¹ My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul. ² I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; show me why you contend with me. ³ Is it good unto you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and smile upon the counsel of the wicked? ⁴ Have you eyes of flesh? or see you as man sees? ⁵ Are your days as the days of man? are your years as man’s days, ⁶ That you inquire after my iniquity, and search after my sin? ⁷ You know that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of your hand. ⁸ Your hands have made me and fashioned me together totally; yet you do destroy me. ⁹ Remember, I beseech you, that you have made me as the clay; and will you bring me into dust again? ¹⁰ Have you not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese? ¹¹ You have clothed me with skin and flesh, and have knit me together with bones and sinews. ¹² You have granted me life and favor, and your care has preserved my spirit. ¹³ And these things have you hid in your heart: I know that this is with you. ¹⁴ If I sin, then you mark me, and you will not acquit me from my iniquity. ¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe unto me; and if I am righteous, yet can I not lift up my head. I am full of disgrace; therefore see my affliction; ¹⁶ For it increases. You hunt me as a fierce lion: and again you show yourself awesome against me. ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation upon me; changes and war are ever with me. ¹⁸ Why then have you brought me forth out of the womb? Oh that I had died, and no eye had seen me! ¹⁹ I would have been as though I had not been; I would have been carried from the womb to the grave. ²⁰ Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little, ²¹ Before I go where I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death; ²² A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

¹⁵ And if you deal thus with me, kill me, I pray you, out of hand, if I have found favor in your sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.

⁴ But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

²⁰ Therefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul; ²¹ Who long for death, but it comes not; and dig for it more than for hidden treasures; ²² Who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they can find the grave? ²³ Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, and whom God has hedged in?

¹⁵ But he saves the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty. ¹⁶ So the poor has hope, and injustice shuts her mouth.

²⁰ In famine he shall redeem you from death: and in war from the power of the sword.

² Oh that my grief were thoroughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together! ³ For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up. ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison thereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

⁸ Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for! ⁹ Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

²⁶ Do you intend to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?

¹¹ Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁶ I loathe it; I would not live always: let me alone; for my days are vanity.

²¹ Though I were blameless, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.

¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe unto me; and if I am righteous, yet can I not lift up my head. I am full of disgrace; therefore see my affliction; ¹⁶ For it increases. You hunt me as a fierce lion: and again you show yourself awesome against me.

¹³ O that you would hide me in the grave, that you would conceal me, until your wrath is past, that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me!

⁶ Though I speak, my grief is not relieved: and though I forbear, how am I eased? ⁷ But now he has made me weary: you have made desolate all my company. ⁸ And you have filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me bears witness to my face. ⁹ He tears me in his wrath, who hates me: he gnashes upon me with his teeth; my enemy sharpens his eyes upon me. ¹⁰ They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me. ¹¹ God has delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked. ¹² I was at ease, but he has broken me asunder: he has also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark. ¹³ His archers surround me, he slashes my kidneys asunder, and does not spare; he pours out my gall upon the ground. ¹⁴ He breaks me with breach upon breach, he runs upon me like a warrior. ¹⁵ I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and laid my strength in the dust. ¹⁶ My face is foul from weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death;

⁴ And if indeed I have erred, my error remains with myself.

² Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolation. ³ Bear with me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on. ⁴ As for me, is my complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?

³ When I kept silence, my bones grew old through my groaning all the day long. ⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy upon me: my strength is turned into the drought of summer. Selah. ⁵ I acknowledged my sin unto you, and my iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

¹⁵ What shall I say? he has both spoken unto me, and he himself has done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁷ Behold, for my peace I had great bitterness: but you have in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for you have cast all my sins behind your back.

³ Therefore now, O LORD, take, I beseech you, my life from me; for it is better for me to die than to live.

⁸ And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah, so that he fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better for me to die than to live.

⁵ If you would seek unto God early, and make your supplication to the Almighty; ⁶ If you were pure and upright; surely now he would awake for you, and make the habitation of your righteousness prosperous.

²⁹ If I am wicked, why then labor I in vain?

³¹ Surely it is fitting to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more: ³² That which I see not you teach me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.

A Psalm of David.] O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger, neither chasten me in your hot displeasure. ² Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are troubled. ³ My soul is also greatly troubled: but you, O LORD, how long? ⁴ Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for your mercies' sake.

