

¹⁵ My strength is dry like a potsherd, and my tongue is sticking to my jaws; and you have placed me in the dust of death.

⁶ Remember your compassion, O Yahweh, and your acts of loyal love, because they are from of old. ⁷ Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions. According to your loyal love remember me if you will, for the sake of your goodness, O Yahweh.

¹⁸ Consider my affliction and trouble, and forgive* all my sins.

⁴⁷ Remember what my lifespan is. Remember for what vanity you have created all the children of humankind.

³ You return man to the dust, _⌊saying_⌋,* "Return, O sons of man."

⁴ Remember me, O Yahweh, when you show favor to your people. Look after me when you deliver,

⁷ And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the breath returns to God who gave it.

⁹ Woe to the one who strives with his _⌊maker_⌋,* a potsherd among* potsherds of earth! Does the clay say to the one who fashions it, 'What are you making?' and 'Your work has no hands'?

⁶ "Like this potter, am I not able to do to you, O house of Israel?" _⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh. "Look, like the clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.

²¹ Or does the potter not have authority over the clay, to make from the same lump a vessel that is for _⌊honorable use_⌋* and one that is for _⌊ordinary use_⌋*?

¹⁴ I praise you, because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.* Wonderful are your works, and my soul knows it well. ¹⁵ My _⌊frame_⌋* was not hidden from you, when I was created secretly,* and intricately woven in the depths of the earth. ¹⁶ Your eyes saw my embryo,* and in your book they all were written— days fashioned for me when there was not one of them.

¹⁷ It keeps its tail straight like a cedar; the sinews of its thighs are tightly wound. ¹⁸ Its bones are tubes of copper, its limbs like rods of iron.

⁴ And he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones, and you must say to them, to the dry bones, 'Hear the word of Yahweh! ⁵ Thus says the Lord Yahweh to these bones: "Look! I am bringing into you breath, and you will live! ⁶ And I will lay on you sinews, and I will let flesh come upon you, and I will cover you over with skin, and I will put breath into you, and you will live, and you will know that I am Yahweh." '" ⁷ And I prophesied _⌊just as_⌋* I had been commanded, and there was a sound at my prophesying, and look! A rattling, and they came together—the bones! Bone to its bone! ⁸ And I looked, and indeed, sinews were on them, and flesh went up,* and skin covered over* them _⌊upward_⌋,* but breath was not in them.

² For indeed, in this house we groan, because we* desire to put on our dwelling from heaven, ³ if indeed, even after we* have taken it off,* we will not be found naked.

¹⁶ from whom the whole body, joined together and held together by every supporting ligament, according to the working by measure of each single part, the growth of the body makes for the building up of itself in love.

¹⁹ Behold, your servant has found favor in your eyes and _⌊you have shown me great kindness_⌋* in saving my life. But I cannot flee to the mountains, lest the disaster overtake me and I die.

⁴ The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of Shaddai gives life to me.

²⁵ "For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, what you will eat,* and not for your body, what you will wear. Is your life not more than food and your body more than clothing?

²⁵ nor is he served by human hands as if he* needed anything, because* he himself gives to everyone life and breath and everything.

²⁸ for in him we live and move and exist,* as even some of _⌊your own_⌋* poets have said: 'For we also are _⌊his_⌋* offspring.'*

⁹ _⌊When he works_⌋* on the left, _⌊I cannot perceive_⌋* him; he turns to the right, but* I cannot see him.

¹³ "But* he is _⌊alone_⌋,* and who can dissuade him? And _⌊whatever he desires_⌋,* _⌊indeed_⌋,* he does it.

⁶ For there is a proper time and right procedure for every matter, even though the trouble of man weighs heavy upon him. ⁷ Surely no one knows what will be, so who can tell anyone what will happen?

⁷ I form light and I create darkness; I make peace and I create evil; I am Yahweh; I do all these things.

¹⁵ Surely you are a God who keeps yourself hidden, God of Israel, the savior.

⁹ Remember the former things from _⌊a long time ago_⌋,* for I am God and there is none besides me, God and there is none like me, ¹⁰ who from the beginning declares the end, and from before, things that have not been done, who says, 'My plan shall stand,' and, 'I will accomplish* all my wishes,'* ¹¹ who calls a bird of prey from the east, the man of his* plan from a country from afar. Indeed I have spoken; indeed I will bring it to being. I have formed it; indeed I will do it.

