¹ But Job answered and said, ² Oh that my grief were thoroughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together! ³ For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up. ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison thereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me. ⁵ Does the wild donkey bray when it has grass? or the ox lows over its fodder? ⁶ Can that which is tasteless be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg? ⁷ The things that my soul refused to touch are as loathsome food to me. ⁸ Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for! ⁹ Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off! ¹⁰ Then should I still have comfort; yea, I would exult myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One. ¹¹ What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is my end, that I should prolong my life? ¹² Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of bronze? ¹³ Is not my help within me? and is wisdom driven quite from me? ¹⁴ To him that is afflicted pity should be shown from his friend; even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty. ¹⁵ My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks that pass away; ¹⁶ Which are black by reason of the ice, and in which the snow is hid: ¹⁷ At what time they become warm, they vanish: when it is hot, they vanish out of their place. ¹⁸ The paths of their way turn aside; they go nowhere, and perish. ¹⁹ The caravans of Tema looked, the travelers of Sheba waited for them. ²⁰ They were disappointed because they had confidence; they came there, and were confused. ²¹ For now you are nothing; you see my terror, and are afraid. ²² Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your substance? ²³ Or, Deliver me from the enemy’s hand? or, Redeem me from the hand of the mighty? ²⁴ Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand how I have erred. ²⁵ How forceful are right words! but what does your arguing prove? ²⁶ Do you intend to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind? ²⁷ Yea, you overwhelm the fatherless, and you dig a pit for your friend. ²⁸ Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie. ²⁹ Return, I pray you, let it not be injustice; yea, return again, my righteousness is in it. ³⁰ Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?

¹ Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

⁵ But now it is come upon you, and you faint; it touches you, and you are troubled.

² Even today is my complaint bitter: my hand is heavy in spite of my groaning.

⁶ Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity.

¹⁹ Teach us what we shall say unto him; for we cannot order our speech because of darkness. ²⁰ Shall it be told him that I speak? if a man speaks, surely he shall be swallowed up.

⁵ Many, O LORD my God, are your wonderful works which you have done, and your thoughts which are toward us: they cannot be recounted in order unto you: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

⁴ You hold my eyes from closing: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

³ A stone is heavy, and the sand weighty; but a fool's wrath is heavier than them both.

²⁸ Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

²³ I will heap evils upon them; I will spend my arrows upon them. ²⁴ They shall be wasted with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of animals upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.

⁴² I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives, from the heads of the leaders of the enemy.

¹⁷ For he breaks me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause.

¹² I was at ease, but he has broken me asunder: he has also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark. ¹³ His archers surround me, he slashes my kidneys asunder, and does not spare; he pours out my gall upon the ground. ¹⁴ He breaks me with breach upon breach, he runs upon me like a warrior.

²⁰ His eyes shall see his destruction, and he shall drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

¹⁵ Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my honor as the wind: and my welfare passes away as a cloud.

²³ For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his majesty I could not endure.

¹³ He has also prepared for himself the instruments of death; he makes ready his arrows against the persecutors.

¹⁴ Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and vanquished them.

¹² Therefore shall you make them turn their back, when you shall make ready your arrows upon your strings toward their face.

² For your arrows stick fast in me, and your hand presses me down.

⁵ Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the king's enemies; by which the people fall under you.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer your terrors I am distracted. ¹⁶ Your fierce anger goes over me; your terrors have cut me off.

⁷ Hear me speedily, O LORD: my spirit fails: hide not your face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.

¹⁴ The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness; but a wounded spirit who can bear?

¹² He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow. ¹³ He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my heart.

³³ And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed, and to be very troubled; ³⁴ And said unto them, My soul is exceedingly sorrowful unto death: tarry you here, and watch.

³⁴ And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

¹¹ Knowing therefore the fear of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A maschil, for the Sons of Korah.] As the hart pants after the water brooks, so pants my soul after you, O God.

¹⁴ He causes the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth;

⁶ And the wild donkeys did stand in the high places, they sniffed at the wind like jackals; their eyes did fail, because there was no grass.

