³ And the tempter came and said unto him, If thou art the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.

¹ Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman: 'Yea, hath God said: Ye shall not eat of any tree of the garden?' ² And the woman said unto the serpent: 'Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; ³ but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said: Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.' ⁴ And the serpent said unto the woman: 'Ye shall not surely die; ⁵ for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.'

²⁹ And Jacob sod pottage; and Esau came in from the field, and he was faint. ³⁰ And Esau said to Jacob: 'Let me swallow, I pray thee, some of this red, red pottage; for I am faint.' Therefore was his name called Edom. ³¹ And Jacob said: 'Sell me first thy birthright.' ³² And Esau said: 'Behold, I am at the point to die; and what profit shall the birthright do to me?' ³³ And Jacob said: 'Swear to me first'; and he swore unto him; and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. ³⁴ And Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentils; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way. So Esau despised his birthright.

³ and the children of Israel said unto them: 'Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh-pots, when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.'

⁴ And the mixed multitude that was among them fell a lusting; and the children of Israel also wept on their part, and said: 'Would that we were given flesh to eat! ⁵ We remember the fish, which we were wont to eat in Egypt for nought; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic; ⁶ but now our soul is dried away; there is nothing at all; we have nought save this manna to look to.' -

⁹ Then Satan answered the LORD, and said: 'Doth Job fear God for nought? ¹⁰ Hast not Thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath, on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions are increased in the land. ¹¹ But put forth Thy hand now, and touch all that he hath, surely he will blaspheme Thee to Thy face.' ¹² And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thy hand.' So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

⁴ And Satan answered the LORD, and said: 'Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life. ⁵ But put forth Thy hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, surely he will blaspheme Thee to Thy face.' ⁶ And the LORD said unto Satan: 'Behold, he is in thy hand; only spare his life.' ⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot even unto his crown.

¹⁷ Yet went they on still to sin against Him, to rebel against the Most High in the desert. ¹⁸ And they tried God in their heart by asking food for their craving. ¹⁹ Yea, they spoke against God; they said: 'Can God prepare a table in the wilderness? ²⁰ Behold, He smote the rock, that waters gushed out, and streams overflowed; can He give bread also? or will He provide flesh for His people?'

¹⁷ and lo, a voice out of the heavens, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

³³ And they that were in the boat came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

³ And the devil said unto him, If thou art the Son of God, command this stone that it become bread.

⁹ And he led him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:

³¹ And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat; ³² but I made supplication for thee, that thy faith fail not, and do thou, when once thou hast turned again, establish thy brethren.

²⁰ And straightway in the synagogues he proclaimed the Christ, that he is the Son of God.

⁵ For this cause I also, when I could no longer forbear, sent that I might know your faith, lest by any means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor should be in vain.

¹⁶ lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one mess of meat sold his birthright.

¹⁰ Fear not the things which thou art about to suffer; behold, indeed, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried, and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee the crown of life.

⁹ And the great dragon was cast down, the old serpent, he that is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world, he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were cast down with him. ¹⁰ And I heard a great voice in heaven, saying, Now is come the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ; for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, who accuseth them before our God day and night. ¹¹ And they overcame him because of the blood of the Lamb, and because of the word of their testimony, and they loved not their life even unto death.
