¹⁴ and I advanced in the Jews' religion beyond many of mine own age among my countrymen, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

¹³ And the Lord said: Forasmuch as this people draw near, and with their mouth and with their lips do honour Me, but have removed their heart far from Me, and their fear of Me is a commandment of men learned by rote;

¹² I will declare thy righteousness; thy works also - they shall not profit thee.

¹⁴ (9:13) But have walked after the stubbornness of their own heart, and after the Baalim, which their fathers taught them.

² And it shall come to pass, when they say unto thee: Whither shall we go forth? then thou shall tell them: Thus saith the LORD: Such as are for death, to death; and such as are for the sword, to the sword; and such as are for the famine, to the famine; and such as are for captivity, to captivity.

² Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. ³ And he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?

⁶ And ye have made void the commandment of God because of your tradition.

³ (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands diligently, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders, ⁴ and when they come from the market-place, except they bathe themselves, they eat not, and many other things there are, which they have received to hold, washings of cups, and pots, and brasen vessels, and beds.) ⁵ Then the Pharisees and the scribes ask him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with defiled hands? ⁶ And answering he said unto them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoreth me with their lips, But their heart is far from me. ⁷ But in vain do they worship me, Teaching as their doctrines the precepts of men. ⁸ Ye leave the commandment of God, and hold fast the tradition of men; the washing of pots and cups, and many other such like things ye do. ⁹ And he said unto them, Full well do ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your tradition. ¹⁰ For Moses said, Honor thy father and thy mother, and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death; ¹¹ but ye say, If a man shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited by me is Corban, that is to say, Given to God, ¹² and ye no longer suffer him to do aught for his father or his mother, ¹³ making void the word of God by your tradition, which ye have delivered; and many such like things ye do.

³ I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city, at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict manner of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as ye all are this day:

⁵ having knowledge of me from the first, if they be willing to testify, that after the straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

⁹ I verily thought with myself that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

⁴ though I myself might have confidence even in the flesh; if any other man thinketh to have confidence in the flesh, I yet more: ⁵ circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews, as touching the law, a Pharisee, ⁶ as touching zeal, persecuting the church, as touching the righteousness which is in the law, found blameless.

⁸ Take heed lest there shall be any one that maketh spoil of you through his philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ:

⁸ whom not having known ye love, on whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice greatly with joy unspeakable and full of glory:
