¹ Be not thou envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them.

¹⁰ And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou goest unto Zoar. ¹¹ So Lot chose him all the plain of the Jordan; and Lot journeyed east; and they separated themselves the one from the other. ¹² Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the Plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom. ¹³ Now the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners against the LORD exceedingly.

¹ And the two angels came to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom; and Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them; and he fell down on his face to the earth; ² and he said: 'Behold now, my lords, turn aside, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your way.' And they said: 'Nay; but we will abide in the broad place all night.' ³ And he urged them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. ⁴ But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both young and old, all the people from every quarter. ⁵ And they called unto Lot, and said unto him: 'Where are the men that came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.' ⁶ And Lot went out unto them to the door, and shut the door after him. ⁷ And he said: 'I pray you, my brethren, do not so wickedly. ⁸ Behold now, I have two daughters that have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes; only unto these men do nothing; forasmuch as they are come under the shadow of my roof.' ⁹ And they said: 'Stand back.' And they said: 'This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs play the judge; now will we deal worse with thee, than with them.' And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and drew near to break the door. ¹⁰ But the men put forth their hand, and brought Lot into the house to them, and the door they shut. ¹¹ And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great; so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

⁹ Gather not my soul with sinners, nor my life with men of blood;

¹ A Psalm of David. Fret not thyself because of evil-doers, neither be thou envious against them that work unrighteousness.

⁷ Resign thyself unto the LORD, and wait patiently for Him; fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

³ For I was envious at the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

¹¹ If they say: 'Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk for the innocent without cause; ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as the grave, and whole, as those that go down into the pit; ¹³ We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil; ¹⁴ Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse' - ¹⁵ My son, walk not thou in the way with them, restrain thy foot from their path;

³¹ Envy thou not the man of violence, and choose none of his ways.

²⁰ He that walketh with wise men shall be wise; but the companion of fools shall smart for it.

¹⁷ Let not thy heart envy sinners, but be in the fear of the LORD all the day;

¹⁹ Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious at the wicked;

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, ²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, parties, ²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like, of which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

⁵ Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit that dwelleth in us long unto envying? ⁶ But he giveth more grace. Wherefore the scripture saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.