⁷ Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to your mercy remember me for your goodness' sake, O LORD.

¹ [A Psalm of David. ²¹ But take care of me, O GOD the Lord, for your name's sake: because your mercy is good, deliver me.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: ²⁴ And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

² And enter not into judgment with your servant: for in your sight shall no man living be justified.

⁴⁰ Let us search and examine our ways, and turn again to the LORD. ⁴¹ Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens. ⁴² We have transgressed and have rebelled: you have not pardoned.

¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned! ¹⁷ For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim.

¹ There is therefore now no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

³¹ For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. ³² But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

²⁰ Behold, God will not cast away a blameless man, neither will he help the evil doers:

²² This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroys the blameless and the wicked.

²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covers the faces of its judges; if not he, who then is it?

¹⁵ You shall call, and I will answer you: you will have a desire to the work of your hands.

¹⁶ Lo, their prosperity is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

¹⁸ Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous: and God has taken away my justice. ⁶ Should I lie concerning my right? my wound is incurable though I am without transgression. ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up scorn like water?

¹⁸ Is it fit to say to a king, You are wicked? and to princes, You are ungodly? ¹⁹ How much less to him that regards not the persons of princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.

⁷ He withdraws not his eyes from the righteous: but with kings they are on the throne; yea, he does establish them forever, and they are exalted. ⁸ And if they are bound in fetters, and are held in cords of affliction; ⁹ Then he shows them their work, and their transgressions, that they have exceeded.

¹⁷ But you have fulfilled the judgment of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold on you. ¹⁸ Because there is wrath, beware lest he take you away with one blow: then a great ransom cannot deliver you.

² Shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproves God, let him answer it.

⁸ Will you also annul my judgment? will you condemn me, that you may be righteous?

³³ For the LORD hears the poor, and despises not his prisoners.

⁸ The LORD will perfect that which concerns me: your mercy, O LORD, endures forever: forsake not the works of your own hands.

⁸ But now, O LORD, you are our father; we are the clay, and you our potter; and we all are the work of your hand.

¹ Righteous are you, O LORD, when I plead with you: yet let me talk with you of your judgments: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? why are all they happy that deal very treacherously? ² You have planted them, yea, they have taken root: they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit: you are near in their mouth, and far from their heart. ³ But you, O LORD, know me: you have seen me, and tested my heart toward you: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.

² He has led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light. ³ Surely against me has he turned; he turns his hand against me all the day. ⁴ My flesh and my skin has he made old: he has broken my bones. ⁵ He has besieged me, and surrounded me with gall and travail. ⁶ He has set me in dark places, like they that are long dead. ⁷ He has hedged me in, that I cannot get out: he has made my chain heavy. ⁸ Also when I cry and shout, he shuts out my prayer. ⁹ He has enclosed my ways with hewn stone, he has made my paths crooked. ¹⁰ He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places. ¹¹ He has turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he has made me desolate. ¹² He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow. ¹³ He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my heart. ¹⁴ I was a derision to all my people; and their song all the day. ¹⁵ He has filled me with bitterness, he has made me drunk with wormwood. ¹⁶ He has also broken my teeth with gravel stones, he has covered me with ashes. ¹⁷ And you have removed my soul far off from peace: I forgot prosperity. ¹⁸ And I said, My strength and my hope has perished from the LORD:

¹⁹ Therefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

⁷ But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in trial.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, You are they who justify yourselves before men; but God knows your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

¹⁴ His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;

²⁶ Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.

² Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God. ³ You turn man to destruction; and say, Return, you children of men. ⁴ For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

¹² But you, O LORD, shall endure forever; and your remembrance unto all generations.

²⁴ I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: your years are throughout all generations. ²⁵ Of old have you laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of your hands. ²⁶ They shall perish, but you shall endure: yea, all of them shall grow old like a garment; as a vesture shall you change them, and they shall be changed: ²⁷ But you are the same, and your years shall have no end.

¹² And as a mantle shall you fold them up, and they shall be changed: but you are the same, and your years shall not fail.

⁸ But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.