³⁷ _⌊Who can speak_⌋* and it will happen if the Lord has not commanded it?

³³ Oh, the depth of the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how incomprehensible are his ways!

¹¹ according to the purpose of the ages which he carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord,

⁷ keeping loyal love to the thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and he does not leave utterly unpunished, punishing the guilt of fathers on sons and on sons of sons on third and fourth generations."

¹⁸ 'Yahweh is _⌊slow to anger_⌋* and great of loyal love, _⌊forgiving_⌋* sin and rebellion; but surely he leaves nothing unpunished, visiting the sin of the fathers on the sons to the third and fourth generations.'

²¹ And why do you not pardon my transgression and take away my guilt? For now I shall lie in the dust, and you will seek me, but* _⌊I will be no more_⌋."*

²⁸ I become afraid of all my sufferings; I know that you do not consider me innocent.

²⁶ "Indeed, you* write bitter things against me, and you* make me reap the iniquities of my childhood. ²⁷ And you* put my feet in the block, and you* watch all my paths; you carve a mark on the soles of my feet.*

³ If you, O Yah,* should _⌊keep track of_⌋* iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?

O Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me.

⁷ And Yahweh said, "Surely I have seen the misery of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their cry of distress because of their oppressors, for I know their sufferings.

¹² _⌊If_⌋* he would snatch away, who could turn him? Who could say to him, 'What are you doing?'

¹⁵ whom I cannot answer, even though I am righteous? From* my judge I must implore grace.

²⁰ Even though I am righteous, my mouth will condemn me; even though I am blameless, yet* it would pronounce me guilty. ²¹ "I am blameless; I do not care about myself;* I loathe my life.

⁷ because of your knowledge that I am not guilty, and there is no escaping from your hand?

⁶ And when I think of it, I am horrified,* and shuddering seizes my flesh.

¹⁵ Therefore, I am horrified because of his presence; when I consider, I tremble* because of him.

⁷ "Let my enemy be like the wicked and my opponent like the unrighteous,

¹⁷ The wicked shall turn back to Sheol, all the nations forgetting God,

¹⁵³ See my misery and rescue me, for I do not forget your law.

¹¹ Woe to the wicked!* It is bad! For what is done by his hands will be done to him.

⁵ And I said, "Woe to me! For I am destroyed!* For I am a man _⌊of unclean lips_⌋,* and I am living among* a people _⌊of unclean lips_⌋,* for my eyes have seen the king, Yahweh of hosts!"

⁵ You meet with the one who rejoices, one who does righteousness. In your ways they remember you. Look! You were angry and we sinned against them in ancient times and we were saved. ⁶ And we all have become like the unclean, and all our deeds of justice like a menstrual cloth, And we all wither like a leaf, and our iniquities take us away like the wind.

²⁰ See, O Yahweh, that _⌊I am in distress_⌋;* _⌊my stomach_⌋* is in torment, my heart has turned inside me because I have certainly rebelled. From outside a sword brings bereavement, inside the house it is like death.

¹ Remember, O Yahweh, what has become of us; take note, and see our disgrace! ² Our inheritance has been turned over to strangers, our houses, to foreigners. ³ We have become orphans, fatherless, our mothers are like widows. ⁴ _⌊We pay for water with money_⌋,* our wood comes to us at a price. ⁵ We are driven on our necks; we are weary, there is no rest for us. ⁶ We have made a deal with Egypt and Assyria to be satisfied with food. ⁷ Our fathers have sinned, they are no more; we bear their iniquity. ⁸ Slaves rule over us; there is no one to deliver us from their hand. ⁹ _⌊We risk our life for food_⌋* because of the sword of the desert. ¹⁰ Our skin is hot like an oven because of the scorching famine. ¹¹ They raped women in Zion, young women* in the cities of Judah. ¹² They hang princes by their hand; they do not show respect before elders. ¹³ Young men must carry a hand-mill and boys stumble under the wood. ¹⁴ Elders are no longer at the gate, young men no longer play stringed instruments. ¹⁵ The joy of our hearts has stopped; our circle-dancing has changed to a mourning ceremony. ¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head; woe to us, for we have sinned! ¹⁷ Because of this, our heart has become faint, because of these, our eyes have become dim. ¹⁸ Because of Mount Zion, which lies desolate, _⌊foxes tread on it_⌋.* ¹⁹ You, O Yahweh, will sit forever on your throne for generation to generation. ²⁰ Why have you forgotten us forever? Why have you forsaken us _⌊for so long_⌋?* ²¹ Restore us to you, O Yahweh, that we will be restored; renew our days as of old. ²² Unless you have utterly rejected us, unless you are angry with us beyond measure.

