¹⁷ Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah, and prostrated themselves before the king. Then the king hearkened unto them.

²⁷ For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck; behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death?

⁸ But he forsook the counsel of the old men which they had given him, and took counsel with the young men that were grown up with him, that stood before him. ⁹ And he said unto them: 'What counsel give ye, that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me, saying: Make the yoke that thy father did put upon us lighter?' ¹⁰ And the young men that were grown up with him spoke unto him, saying: 'Thus shalt thou say unto the people that spoke unto thee, saying: Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them: My little finger is thicker than my father's loins.

³ He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab; for his mother was his counsellor to do wickedly. ⁴ And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as did the house of Ahab; for they were his counsellors after the death of his father, to his destruction.

²¹ With her much fair speech she causeth him to yield, with the blandishment of her lips she enticeth him away. ²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox that goeth to the slaughter, or as one in fetters to the correction of the fool; ²³ Till an arrow strike through his liver; as a bird hasteneth to the snare - and knoweth not that it is at the cost of his life.

¹⁹ He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets; therefore meddle not with him that openeth wide his lips.

⁸ As a small stone in a heap of stones, so is he that giveth honour to a fool.

²⁸ A lying tongue hateth those that are crushed by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.

⁵ A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his steps.

¹² If a ruler hearkeneth to falsehood, all his servants are wicked.

³² And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall be corrupt by blandishments; but the people that know their God shall show strength, and prevail.

²⁹ I know that after my departing grievous wolves shall enter in among you, not sparing the flock, ³⁰ and from among your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them.

¹⁵ Yea, I will give diligence that at every time ye may be able after my decease to call these things to remembrance.
