⁵ And the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. ⁶ And it repented the LORD that He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart.

¹ Then there arose a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews. ² For there were that said: 'We, our sons and our daughters, are many; let us get for them corn, that we may eat and live.' ³ Some also there were that said: 'We are mortgaging our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses; let us get corn, because of the dearth.' ⁴ There were also that said: 'We have borrowed money for the king's tribute upon our fields and our vineyards. ⁵ Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage already; neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards.'

¹³ Also I shook out my lap, and said: 'So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise; even thus be he shaken out, and emptied.' And all the congregation said: 'Amen', and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

²⁶ The thoughts of wickedness are an abomination to the LORD; but words of pleasantness are pure.

¹ The preparations of the heart are man's, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD. ² All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits.

³⁵ (4:32) And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and He doeth according to His will in the host of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay His hand, or say unto Him: What doest Thou?

¹⁰ Many shall purify themselves, and make themselves white, and be refined; but the wicked shall do wickedly; and none of the wicked shall understand; but they that are wise shall understand.

³ And let us know, eagerly strive to know the LORD, His going forth is sure as the morning; and He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter rain that watereth the earth.'

⁶ For I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt-offerings.

⁹ (14:10) Whoso is wise, let him understand these things, whoso is prudent, let him know them. For the ways of the LORD are right, and the just do walk in them; but transgressors do stumble therein.

⁹ Hear this, I pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and rulers of the house of Israel, that abhor justice, and pervert all equity; ¹⁰ That build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity. ¹¹ The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money; yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say: 'Is not the LORD in the midst of us? No evil shall come upon us'? ¹² Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.

⁶ 'Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before Him with burnt-offerings, with calves of a year old? ⁷ Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?' ⁸ It hath been told thee, O man, what is good, and what the LORD doth require of thee: only to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.

⁹ Woe to him that gaineth evil gains for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil! ¹⁰ Thou hast devised shame to thy house, by cutting off many peoples, and hast forfeited thy life. ¹¹ For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it. ¹² Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and establisheth a city by iniquity!

³ Then said he unto me: 'This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the whole land; for every one that stealeth shall be swept away on the one side like it; and every one that sweareth shall be swept away on the other side like it. ⁴ I cause it to go forth, saith the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that sweareth falsely by My name; and it shall abide in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.'

⁹ 'Thus hath the LORD of hosts spoken, saying: Execute true judgment, and show mercy and compassion every man to his brother; ¹⁰ and oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you devise evil against his brother in your heart. ¹¹ But they refused to attend, and turned a stubborn shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they might not hear. ¹² Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by His spirit by the hand of the former prophets; therefore came there great wrath from the LORD of hosts. ¹³ And it came to pass that, as He called, and they would not hear; so they shall call, and I will not hear, said the LORD of hosts;

¹⁶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the Wise-men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the male children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had exactly learned of the Wise-men.

³³ Either make the tree good, and its fruit good, or make the tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt; for the tree is known by its fruit.

³⁰ And he would not; but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay that which was due. ³¹ And when his fellow-servants saw what was done, they were exceeding sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. ³² Then his lord called him unto him, and saith to him, Thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou besoughtest me; ³³ shouldest not thou also have had mercy on thy fellow-servant, even as I had mercy on thee? ³⁴ { And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. ³⁵ So shall also my heavenly Father do unto you, if ye forgive not every one his brother their trespasses from your hearts.

⁴¹ Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels; ⁴² for I was hungry, and ye did not give me to eat, I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink, ⁴³ I was a stranger, and ye took me not in, naked, and ye clothed me not, sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not. ⁴⁴ Then shall they also answer, saying, Lord, when saw we thee hungry, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? ⁴⁵ Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not unto one of these least, ye did it not unto me. ⁴⁶ And these shall go away into eternal punishment; but the righteous into eternal life.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, evil thoughts proceed, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² thefts, covetings, wickednesses, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, railing, pride, foolishness;

³³ and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as himself, is much more than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices.