¹⁴ If I sin, then you mark me, and you will not acquit me from my iniquity. ¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe unto me; and if I am righteous, yet can I not lift up my head. I am full of disgrace; therefore see my affliction; ¹⁶ For it increases. You hunt me as a fierce lion: and again you show yourself awesome against me. ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation upon me; changes and war are ever with me.

¹⁶ For now you number my steps: do not watch over my sin.

¹⁵ Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till you find none.

²¹ Shall not God search this out? for he knows the secrets of the heart.

³⁴ Also on your skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but plainly upon all these things.

¹² And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and punish the men that are settled in their complacency: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.

²⁴ But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, ²⁵ And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

³⁹ See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god besides me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.

¹⁰ But he knows the way that I take: when he has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.

¹³ But he is of one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desires, even that he does. ¹⁴ For he performs the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.

⁶ Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity.

¹⁴ What then shall I do when God rises up? and when he comes, what shall I answer him?

³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book.

⁷ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends: for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

⁶ For the LORD knows the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

³ O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands;

⁸ The LORD shall judge the people: judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness, and according to my integrity that is in me. ⁹ Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God tests the minds and hearts.

³ You have proved my heart; you have visited me in the night; you have tested me, and shall find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

¹ [A Psalm of David.] Judge me, O LORD; for I have walked in my integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide. ² Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my heart and my mind. ³ For your lovingkindness is before my eyes: and I have walked in your truth. ⁴ I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with hypocrites. ⁵ I have hated the congregation of evildoers; and will not sit with the wicked.

²² Now consider this, you that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

²¹ Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate you? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against you? ²² I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them my enemies.

¹⁵ Now if you are ready that at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, you fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if you worship not, you shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?

¹⁰ And now will I uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers, and none shall deliver her out of my hand.

²⁸ And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. ²⁹ My Father, who gave them to me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. ³⁰ I and my Father are one.

¹⁷ He said unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, do you love me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Do you love me? And he said unto him, Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you. Jesus said unto him, Feed my sheep.

¹² For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

¹⁰ You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and just and unblamable was our behavior among you that believe:

⁶ And the LORD was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. ⁷ And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for I am sorry that I have made them.

⁷³ [Yod] Your hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn your commandments.

⁷ Even everyone that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.

³ Then I went down to the potter’s house, and, behold, he worked a work on the wheels. ⁴ And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. ⁵ Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ⁶ O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? says the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel. ⁷ At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it; ⁸ If that nation, against whom I have spoken, turn from their evil, I will change from the evil that I thought to do unto them. ⁹ And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it; ¹⁰ If it does evil in my sight, that it obeys not my voice, then I will change from the good, with which I said I would benefit them.

⁷ And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

¹⁹ In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread, till you return unto the ground; for out of it were you taken: for dust you are, and unto dust shall you return.

⁷ O remember that my life is a breath: my eye shall no more see good.

¹⁴ I have said to corruption, You are my father: to the worm, You are my mother, and my sister.

¹⁵ My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue clings to my jaws; and you have brought me to the dust of death.

⁶ Remember, O LORD, your tender mercies and your lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old. ⁷ Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to your mercy remember me for your goodness' sake, O LORD.

¹⁸ Look upon my affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins.

⁴⁷ Remember how short my time is: why have you made all men in vain?

³ You turn man to destruction; and say, Return, you children of men.

⁴ Remember me, O LORD, with the favor that you bear unto your people: O visit me with your salvation;

⁷ Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

⁹ Woe unto him that strives with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashions it, What do you make? or of your work, He has no hands?

⁶ O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? says the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.

²¹ Has not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor?

¹⁴ I will praise you; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are your works; and that my soul knows right well. ¹⁵ My frame was not hid from you, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. ¹⁶ Your eyes did see my substance, being yet unformed; and in your book they were all written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.

¹⁷ He moves his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his thighs are knit together. ¹⁸ His bones are as strong pieces of bronze; his bones are like bars of iron.

⁴ Again he said unto me, Prophesy to these bones, and say unto them, O you dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. ⁵ Thus says the Lord GOD unto these bones; Behold, I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live: ⁶ And I will lay sinews upon you, and will bring up flesh upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the LORD. ⁷ So I prophesied as I was commanded: and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold a shaking, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. ⁸ And when I beheld, lo, the sinews and the flesh came up upon them, and the skin covered them over: but there was no breath in them.

² For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: ³ If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.

¹⁶ From whom the whole body being fitly joined together and knit together by that which every joint supplies, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, makes increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

¹⁹ Behold now, your servant has found grace in your sight, and you have magnified your mercy, which you have showed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil overtake me, and I die:

⁴ The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty has given me life.

²⁵ Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body than clothing?

²⁵ Neither is worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he gives to all life, and breath, and all things;

²⁸ For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

⁹ On the left hand, where he does work, but I cannot behold him: he hides himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:

¹³ But he is of one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desires, even that he does.

⁶ Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is heavy upon him. ⁷ For he knows not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?

⁷ I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create calamity: I the LORD do all these things.

¹⁵ Verily you are a God that hides yourself, O God of Israel, the Savior.

⁹ Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, ¹⁰ Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure: ¹¹ Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executes my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

³⁷ Who is he that says, and it comes to pass, when the Lord commands it not?

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

¹¹ According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord:

⁷ Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

¹⁸ The LORD is longsuffering, and of great mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.

²¹ And why do you not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and you shall seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

²⁸ I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that you will not hold me innocent.

²⁶ For you write bitter things against me, and make me possess the iniquities of my youth. ²⁷ You put my feet also in the stocks, and watch closely all my paths; you set a bound to the soles of my feet.

³ If you, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.] O LORD, you have searched me, and known me.

⁷ And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;

¹² Behold, he takes away, who can hinder him? who will say unto him, What do you?

¹⁵ For, though I were righteous, yet could I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.

²⁰ If I justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am blameless, it shall also prove me perverse. ²¹ Though I were blameless, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.

⁷ You know that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of your hand.

⁶ Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling takes hold on my flesh.

¹⁵ Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.

⁷ Let my enemy be as the wicked, and he that rises up against me as the unrighteous.

¹⁷ The wicked shall be turned into sheol, and all the nations that forget God.

¹⁵³ [Resh] Consider my affliction, and deliver me: for I do not forget your law.

¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be done to him.

⁵ Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

⁵ You meet him that rejoices and works righteousness, those that remember you in your ways: behold, you are angry; for we have sinned: in those ways is continuance, and we shall be saved. ⁶ But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

²⁰ Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress: my soul is troubled; my heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaves, at home there is as death.

¹ Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach. ² Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens. ³ We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows. ⁴ We have drunk our water at a price; our wood is sold unto us. ⁵ Our necks are under persecution: we labor, and have no rest. ⁶ We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread. ⁷ Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities. ⁸ Servants have ruled over us: there is none that does deliver us out of their hand. ⁹ We got our bread at the peril of our lives because of the sword in the wilderness. ¹⁰ Our skin was black like an oven because of the terrible famine. ¹¹ They ravished the women in Zion, and the maidens in the cities of Judah. ¹² Princes were hung up by their hands: the faces of elders were not honored. ¹³ They took the young men to grind, and the children stagger under loads of wood. ¹⁴ The elders have ceased from the gate, the young men from their music. ¹⁵ The joy of our heart has ceased; our dance has turned into mourning. ¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head: woe unto us, that we have sinned! ¹⁷ For this our heart is faint; for these things our eyes are dim. ¹⁸ Because of the mountain of Zion, which is desolate, the foxes walk upon it. ¹⁹ You, O LORD, remain forever; your throne from generation to generation. ²⁰ Why do you forget us forever, and forsake us for so long a time? ²¹ Turn us back to you, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old. ²² But you have utterly rejected us; you are very angry against us.

¹⁸ Then shall you return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serves God and him that serves him not.

¹⁰ So likewise you, when you shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say, We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

⁸ But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, ⁹ Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that does evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek;

²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited with the fate of all men; then the LORD has not sent me. ³⁰ But if the LORD makes a new thing, and the earth opens its mouth, and swallows them up, with all that belongs unto them, and they go down alive into the pit; then you shall understand that these men have provoked the LORD.

⁵⁹ Then the LORD will make your plagues abundant, and the plagues of your descendants, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and severe sicknesses, of long continuance.

⁹ Who does great things and unsearchable; marvelous things without number:

¹³ I considered till morning, that, as a lion, so will he break all my bones: from day even to night will you make an end of me.