¹⁸ How the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate. ¹⁹ O LORD, to you will I cry: for the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame has burned all the trees of the field. ²⁰ The beasts of the field cry also unto you: for the rivers of waters are dried up, and the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

¹³ And every offering of your grain offering shall you season with salt; neither shall you allow the salt of the covenant of your God to be lacking from your grain offering: with all your offerings you shall offer salt.

²⁵ How forceful are right words! but what does your arguing prove?

³⁰ Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things?

¹¹ Does not the ear test words? and the mouth taste its food?

² I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are you all.

³ For the ear tests words, as the mouth tastes food.

¹⁰³ How sweet are your words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

³⁴ Salt is good: but if the salt has lost its taste, how shall it be restored?

⁶ Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer every man.

⁴ For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, ⁵ And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come,

¹² And she said, As the LORD your God lives, I have not bread, but a handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a jar: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and prepare it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

²⁷ And say, Thus says the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of affliction, until I come in peace.

²⁴ For my sighing comes before I eat, and my groanings are poured out like the waters.

⁹ For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping,

¹⁴ Then said I, Ah Lord GOD! behold, my soul has not been polluted: for from my youth up even till now have I not eaten of that which dies of itself, or is torn in pieces; neither came there abominable flesh into my mouth.

¹⁶ Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, behold, I will cut off the supply of bread in Jerusalem: and they shall eat bread by weight, and with care; and they shall drink water by measure, and in dismay:

¹⁸ Son of man, eat your bread with quaking, and drink your water with trembling and with anxiety; ¹⁹ And say unto the people of the land, Thus says the Lord GOD of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and of the land of Israel; They shall eat their bread with anxiety, and drink their water with dismay, that their land may be emptied from all who are in it, because of the violence of all them that dwell in it.

³ I ate no pleasant food, neither came meat nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is my end, that I should prolong my life? ¹² Is my strength the strength of stones? or is my flesh of bronze? ¹³ Is not my help within me? and is wisdom driven quite from me?

¹⁴ I have said to corruption, You are my father: to the worm, You are my mother, and my sister. ¹⁵ And where is now my hope? as for my hope, who shall see it? ¹⁶ They shall go down to the gates of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.

⁸¹ [Kaph] My soul faints for your salvation: but I hope in your word.

¹⁴ I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me. ¹⁵ And if you deal thus with me, kill me, I pray you, out of hand, if I have found favor in your sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

⁴ But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

²⁰ Therefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; ²¹ Who long for death, but it comes not; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures; ²² Who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

¹⁵ So that my soul chooses strangling, and death rather than my life. ¹⁶ I loathe it; I would not live always: let me alone; for my days are vanity.

¹³ O that you would hide me in the grave, that you would conceal me, until your wrath is past, that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me!

²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O you my friends; for the hand of God has touched me.

⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy upon me: my strength is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

¹⁰ Behold, I have refined you, but not with silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. ¹¹ For my own sake, even for my own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be profaned? and I will not give my glory unto another. ¹² Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. ¹³ My hand also has laid the foundation of the earth, and my right hand has spread out the heavens: when I call unto them, they stand up together.

³ Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

⁸ And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, so that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

⁶ And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

² Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, You shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy.

²⁰ The LORD will not spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven.

² There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside you: neither is there any rock like our God.

²² Who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave?

⁴ He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who has hardened himself against him, and has prospered?

³³ The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall follow after him, as there are innumerable gone before him.

²² Receive, I pray you, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.

¹² Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.

³⁰ The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and his tongue talks of justice.

⁹ I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not restrained my lips, O LORD, you know. ¹⁰ I have not hid your righteousness within my heart; I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation: I have not concealed your lovingkindness and your truth from the great congregation.

¹⁷ O God, you have taught me from my youth: and to this day have I declared your wondrous works. ¹⁸ Now also when I am old and gray headed, O God, forsake me not; until I have showed your strength unto this generation, and your power to every one that is to come.

¹³ With my lips have I declared all the judgments of your mouth.

¹¹ Get out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us. ¹² Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel, Because you despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and rely on them:

¹⁵ For thus says the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

⁹ I will not execute the fierceness of my anger, I will not return to destroy Ephraim: for I am God, and not man; the Holy One in the midst of you: and I will not enter into the city.

¹² Are you not from everlasting, O LORD my God, my Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, you have ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, you have established them for correction.

³ God came from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise.

²⁰ And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you, but have showed you, and have taught you publicly, and from house to house,

²⁷ For I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God.

³² He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

⁴ For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; ⁵ And spared not the ancient world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

⁷ And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things says he that is holy, he that is true, he that has the key of David, he that opens, and no man shuts; and shuts, and no man opens;

⁸ And the four living creatures had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.

⁵ My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust; my skin is broken, and become loathsome. ⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope. ⁷ O remember that my life is a breath: my eye shall no more see good.

²⁰ Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,

²⁵ Will you break a leaf driven to and fro? and will you pursue the dry stubble?

²⁸ And he, like a rotten thing, consumes, as a garment that is moth-eaten.

¹ My breath is corrupt, my days are extinct, the grave is ready for me.

⁴ As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?

⁵ Behold, you have made my days as a handbreadth; and my age is as nothing before you: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

⁵ You carry them away as with a flood; they are like a sleep: in the morning they are like grass which grows up. ⁶ In the morning it flourishes, and grows up; in the evening it is cut down, and withers. ⁷ For we are consumed by your anger, and by your wrath are we troubled. ⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance. ⁹ For all our days are passed away in your wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. ¹⁰ The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

²³ He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days.

¹⁴ For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust. ¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourishes. ¹⁶ For the wind passes over it, and it is gone; and the place there shall know it no more.

¹⁸ His bones are as strong pieces of bronze; his bones are like bars of iron.

²⁴ His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the lower millstone.

² No doubt you are the people, and wisdom shall die with you. ³ But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yea, who knows not such things as these?

² What you know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior unto you.

²⁸ But you should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?

² How have you helped him that is without power? how save you the arm that has no strength?

¹² For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

⁴ But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.

¹¹ And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.

³ Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands. ⁴ Your words have upheld him that was falling, and you have strengthened the feeble knees. ⁵ But now it is come upon you, and you faint; it touches you, and you are troubled.

⁴ Yea, you cast off fear, and restrain prayer before God.

⁵ But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips would relieve your grief.

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David the servant of the LORD.] The transgression of the wicked says within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes. ² For he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity is found to be hateful. ³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he has ceased to be wise, and to do good.

¹⁷ A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

⁴⁰ But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Do you not fear God, seeing you are in the same condemnation?

¹⁵ Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

²⁶ And whether one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honored, all the members rejoice with it.

²⁹ Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?

² Bear you one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

³ Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them who suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.

¹⁹ All my close friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved have turned against me.

¹¹ My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my plague; and my kinsmen stand afar off.

⁹ Yea, my own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, who did eat of my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.

¹² For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: ¹³ But it was you, a man my equal, my guide, and my close friend. ¹⁴ We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.

¹⁸ Lover and friend have you put far from me, and my acquaintance into darkness.

⁴ Take you heed everyone of his neighbor, and trust you not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbor will walk with slanders. ⁵ And they will deceive everyone his neighbor, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity.

¹⁸ Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? will you be altogether unto me as a deceitful brook, and as waters that fail?

¹⁴ All your lovers have forgotten you; they seek you not; for I have wounded you with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the multitude of your iniquity; because your sins were increased.

⁵ Trust not in a friend, put not confidence in a companion: keep the doors of your mouth from her that lies in your bosom. ⁶ For the son dishonors the father, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; a man's enemies are the men of his own house.

¹⁸ I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.

³² Behold, the hour comes, yea, is now come, that you shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

¹² These are spots in your love feasts, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about by winds; trees whose fruit withers, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

¹ And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

¹⁹ Drought and heat consume the snow waters: so does the grave those who have sinned.

⁷ And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabteca: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.

³ And Jokshan begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and Letushim, and Leummim.

¹⁵ Hadad, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah:

¹ And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to test him with hard questions.

¹⁰ The kings of Tarshish and of the coasts shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.

¹⁴ The inhabitants of the land of Tema brought water to him that was thirsty, they met with their bread him that fled.

²³ Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the farthest corners,

²² The merchants of Sheba and Raamah, they were your merchants: they traded in your fairs with the best of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold. ²³ Haran, and Canneh, and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad, were your merchants.

³ And their nobles have sent their little ones for water: they came to the cisterns, and found no water; they returned with their vessels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads. ⁴ Because the ground is parched, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.

¹³ O LORD, the hope of Israel, all that forsake you shall be ashamed, and they that depart from me shall be written in the earth, because they have forsaken the LORD, the fountain of living waters.

⁵ And hope makes not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who is given unto us.

³³ As it is written, Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense: and whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed.

¹¹ Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him. ¹² And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they tore every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven. ¹³ So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spoke a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

¹⁵ My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook, and as the stream of brooks that pass away;

⁴ But you are forgers of lies, you are all physicians of no value.

⁹ Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: if laid on the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.

⁷ All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursues them with words, yet they are nothing to him.

²² Turn away from man, whose breath is in his nostrils: for of what account is he?

⁵ Thus says the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusts in man, and makes flesh his arm, and whose heart departs from the LORD. ⁶ For he shall be like the shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes; but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land which is not inhabited.

⁹ We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed: forsake her, and let us go everyone into his own country: for her judgment reaches unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.

³¹ Then said Jesus unto them, All you shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.

⁵⁶ But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him, and fled.

¹⁶ At my first defense no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge.

⁹ And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived in luxury with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, ¹⁰ Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is your judgment come.

¹⁷ For in one hour such great riches is come to nothing. And every shipmaster, and all seafarers, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, ¹⁸ And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!

³ Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose donkey have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind my eyes with? and I will restore it to you.

¹¹ Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they consoled him, and comforted him over all the trouble that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and everyone a ring of gold.

³³ I have coveted no man's silver, or gold, or apparel.

⁴⁸ After he is sold he may be redeemed again; one of his brethren may redeem him:

⁸ And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, who were sold unto the nations; and will you even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.

²⁰ In famine he shall redeem you from death: and in war from the power of the sword.

⁷ None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him: ⁸ (For the redemption of their soul is precious, and it ceases forever:)

¹⁵ But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah.

² Let the redeemed of the LORD say so, whom he has redeemed from the hand of the enemy;

²¹ And I will deliver you out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem you out of the hand of the terrible.

²⁷ Lo this, we have searched it out, so it is; hear it, and know you it for your good.

² I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; show me why you contend with me.

¹¹ Behold, I waited for your words; I gave ear to your reasons, while you searched out what to say.

¹⁵ They were amazed, they answered no more: they left off speaking. ¹⁶ When I had waited, (for they spoke not, but stood still, and answered no more;)

¹ Therefore, Job, I pray you, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.

³¹ Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me: hold your peace, and I will speak. ³² If you have any thing to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify you. ³³ If not, hearken unto me: hold your peace, and I shall teach you wisdom.

³² That which I see not you teach me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.

¹² Who can understand his errors? cleanse me from secret faults.

⁸ I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go: I will guide you with my eye.

¹ [To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.] I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked are before me. ² I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.

⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

¹² As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

¹⁹ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger:

² For in many things we all offend. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

⁴ Your words have upheld him that was falling, and you have strengthened the feeble knees.

⁵ O that you would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.

³ Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldens you that you answer? ⁴ I also could speak as you do: if your soul were in my soul’s place, I could heap up words against you, and shake my head at you. ⁵ But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips would relieve your grief.

³⁴ How then do you comfort me in vain, seeing in your answers there remains falsehood?

²⁵ And if it be not so now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech worth nothing?

³ Also against his three friends was his wrath aroused, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.

¹⁸ There is one that speaks like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise brings health.

²¹ The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increases learning. ²² Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that has it: but the instruction of fools is folly. ²³ The heart of the wise teaches his mouth, and adds learning to his lips. ²⁴ Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

²¹ Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

¹¹ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.

¹⁰ The preacher sought to find acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth. ¹¹ The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails firmly fixed by the masters of assemblies, which are given by one shepherd.

¹⁰ But he said unto her, You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

³ Let the day perish on which I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a male child conceived. ⁴ Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it. ⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it. ⁶ As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not rejoice among the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months. ⁷ Lo, let that night be solitary, let no joyful voice come into it. ⁸ Let them curse it that curse the day, who are ready to arouse leviathan. ⁹ Let the stars of its twilight be dark; let it look for light, but have none; neither let it see the dawning of the day: ¹⁰ Because it shut not up the doors of my mother’s womb, nor hid sorrow from my eyes. ¹¹ Why died I not from the womb? why did I not expire when I came out of the womb? ¹² Why did the knees receive me? or why the breasts that I should nurse? ¹³ For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then would I have been at rest, ¹⁴ With kings and counselors of the earth, who built desolate places for themselves; ¹⁵ Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver: ¹⁶ Or as a hidden untimely birth, I had not been; as infants who never saw light. ¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary are at rest. ¹⁸ There the prisoners rest together; they hear not the voice of the oppressor. ¹⁹ The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master. ²⁰ Therefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; ²¹ Who long for death, but it comes not; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures; ²² Who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave? ²³ Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God has hedged in? ²⁴ For my sighing comes before I eat, and my groanings are poured out like the waters. ²⁵ For the thing which I greatly feared has come upon me, and that which I was afraid of has come unto me. ²⁶ I was not at ease, neither had I quiet, neither was I at rest; yet trouble came.

³ Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands. ⁴ Your words have upheld him that was falling, and you have strengthened the feeble knees.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison thereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

⁹ Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

² How long will you speak these things? and how long shall the words of your mouth be like a strong wind?

¹ My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

³ For the ear tests words, as the mouth tastes food. ⁴ Let us choose for us justice: let us know among ourselves what is good. ⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous: and God has taken away my justice. ⁶ Should I lie concerning my right? my wound is incurable though I am without transgression. ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up scorn like water? ⁸ Who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men. ⁹ For he has said, It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.

² Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

⁵ Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.

⁸ Will you also annul my judgment? will you condemn me, that you may be righteous?

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered what I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

⁷ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends: for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

¹ Ephraim feeds on wind, and follows after the east wind: he daily increases lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.

³⁷ For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.

¹⁴ That we from now on be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, by which they lie in wait to deceive;

²² You shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. ²³ If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; ²⁴ And my wrath shall grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

⁹ You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

³ They drive away the donkey of the fatherless, they take the widow’s ox for a pledge.

⁹ They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge from the poor.

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.

¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it;

²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw I had help in the gate:

¹⁵ He made a pit, and dug it, and has fallen into the ditch which he made.

⁶ They have prepared a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down: they have dug a pit before me, into the midst of which they are fallen themselves. Selah.

³ Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.

¹⁰ Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: ¹¹ For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with you.

²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have dug a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before you to speak good for them, and to turn away your wrath from them.

²² Let a cry be heard from their houses, when you shall bring a troop suddenly upon them: for they have dug a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.

⁷ In you have they made light of father and mother: in the midst of you have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in you have they wronged the fatherless and the widow.

³ And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a boy for a harlot, and sold a girl for wine, that they might drink.

¹⁰ Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the head of all the streets: and they cast lots for her honorable men, and all her great men were bound in chains.

⁵ And I will come near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the sojourner from his right, and fear not me, says the LORD of hosts.

²⁷ Pure religion and undefiled before God the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

³ And through covetousness shall they with false words exploit you: whose judgment of old now lingers not, and their destruction slumbers not.

³ Should your lies make men hold their peace? and when you mock, shall no man make you ashamed?

⁴ My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.

³ My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.

⁴ For truly my words shall not be false: he that is blameless in knowledge is with you.

¹⁰ But as for you all, do you return, and come now: for I cannot find one wise man among you.

¹⁰ But he knows the way that I take: when he has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.

⁴ My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit. ⁵ God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove my integrity from me. ⁶ My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live.

⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous: and God has taken away my justice.

⁶ Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

¹⁸ Then shall you return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serves God and him that serves him not.

⁶ Can that which is tasteless be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

⁸ Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of your words, saying, ⁹ I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. ¹⁰ Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy, ¹¹ He puts my feet in the stocks, he marks all my paths. ¹² Behold, in this you are not just: I will answer you, for God is greater than man.

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered what I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. ⁴ Hear, I ask you, and I will speak: I will question you, and you declare unto me. ⁵ I have heard of you by the hearing of the ear: but now my eye sees you. ⁶ Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

¹⁴ But solid food belongs to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
