³⁶ And Gideon said unto God: 'If Thou wilt save Israel by my hand, as Thou hast spoken,

¹ And Moses answered and said: 'But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice; for they will say: The lord hath not appeared unto thee.' ² And the LORD said unto him: 'What is that in thy hand?' And he said: 'A rod.' ³ And He said: 'Cast it on the ground.' And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it. ⁴ And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Put forth thy hand, and take it by the tail - and he put forth his hand, and laid hold of it, and it became a rod in his hand - ⁵ that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee.' ⁶ And the LORD said furthermore unto him: 'Put now thy hand into thy bosom.' And he put his hand into his bosom; and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous, as white as snow. ⁷ And He said: 'Put thy hand back into thy bosom. - And he put his hand back into his bosom; and when he took it out of his bosom, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh. - ⁸ And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign. ⁹ And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe even these two signs, neither hearken unto thy voice, that thou shalt take of the water of the river, and pour it upon the dry land; and the water which thou takest out of the river shall become blood upon the dry land.'

¹⁴ And the LORD turned towards him, and said: 'Go in this thy might, and save Israel from the hand of Midian; have not I sent thee?'

¹⁷ And he said unto him: 'If now I have found favour in thy sight, then show me a sign that it is thou that talkest with me. ¹⁸ Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and lay it before thee.' And he said: 'I will tarry until thou come back.' ¹⁹ And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of meal; the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the terebinth, and presented it. ²⁰ And the angel of God said unto him: 'Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth.' And he did so.

⁹ And Isaiah said: 'This shall be the sign unto thee from the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that He hath spoken: shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees?

¹³ Like as a father hath compassion upon his children, so hath the LORD compassion upon them that fear Him. ¹⁴ For He knoweth our frame; He remembereth that we are dust.

¹ And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and trying him asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