¹⁰ He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.

⁷ Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe them: ⁸ I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her cubs, and will tear the fat of their heart, and there will I devour them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear them.

⁸ The lion has roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD has spoken, who can but prophesy?

²¹ I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty: why then call you me Naomi, seeing the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?

⁸ And you have filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me bears witness to my face.

⁶ Know now that God has overthrown me, and has compassed me with his net. ⁷ Behold, I cry out concerning wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no justice. ⁸ He has fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he has set darkness in my paths. ⁹ He has stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head. ¹⁰ He has destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and my hope has he removed like a tree. ¹¹ He has also kindled his wrath against me, and he counts me unto him as one of his enemies.

¹⁹ God shall hear, and afflict them, even he that abides of old. Selah. Because they do not change, therefore they fear not God.

¹¹ Moab has been at ease from his youth, and he has settled on his dregs, and has not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither has he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed.

¹⁰ Because it shut not up the doors of my mother’s womb, nor hid sorrow from my eyes. ¹¹ Why died I not from the womb? why did I not expire when I came out of the womb?

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as one dying.

¹⁰ But man dies, and wastes away: yea, man expires, and where is he?

¹⁰ Woe is me, my mother, that you have borne me a man of strife and a man of contention to the whole earth! I have neither lent for interest, nor men have lent to me for interest; yet everyone of them does curse me.

¹⁴ Cursed be the day on which I was born: let not the day on which my mother bore me be blessed. ¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A male child is born unto you; making him very glad. ¹⁶ And let that man be as the cities which the LORD overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear the cry in the morning, and the shouting at noontide; ¹⁷ Because he slew me not from the womb; or that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb to be always great with me. ¹⁸ Why came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

²⁴ The Son of man goes as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.

⁸ As a snail who melts, let every one of them pass away: like the untimely birth of a woman, that they may not see the sun.

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope. ⁷ O remember that my life is a breath: my eye shall no more see good.

¹⁶ I loathe it; I would not live always: let me alone; for my days are vanity. ¹⁷ What is man, that you should magnify him? and that you should set your heart upon him? ¹⁸ And that you should visit him every morning, and test him every moment? ¹⁹ How long will you not look away from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle? ²⁰ I have sinned; what shall I do unto you, O you preserver of men? why have you set me as a mark against you, so that I am a burden to myself? ²¹ And why do you not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and you shall seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

⁹ (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow:)

²⁵ Now my days are swifter than a runner: they flee away, they see no good. ²⁶ They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hastens to the prey.

²¹ Withdraw your hand far from me: and let not your dread make me afraid.

¹ Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

⁵ Behold, you have made my days as a handbreadth; and my age is as nothing before you: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

¹³ O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go away, and be no more.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourishes. ¹⁶ For the wind passes over it, and it is gone; and the place there shall know it no more.

²³ But now he is dead, why should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

¹⁴ For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither does God respect any person: yet does he devise means, that his banished one be not expelled from him.

⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death stain it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.

¹³ For now should I have lain still and been quiet, I should have slept: then would I have been at rest,

⁸ The eye of him that has seen me shall see me no more: your eyes are upon me, and I am not. ⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away: so he that goes down to the grave shall come up no more. ¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.

¹⁰ But man dies, and wastes away: yea, man expires, and where is he? ¹¹ As the waters fail from the sea, and the river decays and dries up: ¹² So man lies down, and rises not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep. ¹³ O that you would hide me in the grave, that you would conceal me, until your wrath is past, that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me! ¹⁴ If a man dies, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change comes.

²² When a few years have come, then I shall go the way where I shall not return.

⁴ Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.

⁶ You have laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deep.

¹¹ Shall your lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or your faithfulness in destruction? ¹² Shall your wonders be known in the dark? and your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

¹¹ I said, I shall not see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living: I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.

⁶ Neither said they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?

²² There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

¹⁷ Have the gates of death been revealed unto you? or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death?

¹⁹ Though you have severely broken us in the place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death.

¹² Shall your wonders be known in the dark? and your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God, before he causes darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while you look for light, he turns it into the shadow of death, and makes it gross darkness.

²⁶ And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they who would pass from here to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from there.