¹⁸ You will return and see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not serve him.

¹⁰ Thus you also, when you have done all the _⌊things you were ordered to do_⌋,* say, 'We are unworthy slaves; we have done what we were obligated to do.'"

⁸ but to those who act from selfish ambition and who disobey the truth, but who obey unrighteousness, wrath and anger. ⁹ There will be affliction and distress for every _⌊human being_⌋* who does evil, of the Jew first and of the Greek,

²⁹ _⌊If they die a natural death_⌋* or _⌊if a natural fate is visited upon them_⌋,* Yahweh has not sent me. ³⁰ But if Yahweh creates something new, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up and _⌊all that belongs to them_⌋,* and they go down alive to Sheol, and you will know that these men have despised Yahweh."

⁵⁹ then Yahweh shall overwhelm you with your plagues and the plagues of your offspring, severe plagues and lasting illnesses, grievous and enduring.

⁹ He is doing great and _⌊unsearchable_⌋* things, marvelous things _⌊without number_⌋*—

¹³ I lie down* until morning; like a lion, so he breaks all my bones; from day to night you bring me to an end.

¹⁰ To me he is like a bear lying in wait, a lion in hiding.

⁷ And I will be like a lion to them; I lie in wait beside the way, like a leopard. ⁸ I will attack them like a bear robbed of her offspring, and I will tear open the covering of their heart; there I will devour them like a lion, like an animal of the field would mutilate them.

⁸ A lion has roared! Who is not afraid? My Lord Yahweh has spoken, who will not prophesy?

²¹ I went away full, but Yahweh brought me back empty-handed! Why call me Naomi _⌊when Yahweh has testified against me_⌋* and Shaddai* has brought calamity upon me?"

⁸ Thus* you shriveled me up;* it became a witness. And my leanness has risen up against me; it testifies to my face.

⁶ know then that God has wronged me and has surrounded me with his net. ⁷ "Look, I cry out, 'Violence!' but* I am not answered; I cry out, but* there is no justice. ⁸ He has walled up my way so that* I cannot pass; and he has set darkness upon my paths. ⁹ He has taken my glory from me, and he has removed the crown of* my head. ¹⁰ He has broken me down all around, and I am gone. And he has uprooted my hope like a tree, ¹¹ and he has kindled his wrath against me, and _⌊he has counted me as one of his foes_⌋.*

¹⁹ God will hear and answer them,* he who is enthroned from of old, Selah Because they do not change, and they do not fear God.

¹¹ Moab has been at ease from his youth, and he has been quiet on his dregs, and he has not been poured out from vessel to vessel, and he has not gone into exile. _⌊Therefore_⌋* his taste has remained unchanged, and his fragrance has not changed.

¹⁰ because it did not shut the doors of my mother's womb, nor* did it hide trouble from my eyes. ¹¹ "Why did I not die at* birth? Why did I not come forth from the womb and expire?

²⁰ But* the eyes of the wicked will fail; and refuge will be lost to them, and their hope is _⌊to breathe their last breath_⌋."*

¹⁰ "But* a man dies, and he dwindles away; thus* a human being passes away, and where is he?*

¹⁰ Woe to me, O my mother, that you gave birth to me, a man of contention and quarreling _⌊to the whole land_⌋.* I have not lent out and _⌊I have not borrowed_⌋.* All of them are cursing me.

¹⁴ Cursed be the day on which I was born, let not the day on which my mother gave birth to me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father, _⌊saying_⌋,* "A child is born to you, a son!" and he made him very glad. ¹⁶ And let that man be like the cities that Yahweh demolished without regret, and let him hear a cry for help in the morning, and an alarm at the time of noon. ¹⁷ Because he did not kill me in the womb, so that my mother would have been for me my grave, and her womb would be pregnant forever. ¹⁸ _⌊Why_⌋* did I come out from the womb, to see toil, and sorrow, and to _⌊end my days in shame_⌋?*

²⁴ The Son of Man is going just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for him if that man had not been born."

⁸ Let them be like a snail that melts away as it goes; like the stillborn of woman that do not see the sun.