³⁰ Give to every one that asketh thee, and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. ³¹ And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. ³² And if ye love them that love you, what thank have ye? for even sinners love those that love them. ³³ And if ye do good to them that do good to you, what thank have ye? for even sinners do the same. ³⁴ And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? even sinners lend to sinners, to receive again as much. ³⁵ But love your enemies, and do them good, and lend, never despairing, and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil. ³⁶ Be ye merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

⁴⁵ The good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil; for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

²² For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:

⁹ as it is written, He hath scattered abroad, he hath given to the poor, His righteousness abideth for ever. ¹⁰ And he that supplieth seed to the sower and bread for food, may he supply and multiply your seed for sowing, and increase the fruits of your righteousness: ¹¹ ye being enriched in everything unto all liberality, which worketh through us thanksgiving to God. ¹² For the ministration of this service not only filleth up the measure of the wants of the saints, but aboundeth also through many thanksgivings unto God, ¹³ seeing that through the proving of you by this ministration they glorify God for the obedience of your confession unto the gospel of Christ, and for the liberality of your contribution unto them and unto all, ¹⁴ while they themselves also, with supplication on your behalf, long after you by reason of the exceeding grace of God in you.

⁴ traitors, headstrong, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

⁷ I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith: ⁸ henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give to me at that day, and not to me only, but also to all them that have loved his appearing.

¹¹ whose mouths must be stopped, men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

¹⁵ To the pure all things are pure; but to them that are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

⁸ Faithful is the saying, and concerning these things I desire that thou affirm confidently, to the end that they who have believed God may be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men:

¹ Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things that were heard, lest haply we drift away from them. ² For if the word spoken through angels proved stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward, ³ how shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation? which having at the first been spoken through the Lord, was confirmed unto us by them that heard,

⁴ For as touching those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, ⁵ and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come, ⁶ and then fell away, it is impossible to renew them again unto repentance, seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

²⁶ For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more a sacrifice for sins, ²⁷ but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which shall devour the adversaries. ²⁸ A man that hath set at nought Moses law dieth without compassion on the word of two or three witnesses: ²⁹ of how much sorer punishment, think ye, shall he be judged worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?

³⁸ But the righteous one shall live by faith; And if he shrink back, my soul hath no pleasure in him.

¹⁴ Follow after peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no man shall see the Lord:

²² But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deluding your own selves.

Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, the world of iniquity. Thus is the tongue set among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind. ⁸ But the tongue can no man tame, it is an unruly evil, it is full of deadly poison. ⁹ Therewith bless we the God and Father, and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God: ¹⁰ out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. ¹¹ Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet water and bitter? ¹² Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? So can no fountain both yield salt water and sweet. ¹³ Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom.

¹ Whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your pleasures that war in your members? ² Ye lust, and have not; ye kill, and covet, and cannot obtain; ye fight and war, ye have not, because ye ask not. ³ Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend it in your pleasures. ⁴ Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God. ⁵ Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit that dwelleth in us long unto envying?

⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out; and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. ⁵ Ye have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure, ye have nourished your hearts as in a day of slaughter. ⁶ Ye have condemned, ye have killed the righteous one, he doth not resist you.

⁷ that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold that perisheth though it is proved by fire, may be found unto praise and honor and unto glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ:

²² Seeing ye have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, love one another from a pure heart fervently: ²³ having been begotten again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

⁸ and, A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense, for they stumble at the word, being disobedient; whereunto also they were appointed.

¹⁸ Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit,

⁵ Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another. Gird yourselves with humility, for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.

³ And in covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you; whose sentence now from of old lingereth not, and their destruction shall not slumber. ⁴ For if God spared not angels when they sinned, but cast them down to hell, and committed them to pits of darkness, being reserved unto judgment, ⁵ and spared not the ancient world, but preserved Noah with seven others, a preacher of righteousness, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly, ⁶ and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, having made them an example unto those that should live impiously, ⁷ and delivered righteous Lot, sore distressed by the lascivious life of the wicked ⁸ (for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their lawless deeds): ⁹ the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment unto the day of judgment,

²¹ For it were better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after knowing it, to turn back from the holy commandment delivered unto them. ²² But it has happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog turning to his own vomit again, and the sow that had washed to wallowing in the mire.

⁶ by which means the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: ⁷ but the heavens that now are, and the earth, by his word have been stored up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.