⁶ "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and they come to an end _⌊without hope_⌋.* ⁷ Remember that my life is a breath; my eye will not return to see good.

¹⁶ I loathe my life; I would not live forever; depart from me, for my days are a breath. ¹⁷ "What is a human being that you make him great and that _⌊you fix your mind on him_⌋,* ¹⁸ so that* you visit him _⌊every morning_⌋,* you test him _⌊every moment_⌋?* ¹⁹ _⌊How long_⌋* will you not turn away from me? Or not leave me alone until I swallow* my spit? ²⁰ If I have sinned, what have I done to you, watcher of humanity? Why have you made me as a target for yourself, so that* I have become a burden to myself?* ²¹ And why do you not pardon my transgression and take away my guilt? For now I shall lie in the dust, and you will seek me, but* _⌊I will be no more_⌋."*

⁹ for we are of yesterday, and we do not know, for our days on earth are a shadow.

²⁵ "And my days are swifter than a runner; they flee away; they do not see good. ²⁶ They go by like papyrus skiffs, like an eagle swoops down on its prey.

²¹ withdraw your* hand from me, and let not your* dread terrify me.

¹ "A human being born of a woman is short of days and full of troubles.*

⁵ Look, you have made my days mere handbreadths, and my lifespan as nothing next to you. Surely every person standing firm is complete vanity. Selah

¹³ Look away from me that I may be cheerful, before I depart and I am no more.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are like the grass. As the flower of the field, so he blossoms. ¹⁶ When the wind passes over it, it is no more, and its place knows it no longer.

²³ But now he is dead. Why should I be fasting? Am I able to return him again? I am going to him, but he cannot return to me."

¹⁴ For _⌊we must certainly die_⌋,* and we are as the waters spilled to the ground which cannot be gathered. God will not take a life but devises plans for a banished person not to be cast out from him.

⁵ Let darkness and deep shadow claim it; let clouds* settle on it; let them* terrify it with the blackness* of day.

¹³ For now I would lie down, and I would be at peace; I would be asleep; then _⌊I would be at rest_⌋*

⁸ The eye of the one seeing me will not see me; your eyes are upon me, but* _⌊I will be gone_⌋.* ⁹ A cloud vanishes, and it goes away, so he who goes down to Sheol will not come up. ¹⁰ He does not return again to his house, and his place does not recognize him again.

¹⁰ "But* a man dies, and he dwindles away; thus* a human being passes away, and where is he?* ¹¹ As water disappears from a lake, and a river withers away and dries up,* ¹² _⌊so_⌋* a man lies down, and he does not arise. _⌊Until the heavens are no more_⌋,* they will not awaken, and they will not be roused out of their sleep. ¹³ "_⌊O that_⌋* you would conceal me in Sheol, that you would hide me _⌊until your wrath is past_⌋,* that you would appoint a set time for me and remember me. ¹⁴ If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my compulsory service I will wait, until the coming of my relief.

²² Indeed, after _⌊a few years_⌋* have come, then* I will go the way from which I will not return.

⁴ Even when I walk in a dark valley, I fear no evil because you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

⁶ You have set me in the pit below, in dark places, in the depths.

¹¹ Is your loyal love told in the grave, or your faithfulness in the underworld?* ¹² Are your wonders* known in the darkness, or your righteousness* in the land of forgetfulness?

¹¹ I said, "I shall not see Yah! Yah in the land of the living! I shall no more look at humankind among the inhabitants of the world.

⁶ And they did not say, 'Where is Yahweh, the one who brought us up from the land of Egypt, the one who led us in the desert,* in a land of desert plains and gorges,* in a land of dryness and deep darkness, in a land _⌊that no one passes through_⌋,* and no human lives there?'

²² There is no darkness, and there is no deep shadow where instigators of mischief might hide themselves.

¹⁷ Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the gates of deep shadow?

¹⁹ But you have crushed us in a place of jackals, and have covered us with deep shadow.

¹² Are your wonders* known in the darkness, or your righteousness* in the land of forgetfulness?

¹⁶ Give glory to Yahweh your God _⌊before_⌋* he brings darkness, and _⌊before_⌋* your feet stumble on the mountains at twilight. And you will hope for light, but he makes it as gloom, he makes it* as thick darkness.

²⁶ And in addition to all these things, a great chasm has been established between us and you, so that those who want to cross over from here to you are not able to do so,* nor can they cross over from there to us.'
